I took a year off between medical school and residency and I'm starting to worry about internship. What should I read that will help me with patient management and the protocol for patient admissions, discharge summaries, etc.

A nice specific book that states diagnoses and then tests to order, treatment, follow up plans et would be best.

What did you carry with you that was most helpful on internal medicine and in the ER?

I want to find something to read now during my off time. I know threads have been posted in the past and leisure/fun reading material has been posted. I'm just looking for books that will help me excel (or survive atleast) in my ER and internal medicine months.

Thanks

Hey,

I really like the 5 minutes medical consult. It is very organized and to the point. It is better than other books in terms of concise pathophysiology review. It also has an excellent PDA version by Skyscape.

The other book I have been using is the Washington manual of medical therapeutics. Again an excellent PDA version by skyscape.

BTW the skyscape programs are all in the same format and extremely user friendly.

If you read any of these books cover to cover it should certainly suffice.

Harrison's pocket book is nice, but lacking in practicalities.
