EM seems to be a great field, except for the fact that it is shift work. I have been told that there is a great deal of "burn out".

Any comments on this?

Are there any good options out there wherein one can do residency in EM, but be able to practice another field as well? For example, one option is to do EM and also Family. Then, when one gets older and burn out kicks in, he/she can just practice family. The downside is that EM is a 3 year residency as is family--> 6 years is quite a long time to invest just to back up the possibility of burning out.

I am an MS-I and I'm strongly considering EM. I am aware of this possibility of burnout, but just to let you know...there are residency programs which are joint Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine/Family Practice. It only adds 1 year...so these residencies are 4 years, not 6. Something to think about I guess....

I think there are EM/peds and EM/IM but these are 5 years, not 4. There are EM/FP but only in DO these days I think?

What is this EM/Peds all about? Can one work in an adult ER with this training or only peds ER? Also, does this allow one to practice pediatrics once burn out kicks in?

How about subspecialties in ER (ex. sports med) does this allow for further proctice in a non-ER setting if burn out kicks in? :p

Sports Medicine is a title that only FP physicians can actually legally use, because they are the only specialty that have this area as a fellowship. No other specialties are eligible to call themselves Sports Medicine trained, not even Orthos.

There are plenty of Ortho SportsMed fellowships!!!
