Does anyone have info. regarding Memorial's interview practices and acceptance rates for U.S. applicants? I have seen the website, but I still feel in the dark.

I interviewed at Memorial last month. I was attracted by the small size (the class is only about 60). The faculty there were very friendly- one professor saw a few of us waiting for our interviews and took us for a tour. The hospital is the tertiary care center for the entire province, but the population of the province is only around 500,000. Students seemed quite happy with the school but I won't go there. I'm interested in neurology and I don't think I would get to see many different kinds of cases there. Also, residencies for some specialties are quite competitive and the school is too young to have much of a reputation (plus, I've been told that Americans who attend Canadian schools are considered independent applicants in the residency process and this is a major disadvantage). It sounds like it's quite good if you're interested in primary care but it's pretty expensive too- tuition is $30,000 canadian and aid is loans-only. It seems like admissions is about as competitive as most state schools; I was wait-listed there (pending graduation) and accepted at Medical College of Ohio, University of Cincinnati, and Case Western. Before applying, carefully consider how you feel about the location. St. John's is about 100,000 people but it is closer to Dublin than to Montreal and that is the nearest city that's any larger. St. John's is a college town but there's no big city near by to escape to.

MU od NF is aexcellnt choice for anyone who wants to learn rural medicine--medicine that goes beyond learning which specialist to which you should refer your patient. The school is quite on the forefront of such training in Canada, and is known elsewhere inthe world for this as well. The context is quite excellent for such training.

Thank you for your replies. I applied to Memorial University early, but I still haven't received a response. My credentials aren't great. I have a 22Q MCAT score, 2.9 cumulative g.p.a., a Masters Degree in Education, 4 yrs. teaching experience, a little volunteer experience outside the school system, and decent references. I was just taking a stab in the dark. Can I assume, since I have yet to receive word regarding my application, that the answer is no. By the way, I am applying from the U.S.

Memorial University is located in one of the friendliest cities in Canada. Still what's important is being a doctor. I really don't care where I get accepted. But I'll be posting my own problem soon.
