OK maybe this is not the best site to psot this but I figured that Id have a better chance here than the PharmD forum. Have any of you done either a residency in Managed Care Pharmacy or the summer intership in Managed Care Pharmacy offered by the AMCP? I am looking into it for next summer and I hear it is quite competative. I d lke to find out how hard it is to get in and what would help boost my chances to make the list (for the summer program that is.. also Id appreciate any info about recidencies in Managed Care Pharmacy. Thanks a ton in advance!

I honestly haven't known the internships to be that competitive, but I guess it may vary w/ the year. All of pharmacy is kind of managed care from the perspective of formulary control and cost effectiveness; however, I guess some of the big markets are the VA, Kaiser, and Walgreens Health Initiative. I guessed you realized that there are many more options on the amcp.org website. Another possible venue may be the Caremark system. So I guess it may depend largely on what is in your area. An internship in the VA is probably the hardest to get in depending on location and the various barriers w/ the federal system so Kaiser and/or Walgreens Health Initiative (although I think WHI is limited geographically to Illinois) may be an easier road to explore. In particular I'd guess that you could increase your chances by becoming active in the local AMCP chapter at your school or by trying to do some volunteering or part time work at the local managed care setting (Kaiser or Caremark) or even the local academic teaching facility (and shadowing their clinical and/or pharmacoeconomics staff) as they too often follow a managed care approach.

I have not done a Managed Care pharm internship, but I have done an association management internship at ASHP and I got to go to the AMCP headquarters in Virginia. Also, got to host all the AMCP students while they were visiting the ASHP headquarters.
As far as competitiveness, it depends....for instance, ASHP selects only1 student per year for their internship, whereas, for AMCP, I remember there being about 5 or 6. One of my good frinds from school got this internship. As far as I can see...you need to have some leadership and participation in your school's pharm organizations, good letters of reference, and they seemed to really stress on the essay/letter of intent. I think they asked you what you think Managed care pharmacy is or why you want to be a part of it. Try to show them that you really know what managed care pharm is.....when I was at the headquarters they kept stressing that most people don't understand what it is.
Hope this helps,
Rachel
