Woot-Woot! kapz 03-12-2007, 11:13 PM woohoo ill b there too....where u guyz planing on living? pmp85 03-13-2007, 07:09 AM I'll probably be living on campus for the first year. Once I become a little more familiar with the area I may venture out to an off campus apartment. Howeverrrrrrr, waking up and strolling down to class is pretty enticing...:D j9xxx 03-13-2007, 01:18 PM ill be there too :) hello everyone! flakkyyb 03-13-2007, 01:40 PM I cannot wait to meet everyone. I am so excited.:) greatdeals225 03-13-2007, 09:29 PM I think I'll probably living on campus too. I think even if it's a bit more expensive, it'll be a good experience to have, whether good or bad... lol.. since i've never lived in a dorm during my pre-pharm years... I need to see what my budget is going to be like first. On campus is more expensive but, easier and you're around other students if you need help. Maybe we can do a get together when the time comes. Feel free to pm me with an email. Maybe we can try to figure some stuff out together like, all the rumors about MCP and what we really should brush up on before hand. :scared: Oh, I'm in Mass too. :) imkim01 03-15-2007, 08:07 PM Add me to that list. Hello everyone~ Welcome!! On campus housing is pricy, but I believe it is a good way of starting a new life in Worcester. When you have more friends and become familiar with the area, you will be able to move out easily. There are plenty of two or three bedrooms with a good price and decent neighbors but most of studios and onebedrooms are pricy like on campus housing. Some of my classmates were going to move out after first year, but they decided not to move out since they are so used to the convenient life. Rumors about MCP... So far, so good except a couple of professors making me crazy... but I believe any schools have some bad professors so better not complain too much... Party, have fun and enjoy the time you have now.... don't PM me with a question like what I need to study to prepare, won't answer that... you guys will have a plenty of time to study so again enjoy the time you have now... BUT if you have no pharmacy experience, I strongly recommend to work a couple of hours a week to see what is going on... Anyways, SEE you guys in a couple of month.. nightcrawleRx 03-15-2007, 09:51 PM Hey everybody, what's up? I'll be there as well next year and I too plan on living in the apartments, at least for the first year. greatdeals225 03-16-2007, 09:17 PM I think I'm going to reinforce my science background little by little to prep myself better for P1....but I won't forget to enjoy myself!! kapz 03-19-2007, 11:49 PM u guyz know when we start to apply for housing? greatdeals225 03-20-2007, 06:32 AM u guyz know when we start to apply for housing? You got in, you accepted your place, start supporting your future alma mater and get yourself prepared to start pharmacy school! If you got in you are intelligent enough to complete the program, so if you work your butt off and learn the material the "failing" will not concern you! Good luck guys! kapz 03-22-2007, 01:54 PM thats true....as of now immna stop worrying and b prepared to work my butt off in the fall....see y'all there! astevens 03-22-2007, 06:29 PM . greatdeals225 03-27-2007, 01:27 PM . Hey astevens.. I was wondering if Worcester has a specific time that they schedule exams on. For Mercer, they do theirs on mondays.... I wonder if worcester does it during class time or it varies... I was just trying to think of how to schedule my work hours and fit them ard my schedule.. thinking maybe 8 hours a week or sthg.. I hope that's not too much. astevens 03-28-2007, 06:07 PM Hey astevens.. Yeah- we have an exam block that changes every semester with our schedules (last semester it was wednesday afternoon, this semester Thursdays at 4). I think you'll be fine with 8 hours a week, I work 8-12 hours a week and its a bit rough sometimes, but I manage. They will send you your schedule pretty early so you can probably work out your work schedule ahead of time. astevens TBS5280 03-28-2007, 06:17 PM Do many of the pharm students have jobs? I had my interview with Dr. Krause I believe is how you spell his name and he said that my focuse should be on my classes. What pharmacies are around the school? I currently work at Kroger Pharmacy and know that there arent any in Mass. TBS5280 03-28-2007, 06:29 PM Does anyone know if we need to buy a laptop or whether one would be beneficial? I currently have a desktop, which is getting old and was not sure whether we needed a laptop. All your tests for all the classes are at a certain time outside of class? astevens 03-29-2007, 08:08 PM yep- this semester its every Thursday: 4-5:30, What do the P2s have DrugDealer? TBS5280 03-30-2007, 07:53 PM Does anyone know when orientation will be for the class of 2010? I just sent in my deposit and was wondering what info I will receive? cangelilli 03-30-2007, 09:19 PM Our orientation was at the end of August last year, I think they sent stuff out in May about it. I work 7 hours a week and it actually is a nice break from schoolwork. They will give you your class schedule and testing block time ahead of time so you can schedule work around it. There are plenty of pharmacies around, you won't have any problem finding some hours! Farmercyst 03-30-2007, 10:46 PM Moving to prepharm with the other class of threads. "pulls out umbrella" PossiblyCrazy 03-31-2007, 05:22 AM See you all there! DrugRX 03-31-2007, 06:11 AM does anyone know the national ranking of this school.....ive read other threads and im really scared......also the school has like a 70% retention rate which is one of the lowest in the nation......they apparently accept around 190 and the odd thing is that they only have around 130 something spots for roations.....im happy im going to this school...but im also scared...i cant afford to stay an extra year or even worse fail out b/c of the way they set up their classes like theraputics or pharmacy practical lab. I think the national ranking is very low because the ranking is based on research, funds and so on. MCP is not a research institute, so the ranking probably very low. Regarding the retention rate, we started with 190 students including manchester (40), so Worcester itself was 150. Now a couple of students quit or fell behind, and some of class of 2008 has joined us, so I think we are about 150 now. By the way, Worcester itself is accredited to graduate 135 students and Manchester has their own number ( I forgot what it was). I know school accepts more students than they can graduate, but according to Dean, if a school constantly graduate more students than they are accredited, ACPE increases the number of students that a school can graduate. I don't know if it is true or not, but there are always more than 15 students who quit due to personal reasons or fall behind because of academic difficulties. So as long as you don't get a F and keep up the GPA(2.2 or above), you won't have a problem to graduate. Don't worry too much. When you start school, don't get behind or underestimate any classes but prepare as much as possible. devoteduser 03-31-2007, 01:21 PM I had my Worcester interview on 3/26 and got the admissions decision (accepted) yesterday 3/30. They are very quick with the turn around! I liked the school and the labs/facilities in general but am hesitating to accept because of the expensive tuition. I figured it would probably be around 45K to attend and all of that would have to be in loans!! Is anyone else also debating the money issue as well? Also, the negative comments about the curriculum and the faculty is also factoring into the hesitation... Thanks in advance. TBS5280 03-31-2007, 05:33 PM I just recently signed onto facebook and created a group for the class of 2010. If you want to join the group is called MCPHS '10. Just thought we can see who will be attending the campus in the fall. If you are not part of the class of 2010, but another class you can still join. greatdeals225 04-03-2007, 09:33 PM for those who are already at MCP, will we need to get CPR-certified once we are at MCP? i am certified through the American Heart Assoc. for the BLS for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) program, but it's expiring soon.. You need to be certified before you can go on your advanced rotations. They have classes set up all through the spring semester of the 2nd year so that you will have it done by August. This year the classes are each week, just next door in the L&L center. It's 4-5 hours and ~$70. DrugDealer 04-04-2007, 09:20 PM yep- this semester its every Thursday: 4-5:30, What do the P2s have DrugDealer? Every other Friday, we have a Med Chem/Pharmacology exam during the time we would normally have class. The following Monday (so every other Monday), we have a Therapeutics exam during our regular class time. So...every other weekend is shot. Our elective and physical assessment exams are also during regular class time, they just aren't as frequent! All our exams last year were during regular class time, too. It might be nice to have an exam block so we could squeeze a few extra therapeutics classes in and dilute everything out a tad. pmp85 04-05-2007, 05:24 AM You need to be certified before you can go on your advanced rotations. It does say to cross out what you don't want, sign it, and send it back. The letter looks strange though...there is no where to sign...I plan on NOT crossing anything out and taking the entire loan, I actually need more due to my EFC. So, I'm not really sure also. Do they ask you certain questions through the mail to determine compatibility? astevens 04-06-2007, 10:42 AM yeah- there is a personality survey and a room request thing, but I think 6 persons are about all that is left. Also if you want to request a certain floor (4-8) or whatever you are welcome to do that too. Just a couple of suggestions on the 6-persons. The L type apartments have a great living room, but very very small kitchens (and room D is huge! and rooms E and F are discounted because they are smaller), The straight 6 bedroom apartments have a bigger kitchen, and I think an extra closet in the entry way (all the rooms here are the same size). Sorry If this confuses you- but the packets have diagrams of the apartments and I thought you might like some info that is a bit more practical than a blue print. According to the packet, we have 4 apartment styles left, are the bedrooms that are normal rate abt the same size? meaning a 2person and a 6-person (regular) unit bedrooms abt the same size? it doesn't look like it from the drawings. we have 2-typeB, 3typeA, 6 type B, and 6 type A left.. what would you personally suggest? also, on the housing contract, there are 4 sections we have to answer, but nowhere on the form does it let us list out our housing choices 1,2,3, any ideas?? also, what would be a difference between 4th floor and 8th floor? astevens 04-06-2007, 10:22 PM Hi, I just got the housing assignment. Ok- so there is 1 2typeB apartment (which is tiny!- no living room), and 2 rooms in the three bedroom apartment (both women spots), and then 6 bedrooms. (I'm friends with the RD so she told me what was left) Personally- I would suggest 6 person type B room D and overnighting your housing packet to ensure you get it- that is a huge room compared to the rest! Everything else is basically the same size regardless of the type. If you do get a 6 person though, I would suggest getting a small fridge because sharing one fridge with 5 other people can be a challenge sometimes. Ok- on the contract there is a box of some sort and you just write in your choices somewhere in the box (and obviously state which is first choice, 2nd, etc). Also- as far as floor type, its not that much different- I live on 8 because I don't like having to hear people above me, but other people like living on four or five because its less of an elevator ride- All the floors are nice though so I wouldn't sweat it. Price isn't too much of a concern only because more often than not, you get what you pay for and I want something reliable. I was figuring somewhere around $1500, including warranties. I love the Sony's...I've already checked a few out at BestBuy but I just feel you overpay a little because of the name. I found a Toshiba I like alot but I've never had one and don't know much about them. And of course, for the price, Dell is always an option I suppose. Anyways, I'll figure it out eventually and I appreciate the response, any other comments are welcome. greatdeals225 04-13-2007, 07:26 AM DrugDealer and greatdeals, thanks for the opinions. I'm not 100% sure but from my understanding it isn't very common to get anything but loans for a professional program. Scholarships are the same, while I'm sure they may be out there, they're much harder to get compared to undergrad. Don't feel bad, my aid is almost completely loans as well...it sucks but at least we should be making fairly good money out of school, that's just the way it goes. I also don't think it will cost $51,000 for the year. That's what they assume it will cost you. On top of the $33,000 tuition you will need housing. I think on-campus 6-rooms are about $8,000. Then books, parking, all the other stupid fees colleges charge, etc. I would bet the $51,000 in aid will leave you with a few thousand left over but then again who knows. Payin off these loans will def be a pain in the ass but I'm just gonna take one step at a time. I can't do anything about it so I'll worry about it after I get out...but you should call MCP anyways, it's worth a try...good luck. greatdeals225 04-22-2007, 07:22 PM I'm not 100% sure but from my understanding it isn't very common to get anything but loans for a professional program. DrugRX 04-30-2007, 11:54 AM are the professors good with sticking to your exam schedules? i have had instances where professors reschedule the exam because he fell behind on his teaching or any other factor.... I think it is a school policy that professors can't just change the exam date unless majority of students request with a valid reason. Everyone including professor MUST agree with the new date, and professors have to see dean to confirm the date. So most likely, once the exam schedule is out, it is done deal. Most of professors are pretty good at keeping up their schedules, so you won't have any problems of planning ahead. This is a week of final and just done with Biochem II/Nutrition. I have been looking at some apartments near school. Like a 4 minute walk if that. For a 2 bedroom with utilities and including internet is around 450 a month, cheaper than school apartments. I was wondering if anyone is interested in getting a roommate. Or, if 2 other people are interested I have seen some 3 bedrooms for 900. So with utilities maybe 400 a piece. I got a car, pots, dishes, silverware, car, couch, dining table, tv, xbox 360 etc. I live an hour from Worcester by the way so I know the surrounding area. Little info about me: 26 yrs old, male, Portuguese (if it matters). PM me if anyone is interested. Maybe you already know this if you're from the area, but anything that costs $450 in downtown Worcester is going to be totally ghetto and you will have crackheads and prostitutes living in that same building. There is decent stuff in walking distance from school, but that starts at around $1000. I just have a quick question. What would be "pushing it" in regards to MCPHS's 500-word essay limit? +/- 50 words? +/- 100? I am just wondering because I'm having difficulty shaping my essay with their strict structure (using 500 words to explain three topics is pretty strict to me, haha). Anyways, please shed some light for me... thank you :o nightcrawleRx 06-18-2007, 07:44 AM Hey guys...I am applying to worcester this year can u guys give me ur stats or advice to make my app more competitive....I have low GPA:( My suggestion would be to work towards your Bachelor’s degree. While doing so you can try to improve your overall GPA and show improvement. It also gives you something to fall back on if pharmacy school doesn’t work out. It is becoming more and more common for schools to favor students holding a degree…I wouldn’t be surprised if 70% or more of our class has at least a Bachelor’s. I have my B.S. in Biology and I don’t necessarily think that makes me or anyone else “smarter” than someone without a degree. However, I think it does show maturity somewhat. You could be 19 or 20 and have all the pre-reqs done and most people with a Bachelor’s don’t finish until 22-23, maybe older. Even though that is only a few years, there is a big difference between a 19 year old and a 23 year old. Of course, if you already have a degree then I guess the best thing would be to get experience in a pharmacy setting or to re-take any pre-pharm courses that you did poorly in. Best of luck. nightcrawleRx 06-18-2007, 07:46 AM Hi all. Anyways, please shed some light for me... thank you :o I would say +/- 50 words is fine…I don’t think they sit there counting words, I certainly wouldn’t but they would know if you blatantly went over the 500 word limit. I can’t remember but I think there is also a section on the application where you can tell the adcom anything else you think would be worthwhile for them to know. My advice is to just stay positive on anything you write and if you don’t have enough space to get everything on paper then try to cut it down and explain it better if and when you get an interview. JDumass06 06-18-2007, 10:56 AM my essay was pretty ****ty, writing was never my strong point but i think it was like 475-490. i lived with a business major tho and he helped me make my resume as good as it could be. i probably got in based on my gpa and the fact that i have a B.S. tho, i wasnt too confident after my interview but i heard from MCP 3 days later......ive heard from other students that having a BA or BS really helps PossiblyCrazy 06-18-2007, 12:49 PM Hey.. did anyone else notice that the Fall 2007 class schedule has been posted on the MCPHS website? DrugRX 06-19-2007, 11:21 AM What are examples of learning service that the school wants you to do? There are various service learning sites available like free clinic, high school, elementary school, boy scout and so on. There are more but I don't remember all of them. What I did was tutoring Math at community college. Some students still go there from time to time to help them out. In the beginning, I had no idea why pharmacy students need to do this, but it is NOT that bad; you get to interact with people out of your boundary and you do learn something. I know you have to always wear you lab coat while in the building and I know some people like to bitch about the dress policy. Quite honestly, I don't really care, I mean it's nice to roll out of bed and toss on some shorts and sandals and stroll into class but I understand that you wouldn't do that at your job and that's essentially what this prepares you for. I'm wondering if we get to chose the time we want to go. You meet for class for those 50 minutes each week and discuss various ways to be a more compassionate pharmacist, or to address cultural diversity, or to discuss the benefit of volunteering. You'll have articles to read and you'll discuss them. We met for 1.5 hours each week, actually. The actual volunteering is done on your own time. We have one girl whose skirt is always shorter than her lab coat. So, for regular lectures, you can get away with anything. For lab and formal presentations, you must dress professionally, which also excludes all open-toed shoes (just like most work environments) and shorts. I had a blood test for chicken pox because Doctor had no record of me having it. I had no chest x-ray done and the health records place said that everything was fulfilled. Information Services has actively worked to implement solutions that address that trend, as well as adapt to future needs. Within the next several weeks, IS will be implementing high-speed multifunction printers in our high-volume print areas within the College. These printers have a much higher capacity for the volume of our printing environment, increasing productivity for all. With the implementation of this new equipment, a policy has been created to address several areas of concern for many students. Stay tuned for more announcements regarding this new feature soon! 3) Student quotas will be enforced, and the selected number of pages per semester was determined after analyzing historical data from previous semesters. Patho: The pysiology book assigned is different than the one we had, but one of the profs lectures right out of the book. I know some people who never used it and others who referenced it a lot. I think it depends on your studying habits. I haven't used the patho book at all so I wouldn't recomend buying it, you can always reference the library's copy if you need to. US Health Care: You will need both of these texts! Lahoz will not cover all of the material because she expects you to complete her chapter study guides. The study guides helped me a lot though- so I would recommend doing them. IPC- you will never open that book. I forgot I even had it until I moved last week- so don't waste your money on that one. Ok- I think thats all of them- if I missed anything or if you have any other questions feel free to ask or pm me. Thanks Astevens DrugRX 07-15-2007, 08:06 PM I think you need to buy... 1. Biochem <- Don't need this. his lecture note is more than enough. 2. Calculation <- Some people share but it is better for you to buy this one 3. Physio/Path <- If you don't have any physio book, then buy. Otherwise, don't even bother... especially patho book 4. US Health <- Need both None of recommended books are necessary, I think. DrugDealer 07-15-2007, 08:37 PM Hey DrugDealer, Can you please give P1s some advices on ways of preparing for P2 courses? Summer semester is about to be done and we are going to start an intermediate rotation after vacation. What would you do if you go back to a year before to make yourself more prepared? What/how should we study/do to do well for P2 courses especially for therapeutics? Your advice would be greatly appreciated! Here's what I did and it seemed to work: During your intermediate rotation, you have to do an Rx drug digest (similar to the OTC drug digest you did this spring). It never gets collected, so many students did not take it seriously. I honestly worked on it everyday, though--I would work on it at my site when it was slow. That may have been overkill, but I spent my time making tables of the drugs...brand, generic, dosage forms, doses, ADRs, etc. So, when therapeutics came around in the fall, I already had the beginnings of all my tables. I could just insert extra columns and rows as needed. (Oh, yeah, I obviously recommend you type it up; some of my friends hand-wrote theirs but I think that is retarded). I used my F&C since we had to buy it for PPP lab anyway, and as much as I love the internet databases, it's nice to have a hard copy to look at. BUT, I tried hard not to just type word-for-word what I was reading. I read it, thought about, then typed it up in my own words. A lot of the mechanisms of action were foreign to me at the time, so I always made sure I understood them before I proceeded to write about the rest of the drug class (it sort of makes sense to do the MOA before moving on to doses, CIs, precautions, DDIs, etc). I often had to review my basic physiology first, and whenever possible, I would incorporate little pictures of the MOA in my drug digest (Wikipedia totally rocks!). I went back to CA for my intermediate rotation, so I didn't bother to take my phys or pathophys book with me--the internet was sufficient for this basic background. My boyfriend thought I was crazy spending so much time on this, but it totally paid off in the fall and for the rest of my P2 year. I already had a one up on all the MOAs in pharmacology and for making study tables. I often brought sections of my drug digest to class with me as a reference. I also brought my OTC book to my rotation site, and picked a different topic to "re-learn" each day. I would ask my preceptor what he usually recommended for a specifc symptom, and then we would talk about the book's recommendations. He often learned something, too, and it's the drugs we talked about that I still remember. I was also at a very slow store (Target), so you may not have time to just sit down and read a chapter from the OTC book. I didn't specifically do these things to prepare for my P2 year, but it certainly ended up helping. LD50 07-16-2007, 05:10 PM p2's: any suggestions on the best service learning choices? kids, adults, elderly, clinics? also, dumb question, but i am guessing that course packets are a MUST. (money's tight so just making sure!) lastely, how about parking? i will be commuting so i was wondering if i should wait and get parking at orientation, or go through a private lot/garage by myself. thanks in advance. ChemTA 07-16-2007, 05:11 PM I have finally received my award letter, but the school barely gives me $3000 per semester! Do you guys all have to apply for private student loans? Any one know the site where I can access my billing statement online? Appreciated very much~ Hope you enjoy your last didactic portion. It will be done in about 2 weeks! No, they'll only any post any extra slides that they've added since the packet went to the printers, or other stuff that's not in the packets. It's only like $60-$80 a semester, and you will use them. They're what you'll take your notes on. The course packets are a MUST. I know the money issue, so maybe you can make a copy from your friend if you want to save a couple of bucks. They are the lecture notes so you will need them for SURE!! We can't say which site is better since we haven't been to other sites. In my opinion, tutoring (adults) is generally easier since you don't need to prepare for anything and time also goes by fast. astevens 07-17-2007, 11:25 AM "p2's: any suggestions on the best service learning choices? kids, adults, elderly, clinics?" It really depends on what you want. Salvation Army and PACE are with in walking distance. Abbey's House was a bust this past year and the clinics go really really fast. I did pace (adult tutoring- for esl and ged track) and I enjoyed it. But a lot of it is the type of people you like to work with. "also, dumb question, but i am guessing that course packets are a MUST. (money's tight so just making sure!)" Yes- you should |
