I was accepted today. I interviewed Jan 29 2007.
GPA.. 3.8 overall
Some pharmacy experience (volunteered at a hospital clinic 100 hours or so, worked at a pharmacological lab 200 hours or so)

Sorry I'm a newbie at this, am I missing anything else you're looking for?

I went to UCSD. I'm graduating this June hopefully, haha.
I will have a BS in Human Biology.

The acceptance was 2 sheets of paper mailed in a business envelope.

Aahaha I actually thought my interview was kinda cheesy.

I was lucky to have 1 interviewer. He was suuuper nice and when I finished he told me my application was real strong, so actually I think the acceptance had more to do with my application than with my interview.

Haha.. For me, it's about having worked hard and deserving something as great as UCSF vs going to the school I've grown to love these past few years. It's a difficult decision, but not so difficult that it stresses me out.

Congrats, jindopowa and futuredruggist!

I received my letter of acceptance yesterday. The letter was also dated Feb. the 20th.

UCSD is my top choice, however, do you have any suggestions for making a choice between UCSD, Albany, and OSU?

Best wishes for all those who are eagerly awaiting for their letters.

Well I'll answer them for you since I was as curious as you are so I looked up their previous posts and found that futuredruggist interviewed on 1/27 and PharmPassion was on 2/10. Now these interview dates are really all over the place. I don't know what to expect any more. I always thought that after my interview, no news would have been good news but guess not! Congrats Guys. I got my acceptance letter too. I came into this wanting to only go to UCSF, but now things are so different now. UCSD really impressed me with their philosophy and potential for growth. So many of their graduates move on to residencies as well. If you guys get into both, which one are you leaning more towards?

I talked to someone on the admission committee.. She said that they make up a list ranking people according to best overall score (interview + application and everything else), and send letters to the top scoring individuals after everyone has been scored. Then after those people reply, they send out more letters based on how many people have rejected. I think UCSF has the same system. I do know that they share their lists..

I agree, don't worry about the dates.

I might be like 2% worried.

I don't think you should be worried.. UCSD's undergrad is pretty prestigious, and the grad schools are among the nation's best. Those two aspects alone give reason enough, or at least for me, to believe SSPPS will not only become accredited, but become reputable as well!

Grads of candidate schools have the same rights as accred school grads, so why worry? The school is new, the only thing stopping it from getting accred is time, by the time we get out it'll be one of the top schools in the US.

At the same time, I heard that graduates don't actually receive their Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The students actually working right now (most of them are in residency programs) are working as pharmacists, but they aren't getting paid as pharmacists. Rather, they're getting paid as grad interns or something like that since they don't technically have their degree. Can anyone confirm or correct me?

But at the same time, they will 99.99% be fully accredited by the time 2011 hits.

As prestigious as UCSD is, I don't know if I want to go there. The interviewers impressed me, but having been in the UC system, I don't know if I want to go through it all again, especially with the costs rising again. Not to mention, the students I met there told me about the heavy science class overload (which is non-impressive to me). Not to mention you don't get pharmacy experience until your 4th year? Is that right?

So I don't feel so worried about not being accepted either.
If I chose UCSD, it'll probably be because I liked the faculty and it's in Southern California, only half an hour from where I live.

As for the students who go there, I'm sure they'll get their pharmd degree eventually if they haven't already.

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education defines candidate status as follows:

Candidate: A new program that has students enrolled but has not had a graduating class may be granted Candidate status. The granting of Candidate status denotes a developmental program, which is expected to mature in accord with stated plans and within a defined time period. Reasonable assurances are expected to be provided that the program may become accredited as programmatic experiences are gained, generally, by the time the first class has graduated. Graduates of a class designated as having Candidate status have the same rights and privileges as graduates of an accredited program.

And according to what we were told during the interview, 24/25 of the graduated students took and passed the NAPLEX already, so they should be good to go. (the last one student is on an extended vacation...)

Everyone is worried about situations like Hawaii happening, but in all honesty they didnt disclose their status and that was the problem- they werent candidate or anything, it was joe-shmo's pharm school and people fell for it before accred was something students worried about. UCSD has had their 1st graduating class this past year and are scheduled to go through another evalution "spring 07". They're set to go and should potentially be accredited before next yr's graduation from what I understand.

As far as not having a pharmD, i think that is only pre-candidate schools who fail to attain candidate status before 1st class graduation that undergo that type of restriction

After looking around, apartments are pretty pricey and I too am wondering what kinda loans we can get...and how much? I already have learned you cant use grad schools loans to pay off a car (consolidate) or mortgage. Its probly impossible to find a tech/intern job near campus...so back to minimum wage it is...to have some spending money that is or atleast enough to make the monthly payment for a private loan that is...

I emailed UCSD about their affiliated housing. For the singles in the 4-bedroom apartment, their website said there is usually a 8-12 month wait! I asked them about this and they said it is true, and to put a move-in date that is earlier than August to get priority.

Because I'm finishing up my quarter and I know that my Human Phys grade is not going to be pretty, because my professor is stupid. ucsd has a 40-hour ippe program in the first year - 24 hours in a community or out-patient setting and 16 hours in a hospital or in-patient setting. i thought this was a new requirement for pharmacy schools, but that just might be in california (i don't remember). not to mention that first years get their intern licenses by the end of fall quarter, so a great majority of us are working by the first summer after first year.

Okay so for those of you choosing SD, what are your housing plans? I am not too familiar with SD and need some suggestions. I am also still waiting to get more information regardng campus apts and financial aid. Does anyone know when this will be mailed out?

i'd go ahead and start filling out fafsa if you haven't done so. ucsd's code for fafsa is 001317 (ucsd health sciences). i dont remember when we got our financial aid packet, but it was before school started.

if you're interested in living on-campus, i would put myself on the waiting list now: http://hds.ucsd.edu/hsgaffil/app_start.asp (scroll down to the bottom and click on new on-line application). 4-bedroom single grad housing (on-campus, own room, but you share a bathroom with 3 others) is a little over $400 i believe and comes with utilities. there is a new off-campus grad housing called 1 miramar that's opening this spring and is 2 bedroom and your own room costs $500 or so. the whole apartment gets assigned to one person, and you have the option of picking a friend to room with you. so if you know an older student well, you can get a room without going through the waitlist. (i believe that's how that will work...) 1 miramar has the capacity to take about half of the people on the current waitlist, so the waiting shouldn't be as long. i put myself on the wait list in march and got my first offer in december. lots of people used craigslist to find their place to live i'd say that an off-campus room costs ~$800-$1000 around ucsd, which you can split with a roomie.

there's also a grad housing listserv: http://mailman.ucsd.edu/mailman/listinfo/grad-housing-op-l where people are always looking for roomies. we set up a yahoo group for incoming first years in the summer and a lot of students got together to find places themselves.

I used to like USC.
Then I got waitlisted so i became bitter.
Then SD took me.
And I'm not waiting for SC.

Its 10+grand/yr more tuition, living is about the same cost, the neighborhood is...well, not as nice as la jolla, and they accept a class of 200 give or take so its not as exclusive as SD. Besides the name (which is only so due to athletics) SC doesnt really have much to attract me.

Now my friends @ sc hate me :(

My perspective place is a 2br 2ba with loft/den for 2100/mo.
Planned situation is: master bed/bath=850, bedroom+shared bath=675, loft+shared bath=575 or something like that. Its around 1100 sq.ft. so its a preety decent size for 3 people I think.

As far as campus housing, i spoke to a couple 1st years earlier and one has not been offered anything, the other got an offer during winter break, but was in a lease so had to decline!!

I was trying to be clever, i'm not going to bag on SD in a "kids going to SD" forum...haha but here are my reasons for chosing SD>SC
-Its 15K cheaper
-I've lived in OC my whole life, time to get out
-SD is a UC school, more respect. USC pharmacy isnt famous because of pharmacy its famous because of USC athletics
-Everyone goign to professional school is a nerd, personally, my looks arent what got me here, i'll admit it, so i cant be one to judge. Either way i'm not going to put down the 54 ladies i'm going to be going to school with next year ...except jindopowa who dissed herself...haha nice one
-La jolla is beautiful
-Its a new school, they actually listen to student's feedback based on what students have told me
-SC waitlisted me first round, those bastards, and SD accepted me w/ open arms so its a pride issue too lol
-finally, theres less smog in SD, the campus is modern, and the ocean water isnt so filthy you cant see your own reflection in it.
-SC is a great school, i'm sure, but for ME SD is better.

I would really think about what you said. USC as a whole school isn't known for pharmacy, but neither is UCSD. UNC has a fantastic pharmacy program, but everyone thinks of basketball when they think of the school. And why would a UC school get more respect? And to add, USC's school of pharmacy is well-known especialy in southern california. Both schools have their ups and downs, it just depends on what you're looking for.

Omg...what are you guys talking about? SD girls are hot, dude. Those white girls are the real deal with nice curves and fully developed. I didn't go UCSD but i did join my cousin's graduation a while ago and boy....gotta admit that they have the finest girls, especially these light skin Asian chicks/Americanized.

USC has pretty girls, too...but for some reasons, I think USC girls are cooler...at least in such a way that they all party hard and study hard, pretty darn smart. Can't judge SD yet 'cuz i only have 2 girls from SD and they both are nerds.

Yeah, prob is USC is ONLY known in so cali. I'm not saying USC is a bad school, 60% of cali RETAIL pharms are SC grads. As far as respect, i think because UCSD is a UC school, it has a reputation to live up to and because of this they will have to prove themselves worthy of being a sister school to UCSF.

As far as SD not having good looking ladies, it was doublehh03 who said that, i was attempting to express my lack of insight into the subject...and rx4life2004...wow that was a description if I've ever seen one "light skinned americanized asian chicks..." hahhaha

I never talked at all about your comment on girls. I'm not a guy nor am I from San Diego, so I don't have any insight on that topic :p

I agree with you though that UCSD will be up to par to UCSF in the future. I wouldn't say that that gives UCSD more respect though because that has yet to be fully earned. I think respect is something you receive because it's earned and not because of association.

As far as those picking UCSD vs USC, I think you should focus on what is important to you. If student involvement is important, look at the ways each program promotes that. If it's curriculum, see which one is better fit to how you learn best. USC is also on a semester system while UCSD is quarter, so which do you prefer? Do you work best in a small group of students or large group? Like others say, find the best program for you and what you want. Congrats everyone :)

UCSD pharm is a good school. but damn, i go to UCSD and those people don't have fun. i mean, u can study and have fun right? but from the interview, it looked like they study all day.

i need an environment where u can study but also party hard. after spending undergrad at UCSD, well, .

UCSD is respecte though. but cmon, USC is much more respecte right now as a pharmacy school. USC is like top 10. it was the first program to give out a pharm D. and UCSF only compares itself w/ USC right now.

UCSD will be gret in the future, but like in 10-15 more yrs.

Ok, now i get to be a little biznatch and say NOOOOO USC isnt in the top 10. US News and World rept ranked them #14 in 2K6.

Finally, i'm going to stop posting on this 'which is better' subject because its pointless. People sitting on the fence should use their spring break to revisit the pros and cons, and if possible, go see the school and area again.

When interviewing we were all trying to sell ourselves, and now that YOU have the choice, see which area/price/etc appeals to you most.

Senzabee is right, be a jr. pharmacist, if the benefits outweigh the side-effects, take the pill...or select the school in this case. :)

and btw, i haven't been accepted to USC. i've been to both interviews and that's the impression i get. both are great schools and USC has a better rep than u may think. like i said, UCSF students compared themselves most to USC's students (test scores...). so USC does have a high reputation.

Housing is craaaazy expensive !!!
I'm hoping for that one miramar apts to take me, but if not then going to try for a 2 bedroom/2bath +loft, those seem to be the best value wise if you split it among 3 roommates (total is around 2000). Going for a 1br or studio is atleast 1100ish (i'm talking lajolla only though) so unless living by yourself is a big issue sharing is prob. best. But lets see, most apt. complexes wont book places till about 3mo. in advance so i'm going to start actively looking at the end of may (after graduation) for now just feeling around and reading reviews and talking to ppl from around there
Any current SDers have suggestions for places to stay away from/and why?

i go to UCSD right now. generally speaking, living off campus with roommates is cheaper than living in UCSD Housing. La Jolla pretty much consists of just apartment complexes so you have lots to choose from, but I've found La Regencia to be the cheapest. Its also on the UCSD Shuttle route so you won't have to worry about parking on campus or taking the public city bus. The Shuttle gets you to campus in about 20 min. Prices go up every year so I'm not sure what it will be next year, but probably around 1600 for a 2-bedroom. Good Luck!
