A website run by Peter Leon Quinn, described in Britain as a phony character is selling fake degrees and A Level results for a mere 165 pounds (2.6 million cedis). The forged qualifications range from medical and law degrees to masters in English. The Guardian which investigated and published the story on Monday July 5 registered two of its reporters, who within a week obtained a medical degree from Oxford University and a bachelor of arts from the University of Strathclyde. Within a few days the certificates arrived with forged signatures, watermarks and stamps copied from the originals. The Guardian quoted authorities of the two universities as saying the "forgeries were worryingly authentic." The Liverpool based man who is nicknamed "the magician', because of his dexterity in the forgery business has been the subject of various injunctions and has been questioned by the police on several occasions and released, according to the Guardian. The Guardian reported that the production of false school results is not illegal in the UK and although the forgery of degrees is against the law the process of bringing culprits like Quinn to book has proved prohibitively lengthy and expensive for the Universities. The inability of the law to deal with Quinn has left Trading Standards officials and university authorities frustrated that he continues to sell fake degrees to customers all over the world. "We have no idea how many people do buy these certificates and use them but it must be significant because people don't put money into business if they aren't going to earn money", Guardian quoted Stuart Pudney of North Yorkshire County Council's trading standards department. In 2000 a survey of 1500 top British companies by the global information solutions found that 49% were concerned about applicants lying about their qualifications. Andy Davidson of the Institute of Employment Studies told the Guardian that fake degrees thriving because many employers did not check their authenticity with the various universities that were supposed to have issued them. The onus is on employers to always cross check with universities. The question is how many Ghanaians and Africans may have fallen prey to Quinn's scams? ochem chidi n 10-07-2004, 08:40 PM hi guys out there, please come to my aid, i'm currently a 300l biochemistry udergraduate student of Delta State University Abraka Nigeria, but i need financial support to have my second degree in medicine and surgery either in USA or Uk pls help me. pls u can reach out to me via my mail add. below my E-mail add. is kingschidi2004@yahoo.com Lucyojayme 10-09-2004, 08:42 AM hi guys out there, please come to my aid, i'm currently a 300l biochemistry udergraduate student of Delta State University Abraka Nigeria, but i need financial support to have my second degree in medicine and surgery either in USA or Uk pls help me. pls u can reach out to me via my mail add. below my E-mail add. is kingschidi2004@yahoo.com hi chidi, i suppose biochemistry is a four year course at Delsu. Why must you go to the UK or the US before studying Med. But if you insist,You could try Liverpool University's website in the uk.I think they have a scholarship programme. Don't you have Medicine and surgery at Delsu? I still think it is better to study Med in Nig. since you do not have anybody over there. It might be a little strenous starting life again. Best of luck though. : :o sequel to ur comment, i agree with u that studing medicine in uk or USA might be strenous but i think that is the right place to have quality education. faculty of medicine in Delta state university has not been accredited and as such, one cannot be allowed to write MBBS examination.moreover medicine today has gone molecular (genetic) . before one can be fully grouded in medicine one need to know more about molecular medicine. and the equipment to archive that is not available in Nigeria, and i want to do exp[loit in medical profession . this is the reason i need to study medicine in a developed country. thanks. pls do help me to achieve this dream. cos i want o transform the medical profession for good health. thanks ochem chidi kenniemd 02-10-2005, 10:28 AM sequel to ur comment, i agree with u that studing medicine in uk or USA might be strenous but i think that is the right place to have quality education. faculty of medicine in Delta state university has not been accredited and as such, one cannot be allowed to write MBBS examination.moreover medicine today has gone molecular (genetic) . before one can be fully grouded in medicine one need to know more about molecular medicine. and the equipment to archive that is not available in Nigeria, and i want to do exp[loit in medical profession . this is the reason i need to study medicine in a developed country. thanks. pls do help me to achieve this dream. cos i want o transform the medical profession for good health. thanks ochem chidi Hi, After being here for what seems like forever, it seems pretty refreshing to hear the words DELSU. I grew up in Benin and went to Uniben for a year. However, attending med sch. in America might be tricky. First if you are not a Citizen or don't have a green card, most schools won't look at your application. The ones that do might want you to have some money in escrow (like Johns hopkins = $175,000). It is a very expensive undertaking, but if I were to do it over again, I would do med. in Nigeria, tough as it might be, and then take the USMLE exams and apply for a residency in the US. I'm not too sure about the procedure in the UK, but basically you have to have a lot, I really mean a lot of dough before you can become a doctor in the US. I have been there and done that so I'm talking from experience. I hope everything goes well for you. ochem chidi n 02-14-2005, 08:21 AM this is to acknowlegde the receipt of ur coment and advice, pls i would want to know if there are other alternatives, as in studing any medical related course and latter medicine. pls do reply me with the neccessary information thanks ochem chidi bushbaby100 02-14-2005, 09:37 AM Hey guys, I am a qualified pharmacist in the UK relocating to the states soon wondered if there were any qualified nigerian pharmacists willing to share their experiences..... kenniemd 02-14-2005, 09:33 PM this is to acknowlegde the receipt of ur coment and advice, pls i would want to know if there are other alternatives, as in studing any medical related course and latter medicine. pls do reply me with the neccessary information thanks ochem chidi It all depends on your status (i.e citizen, green card etc). If not, you better have a lot of $$$ regardless of what you want to do. There are a few schools that give foreign students scholarships. Here in Maryland, Morgan state University does help a lot. It also depends on if you already have a bachelor's degree. Most schools offer PhD. programs in the sciences with free tuition and a generous stipend. Also, you can do nursing, get a green card and then go to med. school. Everything basically boils down to your status and your pocket. Do a google search for their site. Last time i checked(about 3 yrs ago) they offered a MBBS PhD program which takes about 7-8yrs. I think its possible to get a scholarship from them, but the catch is you have to work in Singapore for a few years(5 if im not mistaken) to pay back the expenses incurred in training you. Talk about a wonderful experience, I now know whatever I do, I cant be in the OR 24/7, it was cool, we did surgeries:most hernias(some bilateral), fibroids, hysterectomies, tumors(knee), optho stuff (eye cataracts), gave away free medication, saw patients, had to counsel those who test positive for HIV. Pretty much same deal as the one I talked about that I went on last yr, if you do a search on it. BTW, is anyone going to be at the SNMA conf in St Louis this week/weekend, holla at me if you will. My credentials are good aside from my low mcats and I have applied 2x and all the schools complain about the same thing low mcats(23). I previously had low science gpa of 2.9 but I did advanced postbac courses in bio and got practically a perfect 4.0 science gpa but none of which was biochem (would taking this help). I currently still waiting on hu med and meharry and really not sure what to do any more. I will be going on a med mission this summer to Ghana and have decided that I might continue working in public health (I have a master's in ph) in either naija or ghana possibly on contract till january during which i will not work at all to study for the 4 months as well as maybe take biochem at umdcp if i do not take in ghana this year(should i definitely take the biochem in states of does it not matter where i take it). What do you think? Do you think these two measures (taking biochem and not working and studying for the mcat) would help me get over the hump and do you have any suggestions please in as to how I should tackle this issue in the event that i do not get in hu or meharry? However, as someone that got in after applying 2x with the same low MCAT 25, I think its about making the rest of your application very strong. I completely redid my PS, did a clinical research internship, in the process got nice letters of rec from the physicians I worked with and applied very early the second time and i think it made a huge difference. Keep calling Howard and Meharry, hopefully, you'll get good news soon. I can begin pursuing a solid career placement, as opposed to taking up to 2 yrs in MPH program..turning down job opportunities because i have 2 do med school....applying for med school...doing 4yrs at med school, 2 yrs residency, etc. This is my thinking...u feel me? What do u think? epidamu 05-14-2005, 11:41 AM Makes sense allodoc.... too late i imagine though. I've been accepted to one post bac already and solidified my spot in the program. I didnt start looking seriously into MPH programs until recently, and am leary of the run around to get recs and such. What do u think? Oluchi. Base on your stat, you made a right decision to go for post-bac. I don't know how long is the program but let say, it is one year. You can take one year to do MPH while in med school. So you will have both post-bac and MPH in 2 years. But if you choose MPH before med school, it will also take you 2 years. Plus the post-bac will help you in your first 2 years of med school. Just do very well in the post-bac and bust the MCAT, and you will be more than fine. Make sure you mention about why you did the post-bac in your statement. Trust me it will help. Good luck. allodoc 05-14-2005, 06:47 PM Makes sense allodoc.... too late i imagine though. What do u think? hi oluchi, let me just say that i don't know that much about post bacc programs, so my idea about them may be wrong. regardless, having to re-do science courses when you've already done them does not serve any purpose (in my mind). even a gpa of 3.0 does not warrant a post bacc, but if that's what admissions committees are looking for, then by all means, that's what needs to be done. i agree with doing a joint md/mph program and you can always do it in 4yrs (depending on which med school you go to). other than my reason above, i recommended the mph because if you are going to wait a year, you might as well do something that would be worthwhile. when you're done with an mph, you can work. you can't do that with a post bacc. however, in light of the stats and all, it makes sense to do a post bacc. don't worry, i wasn't knocking your decision, i was only trying to give another view. allodoc 05-14-2005, 06:50 PM nice to have you in here. so you have cleared the MLE stuff. where did you match? hey obasanjo, are you a resident? yes, i've got all those pesky exams out of the way. actually, i still have step 3 to go. some (crazy) people have recommended taking it before intern year, but i definitely will not be doing that. i'll be starting medicine at bu. it's a daunting thought to finally be the intern, but i'm very excited. obasanjo 05-14-2005, 07:37 PM hey obasanjo, are you a resident? yes, i've got all those pesky exams out of the way. actually, i still have step 3 to go. some (crazy) people have recommended taking it before intern year, but i definitely will not be doing that. i'll be starting medicine at bu. it's a daunting thought to finally be the intern, but i'm very excited. hey allodoc, where/what is bu? anywhere congrats on completing step 1 and 2. that is great accomplishment  i hope say you make big party +pity+ . are you IMG or AMG? i am not yet a resident, still battling with step 2. (already cleared step1)hope to match for 2006. in which state are you? New york? man, keep in touch........ Drlander76 05-15-2005, 05:20 PM hi all bros, i know i am still totler compering to many med students in here. i am still struggling with my MCAT and pre-med journey. this august will be my first time taking the test. any feed back would be nice. nne97080 05-16-2005, 10:14 AM nne you be my sista? Yes o. nne97080 05-16-2005, 10:16 AM hey there, i just wanted to add my 2 cents. if i were you, i'd go for the mph and forget about the postbacc. unless you're an english, psych, music, history or some other non-science major, a post bacc does nothing for you. an mph complements an md degree and looks better on your cv. a postbacc looks more like a remedial course. and if need be, you can actually use an mph degree. but that's just my opinion. Totally agree. I think it helped my med school apps. nne97080 05-16-2005, 10:37 AM Makes sense allodoc.... too late i imagine though. What do u think? Well, after learning about your stats, I think you are right about the postbac except I have not done one so I cannot advice you on it. However, this is what I did because I had to deal with raising my mcat and my sci gpa. While doing my MPH I took advanced sci classes along with my mph classes. I also took classes during a winter semesters during the second year of my mph (yeah some schools have it. its 6weeks long) just to prepare for the mcat in april. The winter semester courses I think impressed schools especially since they were advanced science courses which are rigorous especially for the 6 weeks depending on how cool your job is. After the classes, I studied for the mcat on my own but for you since you would need a dramatic jump you should try doing Kaplan or princeton review and study with berkley review on your own along with exam kracker (both are great), and trust me your scores will go up. I really worked for it. I am sure you can do it and once it pays off you will appreciate it. kytrona 05-16-2005, 09:26 PM Hi guys, I'm so glad to have found this site! I'm from Ghana, currently pre-med in the US.
