I play piano, but I've officially decided I am withdrawing from NSUCOM. It's been real, but realistically, I wouldn't be able to live in Florida, and I would prefer to be closer to home. So now my choice is between NYCOM and UNECOM. Yes, NSUCOM is a much nicer campus, and the facilities are top notch, but I don't know how happy I would have been there. Anyways, I want to wish you guys once more best of luck. Would have been fun being classmates with ya'll, but I think I'll end up where I'm supposed to.

I was reviewing the class of 2010 thread and they mentioned 3 housing complexes (cedar keys, palm trace, and cameron cove) that were within walking distance to the school. As far as I can tell, they've all gone condo.

Are there any places left near NSU where it's possible to walk to classes?

palm trace isnt walking distance..unless u like to walk 2.5 miles to class..and its not condo...the walkalble ones are sunforest/sundance literally acrosss the street from NSU dental building..still very close to Steele/hpd library

Thanks. I heard mixed reviews about the Sunforest from people. Being "walking distance" from campus is attractive though.

ive got friends in both complexes..IMO i would choose sunforest (directly across the street from the dolphins training center) because it seems more spacious..higher ceilings.. each of the complexes are big itself..so if ur on the other end of the complex it may not be so walking distance..definately biking distance tho..

Has anyone heard anything about Palm Trace? Pros/cons?

I live at palm trace currently...Pros not too close..not too far the route to go to school from palm trace also deals with WAY less traffic ..

Pros: cheap if you have more roommates (1700/mo for 3 ppl) My portion is the most expensive (big room + my own restroom 630/mo) utilities split 3 way is also cheaper..also FULL sized washer/dryer in the apt. wood floor kitchen, everywhere else carpet except bathroom ofcourse...my room also has a huge walk in closet. i can take pics if ppl want..Palm trace also has a lot of amenities (2 or 3 gyms, pools, etc.) they also have a huge lake so if u wanna shell out more money u can have an apt with lake view, all rooms have balconies too.. OH and its right across the street from a Publix (grocery store)..and is connected to a gas station and a CVS (super convenient when u get sick and need some quick drugs)

Cons: can be expensive for 2 ppl or 1 person...i think its near 700/mon for 2 ppl and over 1 G for a 1 br...The biggest con is the Trash system here..you have to take your trash to 1 of 2 places...and since im inbetween both places it sucks...theres one in the front office and another towards the back somewhere....so u'll frequently see ppl driving with trash and crap in their trunk..so they drive the trash to the dumpsters...thats by far the biggest flaw..everything else is pretty much perfect...No party animals near where i am..so i have no problems with noise level when im trying to go to sleep b4 a test or watever.

Awesome. If you could provide pictures, it'd be nice since many of these places have floor plans, but it's hard to imagine the orientation and quality of things from just that. Thanks!

I went snowboarding at Okemo today and realized I won't be able to snowboard if I go to FL... very :(

That is what Thanksgiving break, Winter break, and maybe Spring Break (depending on when it falls--it changes every year) are for. ;)

There are a lot of snowboarders/skiiers in my class--and they seem to find several 3 day weekends to fly north for a last second trip. 2nd year especially, there are quite a few weekends that you can get away for 3 or 4 days w/o missing anything very important. :D

I had to take a week and a half off bc I got in a car accident 1100 miles away and coudln't get back to FL and I had very little problems catching up except for the side effects of my injuries.

DML, how often/for what do you use your computer directly related to med school stuff?

school related..i use it to watch histo dvds...and to use the Netter's anatomy cd ...and also word processing to type stuff up...all the notes are given to you..so noone really brings there laptop to class..u really dont need a good computer for first year. save ur money and buy a good laptop later on ur career

I'm planning on getting by with my older computers throught my didactic years at least. I might get a tablet pc when clinicals start if I find it would come in useful. I currently have a desktop and laptop.


DrLu, do Nova students go out and play sports together or go to the beach regularly or anything?

good idea..thats my plan as well regarding computers.. as far as sports..there are society events..they always play different sports together..the ones that i know of so far are kick ball..and floor hockey..im sure there are more..since i recently discovered this when i was at the gym and saw a bunch of my classmates.. As far as beach..pretty much its a ritual to go after a big test if the weather permits.. it really is the perfect place to go to after a long week of studying...it keeps us all sane.

also for sports..there are a couple of my friends that joined the intramural leagues that play against other colleges/undergrad etc... so there are definately plenty of opportunities for recreation... maybe when u come down u can get me back into bball..i havnt really been playing regularly..and need someone to play against/with :)

I'm having the same thoughts about school reputation. UNE graduates are all over New England, but NSU doesn't have a high representation in New England. However, what truly matters is where you do fourth year electives. I feel fairly confident that I'll be able to secure a few in New England. Of course, this depends on a competitive COMLEX and USMLE score.

Speculation doesn't cut it, but I'm considering all possibilities.

if u feel equally happy at 2 schools..but one is where you want to do residency...go to the closer school!!!..however if u feel that the other school would make you significantly happier and the school is a "better fit" then i suggest go to that school...being happy while in school will likely allow for you to do better in school..relatively to the other school and therefore a better residency at watever location u please..this is my theory anyways ..i'll let u know in 2010 if it works :)

This is the only complex around the school that has 4 bedroom apartments, at least we didn't find any others. If you are looking for just a single or a double though, I would look elsewhere.

you have to send a specific e-mail to SSimpson to get put on the listserv. It's in that letter they send you with instructions on how to set up you're e-mail.

Ahhh that may explain it. I paid by phone and all I received was a letter that had my NSU pin.

here's a lil advice from a 4th yr at nsu who is originally from chi-town(chicago). I got into many schools near home and around the midwest, but I found NSU to be the best fit for me and had the best facilities and rotations that I was looking for. Its reputation is excellent in the midwest and we have grads in Yale, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Boston University, etc....so I think u don't have to worry about its reputation anywhere. We got grads from coast to coast, whether u like snoop dogg or notorius...it dont matter. I am gettin interviews from all over the nation including Brown U., Wash U in St.Louis, and plenty of midwest programs(all allopathic, in case u care). Dont worry about what people say ...ask the 4th years and residents who graduated from NSU for the real advice. Email me if u have any questions...send me a private message and I'll give u my email. I have no regrets. And I got plenty of friends going into competitive specialties such as anesthesiology, ER, surgery, etc...who are getting interviews at top 5 allopathic residency programs. Good luck to all of you who come here!!!

Well, boys and girls, looks like I may be one of the latest additions to NSU. Jusst got that ubiquitous phone call from the adcom, congratulating me on getting in. Did any of you interview on the 7th?

Hey, congrats on getting thru your first semester of med school! Yeah, I'm really looking forward to next year: beautiful school, great program (worried about excruciating humidity though)! Do you have any impressions/ advice for first semester, or things that you learned that you found out were different than you expected in med school? despite what the class of 2009 says, biochem and histology are not easy classes (this year they made it more difficult, especially biochem) So take everything with a grain of salt, and try not to blow off any classes (easier said then done) As for anatomy, the notes they give you for class are not sufficient, alot of supplemental research and readings are needed for this class, and obviously a lot of lab time is needed to do well. My impressions is that the workload seemed good up until the middle of black october..where we had tests once a week and sometimes more then 1 test/week. Things would start to build up and you would only have a whole week to teach yourself the anatomy of the pelvis (not very easy).. And then there was a period of 1.5-2 weeks with no tests (thxgiving included) after black october and then right after that started the finals.. Finals were interesting to say the least, if you let your work build up you only have 1.5 days to teach yourself head/neck..almost impossible..and by the time the histo final rolled around (last test, 2 days after anatomy) we had to go thru 130+ pgs of notes + 2 hrs of DVD in 1.5 days..and this is after taking the physio final (not cumulative) and gross final (head/neck) IN THE SAME WEEK

Strongest advice: Keep up with EVERY class

Do you know why they changed the material? What kind of things are different? More pathways? Structures? Reaction mechanisms? Details of slides?

So take everything with a grain of salt, and try not to blow off any classes (easier said then done)

If you miss a class, do you miss out on important material? I understood that everything is included in the class notes that are handed out. How many classes did you miss? Do you think cashing in on the whole 30% of classes you are allowed to miss is a bad idea?

As for anatomy, the notes they give you for class are not sufficient, alot of supplemental research and readings are needed for this class, and obviously a lot of lab time is needed to do well.

That is a very short amount of time to start and learn that much new material! Especially right after two exams! Especially all in the same week!!

I'm sure that this harried existence is par for the course in med school, but its helpful to get an idea perhaps on where to focus your time regarding certain aspects of coursework.

alright classmates, I have a stupid financial aid question.

By when do we need to apply for loans? and when do we fill out a fafsa form? In short, is there anything i should be doing now to get my tuition money?

Here's some clarification:

for Biochem: the material itself that was taught was unchanged, but the tests were much harder than previous years. i was told by an M1 rep that it was because the profs were mad at the M1s for skipping too much (hehe)

As for skipping class: Me personally, i maybe skipped 20% of class (of course that will differ from wats on record =) ) And im doing fine. I do recommend that you copy down notes from someone else if u skip anatomy, all the other classes should be ok

Anatomy: The supplemental stuff is all on you! i'll suggest a book list later that will definately help you guys provided you use them.

Regarding the scheduling: The finals schedule was actually good it begain with some easy stuff (OPP and CP) then got into the hard stuff (physio, anatomy) and the ended on something relatively easy (histo) I thought the schedule was awesome actually during the year, pretty much every other friday afternoon off get out of class at 3...OH and i forgot biochem..you take your biochem final b4 thxgiving!! so you already get that out of the way and no more biochem for the rest of the semester

Typical day for me: go to class at 8, leave class at 3 go home putz around for an hour or 2..try to fit a couple hours of studying b4 dinner, then just study till 10-11 ...putz around some more till bedtime..(usually 1230) then wake up at 730 for skoo..but you have to realize..if there isnt a test..i just do lounge studying..you know the stress free type of studying..so its not bad at all.

Regarding retention: i do not know as of now, but i feel like right now im not retaining as much as i should. But i think this is something universal at all med schools...you get a rush of info and dont really have time to sit down and absorb it all. I plan on catching up this summer...and of course board studying time so i wouldnt worry about this issue...you'll learn it eventually

The fun times: pretty much right after a test!! except for finals week and pictures are posted on facebook! Actually sometimes me and my friends skip class to go to the beach randomly..you need little breaks here and there to keep yourself sane. Like go to beachplace and eat lunch there they have an AMAZING view of the beach/ocean..since its on the 3rd floor

I remember when i was in your exact position...afraid on how willl i handle everything and if i have time to have fun...and TRUST me..if you are feeling this way..you will definately make it!! its not that bad...just do a little every night and spread the work load so by black october/finals week you wont be stressin ...

I'm going to be down in Ft. Lauderdale January 25th-28th for a second look and actually looking for housing. It's more than likely that I'll need roommates.

I'm a current OMS-1 at NSU and I just wanted to say congrats to everyone that's been accepted so far! I think NSU is pretty awesome, and some of the others have pretty much covered alot about what our first semester has been like. I'm excited to see y'all come in August.

It's funny you should ask that, i'm a little worried about it myself. When I got the e-mail invite for interview, they said an interview packet will be mailed to me. I never got it. I e-mailed vicky about it just a few days before the interview. She told me she mailed it again, and I STILL didn't get it.

Naturally, I'm a little worried if the acceptance letter will make it's way to toronto (here's to hoping it does). In any case, I got her to confirm my acceptance via e-mail, so that I have at least something in writing, and I can decline other acceptances with confidence.

I've been a good little housing gunner and started calling some places. Nearly all of them said that 2 months out is when to get your name on a waiting list. So to move in for July, you put your name down in May. One place (Nova Park I think) put my name down on the pre-waitlist waitlist.

Maybe I should engage in typical gunner fashion and start to buy out all of the apts near the school! (muah! - I wish I was that rich :( )

One month in Emergency Medicine, and
Five months of electives
-or-

There is also a vacation month and two additional weeks prior to senior seminar week. You may only do two electives in the same discipline.

Note: Two different subspecialties are not considered the same discipline.

However, students may opt to do an elective during their vacation. In that case, the student may choose any discipline/subspeciatly.

Yes. As you can see from where students obtain residency positions (Yale, Johns Hopkins), they rotate at those hospitals during their MS4 year.

Yes. You would have to coordinate that with the hospitals there. There is a bunch of calling, paperwork, and what not that is involved. However, if you want to do it, it can be done. You may not get your first choice, but it has and can be done.

A solid foundation in these areas is essential for becoming a physician. Fourth year is for electives in sub-specialties. What you probably don't understand is that if you want to be a cardiologist for example, you don't apply to a cardiology residency--you apply to an internal medicine program. You can still do a 4th year elective (anywhere in the country) in cardiology and that will help you in applying for an internal medicine position at that program. After you complete the typically 4 year internal medicine residency, you then apply for a cardiology fellowship.

That said, students at NSU are assigned to a wide variety of rotations depending on your core campus (be it Broward General or Mount Sinai, etc.). I know of some students who have worked with nephrologists or pulmonologists for one of their internal medicine months. For surgery some have been with plastic, cardiothoracic, and hand surgeons. It is all random in these assignments, but no matter where you are assigned you will still be expect to learn everything about that particular core specialty.

Hey everyone -

Could anyone tell me about the IGC preceptorship? Are they assigned for you or do you get to pick?

I saw that the 2006-2007 schedule indicated that for IGC preceptorships, there are X and Y groups with various numbers afterwards. Is an X2 group different from an X3 group or is there only an X and Y group?

IGC is like where you shadow docs .there are only 2 groups X and Y..you get to choose between family med, internal med, peds...Or you can do something called COM2Serve...this is where you go to various places to shadow..so u get to work with different docs..not the same one every other week. Also for COM2Serve health fairs and various camps count as credit..so its more flexible..the only downside of Com2serve is that some places are really far away..like 1.5 hrs away..i did the regular IGC..and i thought it was alright.

Yes. I got a "bill," but it just noted that I had a credit from my deposit. You can also check on it if you have you NSU ID.

Well, unless you're interested in the military scholarships, you don't need the acceptance package for information about housing or financial aid. If you think you're eligible for financial aid, fill out a FAFSA. Housing is on you. You're responsible for finding your own. The NOVA website can help you out on this. The acceptance package does have the website that allows you to set up your email though, but you can do that on your own through the website if you have your NSU ID number. It's the same number that your application was filed as.

I just got mine last week. There isn't any information about financial aid or housing in it, but there are important deadlines for the deposits in the acceptance letterand a form you must turn in to hold you seat in the class .

No problem! I've already started looking for apartments and condos and I plan to have a couple of roommates. I've made appointments to check out places when I'm down in Florida next week.

I know that many people have complained about NSU's below par administrative skills, but they seem to provide you more information than other schools do. I know that some schools that don't provide their student with an email address. At least with NSU, you get an email and ID so you can access information on webct. You have access to course sign-up, financial aid information, and can see your account balance. I'll be checking that when I put in my second deposit.

I will tell UNE after my trip to NSU.

FAFSA has become more comprehensive since I first started filling them out. If you have a tax return from last year (1040, W2, etc), then it'll be easier because they refer to specific line items. Be sure to retrieve this current year's instructions since the line items may have changed.

The Financial Aid office may have their own form to fill out for internal scholarships. If so, they will be mailing it out in the next coming months.

If you're looking for scholarships, your best bet is external scholarships. It requires work, but hey, it's free money!

Not to start looking to get a general sense of prices, availability, neighborhoods, distance from school, moving costs, etc. I don't know nearly as much as I need to know about this process, so I've been scouting potential rentals online for about two weeks, trying to figure out all the stuff I'll need to know when I get serious about signing a lease in a few months. I figure I'll have to fly down and hopefully line up a bunch of places to check out. I do foresee much pain in the hiney.

yeah that area has lots of spots that are pristine and charge a lot. try to broaden your search. My friend lives in delray beach and it's cheaper and not to far.

The closer you are to the school, the more you'll pay. The closer you are to the beach, the more expensive it is. Remember to factor in traffic! I've seen one bedroom apartments/condos starting in the 800s. Keep searching. Mind you that some places aren't furnished and/or do not include utilities.

yeah that area has lots of spots that are pristine and charge a lot. try to broaden your search. My friend lives in delray beach and it's cheaper and not to far.

'Not too far' as in walking distance? For me, since I don't have a car (and don't want to buy one), paying more for a place close by would be a better idea then getting a cheaper place farther away, since whatever costs you cut in rent would be offset by transportation costs.

DelRay is a 35 min. drive without traffic. With traffic in the morning you might as well sleep in the library.

I fired off a bunch of transcripts to NSUCOM last week and went to the admissions website to see if my transcripts have been received. When I logged in with my ID and pwd under Admissions (not my NSU ID + PIN), it now looks like I am applying for the first time. Does everyone else's look like that too?

First let me congratulate you on being accepted to NSU-COM Class of 2011!!!

I am a 4th year DO student who is graduating in May, yippee!!! but
that leaves me needing to sell my house :(. It is 2 bedrooms, 1 bath,
1 car garage, with a newly finished enclosed patio/florida room. It
has a beautiful canal in the back yard, in a family freindly
neighborhood, about 5 miles from the school.

Have any of you guys been able to register for an NSU email account yet? I kept trying to register, but always got an error message saying I haven't been registered yet, or something to that effect. I called tech support, and they say it's still too early for me to sign up for an account.

It's not too early to sign up for an account since many people have already. I supposed you followed the link that's on the facebook group. If you need help, holla.

Try using your NSU ID. It should start with an N followed by 000 and additional numbers. When you submitted your secondary application, you should have gotten an email back as confirmation. One of those emails, it lists your NSU ID number. Use that instead of your SS# and let me know how that turns out. If you tried the NSU ID number, try the SS#. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll get to the bottom of this.

2. Yes. u can do it pretty a rural rotation pretty much anywhere in the world... u just have to get approval from nsu...
