What do people think about University of Maryland vs. George Washington University for IM?

I did a search, and it seems that no one seems much impressed by DC programs, but if you had to choose one, GWU would be the best bet. I was really impressed by my interview day, the PD, and their "philosophy," but it sounds like there are problems with ancillary staff and that it might possibly be malignant.

No one's really said much recently about Maryland. I actually was not as impressed with it. It does have a beautiful hospital and some great new research buildings around. Also, I know several people who have interviewed there and said that it was great -- similar to my home program at Temple (at which I've had the best experiences), but in a nicer setting.

Both programs' match lists showed heavy fellowship placement at their own institutions. I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

Anyway, if anyone can give me some inside info on their experience with either of the two programs it would be great. Thanks.

What do people think about University of Maryland vs. George Washington University for IM?I know both programs well. They are both solid programs with excellent PD's and high pass rates on ABIM. Neither program is malignant. GW has q5 call on medicine services with no overnight responsibilities, while Maryland has q4 call with overnight responsibilities on Fri and Sat. GW is a smaller program with about 60 residents, while Maryland is larger with about 100 residents. Which program do you feel would give you the best chance of getting into your fellowship of choice? PM me if you have specific questions about either program.

Maryland is ranked higher than GW mostly because of it's research and NIH funding. If you want a more laid back and less academic place, then do GW.

speaking as a GW resident, it most definately isn't malignant. There are pluses and minuses to the program (as there would be with any), but I chose this program because of its friendliness, so if we be slandered, let it be for appropriate reasons.

(not that i feel anyone is slandering so far though)
