I'll start

Pros:
1. university program with fellowships
2. 3 hospital network=alot of exposure to all types of patients
3. excellent ancilliary staff, you never have to draw blood or do ABG's
4. alot of elective time during your first year
5. Barely breaks 70 hrs a week
6. Has a decent reputation around the country if ur looking for a working contract.
7. Syracuse is a very affordable place to live and has a beautiful scenery

Cons:
1. it snows alot in Syracuse
2. not a research-crazy institution...
3. Cards and GI is very competitive there...as is everywhere else
4. Majority of residents are FMG's...not many categorical AMG's, but it's US IMG friendly..they love SGU students and students from Ross.
5. Program director isnt known to go out of his way to get you into another fellowship...unless he really likes you and ur a superb resident....but at the same time if ur such a great resident..they rather keep u than lose u to another institution.

SUNY Upstate is a diamond in the rough. And oh yes, the weather DOES get pretty rough in Upstate New York. This is an excellent clinical program with outstanding faculty and residents. It is true that research is not the focus at this institution. Nevertheless, there are world-class researchers in cardiology (Jose Jalife, basic-science cardiac EP) and oncology (Bernie Poiesz, basic science oncology). The program touts a 100% board pass rate for the last five years, giving more credence to the clinical strength of the program. Syracuse is a very affordable place to live with nice houses in the $100K to $150K range in good school districts. If you prefer to rent, there are two apartment buildings downtown that are within walking distance.

The call schedule is as follows

Q3 until 9PM at UH
Q4 until 9PM at the VA
Q3 overnight in the ICU.

FOR SOME REASON AT THE INTERVIEW IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED....MAYBE I WASN'T PAYING ATTENTION OR THEY LEFT IT OUT ON PURPOSE....FOR A PLACE THAT RESIDENTS SAY YOU BARELY BREAK 70 HRS...THAT'S A BUSY CALL SCHEDULE
