View Full Version : To The Fashionably Challenged
GMO2003 05-09-2006, 07:42 AM I'm not a fashionista nor am I a fashion victim...I fall somewhere in between...Summer time is coming up and just wondering what the verdict is on the whole shirt tuck issue...is it still in to leave the shirt tucked out? what about the half tuck look? personally I think it looks gay and makes you look like a poseur..anyways, just wondering...
this post reminds me of the hilarious thread I read a couple years ago about the debate on whether or not it's a good idea to wear a scrub top with your khakis...aka the radiology uniform

It depends on the shirt, don't tuck Tshirts (ofcourse) and do tuck button downs, the casual polo can be tucked or untucked depending on which area of the country you live in

That thread was funny as hell!
DW3843 05-09-2006, 11:09 AM the radiology uniform sounds an awful lot like the standard dental student attire that I've seen......except where I come from you need to add in a nice set of Croakies with some frat shades to round out the outfit.
angel80 05-09-2006, 11:30 AM For work, tuck all button shirts in. For casual wear, leave them untucked.
highball 05-09-2006, 12:33 PM Do you guys tuck scrubs? I personally don't because I think you look kinda dumb with them tucked in.
Pir8DeacDoc 05-09-2006, 12:51 PM I do tuck my scrubs. I think it looks sort of sloppy not to tuck them. However, before a longer case I like to untuck so I don't get too hot. The breathability and comfort with them untucked is great.
CANES2006 05-09-2006, 01:46 PM I tuck in my scrubs. I personally think you look like a slob with them tucked out. I'm really picky about those things. ;)

i think that it's an OB rule to tuck scrubs. all of my rotations before ob were untuck scrubs, but from ob on i have always tucked for fear of the wrath OB residents. they told us that nurses untuck and doctors tuck. which in my observation held true for that rotation. but outside of ob, many docs untuck. i will agree it looks much nicer to tuck and as such i have maintained the tuck.

I'm 6'3" and if I bother to tuck my scrubs in, they untuck about 12 seconds later.
Why don't they make tall scrub TOPS?
chicamedica 05-09-2006, 05:41 PM I have one of those unusual body shapes where tucking scrubs actually looks worse than wearing the top untucked. . .too much bulk down there already. . . ;) So I wear em untucked. Luckily nobody at my hospital cares and med students/residents/attendings wear em either way. Actually the scrub tops have pockets down where they'd be tucked under, so it doesn't even seem like the scrubs here were even made to be tucked in.

An OB rule to tuck scrubs in? Never heard about that one. What is this: another myth about OB? ;)
Blade28 05-09-2006, 06:12 PM Us surgery residents always tuck our scrub tops in.

Yeah, because you are afraid of being ripped apart by the charge nurse for possibly contaminating things!
The rule that was drilled into me was if the top is loose, tuck it. If the pants are too bulky, don't tuck. Any other time you can do as you wish. Supposedly because of accidently brushing up against something sterile.
mysophobe 05-09-2006, 08:51 PM I tuck in just about everything: t-shirts, button down shirts, scrubs. Long sleeve t-shirts and stuff, no obviously. I'm a dork I guess.

Why would I be afraid of the charge nurse? If I'm close enough to the field to have my shirt brush something, I'm probably scrubbed into the case, and therefore wearing a sterile gown that would prevent my scrubs from contaminating anything. Either that, or I'm a med student that doesn't understand sterility yet. :D
Plastikos 05-09-2006, 11:17 PM Totally depends. At the hospital i tuck scrubs, all the drs. do and to me it just looks sloppy to not do it, ancillary staff is much less likely too. I also tuck in button down shirts at the hospital of course, they are usually pretty cheap anyways and would look terrible untucked. Scrub tops with jeans/khakis=terrible, mind you radiologists work in the dark so it doesnt matter as much.
For going out, unless of course you are of the mind that nothing matters anymore, you should untuck your shirt, unless its the aforementioned cheap non-fitted/non-tailored shirts. Those look ridiculous untucked. Also, as there seem to be striking differences in regions, go with the standard of your area.
turtle,md 05-10-2006, 01:46 AM I am all about the un-tuck. Scubs in general are "unprofessional," so I might as well feel comfortable when I wear them. I am also a fan of the scrub top/khaki pants (I am EM). Scrub bottoms don't have enough places to store things, so I wear cargo pants, and I am not about to wear a "nice" shirt when there is a good chance of bodily fluid contact. It seems that the scrub top/khaki bottom is the "uniform" of a good number of my EM colleagues.

angel80 05-10-2006, 08:33 AM In IM, when we're on call, we do the scub bottom/cotton T-shirt thing. Scrub bottoms are very comfortable, but the tops are annoying. A nice solid cotton T-shirt in white, gray, etc is much more comfortable.
Koil Gugliemi 05-10-2006, 12:33 PM We prefer the moniker "radiology mullet" for scubs on top/khakis on the bottom. "radiology uniform" just has no zip to it.
Note that the radiology mullet is inverse of the Team-Canada version...ours is party on the top and business on the bottom.
drPLUM 05-10-2006, 01:36 PM There is rarely an occasion where you should tuck anything into jeans. T shirts are a never tuck regardless of pant choice. Tucking the button down depends on the length. The half tuck is a fraternity fad from several years ago, nobody would dare do that now. Polos are definitely dependent on the area of the country and the length of the shirt. Overall the critical factor in any tuck/nontuck decision is the length of the shirt. It looks soooo stupid to sport a long shirt untucked.
"Radiology mullet"!! You're killin' me, Smalls. :)

Agreed, techs usually leave their tops untucked.

:)
I have to disagree on that one...(i'll be the randomg uy that never posts in this section) Check out Kanye West sometime..he's all about the half tuck/half out thing...and by the way how the hell do "you tuck a shirt out" or whatever..isn't that essentially "untucked" or is it just a double negative thing? :p

I could care less about the tops... I wear t-shirts. The bottoms bug me!!! I can't find any that are long enough (I'm 6' - 35" inseam) and look like I'm always wearing capris or high water pants.
surgdia 05-12-2006, 10:40 AM I'm a scrubs tucker. As mentioned before, it tends to look more clean-cut and professional when tucked (and is also more comfortable). Also, untucked tends to make me look pregnant in an unflattering way.

I've found tall/long bottoms (especially for women) - but never tall tops. My wife says if she can find good fabric, she'll make me some.
