I also got the call on the 15th and am probably going as well. I'd say I'm about 95% sure I'll be in Newark next year. Yay for finding out so soon where we'll be going!
zimmie256 10-19-2006, 06:07 AM Just wanted to say hi guys! I got my call the 16th and was flipping out on the 15th... I interviewed on the same day as DF38, and I thought I was toast when the phone didn't ring... Haha.
Anyway, not sure where I'll be next year yet... But I'm very excited about NJMS, so we'll see what happens. Lots of factors to consider I guess.

How do you know when it is already? But yes, I definitely plan on going.
And I just need to say that I  NJMS for letting us know so quickly!
m0nkeymanxx 10-19-2006, 10:31 AM I know its early but by any chance does anyone know of any new condos or aparmetns in newark? I will most likely will buy a place instead of renting.
Crazy4F1 10-19-2006, 11:42 AM if you're going to buy someplace, i wouldnt suggest newark. try bloomfield, its pretty close and a lot of 1st/2nd years i know got houses out there. its a much nicer/safer area.
i was accepted to njms and rwj - how did you guys make the choice for njms? i'm leaning towards rwj right now but trying to make sure i make the 100% right decision for me.

I heard they were building really nice apartments somewhere in newark... maybe i was wrong..
How far is bloomfield from the hospital?

Found this on the housing section of the website: http://www.umdnj.edu/home2web/housing/index.htm Not sure if that's what you're referring to.

I don't think you can buy these apartments...
Can you????

Can you????
No I don't think so... But are there other new apartments?? Haha... Sorry to confuse the issue...
Crazy4F1 10-19-2006, 01:34 PM there are new apartments at the school itself, but theyre a rent/room&board type thing rather than buying.
bloomfield is right next to belleville which is right next to newark...i'm not sure how far it would be driving time in the morning. maybe 20 mins - half hour?

I'm accepted to both too, but I'm almost positive I'm going to NJMS. For me, it was a gut feeling thing. Also, I don't like how RWJ has the split campus thing, and how the basic sciences are in Piscataway while the main hospital is in New Brunswick. I know they're very close, but it still seems like it could get a little annoying. And there were lots of other little things - I liked the student lounge in NJMS, like the courtyard there, really just the general atmosphere.
hopster 10-20-2006, 04:33 AM Bear in mind that I am not accepted (or interviewed for that matter) at RWJ, but I take classes on Busch Campus which is right next door to the Med school. I can honestly say that I dont think I have ever seen a happy RWJ student walking around. I see them in the library and they all look miserable, and in the med school cafeteria they all seem very standoffish. Overall, I cant put my finger on it, but I get a bad vibe from them. At NJMS on the other hand, there were students coming up to me before I even got to the admissions office giving me tips and asking how I was doing. It seemed like people really loved the school. Not to mention the great curriculum they have set up there. That alone makes NJMS my number one choice. Even if I got accepted to Dartmouth or Columbia tomorrow (which I am fairly sure I wont), they would have a hard time convincing me not to go to NJMS.
I am SURE that there are people who have had the opposite experience, but this is just my personal oberervation so take it with a grain of salt.

That's interesting, Hopster... thanks for your perspective. When I was at RWJ, I got a similar vibe. But because I was there during exam week for the first years, I attributed it to stress right before an exam, and pretty much wrote it off... However, if that's not just during exam week, then yikes!
Crazy4F1 10-20-2006, 09:17 AM interesting. i'd never heard that before, but i had heard people say that the njms students are much more laid back. when i was at both schools the students were exceptionally friendly and enthusiastic though. this might turn out to be a really hard decision.
m0nkeymanxx 10-21-2006, 07:36 AM Random question. But does anyone know if they record their lectures? I swear i heard them say they do but my friend who also interviewed there says that they don't

I asked when I interviewed, and they do record their lectures... Maybe it's just audio and not video?
Caristra 10-21-2006, 05:00 PM Hey Class of 2011!
I'm not sure yet if I willl be joining you, I got my MD acceptance but my PHD status is still undecided and I am waiting on that, plus several other schools, before I make a final decision. But I thought I'd drop in and give a shout out and a congrats to my fellow accepted applicants. :)
ChuckRock 10-22-2006, 09:23 AM I asked when I interviewed, and they do record their lectures... Maybe it's just audio and not video?
They record audio.
Congrats!
Queenie84 10-23-2006, 07:54 AM Hello fellow class of 2011'ers!
I found out I got into NJMS on October 15th (that day I called out from work, and found myself intently watching Flavor of Love and pretending I wasn't thinking about THE phone call, lol)
I got into RWJ as well, but I'm about 96% sure that I'm going to NJMS. Sooo glad we found out sooner, cause I'm leaving the country in a week!
Congrats to all!
Ohhh, any former Rutgers students??
m0nkeymanxx 10-25-2006, 05:48 AM I know its pretty early but i was wondering if someone currently attending NJMS could help about financial aid. From reading last years posts, rent can go from anywhere from 600 to 1600. It seems the financial aid package covers about 1100 max. How do the people paying 1600 manage? Private loans? Jobs? Parents?

I wonder if some of the higher end rents are people with families where maybe their spouse is still working... But who knows?
ASDIC 10-25-2006, 04:06 PM I am a first year at NJMS living in the brand new dorms. The financial aid office is very helpful and very generous in terms of giving out loans. The subsidized and unsubsidized loans are very limited, so if you want money they will hook u up with high interest private loans (but you do not hafta pay the interest while in school unlike some of the other private loans)
You will spend an entire day during orientation during the first year how the financial aid process works
good luck ;-)

What do you think of the dorms? I'm leaning toward living there next year because it would be so convenient and I think it would be better to look for an apartment for second year when I have a better "lay of the land", so to speak. Are they nice? Do you like it?
ASDIC 10-25-2006, 08:09 PM The dorms are awesome. Contrast this: you have a class at 9 AM, you get to wake up at 8:50 and walk to class while other commuters have to wake up earlier than that and be stuck in traffic.
Also the apartments come fully furnished with a bed, desk, tv stand, drawer, coffee table, and living room furniture. They also throw in a fridge, microwave and dishwasher. You are provided with free internet, free basic cable, and free water. You only pay for power. The AC and heater suck up a lotta power tho! There is also 24/7 security. Theres also a study room on the 8th floor and every floor has a laundry room. Theres also a bus stop right next to the building and buses go straight to Newark Penn Station.
Despite the price, I think its worth living here and I like it.

How much does it cost to live in the dorms? I was considering living in newport....

I think they hover around $1k a month. Does anyone know if first years get preferential choice for the dorms?? I think it would be great to live on campus for at least the first year.
WestinRome 10-26-2006, 08:31 PM Hey yall, I'm brand new in this SDN thing, but I'm excited to say I'm also part of class of 2011. Glad it's all over with. NJMS was my number one choice, so it's a big relief for me!!!
Anyhow regarding the dorms, UMDNJ has this great website where it shows everything including the rates for the apartments (see below) and yes I do believe they give preference to first year students.

Congrats, and thanks for the great link! Wish they had a few more pictures (especially of the apartments), but I'm pretty sure I want to live there next year.
ASDIC 10-27-2006, 12:15 AM the first years are guaranteed housing...in fact 100 of the 170 first years currently live in the dorms

Question about the dorms - I know they're supposed to have a gym, but reading through last year's class thread it sounded like that wouldn't be finished until much later. Is it complete, or if not when is it supposed to be complete?
ASDIC 11-01-2006, 08:36 AM The gym at the dorms isnt complete yet, nor is the proposed cafe. I was told they may open next semester.

Question for my fellow future NJMS'ers: when you sent in your deposit, did you get any sort of email or confirmation that they received it? I want to make sure that they did in fact get my paperwork saying I want to go there - it would suck to have that get lost in the mail :scared:
Maybe I'll just call them to check.

m0nkeymanxx 11-06-2006, 08:15 AM does anyone know if njms has any intramural sports... =P
I just called the admissions office, and they said they received my stuff on 10/31. So I'm guessing they don't send any sort of email confirmation that they got it.
And I have no clue if they have intramural sports, but I hope so! If not, maybe we can start some.
ASDIC 11-06-2006, 12:10 PM does anyone know if njms has any intramural sports... =P
The first year class has formed flag football teams and they have played some fun games. Last week we had a ping pong tournament. The 2nd years have their own basketball teams. There are also people who have joined sports clubs outside of the school.
m0nkeymanxx 11-06-2006, 02:38 PM who do they play against.....
ASDIC 11-06-2006, 10:11 PM who do they play against.....
The intramural teams are formed from the 1st year and 2nd year classes, so we play against each other. The first year class has 5 flag football teams.
hopster 11-07-2006, 03:26 AM Does anyone know about the PDA requirement?? I am hoping to knock it out as a X-mas gift this year but need to know what kind is required. Any insights??
ASDIC 11-07-2006, 08:13 PM yes...a PDA is required during the first year for the Physician's Core class...if you are getting it as a gift, I would strongly suggest u get it.
hopster 11-08-2006, 04:04 AM yes...a PDA is required during the first year for the Physician's Core class...if you are getting it as a gift, I would strongly suggest u get it.
Do you know which kind is required? Would a Dell Axim suffice? Is there any one at NJMS I can contact about this?
Thanks.
m0nkeymanxx 11-08-2006, 06:30 AM hey hopster if you find out any information can you share with all of us. I would really like to know. I'm also considering asking for a palm treo for my b-day
hopster 11-08-2006, 07:50 AM Found this on the NJMS website:
http://njms.umdnj.edu/tss/pda.cfm
Seems to list all compatible PDAs. The only thing that I am worried about is buying one now and having it be completely outdated by the time 3rd year rolls around. Oh well, the joys of exponential technological advances.
Ugh, I was hoping to avoid buying a PDA until third year, since I'm sure whatever I get now will be outdated by then. Oh well, Christmas is a good idea.
pri101 11-08-2006, 09:44 PM i have two sony clie palm PDAs that i want to sell... PM me for details
pizan0 11-10-2006, 05:44 AM I've officially graduated into the allopathic thread (way too long being pre-med, haha)

osin83 11-10-2006, 03:24 PM I'll see everyone in the fall!! Actually our orientation starts August 10th, so see you in the summer!!!
pizan0 11-13-2006, 07:46 AM Hey kids,
I'm 95% sure I'm living on campus, but I was wondering whether anyone had some info or opinions about how living in Newark is, in general. Now, I don't mean is it safe, is it scary, etc, because we all know that Newark is a big city that has its rough spots. But I think I'm referring more to the quality of student life in a city like Newark. Let's face it, its not New York, or Boston (I went to BU) - which are some amazing cities to go to school in for many reasons.
Any thoughts? Anyone speak to many NJMS students to get the feel for what I'm asking? Thanks!

ICCONFETTI 11-14-2006, 04:04 PM HEY GUYS!!!! I JUST GOT MY CALL FROM DR. H like 20 MINUTES AGO AND I AM STILL SO PSYCHED!
Not too sure yet if I will be attending but most likely (unless RWJ comes through, then i'll have a tough decision to make) I will.
YAY!!!!!!!! I really liked the place when I visited it and I think it's awesome how the medical school and the hospital are directly linked.
ARGH I"M SO HAPPY!

I think I'll be living in the new apartment building as well! Niiice. Its funny because after getting accepted, I can't stop thinking about just starting med school! But, its 9 months away, so I need to just sit back and enjoy whatever time I have left before it begins.
Are you guys all going to the Accepted Students Luncheon on Jan. 5th? Do they discuss housing there? Or is it just a meet and greet?

I'll be there as well. I'm hoping for some more information (I wonder if we could ask to check out the dorms?), but if it's just a meet and greet that's cool too.
As for clothes, no idea. I'm thinking maybe nice pants and a sweater?

From reading the thread from last year it looks like business casual. For a dude that means like khakis and a buttondown/polo. For a chick, no clue.
PS. Rafael Greenblatt says hi (this will make no sense if you are not who i think you are)

Timmythemic22 11-27-2006, 05:07 PM Shot in the dark, but any of you guys surf?
Hoping for someone to head down the shore after a particularly brutal exam!
WestinRome 11-27-2006, 07:30 PM I got my phonecall about five minutes after I finished my dessert. My whole family was staring at me while i was trying no to yell into the phone! so excited for next year... pretty sure i will go to njms, it is by far my favorite school. does anyone know how the dorms work as far as roomates? i'm assuming they are all same sex dorms for students only? see you all at the luncheon (i am planning on feeling very sick that morning so i can save vaca days)
Congrats Sunny ... I as well am planning of acquiring a horrible cough/cold that day and call it a sick day  (I hope my boss doesn't show up sick at UMD, seeing how I work right close to Newark!)

I don't, but if you can teach me I'll be happy to join you! (I've always thought surfing looks like fun, but where does one learn to surf in Jersey?)

You can do anything in Jersey....anything. We've got it all
Esteban24 11-28-2006, 07:16 AM Congrats to everybody who got accepted. I heard back in September and am looking forward to meeting you guys.
Esteban24 11-28-2006, 07:28 AM I've talked to a couple of the students at NJMS and a popular place to live is Hoboken. It's relatively close to Newark and the city and has a pretty active night life (not that we'll have that much time to take advantage of it). In terms of rent it's pretty expensive but so are the prices for the new dorms at NJMS (the rent for the dorms and Hoboken would be about the same).
I lived in Newark last year and it's not a great place to live. The only advantage would be that its really close to school so you wouldn't have to worry about commuting. I've also been told that parking in the garage next to the dorm is really expensive so keep that in mind. It's definitely nothing like Boston in regards to being a student city (I'm in boston now) and the only place to go out to in Newark would be the Ironbound district, which has some restaurants and a few bars.
hope this helps...
Timmythemic22 11-28-2006, 08:47 AM Believe me, Hoboken is a great choice if you can afford it. However, with the cost of everything else for med school along with the fact that we really won't have time to enjoy the sights of Hoboken, it's not really worth it. I live about 10 min away from there right now, and it is a great place (not worth 2000/mo for 1 br studio, though). I'm actually somewhat looking forward to dorming it up again.:D
WestinRome 11-28-2006, 09:21 PM Believe me when I tell you the prices for the dorms and the parking are way cheaper at the school than they would be in Hoboken.
To begin with if you attempt to park anywhere in Hoboken after 5 pm you will NOT find parking...this is guaranteed. 800 dollars which is what I believe UMD charges for a year of parking is not bad, it comes to about 65/month...Currently I live 5 minutes from Hoboken (one town over) and I pay 80/month for a spot. The rents in Hoboken are also outrageous and it is definitely not worth dealing with the rent and the impossible parking situation and then have to worry about making it to med school. Plus, to make it back to Hoboken from Newark, you'd have to deal with Lincoln Tunnel traffic, which is impossible on occassions too. I dealt with it all too well during my undergrad years and it's not fun. I have never lived in Newark, but I did my undergrad there and it's not so bad.
As for night life, if you want it, don't look for it in Newark. NYC is a couple of minutes away and so is Hoboken, both of which are no more than about 15 miles and easily accessible via subway.
UDbiochem 11-29-2006, 06:06 AM I'm a current 2nd year at NJMS... congrats to you all!
It is 150 for the year I believe to park on campus. Everyone has to pay this, it's just the general parking fee. It doesn't cost anymore to live in the dorms, the general parking is the same parking that you park in as a resident.
I live in the dorms now and I am thoroughly pleased with them. A little pricey but safe and new and student-friendly. No landlords, no cable/internet bill, and I walk to school. It is definitely cheaper than Hoboken, not even close, especially if you live in a double or triple.
ICCONFETTI 11-29-2006, 08:26 AM Does anyone know the preferences that first years get in terms of picking the types of rooms? I know they get preference and are guaranteed for housing, but what about getting specific types of rooms? (ie. studio, 1 bed room, etc).
In case my question doesn't make sense... here is another way to put it.
Do the majority of first years live in 2bed room, 3 bed room apartments, or do they get to live in 1bed room/studio if they choose to?
UDbiochem 11-29-2006, 08:40 AM First years get first pick. This year almost all the first years took all the singles... and the smaller double apartments. However, there was plenty of room this year, and over half of the first year class lives here as well as many of the dental students too. And only 4 out of the 8 floors were actually opened for this year (construction was still going on.) I'm guessing next year they'll open up the rest of the floors and there will be even more room.
I live in a sweet bigger double with a good friend of mine (we're both 2nd years) and I know a first year down the hall with a triple all to himself. There are plenty of rooms. I'd say if you're a first year and submit your app on housing day in june, you'll get your pick of room. (I wanted a smaller double but I'm a 2nd year and didn't get my first preference.)

Hey, thanks for all the info! I was wondering if you happened to know when the gym was going to be done?
UDbiochem 11-29-2006, 03:19 PM Hey, thanks for all the info! I was wondering if you happened to know when the gym was going to be done?
No idea... it was promised for this year but no luck so far. A lot of folks use the Rutgers gym which isn't too far away for a discounted price. I hope it will be up soon....

Thanks for all the info UDbiochem! Its nice to hear from someone already there. I have a quick question. You mention that most first years this year took all the singles. Would you recommend getting a single room the first year? Do you think it still allows for a nice, social environment?
Thanks

I recommend against a single actually (I'm not a first year however, and I'm a somewhat social person.) I think that living in a double or triple would be better, just because you'd get to know some people from your class very well. Med school really does consist of very little free time outside of studying, and I'm all about the more social you can be, the better. Plus the singles are more expensive. (The prices are on the housing website.)
I have friends in singles however who like them a lot. They're a nice size, I just know I'd be lonely.
drguy22 12-01-2006, 09:30 PM Hey Guys...congrats....havents Posted Here Much...
Im A Second Year....if Ya Got Questions..u Can Ask Away...
Aite..back To Studyin....
Congrats Again!!! Welcome To Njms...:)
WestinRome 12-02-2006, 07:52 PM Hey guys anyone know when the actual applications for housing become available? I'm under the impression it's sometime after April, but I'm not sure exactly when. I have a lease to renew by next May and I'd like to know if I get my first choice room, or if I should renew...and also anyone know how fast the school gets back to us with an answer after the actual application?
*sunny* 12-03-2006, 05:51 PM Do you think they allow pets in the dorm? I have a bird...a parrot. He is sort of little but he has a "big" attitude and can get a little noisy every once in awhile. i'm not suggesting i want to sneak him in... i just think this might be a problem. i emailed them and have no response so far.
ASDIC 12-03-2006, 07:28 PM They accepted applications this year in late April-early May, and housing assignments were sent out late June-mid July. Just wait for housing day for more details, which will be sometime in March.
No pets allowed in the dorms.
elboludo 12-04-2006, 11:13 AM As a first year, I have found there to be absolutely no need for the "mandatory" PDA. I know some students that bought one and find it handy, but it is by no means necessary. Other students bought one and have yet to use it. Its just a matter of preference. By second or third year, though, I've heard that a PDA may become much more useful.
UDbiochem 12-04-2006, 11:55 AM A PDA is required for class in 2nd year. We actually have a few exams where we are required to use it during the exam to look stuff up. No joke... so you won't necessarily use it first year, but you will be required to buy one 2nd year.
osin83 12-04-2006, 12:07 PM Believe me, Hoboken is awesome, I went to 4 years of college there (Stevens). I'm in Boston now doing my master's and it's awesome here. If youre expecting Newark to be anything like either of those cities, you are sadly mistaken. But, like people have stated, other than somtimes on the weekends, you will not have time to enjoy living in Hoboken. Especially your 1st and 2nd years.
I live 2 towns over from Newark, in a nice suburb, but will not be living home during medical school (my house can get pretty crazy somtimes). Plus I know from friends who attended rutgers; commuting to/from newark is no fun, even from only 2 towns over.
I definitely reccomend the apts on campus for your first year (that's where I'll be) and if possible second year too. Group study and library hours are much easier to make work when you're that close. The commute from hoboken by subway looks something like this:
Path Train #1 ~ 8 mins
Transfer ~ 1-7 mins
Path Train #2 ~ 20 mins
NJMS Shuttle ~ 15 mins
So the commute is going to take 45mins-1hr. Having a car in hoboken is noooooo fun. Commuting from hoboken is noooooo fun either but apparently people do it. I love it there, but its not the easiest thing to make work IMO during med school. Comparing the rent for the on campus housing, a 1BR on campus is slightly more expensive to a few hundred bucks cheaper than the rent each person would pay for a DECENT 2-3 bedroom place. I have several friends currently living in hoboken. The cheapest any of them pay is $800/month plus utilities for a s#@!hole apartment (not counting parking). When it comes to rent in Hoboken, the sky's the limit. But again, Hoboken is MUCH nicer/safer than any part of Newark (especially at night),but you can always just pop over on the subway if you want to go out in Hoboken. But there is a huge difference in cost.
osin83 12-04-2006, 02:50 PM Do they assign roomates at random for the on campus apartments?
ASDIC 12-04-2006, 04:03 PM Yes, you can choose ur own roomate or have them select for u
m0nkeymanxx 12-04-2006, 05:40 PM I know it's a little early but i wanted to know how many books your carry around to school. It's because i wanted to buy a bookbag at an outlet store that i'm going to this weekend. I'm most likely going to be living off campus. Do people bring laptops to class?
osin83 12-04-2006, 06:39 PM first off, youre definitely not going to need to drag all of your books with you everywhere you go. Most people dont even buy most of the text books. In medical school, most people use text books as references more than anything. If youre on campus, u can easily use the texts in the library if needed. So, I definitely wouldnt base your bookbag purchase on that.:D
People do bring laptops to class, but it is by nooooooo means necessary.
m0nkeymanxx 12-04-2006, 09:35 PM so then what do you bring to class? just a notebook? my northface bookbag is tiny....
Cmercury1 12-05-2006, 08:57 AM For the current med students out there, is group studying very helpful or typical? I'm more of an independent worker, and am thinking about living at home (only 15 minutes away, no rent to pay :o ). However, I would consider living in the dorms if there's activity at night that makes staying on campus more convenient (though I can't imagine anything besides studying). :p
ASDIC 12-05-2006, 09:17 AM I live in the dorms, and I study alone...but there are folks who do group studying in the medical school building which is next door. However ppl do have their own little parties in their apartments (post exam celebrations, birthdays etc).
It really depends on your style, I feel studying with other ppl distracts me and doesnt really help me.
Timmythemic22 12-05-2006, 04:51 PM Needs serious bumpage.
Timmythemic22 12-06-2006, 09:55 AM Sigh...bump bump.
osin83 12-06-2006, 08:56 PM I'm taking a few medical school courses right now (medical biochemistry, medical physiology) and it definitely helps to study with groups... of course if you dont do any studying on your own, group study is not nearly as helpful, and can at times be distracting, but as long as everyone in the group does some work on their own as well, group studying is great...
Cmercury1 what town you live in? My home address is also only about 10-15 mins from the med school
m0nkeymanxx 12-07-2006, 10:26 AM ok..... so... the only thing you guys bring to class is a notebook? I know that some schools give you a binder fulls of notes.
anyone!?!?!?
Timmythemic22 12-07-2006, 02:12 PM Can't speak for NJMS policy, BUT I took M1 classes at Georgetown as part of their postbacc program... we had two copies of notes for each lecture (previous years notes provided before class, and new notes of the current lecture a few days after class) I would usually bring a notebook and a copy of the old notes for class (or a syllabus and old notes) and annotate one of those. I never brought books to class, outside of lab.
ASDIC 12-07-2006, 03:00 PM the first MGM class gives u a huge binder full of notes...its like 4 inches thick...with 4 slides on each page double sided...speaking of which i must go back to those now

same here
m0nkeymanxx 12-08-2006, 07:28 AM anyone here snowboard? season's starting.. it would be pretty cool to have some people to go boarding with on the weekends during school.

HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL YEA!!! I'm headin out to Lake Tahoe for a week over winter break, winter breaks are like a week long in med school so I gotta cherish this last long trip for a long while... Plus my friends are all close by the med school and they go all the time

Timmythemic22 12-11-2006, 10:25 AM This thread has definitely been helpful. I'm not going to worry about picking up a palm pilot for M1 then. (Mayble I can get a flat-screen this year instead - OOOOOH)
I know we have so much time to think about this still, but I'm completely undecided about choice of room type in the dorms. It would be really nice to have a roomate in the sense of knowing someone right off the bat, but I am kinda the 'classic' only child, in being very used to my complete privacy. Tough decision.
Plus, to any lurking M2's...if we want to bring our own bed, will they take out the one that's in the apartment?
ASDIC 12-11-2006, 01:02 PM no u cannot bring ur own furniture...as per the rooms, they have singles, studios, doubles and triples...so it shudnt be bad to pick one
*sunny* 12-11-2006, 03:31 PM Any NJMS students know of pet friendly housing in the area? I have a bird... and am looking to rent, or possibly buy (and then rent out) a condo/apt. i am not leaving my little guy at home with my parents like i had to do with my other bird. he is coming to med school with me to be my 'lil study buddy. thanks for any sugestions
Esteban24 12-12-2006, 08:11 AM Hi, can anyone post information regarding the lunch for admitted students that NJMS is having. I heard it mentioned on the this thread before but I haven't received any info about it in the mail and they didn't respond to my request over email.
Thanks

I also haven't heard anything of it, and i was probably one of the first accepted since I did Early Decision. I tried to find it on their website but have come up empty so far... how did everyone else find out?
it also could have been some info in the mail, in which case I wouldn't have seen yet since I'm away at school...
On another note... okay, there was senioritis in high school, once again in college, and now that I have my acceptance to med school, you have no idea how hard it is to focus on my master's classes and finals... THIS SUXXX!!!

The only information I received was an invitation to the lunch (that came with my acceptance package.) The only info on it was the date & time, January 5th, 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm I believe.
Timmythemic22 12-12-2006, 11:05 AM no u cannot bring ur own furniture...as per the rooms, they have singles, studios, doubles and triples...so it shudnt be bad to pick one
Booo to no new furniture, I was hoping to purchase my first big-boy bed (finally a bit past the futon). Oh well, as long as it's comfortable. I assume bed will be the one sanctuary I'll have next year.
Oh, is anyone else having issues with their acceptance packet and deposit? I sent mine about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and it still hasn't been received. I'm kinda worried!
ICCONFETTI 12-12-2006, 01:11 PM i sent mine over thanksgiving, and they said they received it today. it took them awhile to get back to my email though...
in regards to the luncheon, haven't heard anything or received anything about it since the one liner in the acceptance package.
hydrogen3k 12-12-2006, 02:57 PM Hi All,
I'm in the 7 year program with NJMS and may enter the med. school next year. I still have to make a decision between a MD/PhD with Wash U in St. louis and a basic MD at NJMS. Well, if I choose to stay in the program, I am looking forward to meeting you guys.

I actually heard from them about a month or so after I sent in the packet. I received a letter from the admissions office as a receipt for the deposit, stating that they had received my money and that my spot was being held. Just give it sometime.
Cmercury1 12-12-2006, 09:33 PM I never got acknowledgement, but they did cash my check.
osin83 12-13-2006, 04:40 PM I just wanted to comment on how F'in great it is not having to deal with the BS of the admissions process any longer... I still have a few friends who are waiting to hear from school this cycle so, SUX FO THEM!!
WestinRome 12-13-2006, 08:23 PM Since I know some of you were wondering I figured I'd share. I just received in the mail today an invitation to the student luncheon on the 5th. It looks similar to what came in the acceptance packet but it has the location and and email address to RSVP
m0nkeymanxx 12-14-2006, 06:30 AM do we have to dress up for this thing?? i'll be so happy if i can just wear jeans and a sweatshirt
Anybody know when we'll get information on financial aid and also on immunizations? I'd like to start dealing with that stuff while I'm home over winter break...
Cmercury1 12-14-2006, 08:44 AM I was told on the phone that the financial aid stuff will come after New Year's.

pizan0 12-15-2006, 05:51 AM Hey guys,
I got another invite in the mail to the luncheon on January 5th, and I noticed that they changed the time of it. It begins at 12 pm and ends at 3 pm. Also, it says to meet in the lobby.
See you there!
osin83 12-15-2006, 11:30 AM Seeya there too!:D :D
DE12MD 12-15-2006, 01:19 PM ill be there too. too bad the invite didnt give us any info about a dress code...
ICCONFETTI 12-15-2006, 01:40 PM let's all go dressed as bunnies!
osin83 12-15-2006, 03:47 PM I dont know about bunnies but I would rock my banana costume from Halloween
WestinRome 12-15-2006, 08:49 PM how many students could have possibly been accepted by jan 5th? I wonder how many of us will be there?
WestinRome 12-15-2006, 08:58 PM OK guys, I know it sounds like Paranoia, BUT, is it safe to assume that once accepted, pretty much nothing can take that away from us? I have acceptance letters from other schools and I'd like to reply saying I don't want to go there, but I feel as if I need a backup just in case the impossible would happen at NJMS and suddenly in a near future the acceptance is not there anymore....but I also don't want to send these schools 100 dollar deposits if I have no intention of going there.
I don't know, I guess with all the "conditional acceptance" stuff I'm a bit insecure. I also have other interview offers that I dont want to go to (waste of money and time), but again I don't know if I should decline them.
NJMS is my first choice no matter what happens and safely assuming I havent killed anyone in my past and therefore my criminal record and background are clean, I don't see a reason why the acceptance offer would be pulled, but do any of you know any cases where the acceptance offer was pulled later in the process? Thnx guys, and oh yeah again please excuse the paranoia! :D

I think it would have to be something pretty bad for them to rescind the acceptance. If you're still in school, graduate with the degree you said you would and don't fail out. Outside of school, don't do something stupid like DUI, and I think you should be good.
For what it's worth, I declined my other acceptance.

Ha. Unfortunately, I share your paranoia my friend. I know I don't have any skeletons that would rescind an acceptance now, but you bet your ass I'm gonna be living like a saint until next august!
osin83 12-18-2006, 12:16 PM yea, I called and asked about the criminal background check since my history is FAR from squeaky clean... they send them out late march and results come back in april
Dr. MightyMouse 12-18-2006, 01:17 PM First off congrats too all those accepted and I look forward to seeing you all next year :)
On another note, does anyone know if the Newark Campus has WiFi?
ASDIC 12-20-2006, 08:57 PM The med school is completely wireless, but you will need to register your computer with the TSS office to get access. The dorms have ethernet jacks, however some ppl have got routers so they can use their laptops from the lounge, etc.
m0nkeymanxx 12-29-2006, 06:47 AM Serious bumpage... who's going to the lucheon
WestinRome 12-29-2006, 08:29 AM I'll be there on the 5th....anyone else got an invitation to the SNMA dinner dance at the Sheraton Hotel on the 14th? If so, anyone going?
DE12MD 12-29-2006, 10:07 AM I'll be there on the 5th....anyone else got an invitation to the SNMA dinner dance at the Sheraton Hotel on the 14th? If so, anyone going?
Whats SNMA? I'll be there on the 5th as well - I asked about the dress code when I emailed my RSVP but they just said that more info would be sent to my home address, so I still have no idea about that.

Yea, whats SNMA? I too have been wondering when I will be getting the info in the mail about the luncheon. Will we be getting a parking pass?

OH YEAHHH i forgot that we will have to park there! yeah parking pass is prob vital unless we just go to that garage that people keep talking ab?
I'll be there. I won't be home until the 1st, so I hope the additional information will make it to my house, because my interview packet never got there.
WestinRome 12-31-2006, 07:46 AM I think SNMA stands for Student National Medical Association...I got an email invitation a couple of days ago....I also have not received anymore info on the luncheon
Timmythemic22 12-31-2006, 10:24 AM I'll be at the luncheon. See you all there!
osin83 12-31-2006, 11:59 AM I will be in tahoe still on the 15th so I can't make the dinner, but I will definitely be at the luncheon.. I recommend people jsut go to the hospital entrance and valet their cars ($7) since it costs the same as the garage and you dont have to drive around looking for spots....
ICCONFETTI 01-01-2007, 03:29 PM I'll be at the luncheon, and they said they would send additional info to the house, but haven't received any packet in the mail yet. Where are we supposed to go??
As for the dinner/dance at the Sheraton on the 14th, I'll be going back to school that morning, so I won't be making that!
see u there!

Neither did I... :(
osin83 01-01-2007, 10:43 PM yea well the dinner seems like its more geared towards current students anyways... i dont think i would enjoy it so im not really bummed i cant make it
Timmythemic22 01-02-2007, 08:18 AM As mentioned earlier...where are we parking for the friday luncheon? I misplace part of the information, I forget where we park and where to go to meet. Not an auspicious start on my part.

Just so you know, another accepted student I know inquired about how we should dress at the luncheon tomorrow, and he was told business casual.

Sweet that's what I planned!
Anyway, I'm really excited for this lunch thing tomorrow because I can't wait to meet the people who we might be speending the next 4 years with! Also I think they're going to give us free stuff! Like maybe a tshirt! woohoo!

gotgame83 01-05-2007, 01:02 PM mmmm that was good cake today (I was one of your tour guides) Hope everyone had a good time today and if there are any questions that you forgot to ask while you were there feel free to PM me.
Kind of a random question, but what kind of places to eat are there by the school? (And how are they?)
gotgame83 01-05-2007, 06:35 PM Kind of a random question, but what kind of places to eat are there by the school? (And how are they?)
In the school itself you have a half way decent cafe and then you have a burger king(so unhealthy however when you are studying really late, 4 of those cheeseburgers are sooo good lol) on campus. In the surrounding areas I wouldnt dine anywhere within a few blocks from the school unless you like fried chicken with everything(i kid you not, i think newark is the fried chicken, hair braiding capital of the world) however about a mile away you have the ironbound section of newark with great places to eat. I personally like montclair and bloomfield, and not too long ago I went out with my lab group to a greek place in edgewater which was 15minutes away. There are also some nice places in south orange to eat which is about 15minutes (because of traffic lights) west on south orange ave.
BTW I like the way you think, food quality will be one of my determining factors when i apply for a residency. I need a place that gives unlimited food to the docs..
ASDIC 01-05-2007, 10:49 PM there are some places across the dorms such as Quiznos, a chinese place and a pizza place...however I ate at the pizza place last week and i got nasty diarrhea
m0nkeymanxx 01-06-2007, 07:57 AM So I was told yesterday that it is convienent to bring a laptop to school. I'm just curious why. Unless it's a tablet I don't see that many pro's in bringing a laptop. The only reason why i ask is because i was planning on getting a macbook pro instead tablet pc. I personally like macs but if a tablet pc is more suited for school then i might get a tablet instead.
Thanks for any input.

I only bring my laptop with me when I am studying in groups because I have a lot of resources on my computer or yesterday when we had histolab because its all online now.
m0nkeymanxx 01-06-2007, 09:15 AM is it a tablet?
gotgame83 01-06-2007, 09:59 AM No, I only know 1 person who has a tablet. I use a dell latitude d820.
Oh yes, food is crucial :D
Another question - what stuff do we need for next year? I mean, from what I understand we're supposed to have PDA's, are they really necessary? What other stuff might we need to buy?

You dont really need too much. You do not need PDA's infact I dont think I know anyone who has one this year, although as MS2's I think they are trying to really require it. You need a decent stethoscope, but not really any other diagnostic equipment. When you go to your preceptors office they have everything you will need.
As for books. Wait, dont even think about buying anything now. Many of us will be selling our books very cheap (sorry my gf already claimed mine for next year). But you only need Moore clinical anatomy, netter, and I personally think BRS anatomy is very good to have. Another book which is not essential but I found very helpful was USMLE road map anatomy. For embryo the lecture notes are good enough to do well on the tests but I think High Yield embryo is a good choice. For MGM(biochem genetics) dont buy anything. Let me say that again. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY lippincotts unless you just like buying books. I did not buy this book and if I did want to use it i just went to the library. A book that many people found helpful was BRS biochem. But all the questions for the tests are taken from the lecture notes.
The last book which I think you should purchase during you first semester is First Aid for the USMLE. Its really good to use with your classes so that you can see what aspects of the course will be emphasized on the shelf and step 1. It will also be very helpful come time for your shelf exam.
All of this can be taken care of during the first few weeks of class so dont worry about anything until then.

Wow, thanks for taking the time to type all that up, it's very helpful!
Glad to hear all we really need is a stethoscope (at least until the fall rolls around and it's time to buy books)
menaniac 01-08-2007, 08:50 AM I specifically asked the MAc/PC question during the tour on the 5th, and was told mac/PC makes no difference...its all good. Since the entire campus is wireless, and a lot of classes/materials are online, it just makes sense to have some kind of laptop, whichever flavor you prefer.
menaniac 01-08-2007, 08:51 AM Thanks so much for the info...very VERY helpful! One less thing to stress about until the time comes!
SOMforme 01-08-2007, 06:36 PM Hi All!!!
It was great meeting many of you at the luncheon. The tour was pretty good. And I also got to see a cadaver for the first time:)
I'm not a 100% sure if I'm going to NJMS, but the in-state tuition seems pretty attractive.
Also, at the luncheon I met a few guys who were in some BA/MD program. They're going to be like 19 when entering the med. school. Isn't that sick?! Make's me feel old:(.
Well, I guess we may have quite a diverse class.
menaniac 01-11-2007, 07:18 AM Is there anyone else out there looking for an off-campus roomate? I know its a bit early, but its never too soon to start looking...
*sunny* 01-11-2007, 06:46 PM so i found it funny that they didn't mention another housing complex in newark that appears to be a bit cheaper. i talked to them today and it should be open in the summer. fully furnished etc. look here to see the listing on craigslist ad:
http://newjersey.craigslist.org/apa/260545450.html
osin83 01-15-2007, 07:32 AM that craigslist posting seems to be advertising a privately owned housing complex geared towards undergrads at NJIT and Rutgers.. it definitely is cheaper though... where did you find details about furniture, etc... did you email the poster?
menaniac 01-15-2007, 11:18 AM *sunny*, I saw in a previous posting that you were looking for a place that allows pets. So am i, and I have all the furniture one would need for a whole apt. PM me if you are interested in looking for a place that is "unfurnished", maybe we could save some $$$. :)
*sunny* 01-15-2007, 05:20 PM Our office is located at 105 Lock Street, Suite 407, in Newark. This is right across the street from the soccer field at NJIT. We can be reached at 973-504-8200.

m0nkeymanxx 01-16-2007, 07:02 AM how far is this from njms? is it nice? They really allow pets?
m0nkeymanxx 01-16-2007, 09:34 AM did anyone hear something about doing an elective in the ER during the first year? it was mentioned during one of the tours but i wasn't really pay attention. :P anyone know anything about this.
UDbiochem 01-16-2007, 09:45 AM The Emergency Medicine Interest Group organizes an elective that you can do any time during the first two years. It's a great experience by which you spend 6 four hour shifts in the ER shadowing an attending or resident. I'm a 2nd year and did it last semester.
I got to help intubate a patient, stitch up this guy's head which had a 5 inch laceration, try to resuscitate a patient, and got to observe all sorts of things like pelvic exams, putting in femoral lines, lumbar punctures, etc.... I highly recommend it. You'll see more in Newark than most other places that I can think of. It's especially great when you're thinking about EM, like I am. It has been one of the most eye-opening experiences that I've had in medicine so far.
If you attend NJMS in the fall, just keep your ears and eyes open for announcements for it. There will be advertisements from EMIG that will tell you how to get signed up and how to go about getting involved.

I'll add a clinical question too...
Do students take call? If you do, have you found it beneficial? (Not that anyone likes it, but do you think it's been worth it for residency-prep?)
ASDIC 01-17-2007, 10:03 PM for the clinical rotations...there are over a dozen hospitals across north jersey you will be sent too. there are still updating the list every year. most of the rotations are however done at UH here in newark.
from what i have heard from 3rd years...there is no call in psych and family medicine...all other rotations have call.
m0nkeymanxx 01-18-2007, 06:26 AM are they all driving distance? or do you end up temporarily moving there?
hydrogen3k 01-18-2007, 08:34 AM Does anyone know about how financial aid works? When do we apply, what forms we have to fill out, etc. ?
osin83 01-18-2007, 08:45 AM i know most of the hospitals where the rotati0ons are done... they are all pretty much in driving distance... morristown memorial and hackensack are a little bit of a drive but doable
menaniac 01-20-2007, 08:12 AM Does anyone know about how financial aid works? When do we apply, what forms we have to fill out, etc. ?
I met with the financial aid office on Jan. 5th, and they told me that it was kind of early to be worrying about aid, but they did direct me to their web-site. You can get to it through the UMDNJ site, look for financial aid. All the necessary forms are there. The first thing you have to do is file your taxes for 2006 and fill out the FASFA form on-line. They told me it is important to fill it out correctly the first time, as any mistakes will delay any financial aid decisions. After that, there are some school-specific forms to fill out. I haven't gotten to that part yet. I also asked them if they had a list of places where students have gotten outside sources of scholarships or funding, and they told me that they didn't keep any lists of that kind, and i'd have to do my own research about that. I've found a good on-line resource to be fastweb.com. Not much out there, though, I'm afraid!:o
Has anyone else found med-school friendly public scholarships?

I went there and the froms are still for 2006-2007 - I guess they haven't updated yet.
I've got another question for any of you current students. Do we need any specific type of stethoscope, or will any good model do? (I got one as a late Christmas present)

Yup, that's it. The link to the FASFA form brought me to the current rendition, which is all I've done so far. As I said, the financial aid office was pretty perplexed as to why I was worrying about this so early in the year. I guess that borowing thousands of dollars is no big deal for them...they see it every day. So its not too surprising to me, given their attitude, that the forms aren't updated. Bummer. Thanks for letting us know!

I think that's still better than Philly or Camden. They generally average about 1 per day! Look at the bright side...with all the violence in Newark, Oh, the things we'll see (and learn)!

very true...
osin83 01-23-2007, 02:53 PM growing up a short while away, and having some family that used to live in newark i've learned many great things newark has to offer... obviously every city has its dirty and dangerous parts (sadly newark has many of these) but as long as your willing, you can find some pretty awesome places to go and things to see as well...
m0nkeymanxx 01-23-2007, 06:12 PM is it dangerous from the school to the penn station. I may be commuting
ASDIC 01-23-2007, 07:37 PM any stethoscope is good...i personally use the Littman Cardiology III...and its an excellent stethoscope. Just dont get the crappy ones that sell for like 10 or 20 bucks.
Its not dangerous to go from the school to the penn station.
UDbiochem 01-24-2007, 05:10 AM There is a shuttle that runs from the station to school run by UMDNJ. I'm not sure if it runs on weekends or not but on weekday mornings and evenings it runs, so you can definitely commute.

Just to offer a frame of reference, Philly has had 28 murders so far this year, which is of course more than 1 per day.
osin83 01-26-2007, 03:34 PM Walking 15 minutes back from class when its 10 below zero in Boston is not cool... I'm definitely going to take advantage of the connected buildings from the dorm to class next year in weather like this
Timmythemic22 01-29-2007, 04:01 PM Hey All,
Not sure if you pre-M1's (like me) can help, but any lurking M1-M2's I was curious about access to the library. I have a couple days off from work, and I was going to head to campus tomorrow to talk with housing and finan aid people. As nerdy as it is, I also wanted to head to the library and maybe just play a little cursory catch-up with some anatomy material. Anyway, my questions are:
1. Will I get hasselled for being in the library when I don't yet have an student ID?
2. Can I get a copy of Netter's to read there, and where do I get it?
Thanks!

Answer to question #1
MAYBE. If you walk to the library from indoors already, dont look confused, and look like a student then they generally wont stop you. However, with that being said I still have been stopped on a few occasions but that was coming from outside.
2. There MIGHT be a copy of an OLD netters not behind the front desk but I am not sure. But for the most part they are kept behind the front desk for 4 hour loans which require an ID card.

m0nkeymanxx 02-01-2007, 07:46 AM after reading that thread in the allopathic forum i was just curious about what percentage of njms students attend classes.
Timmythemic22 02-06-2007, 07:22 AM Wow, this thread has died. What's up NJMS peeps, are you still excited?!
I just went on campus last week to pay my housing app fee and fill out my room application. How's everyone doing in the financial aid process? I'm waiting for the parents to finish their tax returns so I can finish FAFSA.
m0nkeymanxx 02-06-2007, 07:48 AM Do they need parents information?
menaniac 02-06-2007, 08:11 AM Do they need parents information?
It depends on how old you are, and what kind of financial aid you are applying for. Certain low-interest government loan programs for financially disadvantaged people require your parent's information no matter how old you are, or how long you have been financially independent. If you are just applying for regular student loans you have to be born after a certain cut-off date to not have to give your parent's information as well. I have a feeling that it is all spelled out on the financial aid web-site where it explains what the different pots of money are for, and what the criteria for receiving them are.
pizan0 02-06-2007, 08:31 AM Does anyone know the deal about requesting a roommate(s)? What I mean is, say you put someone's name down, but then they either don't attend NJMS or decide not to live in the NJMS apartments, what happens?

I just went on campus last week to pay my housing app fee and fill out my room application. How's everyone doing in the financial aid process? I'm waiting for the parents to finish their tax returns so I can finish FAFSA.
Esteban24 02-06-2007, 10:24 AM In case anyone was still interested in the housing complex near NJMS the website is below:
www.univcentre.com
If anyone gets a chance to stop by there I'd appreciate it if you could post your opinion of it. The rent is a little more than half of NJMS' for a two bedroom and they have a gym (along with a lot of amenities, which we probably won't have time to advantage of). Which leads me to another question. None of the tour guides at the lunch had any idea when NJMS was planning on building a gym, does anyone know if that's something that will be done by the time we start classes?
Thanks,
Timmythemic22 02-06-2007, 11:50 AM The pictures of that place look great (of course anyone can do a decent shop job to make it look purty). However, I just really like the idea of living on a campus again and maybe recapture a bit of the old college life since I communted 2.5 out of my four years.
pizan0 02-06-2007, 11:58 AM I do agree. The place does look really great, and the rates are very reasonable. But, how close is it the the campus? Would you walk that? Or would you have to pull a Michael Johnson across the Newark streets to get home?
Recapturing a bit of the old college life sounds good to me too!

It's not tooooooo far from campus... BUT, NO WAY would I want to walk there after a late night study session. Plus I'm sure there are going to be undergrad kids from rutgers, njit and maybe even ECC living there, and if so, it's definitely not going to be easy to study there with undergrad parties going on all the time. TRUST me, when it comes to Newark living, you don't want to go too cheap. Pay the extra and live in a safe place. There is a development right next to campus that lots of 2nd yr and up kids live on, i forget waht it was called, but email your tour guides and they will definitely know. They have parties there sometimes on weekends and after exams from what i hear if they dont go out to Hoboken or other places.
As far as gyms, they were supposed to be putting in one on one of the floors in the new dorm by this coming fall, but from what i gatherd from my tour guides, they might have scrapped the idea. They told me also that a few kids were signed up for the Rutgers gym which is not too far from campus.

The development right next to the campus is called "Society Hill," I believe. You may have a good point when you mention other undergrad students living in those new, off-campus apartments. And I do agree that one should pay the extra money to live in a safer environment.
With that said, does anyone feel that living in the new apartments on the campus will make you feel "trapped"? Its not as though Newark is the type of city where one can go take a stroll, you know? I guess I just want to get a sense of where most peeps are deciding to live at NJMS or in other towns...
osin83 02-07-2007, 09:38 AM I for one will without a doubt be living in the campus apts, even though I live in a town where it wouldnt be THAT bad to commute, but like some others, I commuted most of college, and its the worst. Plus getting to know some friends is easier when living on campus. Also, from my experience up here at BU Med, there are definitely going to be a decent amount of late night study sessions going on. I for one would not want to have to worry about walking 15-20 minutes through newark at night, or even drive home.
If any of you are going to be in the area a little early (June 8-10) definitely check out the Portugal Day Festival down Ferry St. I've been going probably since I was 16 or so. It's a great time, food, music, beer, sangria. There are also a bunch of other smaller festivals in Newark throughout the year. Like I've said before, Newark is a decent place if you know where youre going. If you like Spanish and/or Portuguese food, (both of which I love) you will be in heaven on Ferry St. and the whole surrounding area. You gotta make the best of where ever you end up. Could be a lot worse!!

I'm planning on living off campus somewhere close. I've got pets, and can't take them with me to the dorms. If anyone is cat-friendly and is looking for a roomie, PM me and let's talk!
Esteban24 02-08-2007, 10:18 AM The university center housing complex is only a few blocks from NJMS but I agree that it would be dangerous to walk back at night. And there might also be a problem living with undergrads. However, if enough NJMS students are interested we might be able to get our own quiet area, maybe even our own floor, since I'm sure other UMDNJ students (i.e. masters, dental, etc.) will be looking at it. Also UMDNJ has a CHEN shuttle that drives from NJMS to Rutgers, NJIT, and Penn station. If enough UMDNJ students show interest in moving in there we might be able to petition the administration to get the shuttle bus to stop by there (keep in mind the walk is only a few blocks).
I was looking forward to moving into the NJMS dorms but considering their cost and the fact that they aren't going to bother to build a gym, this other place might be a better idea. Not that I'm a hardcore gym nut, it just makes sense that the closer the gym is to you the better chance you have of sticking with it, especially during that stressful first semester of M1.
Any yeah, if you get a chance definitely check out the Portugese festival in the Ironbound, its a great time.
osin83 02-10-2007, 06:00 PM next time i go home from school ill check out those apts, it will probably be mid march tho... ill let you guys know if nobody has visited them by then.

Time is flying, but I must say, I wish I wasn't working from now until matriculation! Though the thought of having no money is not very comforting either. Anyone feeling the same way?
gotgame83 02-16-2007, 06:37 AM so i guess everyone goes to class
It varies. Anatomy doesnt have any lectures its all problem based learning and MGM (biochem genetics) you could and in my opinion should spend your time in the library reviewing slides, pathways and notes on your own because IMO it was more productive that way. I am currently taking ISF (physio and histo) This one is is a toss up so far. I have gone to a few lectures but didnt get much out of them however I know many people who go all the time. The only course that you CAN NOT miss because they take it TOO seriously is physicians core. Sure you can miss a few small lectures with that course but dont mess around, they will have no problems docking you points for leaving a lecture early, right asdic:D
All in all it is really up to you which is nice. If you choose not to go they have scribe notes, audio recordings and slides to assist you.

I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading that recent grads were carrying about $165,000 in debt just from med school. No word as to what the average incoming debt is.

From the financial, aid website, "The average cumulative debt for UMDNJ Medical and Dental School Classes of 2006 was between $101,637 and $134,545." This has probably a rough estimate, and has probably increased since the class of 2006.
Not sure if you've seen this, but its a good indication of how much you'll be spending/year at NJMS: http://www.umdnj.edu/studentfinancialaid/app_process/07/2006_07_Professional_School_Budgets_01.pdf
WestinRome 02-17-2007, 08:09 AM That's funny...when my family doctor asked me what med school was costing nowadays and I said about 150K, he almost passed out, adding that when he went to school it was 10K a year and he had about 40K of debt when he finished.... I WISH!

If you are planning on dorming they probably will require Meningitis vaccine. Hep B is definite must, it's a series of 3 shots. And as far as MMR booster and others, just get a titer test to see if you need it.

Even if someone recounted all 3-4 pages of immunization info that NJMS requires I'd still take their word with a grain of salt. They are (rightfully so) incredibly anal about immunizations. Odds are you'll need some random titer or some documentation from a vaccination that occurred decades ago. I would contact student health and get try to get the forms ahead of time if you haven't gotten them already. They require your doctor to fill in the vaccination info directly on their forms anyway, so it's better that you just get two birds with one stone and bring the stuff to your physical.

Timmythemic22 02-22-2007, 11:56 AM It depends on how old you are, and what kind of financial aid you are applying for.
Okay...I talked with Financial aid and they said I could personally use my parents income to qualify for loans as part of institutional aid.
HOWEVER, I am 24 and not listed as a dependent by either parent. Do I need to include my parent's income in my FAFSA?

I was told that including parental income would not affect my award. It could however open up a few other sources of funds. Who knows, I inlcuded it on my fafsa.

I've been told so many different things, its scary. From what I understand, if your parents don't make a LOT of money, then it won't hurt to put them on. Also, like hopster said, it can open up a few other sources of funds. Not sure if you've heard, but Bush is trying to cut a lot of the Title VII health education funds, and I was told by a fin aid rep at NJMS that we may not even have access to Perkins Loans, because that may be cut by the gov too. Great!!!!!!!!!
Another question - I'm trying to fill out the housing application, but they ask for a student ID. We don't have one yet, so what do we put there?

osin83 02-24-2007, 01:28 PM Dr. Heinrich told us about the Parent's Day back at the accepted student's luncheon. My mom is working at University Hospital taht day and is going to try to switch her schedule to make it, but my dad's goin.
menaniac 02-26-2007, 11:28 AM FYI everyone... I just got off the phone with the admissions office, asking about the immunization thing. They told me that there will be a package of matriculation information sent out this week or early next, part of which will be the forms to fill out for what shots you'll need. Some of them have to be returned before April 27th, so it might be a good idea to make appointments with your doctor for the end of March- mid April. :)

I had the same concerns as you. Unfortunately I think we do have to report it regardless. The following is copy/pasted from the FAFSA Help section:
Health Profession students must provide parents' information. Although your parents' information is required on your application, your parents' signature is not required.
If you do not know whether your course of study is a health profession program, contact the schools financial aid office

I called the financial aid office a few times, and they said that they do not require parental information. If you do not include it in your FAFSA, you may be disqualified from need-based aid, but if your parents aren't poor, you are disqualified anyway. I chose not to include it.

I pretty much heard the same thing, but my original question to the office really wasn't answered: at what point does putting your parents income information hurt you? Will it hurt your financial aid package if you put them on and you are not considered to be in need? What is the cut-off?

Okay, I've got a pretty unique (possibly stupid) question for all you current NJMS students.
I'm a hard core New Jersey Devils fan, and starting next year they will be playing in Newark (convenient!). I would love to get season tickets, but I'm worried if I will have the time. Obviously I've heard a ton about how much work med school is, so I was just wondering if you guys think season tickets could be feasible. FYI, that would be 41 games from October through April.
Absolutely impossible? Possible, depending on my work habits? Not a problem?

The cheapest will be $10 per seat, so $410 for the season. Pretty good, if you ask me. If you want to see the arena layout and all the different pricing levels, there's a thread (http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=340039&page=3) on a hockey message board where someone scanned in all the info from the brochure the season ticket holders just got. Looks like it will be sweet!

I'm a huge devils fan myself. I think that an occasional game is definitely feasible, but to go to every game during first year is expecting a lot.

It's nice to know there's more Devils fans out here - since I go to school in Virginia I don't see too many other fans.
Do you think it would be possible for me to go to, say, 20 games (or more)? If so, I might just get season tickets and sell the ones I can't go to.

I'd definitely recommend any parents who are reading this to go. :)

You know, I thought about something kind of funny yesterday. On Parent's Day, since they are giving tours, are they going to show our parents the gross anatomy lab? haha, because if they did, I think my parents might faint.

The tour is the same tour the students get pretty much. The anatomy lab is included but those who don't want to go in don't have to. It is a student-run tour where the parents can ask all the questions they have of student volunteers.

menaniac 03-09-2007, 07:40 AM From what I understand, you are only allowed to borrow from the government up to the ammount that is published as the "cost of attending" for your particular school (it varies from school to school, and from year to year). Thus, the maximum ammount you could borrow as a 1st year at UMDNJ is in the neighborhood of $40K. That is assuming that you'd qualify to borrow the maximum. There are also exceptions to this for things like childcare expenses and stuff, but you have to write a letter requesting more, and the reasons for it.
I'm not sure about the rules for private lenders.
hydrogen3k 03-09-2007, 09:27 AM And today begins my last "real" Spring Break :( I will enjoy it while it lasts.

Say it ain't so.
What's your status NJMS people? I still haven't finished FAFSA. :(
m0nkeymanxx 03-15-2007, 09:41 AM for those of you whose parents went to parents day, was it worth it?
If my parents want to attend they have to cut their vacation short. They were going to drive up friday night but with this crazy weather they're going to have to drive up now in order to avoid the storm.
should i tell them not to bother?

I just finished mine today. I'm now way bummy. My "Expected Family Contribution" is WAY more money than I can afford (no other "family" to help me out...just little ole me). I hope I can get some private loans to cover the difference...or maybe some school-based aid. I'm not holding my breath for that, though. From what I understand that's few and far between, and I'm not much of a minority! :o Hopefully I'll be able to scrape enough together when the time comes for the basic necessities! Anyone looking for a roomie? I promise not to bounce the rent check!:)

I don't think it will be that big of an event. The entering class is still not fully decided.... I think the only thing I'm going "try" to bother my parents about is the White Coat ceremony and graduation
hydrogen3k 03-16-2007, 04:07 PM On that, is the event still on for tomorrow? - the weather's not the best.
