I am currently applying for civilian residency starting in 2008. I will be on my way to IRAQ during the actual MATCH. My medical school has already contact the NRMP on my behalf, but it was not helpful. Has anyone been in a similiar situation and what worked or didn't for matching and/or scramble?

Well I went outside of the match and appied directly to the programs. I got back and had missed the jan deadline. That worked out great for me but not all programs willing. What are you going into?

Other than interviews are their other roadblocks to applying for the match from a remote location? It is all done online right? What specific roadblocks are you running into?

I was deployed on match day. My medical school ran interference for me and called me in Sicily with the news. Make sure the people at your med school have at least one phone number and email address where they can reach you. Good luck.

Are you going to be gone during the interview season, or just match day?

I knew one person who was deployed during the interview season. He had no trouble - when his interview offers came in, he called the programs, explained that he was deployed, and arranged to do interviews over the phone. One program declined to conduct the interview over the phone, but he said the others were very accommodating. This was for gen surg. His numbers were stellar, so that probably smoothed things for him too. In the end he matched and never spent a dime traveling for interviews. After crying over my credit card bill, I was jealous.

Interviews are not the problem. I don't leave for pre-deployment training until the end of January. My concern is I will be on my way or just arriving to IRAQ on MATCH day. I don't know what communication ability I willl have during that time. I am more worried about the possibility of having to scramble and not being able to.

I found a cell phone with voicemail that I can use while overseas or on my way there. Hopefully, it will all work out.
