I am just starting my residency and only have the basic and clinical science series from the AAO. What additional books should I purchase that those of you in residency and fellowship think would be helpful? What should the timing of buying these books be (now vs late in first year or next year etc..)? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Practical Ophthalmology (A Manual For Beginning Residents) is a good one to buy now.

Wills Eye Manual is a great resource for on-call issues. Beyond that, you don't HAVE to buy anything else really. I just finished residency and I never read any textbooks other than the basic science series. I did well on OKAPs too. Still, I'm probably more laid-back (lazier) than most ophtho residents - as a rule, I've noticed ophtho people are more relaxed than some other surgical specialties but still can't always get away from their over-achiever roots. Ask people in your program - they will have a better idea what books are bet to fill in gaps in your lectures or test preparations.
