I know it has been commented to some extent on this forum, but could someone please comment on the variation in salary and lifestlyes between the ophthalmology subspecialties (including the general ophthalamologist)? I know retina makes the most, but also works the most.

Thanks

Anyone else have any input? How does the lifestyle vary between general ophthal, pedi, oculoplastics, retina, glaucoma, neuro-ophthal, etc...? The lifestyle part is very important to me, but I'd like to have some idea of what the other fields are like from people in the know.

Can anyone comment on what call is like as a private practice vs. an academic ophthalmologist?

i don't know what stage in your education you're in, but i'd suggest doing an elective rotation.

all fields in ophth have a better lifestlye than say gen surg.
there are other fields however that have just as good if not better lifestyles.
that's why i suggest doing a rotation to see if you like it better than those other fields.

even if i were to work only 40-50hrs/week as ophthalmologist, that would be heck of a lot of time to be spending doing something i didn't like.

hope that helps somewhat.

good luck.

I'm a 3rd year at a top 10 school and I spent time doing ophthal research last year. I know I have the interest, but I'm beginning to see that the different subspecialties within ophthal are quite different as far as lifestyle and pay go. I was just wondering if someone could post their experiences as far as how the salary and lifestyle vary. Thanks.
