I sent in my application into them last week and am kind of curious about how it works. All I know about it is what they mentioned in the email that contained the application.

Anyone know about the school? I'll have to find a place to live up there for the couple months of the program. Is there on-campus parking or do I need to find someplace close I can walk or take a bus from?

What else do you know about the area that you can share?

I've been researching the area around the campus for the past month. The RTD system is really wonderful there. I've been inputting several addresses on the RTD's route website from different apt to the HSC and it usually only takes a few minutes of walking to reach the RTD stop. There are also some apts around the campus which are only a few blocks away. I heard that the on-campus parking is crowded, but I think since this is a summer program, the parking shouldn't be that bad. Good luck finding an apartment... I know I do :) I haven't found any yet and I am flying there on May 28th :(

Are you flying there for the summer program or did you get accepted to the pharmacy school? If for the summer program, when did you get accepted and did you get a letter or an email?

Did they offer any more information about the program?

It's not often that "wonderful" and "RTD" are used in the same sentence. I suppose Denver is lucky when compared to other cities, I'll let you explore RTD's inadequacies on your own.

The area around the school is very well connected in the RTD system:
- route 32 connects with downtown and the western suburb of Lakewood.
- route 40 runs up and down Colorado Blvd from the northern suburb of Commerce City to south Denver.
- route 10 runs from Aurora (eastern suburb) through the medical center and to downtown.
- route 6 takes a different route from Aurora, to the medical center, through downtown and all the way up to the northern suburbs (it takes hours to do the whole thing - not for the faint of heart).
- route 56 goes to south Denver (but only on a weekday)
- route DD goes to Boulder only during rush hours and on weekdays (the trip takes 1:15+)

One could conceivably live in the southeastern suburbs and commute to school with public transportation. The new light rail line out to the DTC and beyond opens in November. You'd have to take the route 40 up Colorado Blvd from the station since RTD planned a big hole in the middle of the light rail network (the big hole is called "Denver").

Now I'm getting off topic. Use the bus system since parking in the medical center is rare and expensive. Housing options are ample near campus. I live in an area called Capitol Hill that's about three miles west of school. Congress Park is directly west of campus. The Mayfair area is north and east. Glendale is to the south. Washington Park and Baker are to the southwest. Housing is fairly reasonable for renters. I have a 700 sq ft one bedroom and I pay $550 per month for it. It pays to shop around - there are sharks offering tiny closets for that price. Buyers will pay through the nose. Denver mortgages are relatively steep.

I think you guys will love Denver. It's a big city, but it doesn't feel that big to me unless I have to travel outside of Central. There are some charming things and some repulsive things - just like anywhere. The climate is extraordinary. The people are very friendly for the most part - get used to saying hello to people as you walk down the street in the residential areas. The population is educated, smart and active - lots of interesting characters running around.

I agree with Twester about RTD. Depending on where you live and where you want to go it can either be wonderful or seem like your stuck in a public transportation blackhole. Housing in plentiful both next to campus and the surrounding area. If you want to live right next to campus be prepared to pay a little extra. A decent 1 bdrm should run somewhere in the 500-600 range. As always don't just look at the rent, ask about included utilities (many include some or most) and extra charges like parking spaces. Between online websites like rent.com (www.rent.com), forrent.com (www.forrent.com), and the posting on UCHSC's website you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a place.

Denver itself is pretty affordable for a big city and has plenty of things to see and do. The natural history muesum and zoo are very close by (maybe 5 mins by car). Downtown and Lodo aren't far off either.

Where do you live now Twester?

I got a conditional acceptance from the pharmacy school. I need to finish their Advanced English summer course before I enrolled into the SOP. I'm sorry that I can't give you any other information than that :o .

I've never taken an RTD yet, but the system seems to be okay. I'm planning to find an apartment that's not more than 0.5 miles from the HSC. :p

I'm on Cap Hill, about Corona and 11th. You're right, rents are in the 500-600 range (a lot more if luxury is a concern). But it does pay to shop around. I think rents are a little higher for a decent place outside of central Denver.

There are definatly areas of town that are way more expensive like cherry creek. But Denver rent is still way cheaper than some place like Boulder.

Denver is a big city right? I wonder why the rent is much cheaper?

I honestly couldn't tell you why Denver is cheaper than other big cities. It might have to do with the fact that housing is plentiful in the area. Places like Boulder are much more expensive because of location (right next to the foothills and very pretty) and they have very strong anti-sprawl laws. Boulder itself has expanded relativley little in the past 10 years in size, but more people keep moving in.

I alo got accepted to the summer honors program. Yeah, the letter they sent me was exactly as the info through email. I've tried to do a little research on the web but no luck. I'm flying out from Cali on the 30th to look for a place to stay for the two months also. I am looking for like a one bed with kitchen, frig etc. Will i have any luck for these amenities for about 500 bucks?

I'm sure you can find one for 500 w/o parking. Thats on the lower end of decent 1 bdrm places near the school.

Nevermind, I sent em an email and they said the last notifications were going out today. It's 4:30 already so I guess someone should show up in my inbox very shortly one way or another...

Did they say email or snail mail? I too am anxiously awaiting a response! I sent my application in two weeks ago. Was very disappointed to get home from work and have an empty inbox. Thought for sure today would bring some news.

Their response didn't say which but one of the previous posters to this thread said he got an acceptance already by an email.

If I don't see anything by tomorrow afternoon, I think I'll send another email. I assumed when she said that notifications would go out today that they would send acceptance and denial letters. The waiting part sucks.

At least you've had luck contacting them. I've sent one email and made two phone calls (had to leave messages) and got no response. Can't imagine it would be good news that they would wait so long to give a reply and then do it by snail mail.

I'm very discouraged. Thought this would really be my chance after receiving nothing but rejection letters this year. :(

Well, when you are in summer program doesnt mean that you are in pharm school. So dont be discouraged yet. But it will be an expensive Denver vacation for me bc i had to quit my job which isnt a good idea bc i just bought a new car too. I want to know how many people got accepted in this summer program already. Maybe i can have a role call for this program please.
