Thanks cpw 05-16-2001, 08:55 AM for the most part.. if you're competitive (have at least a 3.3 and a 330 OAT) you'll get in SOMEWHERE. I didn't get into my first choice school (berkeley) but their average is WAY higher acceptance scores that almost any other OD school. ( 3.6 GPA and 360 OAT) Berkeley also only accepts 60 students. I made it to the interview round with berkeley. I was accepted at the other two schools I applied to (SCCO and UHCO) I'm going to UHCO in the fall. For the most part.. applications to OD school are falling right now.. but you still have to be competitive. As long as you're competitive on GPA and OAT with good experiences you'll do fine! Good luck ! puffy1 05-16-2001, 09:22 AM Also, ace the interview. If you come across as not being sincere in your desire to be an optometrist, they'll show you door. cpw 05-16-2001, 09:44 AM also a good point, puffy1. i'm naturally extroverted (as pointed out by one of my UHCO interviewers) but if you're not.. you need to work at coming across as a people person. You also, like puffy1 said, need to show genuine interest in the profession. Definitely don't go in there and say "well, i didn't get into med school... so.. here I am " Popoy 05-24-2001, 06:45 PM You gotta show what you want or else you won't get what you want.... Sell yourself in the interview. eyeguy 06-14-2001, 09:15 PM The degree of competitiveness depends a lot on the school. Obviously smaller schools tend to be more competitive. Grades really count (at least at UAB) because everyone else around you has a 3.5 or above. The entering gpa at uab for optometry is higher than the entering gpa for the med school next door if that tells you anything. A good interview goes a long way too. Good recommendations and experience also weigh pretty heavily. But..above all others...gpa counts!. eyeguy drbizzaro 07-30-2005, 07:41 PM How competitive are optometry schools.
