View Full Version : Interview invites 2006
gagolden 09-08-2006, 01:54 PM Just curious
When should we start expecting interview invites? I've talked to some people who have multiple invites for FP, Peds, and Neuro. I still got one program that hasn't downloaded my app yet!
mig26x 09-08-2006, 02:46 PM I read on the general residency forum that Georgetown already has given a few invites.
lakerfan 09-08-2006, 02:55 PM Georgetown invited on Wed 9/6 via email.
medstud2006 09-09-2006, 12:07 PM UTSW sent out invites by email only (no ERAS message) on Friday

synonomous18 09-11-2006, 04:50 PM Received a "thank you for applying. we look forward to reviewing your completed application."
medstud2006 09-11-2006, 06:28 PM my app was complete (LORs, terrible picture, transcript, etc.) with the exception of the IM department chairman's letter
toogood1 09-12-2006, 07:46 AM my application was also complete except for the mspe, which isn't available until nov. 1. I submitted my application on the Sept. 3, 2006; I feel pretty blessed to have an interview this early in the game.

Does your personal statement just scream "academic medicine?" Just curious what they may be basing this on.
toogood1 09-13-2006, 08:17 AM Just got IM invite from UT in Memphis!
My PS doesn't scream academic medicine, as far as I can tell (at least I did not write it with that in mind). I do have a lot ofresearch experience. Maybe they saw my CAF publications/experience. I don't know. I'm actually surprised that they actually read a lot of the app already.

48 hours 09-16-2006, 05:38 PM Hey - just curious (since I am seeing all these interview notices and have none - just 2 "thank you for your interest" emails) .... has anyone been offered an interview without all of you LOR in? I only have 3/4 uploaded for IM (one of the 3 is my dept chair letter, though).
Anyway, just curious?
Thanks a lot... it's nice to read where other people are at in this crazy process....
Mumpu 09-16-2006, 08:53 PM FYI, most places will not offer you interviews until your Dean's Letter comes in on November 1 (or whatever the date is this year). You may hear from your home program sooner than that. Considering that the interview season does not start until mid-November at the earliest, y'all should chill, open a beer, and enjoy the fourth year. Even if your email is typed in wrong, all messages will show up in ERAS.

I got the same message today.
48 hours 09-22-2006, 05:02 PM yea, anyone else get a very apologetic sounding email from Mayo about how just because they havn't started asking people for interviews yet, doesn't mean they're not interested and blah, blah...
DrHeartMD 09-22-2006, 07:25 PM having gone through this process not too long ago, i just wanted to indicate that the time at which you receive these interviews has little bearing on how good of an applicant you are. some programs review applications in the order they were received, some do it by location, some do it by screening factors (so sometimes it does matter if you're a stronger applicant), and some just do it at random. As an example, I received interviews at MGH, BWH and JHU (november) before receiving an interview at NYU (december) or Jefferson (december). So these "rounds of interviews" you guys speak of arent really like first cut, second cut etc in most cases. Good luck to everyone. and Ill be checking the site periodically to help ppl out so feel free to pm with any questions as the process goes along...if you want some answers from someone who already went through the process. Also I'd be happy to help people applying to columbia in answering some of their questions to the best of my ability.
medlaw06 09-24-2006, 07:36 AM I just wanted to make a comment based on my observations from last year: SDN has a disproportionate amount of gunners and hotshots. Hey all...Mumpu is ABSOLUTELY right....it's funny how all this seems like just yesterday when I was applying....I am currently an intern in NYC....anyways, Mumpu is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!!! There are alot of people on this site who do alot of talking about this and that....if you haven't heard from a program DO NOT FREAK OUT!!! 11/1 and afterwards is when you'll get a majority of your interviews....as well as rejections (just being honest)....JUST RELAX!! (and I know it's SOOOOO hard to do that....trust me, last year I was one of those freaks who would check my e-mail q5 minutes to see if I got another interview...it's so funny reading some of these posts again since I realize that I am not the only wierdo:love:   )
It's true though...looking back, it REALLY didn't make a difference whether or not some program hadn't offered me an interview and were offering someone else....they will get to you eventually (whether for the positive OR the negative)....
True...if you have like a 99/99 and 18+ pubs, then you'll get an interview earlier than someone else....but like us normal people who fit nicely under the bell curve, these interviews won't be coming 'til after 11/1!!
SERIOUSLY...try to relax and enjoy 4th year....it's the last time you can truly relax since internship sucks!!....just a word of advice.....take it as you will...
GOOD LUCK!!!

48 hours 09-29-2006, 09:47 AM I don't think it's too late to apply to IM. In fact, I would say anything before Nov. 1st is probably ok as many programs wait for the MSPE to be released anyway. I think people just recommend submitting as soon as possible so that you have the best possible opportunity to get the interview dates that you want before they fill up.
So, go ahead and apply!

Alot of programs specify that you send the Chairperson letter and 2 LOR from IM department at your school or of an externship that you did.
uclabruins47 10-01-2006, 08:08 PM Does anybody know if the chair letter counts against our 4 letters in ERAS? Do I need to specify my chair letter to go to each program, or do schools automatically send them and they don't count against the max of 4 letters?
yes your chairman letter counts as 1 of the 4 max letters. it isn't like the deans letter where it is automatically sent. and yes, you ahve to specify just like any other LOR
kreno 10-01-2006, 09:38 PM are you sure about that? because that's not what the chair of medicine at my school said. therefore, i have 3 or 4 letters marked for each school, AND the dean's AND the chairs letter
mig26x 10-01-2006, 09:51 PM I already have my school chairperson IM letter and I put it as another LOR with the other 2 IM letter. In the letter Im sure it says that its from the Chairperson of the IM department.
Dont worry, programs know what letter is from the chairperson.

and also, if you have 4 letters marked for a school, how are you going to send in the Chairman letter?
Dean's letter is separate so there's no problem with that

I submitted my app last Sunday and for almost every program I'm missing a LOR. I have yet to receive any interview invites. Perhaps programs want to see all LORs in, or more likely, it's just still early in the game.

Per the IM program director at my home institution, most competitive programs will not start reviewing your file until all of your LoRs are in. Some also wait for the MSPEs. So sit tight.
Anecdotally, it seems accurate. I've only 1/12 interviews so far--the only one being the one that's complete (used a different 4th letter for home institution).

Thanks for the help. I've heard from my home institution and a couple other places which were supposed to be my "safeties" so I became a little anxious. I reviewed some of the websites of the programs and they're in more or less agreement with what your PD said. I think I just wish it was 3/16 already.

Hey BD-
Yea, I had in everything but my MSPE and one of my LOR. So, I bet it's the transcript thing like you said. Plus, U of C is my med school, too, but I don't know if that matters. Once programs get your transcript downloaded, I'm sure you'll hear from them. It's still really early, too. Good luck!

last post.
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound sh*tty. It's just that I have my sub-I in November and a consult service in January, so I have fewer spots. And I applied to more programs, because I never expected to get an interview from UCSF or UMich or any program like that! Anyway, sorry to have offended anyone. I was just curious how back to back others were making their flight plans, etc. I'm sorry, though. I'll stop posting.

If you are applying in categorical IM, there's no way you could have gotten a Hopkins interview within the last few days. According to their program's website:
"All applicants will be reviewed the week of November 3rd. All applicants will be notified via e-mail November 13, 2006. "
Anyway, for all the people worrying about not hearing from the programs, you don't need to panic. A lot of programs will be sending out most of their invitations in November after the MSPE/dean's letters are out. Goodluck everyone.

(Note: above is also sarcasm)
rachana 10-19-2006, 09:43 AM I applied to a LOT of IM categorical problems and the interview invites have been coming in steady. I have December and January off as vacation to interview, so I have not been scheduling most interviews as they come in. I was thinking I would wait, see what all comes in, and then maybe about halfway through November schedule things by geographical area for the two months of Dec and Jan. This way I could see what academic/better program invites I got before agreeing to interview at all the community programs that invited right away and can schedule things geographically to make travel easier. BUT it seems like other people just started scheduling as each interview came in. I don't want to be screwed later if there are no more interview slots left! What should I do? I'm in the middle of away electives right now and will definitely do my interview at the away place while I'm here.

the clerkship director at my med school specifically told me not to wait, instead schedule interviews so that you can reserve a spot and if you need to change it later, then fine...he recommended against waiting in case all the spots fill up. hope that helps.

Did UCSD turn you down, or are you just lamenting that others have received interview invites already and you haven't? I didn't think residencies would turn people down this early, especially pre-MSPE, but I could be wrong.

I didn't originally pick up on the sarcasm either, but just to add to the above post, i was about to call bulls**t on this person based on the mass general website's application page:
http://www.massgeneral.org/medicine/medicine_res_apply_us.asp
where it says: "Invitations will be sent in late November"
As an aside, if I applied to UCSD but didn't get an invitation yesterday as one of the above posters did, do I consider that a rejection unless proven otherwise? Or do they send out invitations on more than one occasion?
While I'm flattered to have received invitations already, it would bother me if I got rejected from any program before my Dean's letter is released on nov 1st because you would think that a document that contains a summary of my academic performance in med school would matter...at least as much as anything else that's been uploaded to ERAS....but then again it just suggests one thing: board score cutoffs. Oh well. Pisses me off that you can go to a top ten med school, publish over 10 articles, win a bunch of prestigious awards, work your butt off to get all honors grades during third year, and other stuff that i consider accomplishments and your app can be tossed in the trash if you don't score above an arbitrary number on a standardized test. Are places like that looking for good test takers, or people that will make good doctors?
Don't mean to vent, but it's just frustrating knowing that some programs filter out applicants based on board scores alone, cause it downplays everything else we all do in med school that would give programs a sense of who would contribute their talents to a program. My personal gripe is that if I get rejected from some of the academic programs because I don't make a board score cutoff, that's enough of a reason to dump my app, but if I've published more articles than most junior faculty at their institution, no one will ever know cause the secretary won't print it out cause it doesn't make the board score cutoff, which for all i know could be by 1 point. oh well, if that happens then it's just not meant to be.

I definitely agree with you about filtering by board scores alone.
In the case of someone who went to a "top 10 school", had mostly honors during third year and has a lot of publications, who doesn't get an interview from an academic program based on board score cutoff, I believe the Dept of Medicine chair or other well-placed faculty at their school may be able to place a call for the program to take another look at the applicant and probably get them an interview.

94blj 10-21-2006, 10:13 AM hi guys
i received a rejection from columbia by today... i had only one LOR available, no Chair's, no Dean's... and the email was in my ERAS message folder but was not sent to my school acct (yes i checked my spam). i guess this is boards cutoff, but has this happened to anyone else? i feel like they could have waited until my dean's letter came in at least, or some other LORs. their website says that they do not review until your file is complete, so i thought it was a bit premature. i might just call them and ask them to reconsider after 11/1 when Dean's comes out... any advice?

I got a rejection from Columbia as well, and that's with fairly good Step 1, 2 and 3 scores (243/265/258). I am an IMG, which may be why... But I'd wish they'd at least read my Dean's letter before rejecting me!
Tell me what you decide to do anyway, I'm fairly disappointed as well!
I'm so jealous people have heard from UCSF. That is my #1 choice and I'm worried I won't get an interview. :( Oh, well. I would take Stanford, too. I have not heard from either and I submitted Sept 1!
Upside, have interviews at UMich, UChicago, NWU...and not rejections (yet!)
Guess will have to wait until post Dean's letter.....

for rejection or interview. Unless you guys already heard from them already, in which case I have probably already been rejected.
NNguyenMD 10-21-2006, 07:03 PM There are many places, namely the big Chicago area programs and DC programs, that I have heard already offered their interviews to a lot of folks on this board and I haven't heard anything from them.
And that was awhile ago it seems. I am fine accepting if I have been rejected by these programs, but what would be the hold up with sending me a rejection notice so I can cross them off my list?
You think its silly to still hope that they're waiting for my Dean's letter before giving me the big ax?
