View Full Version : Johns Hopkins Chances
Entol 09-12-2006, 06:14 PM Before I even ask, I want to apologize because I always disliked those "what are my chances" posts in allopathic and I never posted a single one!! :-)
I'm interested in cardiology but I was hoping to match into Internal Medicine at Hopkins because I have several family members in Baltimore, so it'd be a great place for me to spend time doing my residency + fellowship. I was curious if anyone could tell me what the likelihood of matching there would be.. I read the interview stats thread and got a little disheartened when I saw so many people declined for interview there. :-(
Top 5 med school (not hopkins)
Step 1: 245
ok letters of recommendation (nothing special)
3 months cardiology research, 2 months ophtho research, no publications
honors in clinics: only 1 out of 9 rotations, HP for rest which is our typical grade
honors in basic science yrs: 7 / 8
class rank: 25-50% percentile (I think, I don't know exactly yet)
I guess my "one-liner" is guy from good med school with good step 1 but few honors in clinics and no pubs.. any idea what my chances are with these?

I would say your chances are pretty good. Obviously honors in your clinical rotations would have been a huge plus. You need to find something to help you stand out of the crowd. If you worked with any former JHU residents/ACS or faculty I would strongly recommend asking them for LOR's or even a call on your behalf. In my very limited experience I have found that JHU is much more impressed with its own people then it is with MD's trained elsewhere. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response! Honors would have definitely helped.. I wish I had done better in 3rd yr.
Is it worthwhile to do an away rotation there and get an LOR from a hopkins faculty?

If you are so inclined to hopkins and would rank that program #1 you might as well do an away, preferably on a cardiology rotation. I think having an interest in an academic career really helps esp at hopkins, so if you do have an interest make sure you state clearly so on your application. The program there is quite a large one, and often times would use "wildcard" factors (as opposed of the typical grades/test/recc's) in determinating who to take, at least judging by people who matched at hopkins for IM.

I was pretty surprised to discover this to be very true. . .they are snobbish like that.
p.s. doing an away rotation is no guarantee there either. Even if you honor it and are well liked, you might not even get ranked.

If you get an LOR it might be worthwhile. I did my away in November which was too late for obtaining an LOR, so if i got one it might have helped more. However what someone said about "wildcard" factors seems to be pretty true. It seems to be more along the lines of special connections one has as opposed to what's in one's porfolio or even a demonstrated interest in academic medicine. It may depend on the department though, but medicine seems to function that way as does anesthesiology. Peds might be less so, though the one guy i know matched there did undergrad at hopkins too. If you dont have the "connections", you better believe grades, scores, AOA, etc are gonna be huge.

I did an away and didn't honor the rotation (or i guess didn't high honor it, since the grade system is high honor, honor, pass, fail), but i still ended up where i rotated (not Hopkins, but similar). So honor might not be necessary either, but the exposure helps if you work hard and people like you. Also if you do away rotation, remember to say hi to the PD.

Well that's kinda what i mean. . .how you do on the rotation doesn't really matter (obviously if you do badly that's never good cause word gets around, but doing well doesn't mean much). You have to pull the right strings with the right people. At hopkins they will take someone less qualified from hopkins over someone not from hopkins, that's 100% true.
