Hi,
If any of the advanced standing students have any questions please post it here. It would help everyone in the long run . ( PM'ing me will only help you :D )
I've been thru this process & Iam almost stepping into the program, so I guess I
might be able to help students who just started off with their applications ...
Iam sure I wont be able to answer many of your questions , but I guess others in a similar position might be able to help us out. This will help all of us ..
[/QUOThanks for the replies on this as well as the question about residencies.Well I am
still waiting for my Part 1 results and I will be applying only next year,I
guess.Anyway,I heard that USC has changed their curriculum to PBL.Is it the same
for international students or do they have a regular curriculum for international
students. Also I would also appreciate if u could tell me why u would choose USC
over BU.I would really appreciate if u could compare the 2 on the following
points:Tuition, quality of education, the school itself and also thepeople who
interviewed u.I would also appreciate if u could share ur experience about the
interviews.TE]
------------------------------------
Hi drmouse,
USC has a PBL curriculum only for the regular batch , but from the next academic year they will be switching on to the PBL curriculum even for the advance standing students.

I haven't entirely decided where I'll join ( thou I placed my deposit at USC),,,so once I do that I'll let you know why I chose it ! USC & BU are both very good schools.. Iam still waiting for other interviews etc so I havent made a final decision.
Tuition for PASS program is almost the same in all the univ.
I cant say abt the quality of education .... Iam guessing it'll be great !
.
Interviews are not a big deal......honest ! It's very cool , laid-back , they just want to get to know you, your attitude & approach etc ...

perplexed,
you are a kind soul helping fellow international students!
why do some schools insist on a gpa? what is a decent one that can assure you an interview?
how do we learn and practice for technical tests in california?
are you on a waiting list anywhere? if so what can be done at that stage to keep the schools interest in you alive?
thanks...and sorry for my exhaustive queries!

Hi,
Jeeeees.... Look what I got myself into ...... :)
;)
Docie,
why do some schools insist on a gpa? what is a decent one that can assure you an interview?
....

GPA is req by all the schools , GPA over 3.0 is good but not a must for an interview.I know of ppl who have got accepted with GPA around 2.7 & 2.6 . I think it helps to explain to them how we are scored back home .... Each school has a different method of scoring, so low or high GPA doesnt really make a lot of sense .....does it ?
The most important score is still the part 1 score..GPA, part 2 are all secondary.
...........

how do we learn and practice for technical tests in california?
...........

You are on your own buddy ! hehehe .
You have to practice on typodonts, try to do all the fixed & operative part ( inlays , onlays , crowns , class 2's etc ),,,its always safe to do that. huh yeah ! Its tough but its worth it as the practical work matters a LOT ! No school is going to help u with that !

are you on a waiting list anywhere? if so what can be done at that stage to keep the schools interest in you alive?
.............
Iam also on the waiting list in one of the schools... Most schools don't even give the ranking for the waiting list ..that's so annoying , isnt it ?
Just keep waiting for the phone to ring all the time ......
There's isnt much we can do actually .. may be just call them up once in a while .
Hope this helps .
Good luck !

Well ! lets see the good points..

-You wont have lack of patients.
-You get to live in NYC.
-They do have PG programs.
-You'll have lots of friends as it'll be a big class.
- Everyone has there own views abt schools , who knows you might end up loving it there.

If you are not too happy abt it you can keep it as your back up ,, wait for other schools & see how that goes. Well I guess you'll have to place a deposit for them to hold your place, yeah !
What are the other interviews u attended so far ?
Docie, you can PM me if you want to get into the details of this.

Hi everyone,

All u guys are really wonderful and of great help because u all share ur experiences on this board. Now I am very much junior to u all.I mean I took my part 1 in dec and didnot do too well.I got only 83 :( .I know it is a pretty low score and I don't think I have chances of getting into any school at all.I know that most people get scores above 88 and so on.Does anyone know of anybody who has ever got into any dental school with such a low score or even has been invited for an interview for that matter. Also I was thinking about retaking Part 1 but am not too sure of what to do.I will have to reatke the whole exam and I did pretty well on Dental Anat and don't want to mess with the score. Also I tried speaking to the NDB and they told me that they report the latest score and also that they know of students who do worse on retakes and then are in a mess. Can anyone please guide me.All of u who are getting in some school, can u please share ur scores with me.Also do u guys think that taking Part 2 will improve my chances of getting into some school or is it that there will be no difference.Please...please help me.I would really appreciate all ur help............

Henna
02-06-2002, 01:45 PM
Hi drmouse,
First of all congrats ! You did good !( & good to hear from u again :) )! You've got very good scores, having said that I would also say that NDB part 1 being a competitive exam with very few seats & too many applicants its hard to get into a good school without high scores.
From my observation , I feel that dec batch generally lack a certain amt of advantage that the july batch has . Dec batch get less choices to choose from when it comes to applying to schools as most schools are closed for addmission for that year even before you get your results, right ?
So you have very few schools at hand right now , I would go ahead & apply anyways but I would also have a contingency plan.
If you decide to give an exam to improve your chances PLEASE retake PART 1, taking part 2 for the first time is not going to help you much, you are much more well versed in NDB 1 now so it to your advantage to take that again . Moreover very very few schools ask for part 2 & the schools who dont have that as an "requirement" will not even consider ur NDB 2 scores .
Yes ! Some students do bad on their next attempt....so ??? That need not be you. I would give myself a couple of weeks & then start with my preparation,,,may be look into the question papers etc .. I think Kaplan helps too, you can also get dental decks etc .. Its all so fresh in your memory right now , it wont be hard to get it all back & to get into the rhythm. It'll be way easier this time !
And yes .. I know ppl who have had 79% - 82 % who have got accepted in good schools ..but its way past their deadline for you to apply.( I also think it was their practical skills that helped them )
Good luck !

groovy
02-06-2002, 01:52 PM
i think you should apply immediately to nyu who considers applicants with 80 and above.
i have heard of lot of people who have got in with those scores there as well as other places.
in the meantime you could retake the test and activate your application file in schools later with recent scores if you are not lucky this time.

Henna

Hi perplexed,docie&others

You guys are really a great help with so much info regarding advanced student admissions.i gave part-1 in dec got 89%,must be ok score its intimidating seeing so many with 90's.Itseems that score is important but not the only thing to get good school(correct me if wrong).i have applied fot UCONN,BU,SUNY,&UPENN after going through your posts i'm rethinking of applying to NYU.what are my chances of getting admission for this fall.

Henna
02-07-2002, 06:35 AM
Congrats merl! Good going !
I would apply to as many schools as possible ( may be not NYU), but that's me. :)

You dont have to apply to all the space based schools thou,as space based schools are extrrrrrrremely picky, & you never actually know when space becomes available, & sometimes they wont have seats to offer.

Iam sure you'll get accepted, just apply within the deadlines.( please dont wait for the dealines as most schools have a rolling addmission , ie first come first basis).

Hi Everyone,
Thanks Perplexed and Docie. It was really reassuring to know that ppl with 79-82 have got in.I know that I have missed deadlines of most schools. But I was in any case planning to apply for 2003.Perplexed,could u please tell me which schools were u talking about.
Mehr,I think u have a great score. And u have a very good chance of getting in.
I haven't decided yet whether I will be retaking Part 1 or not.Actually last year I got married and came here.Since I was new to the place and also newly married,I thought that I will not be prepared in July and so postponed it to Dec.I think that was the biggest mistake.Because even by taking it in Dec I didnot get good scores.
However, ppl have really scared me by telling me of folks who didnot do too well on the retake. On the contrary, they flunked. And that is worse.
Anyway, one of my friends got into Boston. When she went to the interview, the were told that they would consider someone has ok scores on Part 1 but has also taken part 2.However I am planning to speak to the schools and find out.
However, could u guys who have got admission in the schools please share ur scores with me.
Thanks once again for all the help............I really appreciate it.You guys have a nice day.
Perplexed, actually sometime last week I was trying to send u a PM but got disconnected and lost the message. And after that got my result. Will send u again soon.Take care............

drmouse,
Look at it this way ,, you had time to enjoy your stay in the US without diving right back into your books.Personally I think it was good that you chose not to take it right after you landed here :) You have good scores by just any std's so dont let yourself down. Its just that there are too many applicants & very very few seats making life diffcult for all of us.

Most schools do say that they would also consider part 2 if you have already given it, How that works is if they have 2 appilcants with the same part 1 scores ,experience etc , then they would choose the one with both part 1 & 2, But if they have someone with good part 1 scores & one with ok part 1 & good part 2 scores they'd still prefer the one with a better part 1 as that was a "requirement".

The best way to find out if you have a chance is to contact someone ( student) from that school & ask for the last yrs cut off score ( not the one they mention on the website), most schools stick to their avg scores & schools with tech test give a lot of weightage to the practical skills. (Lomalinda,UOP,USC,UCSF, UCLA)
".
I know a few ppl who had to retake the exam & they did very very well.
Alright Iam getting outta here...

Good Luck !

Hi Everyone, :)

Perplexed,
Thanks so much for all the advice and encouragement. :) It really helps to know that u know people who retook the exam and did very well. You are the first person who told me that I shld retake the exam and also that someone actually did well.Otherwise who ever I spoke to(my friends from my school who took their Part 1 before me) told me that I shld not retake Part 1 and also they told me of ppl who did worse.Infact just today morning,my husband and I almost made the decision that I shld retake Part 1 as he also thinks that a handsome part 1 would be preferred over an ok part 1 and a good part 2.

I would really like to contact those people who retook their Part 1 and did better the next time.So would it be possible for u to give me their ids so that I can contact them and know what they did different the next time.
Or if anyone of u has retaken part 1 and done better, please let me know.

Also,I have 95 edition of dental decks. This time I would like to study from the most recent edition. So if anyone is interested in selling their part 1 decks to me or knows of anyone who has them, please let me know.

Also what is the general opinion about kaplan books.Does anyone have them for sale too?

Also I wish u all good luck with ur schools and admissions.I hope I can get into some school sometime.

Thats all for now.Hope u all have a nice day and a lovely weekend.............

Hi drmouse,
Just a short note here.
Good decision ! Now that you already have the hang of it (NBD1) you'll do very well. You already know that you can get up to 83, so with just a lil more reference & brush ups you do very very well.( diff bet each % is just a couple of questions) I find it hard to believe that ppl do bad in their 2nd attempt, doesnt that defy logic ?
Its not some astrological phenomenon that says you will do worse in the second attempt, if you keep focused u'll ace it. It'll be much easier for you this time.

I'll have to get back to you on the contacts etc .
( my friends did join kaplan thou , frankly I think the dental decks you have right now , combined with kaplan will do the work .)
Take care !

Hi! Everyone,
I'm planning to apply to Boston and NYU basically to give it a shot and see where I stand with my Part I score which I believe is not at all handsome.
The deadline for BU is 1st March and for NYU is 5th March, unfortunately my TOeEFL score expired last month, therfore I'm trying my best to find a testing center to take this test ASAP.
I'm requesting for your help to answer the question "Briefly note any activity to date which has been your most fulfillig experience" for BU and "Personal statement outlining your interest in the profession of dentistry and academic goals you wish to achieve at NYUCD" for NYU.(This is part of the application process)
Kindly let me know(post) of your responses as soon as possible because I have to mail these applications by Monday(11th Feb) to have a real shot for admission this fall (of course if they like everything else and I'm able to arrange for loans). Thanks a lot ,I'd appreciate your prompt response. Thanks!!!!

HI drmouse,
Let me go straight to your questions
BU
You should first pick one of your most fulfiling work preferably in the area of your expertise ( prostho , perio , surgery, pedo just any),I chose surgery & elaborated on the canine impaction I did during internship. Just make sure you know everything abt the topic you choose to write about.
ps- Bu didnt discuss abt my work (canine impaction) during the interivew.

NYU-
Basically they want to know why u r interested in dentistry, so why did you choose dentistry ?
I would say something like ...wanting to be in a profession where I would be able to combine my academic skills with my artistic skills ...
Goals at NYU-
To learn the modern methods in the field of dentistry since I've graduated & to be able to brush up with my practical skills , you can also talk abt your PG aspiration & so on ..

To ALL
That was just my opinion , please feel free to tell her what you all think is appropriate.

Thanks for the info regarding DAT.
Just to make sure how are u applying to BU ?coz i don't remember coming across "fulfilling experience..."in online application.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Perplexed for the answers. It is really very kind of you to give ur answers to me.

However today morning I tried talking to Kevin, the co-ordinator at BU for international program.According to him I shld retake Part 1 and improve my scores and not waste money trying to apply for this year as I am already very late and this year so far whatever seats have been filled have gone to students with 86 or 87.Now what do you guys think if it comes straight for the horses mouth. He also said that it would make no difference if I take Part 2 as they would look at my Part 1 scores and they prepare us for Part 2.So it would not matter how I do in Part 2.In any case I was taking a shot and was thinking of retaking Part 1 if I don't get in.but now I am definitely retaking part 1.So any help will be really appreciated.

Mehr,u are welcome.I had a form for UIC and could find the number for DAT on that.So I just gave it to you. Also I found that question for BU on both online application as well as the hard copy.I wonder why u didn't find it.Also last time I studied from old dental decks 95 edition. But I think there is a 2001 edition for sure as there is this person selling them on ebay. Will see how it works out.Anyway, would u please share with me how u studied for ur part 1.

Hey perplexed, any luck with the contacts. Please try.I would really appreciate it.

Well thats all for now.U guys take care and have a nice day.............. :)

Hi all!
I am one of those confused advanced standing applicants looking for some information.
I got 88 in my part 1, and have been enrolled in a Master of Public Health and hope to complete it pretty soon. Because of several reasons, mainly financial, i was not able to apply early for different universities and all i could apply at the time that i applied was Boston University and NYU.
I applied pretty late like the 10th of January 2002. What do you think my chances are for this years program?
I really would appreciate some insight into what you guys think is my position here.
Thanks all!

Have you got an interview from BU, yet ?( If you havent got a call yet , call them up ). You stand a very good chance there. You can also try UPENN , they'll have seats available till the very end , your masters in pubilc health will also help you immensely
Future dentist,
Do call them up to check , I wonder why it's taking them so long to get back to you , they might be finalizing the regular batch ( 3rd-2nd year)eh ? They have a space based program, its also candidate based ( they decide which yr program that particular candidate will be doing.. 2yr or 3yr program ), This year they plan to accept only 5 students too.
Good luck & keep us posted.

Merl, what are your scores? I did not apply for UPenn. I did hear from them saying that they received my application and that the requirements for the interveiw are that u should get 580 in TOEFL and 82+ in NBDE 1... and that if I did, I MIGHT hear from them about the interview. So that was not very reassuring...

The adv of taking part 2 before schools starts has just one benefit ie ...
YOU ARE DONE WITH IT ...

Most ppl prefer to give it when they are in schools as they coach you for it , but if you've already taken it then you can focus your attention on the more pressing things at school.
So you save some time when u r in school & its less stressful to take it now . But a disadvantage to it is .. you may not do as good or will have to work harder if you give it before you join school.
Just my 2 cents..

What exactly does stalled means?. Does it mean I have hope or there is absolutely no chance in hell?. Apparently, they haven't yet filled even one of the 5 positions offered. I wonder why they are taking so long to fill up 5 positions?. Meanwhile, it is killing me. I just wish they will tell yes or no. Getting fed up.

Hi perplexed,
Thank you for your reply and PM. I just wish they would get it over with either way. I am an Indiana resident ( have been in Indiana for the past 6 years) with green card. I am eligible for the resident tuition fee and my husband has a good job here and cannot move. I am also in the family way and the best bet for me would be to join here. Hence, I did not apply to any other school. If I really dont get it this year, maybe I will apply to other schools next year. I hope and pray that I dont have to do that.
How about u?. How long have you been here. By the sound of your posts, I guess you havent been long in the US. And already you have many acceptances under your belt right?. That is really great. Good luck to you in whichever program you choose to attend.

Thanks for your encouragement. I am done with the nausea part. :) Thank god. On a different topic, I dont mean to pry. I saw one of your earlier post that said that you are getting International loan from Teri. Is it the kind of loan offered without the citizen or permanent resident's cosignature?. The reason I didnt join any advanced standing program till now was because I thought that getting a loan without a green card or without citizen or permanent resident's signature was nil (even for private loans). I hope I havent wasted so much time because of this. Please, enlighten me on this. By the way, how did your interview with UCSF go?.

If you can, try to register for the practice session prior to the interview. Its $60/- or so for that. UOP usually select 5 candidates from each batch.

Hi perplexed:

Do you have statistics of the costs (tuition, living exp., etc) of the different Adv. Stand. programs? I am joining BU's program in August, and I would like to now how expensive is this school compared with other options. I only applied to BU and Tufts because my husband works here (Boston); but after reading your post I am curious how expensive is BU when compared with other (cheaper-!) alternatives.

Just for reference, total BU's budget for the first year is around 67K (tuition + living exp); the second year is lower, around 55K.

Hi doctress,
All the private schools that offer advanced standing program is very expensive. Only the state schools offer cheaper fees compared to the private schools. For ex, IU School of dentistry offers adv standing program and the tuition fees is 28,196$ per year. When compared to BU the fees is cheaper I think. IU also offers 3 year, 2 year, and even 1 year program based on the assessment of candidate's skills. The only catch with state schools is that very few positions are offered. IU offers only 5 seats every year. The competetion is very tough. The cost of living in Indianapolis is also very cheap. Hope that helps

futuredentist, perplexed:

Certainly IU looks cheaper than BU! But , as you said, all the schools that offer the Advanced Standing program are expensive.

Sometimes I wonder whether it makes sense to study 2 more years (vs. not doing so and taking California’s test!) cause the investment is huge (140K in 2 years). And I don't know anything about the job market for dentist that finishes Adv. Stand. programs. That makes me think about the next questions (I am sure that perplexed will help me here!) :p

1. Is it easy to find a (GOOD!!) job after graduation??

2.How much should we expect to earn?? Is there any difference between students that finish regular programs and the adv. std. ones?

3. Is it easy to find a job in ANY state (I know that some states like NY require citizenship, and the prospect of ending up living in Arizona (no offenses here) or in the middle of nowhere does not appeal to me!

Thank you guys for your help!

Here's what I think ( this is just what I heard pls dont take my word for it & in the future if u hear something totally diff pls let us all know  )

1. Is it easy to find a (GOOD!!) job after graduation??

Yes.. you'll find a job .. but it'll take a while before you get what you want .. It also depends on which place you are looking for a job ... Remote(rural) place have more vacancies usually.

2.How much should we expect to earn?? Is there any difference between students that finish regular programs and the adv. std. ones?

No, I dont think there's a diff once you graduate, you won't get a very good pay for a while ( until they think you are competent & you can do the job at a normal pace ( their normal pace :D ).

3. Is it easy to find a job in ANY state (I know that some states like NY require citizenship, and the prospect of ending up living in Arizona (no offenses here) or in the middle of nowhere does not appeal to me!

NY doesnt req citizenship as far as I know . All you need to do is give the licensing exam in the state you want to practice ( there are a few expections to that , Iam not familiar with that ).

Futuredentist.
Once you graduate from IUPUI can u practice anywhere in the US ? ( I've already taking it for granted that u r in ....that's a good sign, isnt it ? )

I cant help feeling this way . Iam I the only one trying to share info here...(along with the few more ppl , thnx guys )... It would really be great if all of us could share info & help each other out .. I dont know ...Iam just thinking aloud.

Hi perplexed,
Thanks for your confidence in me. I am not so sure. IU gives first preference to candidates who are faculty there, who are doing postgraduate program there and then only residents of Indiana. I only hope your words will come true. Sure, you can prcatice anywhere in the US once you graduate from IU. It is like any other advanced standing program. Only you have to take the regional licensing boards of the state you intend to practice.
Hi doctress,
Personally, I think going through the program is better than just taking the california boards.
Because, then you will be bound to practicing only in California. You cant practice elsewhere. Also, you wont get the respect you deserve, same as you get when you complete your DDS.
This is just my opinion. What's wrong with going to a rural place to practice?. Rural places are the best places to bring up kids, cost of living is cheaper and you get more respect. This is what I have personally seen with many foreign trained physicians who prcatice in rural areas. I assume it would be the same with foreign trained dentists. In cities, the competetion is very tough with regard to jobs. Where the competetion is high, I think preference would be given to candidates who have undergone the regular DDS program. If anyone who knows different please feel free to correct me. Anyway, good luck to you.

GO FOR IT
Register for the practice session, try to contact your local dentist & ask him /her if you can practice. Even if you can't practice its alright, do your interview well.
If you dont get it, so what ?? It'll be an experience in many ways. Just go for it . It'll help you in the long run .
All the very best .
(BTW :- if u have a dental school close by .. ask them to help you out .)

Hi guys!

I've been trying to find rankings for dental schools, but it seems that there is no ranking available. Do you know any way to rank Dental schools, especially the ones that offer the Advanced Standing Program???? Which school is 1st or 2nd tier????

Hey guys!
Perpelexed thanks for the reply and the PM.. sorry it took so long to get back to you.
As of now, NYU said that they are full, and that they will not take a decision on my application until they have a vacancy, and BU has been a real pain. Kevin Acone, does not reply to emails, phone calls, whatever.
Anyways, are there anybody who has applied late and has not heard from BU yet? Anyone knows what the status is for this year? Any learned opinions on my position?
Thanks guys,

hi i am the new comer to this forum.
and i was very excited to get so many informations you have shared.

i have a question so i hope i can get your help.

due to my particular situation i can apply for the program which start in 2004 academic year.
so i am preparing now for part 1 exam

can i apply for the program year earlier like predental student does a year earlier?
(i heard that applying earlier is possible for predent and med student)

i can't be sure the question is understandable to you.
anyway thank you and hope your help.

ps congratulation on everybody who get admission for the program and good luck to your future in another dental school.

NO advantage comes from applying for the program an year earlier. You will have to pay an application fee the first time you submit your application form & then for re-activation you'll have to pay another fee ( the equal amt ) very few schools do not req re-activation fee.
Most schools also req the part 1 NDB scores even before they can review your file.
There are schools that will accept your application form provided you take the exam before the interview or soon after.

Hope this has helped clear up your doubts.

i wondered that if i am eligible for the acceptance (of course, after they review all my documets including my part 1 score, my dental school gpa, etc), i can get interview invitation also a year earlier and get acceptance also year earlier.

is this same with what you understand perplexed?

From what I gather, you want to know if you can actually get accepted a year before you can actually join the course , right?
Yes you can .. I dont know how many schools do that thou ,,,but it certainly is an option... You'll have to pay a deposit of about $1000 ( after you get accepted )or more.... Not all schools have this option, you'll have to contact each school individually ... I also dont think they like to entertain such options... Its definitely not encouraged by them.

THANK YOU Perplexed. I am going to have a blast. I am now waiting for the official letter to arrive. Hey, What about you?. Have you decided where you are going to join?. I am sure you will do well wherever you go. I am still in a pleasent state of shock.
Hey solafide,
I agree with perplexed. Not all schools allow you to hold the seat. As far as I know NYU, Boston, does that. But, I am not too sure. Best thing is to ask the schools directly before you start applying and avoid wasting a lot of money. Many schools offer regular DDS program offer that way. I am not sure about the advanced standing program though. Good luck.
To any advanced standing program applicant with young babies,
I was just wondering how advancing standing student with infants and newborns manage the program as well as having to look after baby. Is it hard?. Or is it manageable?. My due date is somewhere in end of June and I might be starting the program on in the mid-late July. I am going to try and get 2 weeks of maternity leave. If unable to do so, will it be tough to manage?. Thanks a bunch.

I am in the same boat. My baby is almost 2 months old and I will start BU's Advanced Stand. in August.

This was a concern when I applied to the program; they told me that it is going to be difficult but not impossible, and that every year Adv Std programs accept many students with childrens, and that is not a big barrier to obtain your degree.

In my case, I am bringing somebody from my country to help me with the baby during the day. The other possibility is daycare, although they tend to be VERY expensive (around $1500 for newborns).

Why dont you e-mail me to discuss this, I can give you some tips :)

Hi doctress,
Thanks for your kind reply. My mom is coming to help me with the baby till the baby is six months old (provided she gets her visa). But, I am kind of worried after that. I dont know whether it is a good idea to send a 6 month old to daycare. Do they even take a 6 month old?. Also, even with help, is it going to be tough?. These are the questions that goes through my mind. I have baby sat a newborn before for a friend. I can take care of a newborn by myself. I just worried that whether I can get good grades and study in school and also take care of the baby. Are you taking care of your 2 month old by yourself?. Is it a boy or a girl?. I am going to have a boy. I am thrilled about the baby, but at the same time I am worried whether I can do well in school too. Only time will tell, huh?.
Hi solafide,
You are welcome.
p.s - Can someone tell me how to p.m. I am not very good with computers.

Hi futuredentist, perplexed:

I am doing pretty much the same. My mom is comming for 6 months :D and the my mother in law for the next 6 . I believe that your mother wont have problems with the visa as long as you demonstrate that you have the resources to maintain her for 6 months.

Regarding daycare, some of them accept 6 month-old babies but it will be more expensive than, lets say, 3-4 yr.old kids. Here in Boston costs can easily surpass 1500/month, so it is cheaper (and safer, I don't feel like living a small kid with someone I dont really know) if you are able to bring your mother from your country.

Grades?, well, it's gonna be very difficult to be among the firsts in your class because it will be very difficult to compete with students that do not have additional responsabilities but studying. Even with your mom help, you will need to dedicate some time to your baby (unless you want him not to recognize you!!).

My baby is a boy!

To Futuredentist:

First you need to decide whether to feed your baby breast milk or formula. Formula feeding is much easier for you although breast milk is the best for baby. Because you don't have to get up at night several times to feed the baby by yourself. No matter what, you definitly need your family's support. Time is important for you, baby is also important. Only with family's support, you will get both. Wish you all the best!

Hi Mom's & mom's to be :) ..
I just read ster's post and wanted to add my 2 cents. I recently went for a class on breast feeding. Well actually, one of my friends is pregnant & she needed company to go for that class so she dragged me along :D .
In that class they spoke about breast pumps for mom's who wont be around too much to feed the baby all the time. I think that's a great idea.
Also about 8 times a day feeding (minimum) rather than feeding every 3 or so hrs that way you can also get a good nights sleep.

Sorry for the late reply. Had guests at my house and cooking for them and entertaining them took all my time. Thanks to everybody for their kind suggestions. I am going to breast feed the baby. I have no doubts about that. It is good for the baby. The idea of breast pumps sounds intriguing. I will be going to breast feeding classes soon. No doubt they will tell me all about that. I hope with my mom and my husband's help I will be able to manage. I am not planning on topping the class. But, I just dont want a pass grade. I am aiming for "B" grades. Hey perplexed, congrats on your decision to attend UCSF. San Francisco is an awesome place. Hills on the one side and sea on the other. Truly a magnificient place. Nothing like Indiana at all (flat landscape). Also, the school is good I heard. Again thanks to doctress, perplexed, and ster for your kind suggestions. I found it useful.

Hi pkm, I wish I could answer to all of your questions. But here are few. Housing near NYU is reaaally expensive unless you want to stay an hour-45 min away from the school and would share an apartment with somebody. An average room in NYU or near it would cost around $1000. NYU is supposed to be a tough school. What happened with your BU interview. Also can you PM me your scores and when did you apply. I am asking you this coz I have a BU interview coming up and I want to know what they expect.

I went to dental school 6 years ago.I am in the military in a field not related at all with dentistry.
I am thinking about going to dental school but I am extremely confused between the 2 options of :
1 Take DAT and do all 4 years again
2 Take NDBE and do the 3 years

I have contacted army personnel and I have been told that they would pay for me to go to school. All I need is acceptance to a school.
As they are going to payfor it, doing the extra year is noy such a dilemma.

I haven't had any practice all these years and left all my books home when I came to the States.
I have found a lot of review books regarding the DAT but nothing regarding the NDBE.
I did order the NDBE past examinations set that is available. However,I am not sure if studying these will be enough to take take and pass the Boards.
Any suugestions?Would the past examinations be sufficient as study material or are the Boards as complicated as they appear to be.
Is there any more study/review material outthere regarding NDBE?
Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.
Regards

Iam a lil bit confused with your situation ..
1. Are you planning to go back to school 'cause you didnt have any practical exposure after you gradutated ? OR
2 . Are you seriously planning to get a US Degree so that you can practice in the US ?

priya26

Welcome Apex, I think if I were in your situation I would go for taking NDBE-1. Just read dental decks nicely. Believe me this will be enough. If you have ASDA questions, do that as practice. Although money is not a consideration in your case but still this way you'll save a year or two depending on the school you go to. Also you'll be done with one of your boards which is a big relief anyway. I have been out of touch with dentistry for years now but part-1 was a piece of cake. Good Luck.

If you didnt have any touch with dentistry for a long time , I suggest you keep aside 6 months time for preparation (I think kaplan course also helps).. I know there are ppl who did it in 2 months, but I would advice against that . There are a lot of advanced standing students with a lot of questions and so we most definitely need a forum.

I have been lurking here (reading but not posting) for quite sometime before I decided to post.

Let me tell you my story. When I came to the USA, I did not know that Kaplan had a course for dentists.I registered for July 2000 NDBE and found the occlusion part of Dental Anatomy very difficult. Few days before the exam, I backed out, then found out about Kaplan, joined the course and gave the exam in Dec 2000. I still did not know about Dental Decks and the existance of this friendly forum then. I only read big fat text books, released papers and used Kaplan for Dental Anatomy. I got a score of 89 in Part I. But was disappointed with the score a bit. I graduated in 1993, which means I did my first year in 1989-90. Also completed my Internship and Masters degree and worked for 2-years in my country.

I went to give my TOEFL and on the day of the exam, just as I was about to enter, I found out that I was wrongly registered for GRE!!! The official insisted that almost all the foreign students give GRE and so I should give that too!! Finally they accepted that it was their fault, refunded my money and let me appear for TOEFL. Ha! Ha!! My heart was pounding when I sat there listening ?? to the listening comprehension!! All I could hear was my heart beat!!

Applied for UPenn, interviewed, rejected.

Tried requesting application materials through e- mail from UConn, received a mail that read "We need atleast a 91 in Boards, to send you the application form". That reeeaaallly irritated me.

Applied for Stony Brook, received e-mail that they will let me know if there is an opening!

Applied to BU, received a letter stating that their class is full for the year and so will be considered for next year with an application processing fee!

Decided to give TSE also, no centers were available in my state drove all the way to Pennsylvania, stayed in a hotel and gave exam. One month later notified by TSE that due to a technical fault my answers were not recorded in the tape!!! I really wanted to put a gun to my head. They had automatically reassigned a seat for me in the same center a month later, though this time a centre was available close to home. Again went to Penn and gave exam, scored 55/60!!

Applied and interviewed in Tufts (applied in May before they had made Part II mandatory)Looked like they were extremely interested in my credentials but asked me to give Part II as soon as possible and I would be on their list. That was encouraging.

Just for Tufts admission I didnt want to jeopardize my Part II exam scores. But didnt have any other way out. Was depressed and very angry. BUT WAS NOT WILLING TO GIVE UP!!! NOT ONE BIT.

Studied dental decks and almost all the released papers for exactly 25 DAYS and appeared for Part II in computer. Finally got an interview from BU on the same day of the exam and postponed the interview. Gave exam and scored 88. Sent my marks to Tufts but their class was full and I was waitlisted.

Got a letter from BU 15-days before the interview that they could not locate any of my recommendation letters. They had lost all the letters I sent them. That was it ! I erupted like a volcano. K.Acone told me that I could submit letters from dentists I was working for in the USA. Spent a lot of money calling and finally got a letter from the Dean of the college I worked for, back home.

Went to BU interview in Nov.2001. Interviewer spoke to me saw my credentials and told me that I would be selected!!!I had not submitted my part II scores. I wanted to give her a big hug! I have a 4.0 GPA in course-by-course ECE evaluation in all subjects from first to final year, 2-Goldmedals and several awards. Also have a publication in an International Journal.I received my admission notification and that was the happiest day of my life. Later also received admission from Tufts for 2003 fall, but I rejected the offer. I am happy as a clam right now. Going to BU in Aug. Applied for FAFSA.

Folks! When the going gets tough, the tough get going! Believe in yourself, workhard and suddenly one day you will look back and laugh at that string of bad luck. Good luck to you all.Believe me!! everyone of you will get a seat. Just don't give up hope.

Excellent 2nd post Beetle. I applaud you on your persistance & perseverance. Thank you for posting this experience of yours. For all of us here & the future IDP students this is and will be an inspiration.

I hope everyone of the IDP students would look ahead as you did. I've noticed that most for the foreign graduates are very hesitant to come forward to share their experience or even ask doubts. Some of them had come out of their shell but seems to have gotten back into it again.

I think a seperate forum will help them be more forthright. C'mon ppl this will be your only chance , where are you guys ?????
I'll have to call you all by your ID'S if it goes like this .

Thanks Cinnamon (I am a big fan of yours!!)orange04 and Kemi for your replies.

I forgot to add that I was also rejected at Columbia. I had also applied to Univ of Pittsburgh and Detroit Mercy and was seriously considering applying to Nova. I was called for an interview at UPitt in late Feb. but didn't go there because, I most definitely wouldn't block the chance of an other deserving candidate. I had received my notification from BU by then. Just yesterday, I received a communication from Detroit that they dont have any vacancy for adv. standing this year.

Got some work to do.Have to go now. Meanwhile all of you still hibernating over there!!! Wake up! it's spring!! Keep posting your thoughts and questions. Will see ya tomorrow!!!

Hi everyone,
I totally agree that we should have a forum devoted to adv standing students issues.Yeah! especialy in light of the growing number of applicants ,life could be made a lot easier with some good advice/info.I don't have much info to share, right now coz I'm only just taking my part-1 in july (still a rookie!)
I vote yah yah for the Adv Std'n forum. Good work and more grease to your elbows. :D

Hi Docie,

Congrats on your acceptance to UConn. If you could share your info about the UConn bench test, it would be very helpful to everyone.

Hi Bobby,

Nice of you to post. Goodluck to you. Study hard and don't let anything distract you till the exam!! Good to have two schools offering Advanced Standing in your state of residence. Do post a request to Lee on the topic Attn Lee A Burnett in the pre-dental forum.

Everyone this is one of the best threads evr, seriously what you are doing here is magnificent. everyone is helping everybody out to try to prevent them from making mistakes done before, really working as a team for the best for everyone. Henna you are really a nice kind person to share your experience with everyone and hepl everyone and Beetle your story really gave me hope and inspired me . everybody keep this up please.

I would like to tell you my situation and please advice me on what to do best!!!

I am currently a dental student in my foreign country I have 1 year back home to graduate, then I have 1 year training or an internship if you would call it. I would like to come here in the us and continue my education as a dentist and practice dentistry here. I have attempted ndb part 1 in dec 2002 but unfortunately scored 77 and got a 73 in anatomic sciences section but over passed . I was really discouraged and frustrated and felt that i would just stay in my home country but after hearing beetle's story I have decided to not let this discourage me at all but inspire me.

Anyways i would like to know which is better getting into an advanced 2 year standing program and recieving a D.D.S or D.M.D or taking a 2year specialty residency or taking a 2 year general practice residency. also i just heard that minnesota has this bench exam as that of california which you can take after part 1 and 2 then be licesened in thei
