View Full Version : regd: loans for international students
conundrum 05-08-2006, 11:25 AM Hi,
I am an International student new to SDN, actually didnt hear about it until i was called for an interview by NYU.I have been accepted by NYU in the advanced placement program and was wondering about the financial aspect of joining NYU.
I was told by the financial aid office that i need to fill out the SIGNATURE SELECT LOAN FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS. I have showed the form to my cosigner. There is a clause in the form that states that my cosigner needs to have the total loan amount shown as assets and the money can be withdrawn from his account at any time. Because of this my cosigner is hesitant in signing the form. Is there any other way of getting loans to finance my education, if so what is the procedure????. I would really appreciate it some one could shed light on this.
thanks

Even I had the same problem as yours. Try to take citiassist global international loan that offers 40,000 per year without a cosigner. The rest of the COA can be borrowed from citiassist health professional loan that requires a cosigner. However the global international loans interest rate is 9 + 2.
damast 05-10-2006, 03:26 PM hi rubberdam, i ve read ur other post abt the loan, but r u sure its 9+2% because as far as i know its prime + 2%.Correctme if i am wrong

Well atleast thats what I thought it meant. You have many posts regarding financial matters, you should know better. Frankly I'm not sure what it meant.

Wouldn't they withdraw from your cosigner's account only if you have problems paying them back? That's a risk for other loans too, right?

Do you know if international students at other schools, say UCSF or Harvard can apply for the Citiassist global international loans? The reason why I asked is that I searched online and only found information regarding the global international loans on NYU's website but not others. It looks like Citibank and NYU has some kind of deal going on.

Why don't you contact Citibank (https://studentloan.citibank.com/s/slcsite/fr_conta.htm) directly, I'm sure they can help and answer your question :)
damast 05-10-2006, 10:38 PM well,i agree i have quiet a few posts but even my knowledge is like a drop in sea;new things keep coming up everyday.Current prime rate is about 7 %,so citiassist global is 7+2(i am not sure whether its a flat rate or it varies with credit history of the borrower). As u have already been approved,so u can throw some light on what interest u have got(if you dont mind).
Thanks

In the letter they sent it says "the margin (as defined in your promisory note) for the loan that you requested will be prime rate+ 2.0%. The variable rate is the sum of the index (as defined in your promisory note) plus or minus the margin".
rahmed 05-11-2006, 09:56 AM Prime lending rate is 8.0% :( as of yesterday.
Khurram 05-11-2006, 10:12 AM I thought I remember reading on nyu's website that the citiassist loan is prime MINUS 1 ....someone check up on that if they can please...
nyu and citibank do have a deal going on and citibank is the "official" supplier of loans to nyu grad students after fafsa does their part.
