Anybody run into a problem withdrawing from an away rotation? Is it frowned upon or does it happen all the time? If a program director accepts you and then you later cancel, is that expected to hurt your chances at getting ranked at that program? It seems like it would happen often enough... Are people applying to "back up" programs for aways or are they just applying to the one they really want to attend? Thanks.

Away rotations arent really all that easy to get, especially at the top institutions. If you schedule and cancel a rotation, especially at one that features a small, specialized residency (Neurosurgery, ENT, etc.) then I'd say you can kiss your chances at being ranked goodbye. I've spoken to some residency directors, and they take away rotations very seriously.
