I've heard that you have to be an in-state student or show significant ties to Mississippi to get accepted.

I was born in Mississippi, lived there for several years, and the majority of my family (both sets of grandparents, multiple aunts and uncles, and multiple cousins) still lives there. Even though I am not an in-state student, would these ties be strong enough for me to have a chance to be accepted?

According to the information you have provided you do not currently meet the requirements as a legal resident of Mississippi, which is the first requirement for consideration as a medical school applicant. From my understanding, if your state of residence on AMCAS is not MS, then you pretty much are rejected without consideration.

This last year 300 or so residents applied for 110 slots, so this policy makes sense. If you are seriously considering UMC, move to MS for a year to establish residency, and demonstrate that you have current ties to MS and are dedicated to the care of our residents.

They haven't accepted an OOS student in 20 years.

I met with the dean, he said that oos is a definite no.
