what are the top physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs in the country? id like to hear some opinions. thanx.

As a general rule the best residency programs are affiliated with the best hospitals, although this isn't always the case. Like most things in life, the best program is the one that best meets your own personal needs and expectations. Start here:

Bear in mind that some of those top ranked hospitals do not have a residency program. For instance, Rancho is a good hospital, but they do not have a residency program. The UCLA residents do a few rotations there, but it not considered a top residency. Programs that the more competitve applicants seem to want to go are:

1. Northwestern
2. Harvard
3. Baylor
4. University of Washington
5. UMDNJ - Kessler
6. Mayo Clinic

Others to consider:

1. NYU?? - RUSK as a Rehab Center is world renowned. However, many of the residents seemed unhappy and many applicants seemed to be cancelling their interviews there. I am sure it is still an excellent program and the attendings there are amazing.

2. UTHSCSA - Not a popular program, but it provides excellent training. The person who wrote the book on EMGs is there and the Chairman of the AAPMR is also there.

3. Columbia/Cornell - Seperately the two programs were above average, but the combination of the two this year should make for a great program. I see some growing pains of the combined program initially, but with all the resources that Columbia and Cornell has to offer, I am sure it will develop into one of the top programs soon.

This is not in order and does not mean that the other residencies are not as good. You can have a good residency that people simply don't want to go to. Some people just prefer to be in Chicago or Boston rather than Philly -- go figure. :)

Baylor-Houston. Baylor-Dallas is not a top-10 program. I don't even think the faculty at Baylor-Dallas would rank their residency program in Baylor-Houston's league.

spreesbeers, there is a lot of posts on this forum about the quality of different programs. do some reading, and you'll find lots of good info.

as far as "good hospitals have good PMR programs". uhhhh.... i disagree completely. in fact, i would argue that our field is rare in that there are a lot of great programs at less well known hospitals, and vice versa. lets look at examples:

Mass general: no program
cleveland clinic: no program
johns hopkins: they have a program but..............
duke: i dont THINK they have a program.
UCSF: again, not sure they have a program, but if they do, its not not tier
yale-new haven: no

also, i wouldnt put too much stock into the US News and world report rankings. these are rankings for best rehab hospital, not best PMR programs. there is a big difference.

Dr. Ice....if you are gonna blame anyone, blame platinum princess :D. She commented/asked a question from a thread that was answered 6 years ago. But give her a break....maybe she was in undergrad or even high school six years ago and wasn't on SDN.
