Yes. As long as they are "supervised" by an attending licensed dentist, and have completed all the required CE courses, credits and training.

Used to work in a Dental Hygiene School office as their administrative assistant. :D I dont any more.

On a side note, did you guys know that up till the 1980's (I think even some states still allow this practice today), assistants were allowed to place fillings ? I'm talking amalgam fillings, class II, MOD's and all ...

From what I have been told by dental hygienists (DHs), DHs in British Columbia (Canada), have the right to run individual practices and can administer anesthesia in order to perform simple operative dentistry procedures.

From the British Columbia Dental Hygienists Association :

Registered Dental Hygienists in BC work in a number of settings, including dental offices, dental hygiene practices, residential care facilities, hospitals, community health centres, public health units, schools and educational institutions. In BC, the legislation permits a dental hygienist to own and operate his/her own dental hygiene practice. Dental hygienists may also practice as self-employed contractors if they meet current tax laws and the terms and conditions for self-employment.

There recently was a change in the Manitoba legislation which has enabled dental hygienists to administer local anesthesia. The University of Manitoba has offered continuing education courses in the administration of local anesthesia.

Actually,with expanded care permit a dental hygienist can **work independently**.Must be sponsered by a dentist.This is way simplyfying the law, but it is being practiced.This is one way of reaching the underserved population-bringing them access to dental care. :)

I do know for a fact that dental hygienists CAN administer local anesthesia in Manitoba (they even grant a Diploma in Local Anesthesia for hygienists at the University of Manitoba ) and BC but I don`t know specifically which operative procedures that implies. I have to get better informed to confirm this. I woud imagine that they would employ the L.A mostly for root planning.

I know that there has been a great debate recently occuring in regards to the limits of how many dental acts can be administered by dental hygienists. In Quebec and Ontario, for instance, this has been a "hot topic" . I am sure this has been an issue of discussion in the US as well.
