I am pretty sure that someone had mentioned before that the class was aboubt 2/3 full. That was a few weeks ago. I also heard that the last interviews were on Friday. There are still some spots for people on the waitlist and I think that people will start hearing soon. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!:luck: :luck:

I read on DCOM's site that today is the last day of interviews. I would imagine that most schools will finish this month and that the waitlists should start rolling in the middle or end of May since May 15 is a big date for MD apps, I believe. I think that up until May 15, matriculation fees are refundable, but not after it. I'm sure there is more to the date than just that, so I know someone will fill in the blanks for me.

I still haven't received anything yet regarding financial aid either, so we just get to wait some more - but I can't imagine it will be too much longer. I can't wait to see how much debt I'll be accumulating!!! :meanie:

I am from Northern Cali, a growing town called Roseville...nowhere near the beach...but I too love living on the west coast. But I did fall in love with Harrogate when I went to DCOM to interview... Definately different (but a good different) from california life. I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE!!!!:hardy:

So what's the latest housing news for those of you who are single and not living in the DCOM housing? Any luck with rental housing?

I'm planning to go up there for a few days just before Memorial Day to sign a lease or purchase contract for something, so I wanted to get a feel for what everyone else is planning to do.

I'm not sure I want roommate(s) at this point (because I don't know anyone there), but is anyone interested in renting a room if I were to rent/buy a larger house?

Interviews...and hopefully a little bit of house hunting..I'm afraid that's going to take more than this trip, but we'll see how it goes.

I also hope to make it up to the school and say hi, but I'm not even sure I'm going to be able to do that. I do want to make the drive from Halls to Harrogate taking 33 Hwy at least once so I might do that while she's interviewing, but who knows. :)

I had hoped to stop by and say hi when we went down, but we had no time. I did get a quick picture when I stopped by to register the kids in daycare, but that was all that I had time for. If you have a good list of houses to look at, you can probably find one this trip.

The drive on 33 is not bad, but I personally preferred 75 to 63, which is why we bought a house off of 63. But, the drive on 33 is definitely reasonable. I am so happy to be done with all of that. Now if I can only get packed and moved. We are less than a month away from our moving date! :scared:

If someone were willing to give up some critters, our lives would get much easier...and cheaper, as we search for a place to live.

That new construction up by Norris sounds great...but makes us both commute 30minutes or more. I might have to look into it though.

Since we're looking to buy down closer to Knoxville, I might be in the market for a CHEAP rental for a place to stay up close to school a few nights a week, but that's very preliminary.

Hmm, anyone know where the Hickory Star Boat Dock is exactly?

I'm starting to get the feeling it's almost dumb to look for rental places already since I'm not moving down til July. Everything's either month to month or won't be available come July.

LOL! Sorry. There are several ways to go from Knoxville to Harrogate. 75 is the highway. You get off of that at Jacksoboro and take 63 into Harrogate. That is the way that you go through Lafollette. We also drove 33 and 25 and while 33 is not bad, I thought it was an easier drive on 75 and 63. So, we had decided that somewhere off of 63 would be perfect. Amazingly enough, our realtor found the perfect house for us in the perfect location.

OK, that makes sense...I drove the I-75 North out of Knoxville and East on 63 route when we went for my interview. My hope is that highway 33 is similar to 63 in terms of quality. If it's close, I'm happy. New Tazewell/Tazewell will probably take a little time to get through, but can't take as long as it took me to get through Jacksboro/LaFollette.

With the job thing, i think this is the location we're going to be happiest with, and I'm keeping re-sale in mind too...so I hope Halls is the right decision.

I would call it "firmly under contract"...meaning it's just a matter of closing on it. I don't foresee anything stopping that closing from happening (knock on wood).
Good luck with listing it! I wish you a quick turnaround! Constantly keeping it spotless and having to leave your own house SUCKS.

It seems far but all in all not too bad. Most of the places we have been looking at are in Maynardville (~30 miles), LaFollette (~ 35 miles) and Jacksboro (~38 miles). Halls (where MJB is looking) is ~ 45 miles. There is the most variety in these places and have every amenity we want. There are some houses we've looked at in Harrogate and are not at all opposed to living there, it just makes years 3 and 4 a longer trip, but in some ways that may be easier - but who knows. Either way, it will work out just fine.

I'm looking to do the same thing. I'm actually leaving to drive down in about an hour or so and I'm looking for a house to rent with a few rooms. When are either of you looking to move down? I wouldn't be there til probably early July but I feel as though most of the things I'll see now will be gone by then. By if someone is looking to move down in June I wouldn't feel so bad about just throwing down a months rent to cover May and then half or a third for June. Also I'm afraid that if I wait too long everything will be gone come crunch time and I'll be s.o.l...

I'll sign a contract on something the next time in Tennessee. I'm not sure exactly when I am going, as I have a few other commitments that I need to take care of as well. Honestly, I'm not interested in renting in another person's place, because I have a 2 bedroom condo full of furniture that I'm moving up there, so it wouldn't make sense. But like I said, I will be paying rent/mortgage on something starting sometime in May, even though I won't be there until July.

By the way, are you only interested in Harrogate, or are you interested in LaFollette, Jacksboro, etc. as well? TzDoc, what are your geographical restrictions?

Nope. My reject was just a 29. Thanks for making me feel better.

Ah, ok. I'm really looking anywhere that I can find. Mostly it's been Middlesboro, Harrogate, Tazewell and New Tazewell.

If you find anything please post it on here. My wife and I will be heading that way next month to look for place. We also have 4 kids, so anything with 3 bd/2ba would be great. :)

Granted provisional accreditation by COCA in September 2006, the Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) in Harrogate, Tenn, will open its doors this fall.

The school has received more than 2,100 applications for its inaugural class of 150 students, says AOA Trustee Ray E. Stowers, DO, the college’s dean. “We are very satisfied with the quality of the applicants,” he emphasizes.

To fulfill its mission of training students to become primary care physicians who will practice in underserved rural areas in Tennessee and other parts of Appalachia, LMU-DCOM’s first priority is to recruit students from Tennessee, according to Dr Stowers. The school’s second priority is to recruit from other Appalachian states, especially Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. And its third priority is to recruit students from anywhere in the country who would make good primary care physicians.

“We hope that at least 70% of our students will go into primary care,” Dr Stowers notes. “But we also hope our graduates will train in other specialties, from general surgery to gastroenterology, and practice in rural areas.”

In reviewing applications and in interviewing candidates for admission, LMUDCOM looks for indications that prospective DOs will thrive in rural practice settings. “We look for people who have confidence because physicians who practice in rural environments don’t have a wide range of specialists to back them up,” Dr Stowers explains.

“We look for people who have strong records of community service because physicians who practice in small towns are expected to get involved in their communities.

“And to identify students who would enjoy practicing in the Appalachian region, we look for people who are outdoors-oriented, such as candidates who love hiking and fishing, as opposed to those who are more interested in urban cultural activities, such as going to the opera.”

LMU-DCOM’s curriculum will stress the interdependence of the biological, clinical, behavioral and social sciences. Instruction in the first and second years will be organized according to the body’s major organ systems, such as the endocrine system, the cardiovascular system and the reproductive system. The organ-system courses, which will vary in length, will integrate instruction in anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology and virology, as well as clinical science considerations.

Third- and fourth-year students will serve rotations in the 10 Appalachian hospitals and many community health centers with which LMU-DCOM has established relationships, Dr Stowers says. With the final year emphasizing rural practice, fourth-year students spend two months in rural primary care settings.

Scheduled to be completed in June, the four-story, 105,000-square-foot facility that will house the college will include lecture halls and classrooms, faculty and administrative offices and laboratories. Of particular note, according to Dr Stowers, is the college’s patient-simulation laboratory that will feature interactive, lifelike SimMan®, SimWoman® and Sim-Baby® computerzied mannequins. These mannequins simulate a full rage of physiologic processes.

Wow, I wonder how many of us have 4 kiddos? That sure seems to be a common number at DCOM.

There are new houses being built in Union Court off 33 in Maynardville. I'm not sure of your budget, but they are really cheap. They range from $139k to $154k. We looked at the one that was $154k and the construction was fantastic (crown molding, 5" baseboards, hardwood in living and dining, FP, front porch, flat backyard, laundry upstairs, stainless appliances, etc.)! It was only about 1650 sq feet but seemed bigger. 3 beds/2.5 bath plus a bonus room.

Good luck. I live in Knoxville, if anyone has any Qs I can try to help. Just PM me. See you soon.

Hmm, anyone know where the Hickory Star Boat Dock is exactly?

I'm starting to get the feeling it's almost dumb to look for rental places already since I'm not moving down til July. Everything's either month to month or won't be available come July.

Uh...I'd opt for another location, but that's just me!

I am sure I can easily find everyone but the rheumatologist. There don't see to be a lot around. Maybe I should into rhuematology.... What about at the hospitals in Lafollette and Tazewell? Thanks!:)

The hospital in Claiborne county is in Tazewell and is appropriately named, Cliaborne County Hospital. Lafollette is bigger than Claiborne if I'm not mistaken, but not by much. It's a St. Mary's hospital (same as the actual St. Mary's and St. Mary's North). Was that your question? I don't know if there are doctor's offices located on site, but I'm sure there are some around the hospital. Rhuematologist might require a trip to knoxville!

My hope is that highway 33 is similar to 63 in terms of quality.

It is.

New Tazewell/Tazewell will probably take a little time to get through, but can't take as long as it took me to get through Jacksboro/LaFollette.

New Tazewell never has traffic. It's a breeze to go through even during "rush hour". It usually consists of the old men going to Hardees for coffee.

Yea, I checked and will have to go to Knoxville for a rheumatologist.:o But, there are plenty of the other types of doctors around.

There is a Dr. Charles DeBusk (IM) at Claiborne County Hospital. What do you guys think....any relation?

I saw that when we were there. The only thing that takes some getting used to is when cars pull onto the highway from the side streets. To have a car cross like that while doing 65 mph was a little different at first, it messes with your eye. The first couple of times I was like  but now I am  It will be so nice to drive from point A to point B at a constant speed with only 1, maybe 2 stoplights. While watching the Idol Gives Back stuff tonight, they featured eastern KY and the literacy problem and lack of books at area schools. It made me think about that golf outing we've been talking about. I think a really good thing would be to donate money to the area schools (libraries, after school programs, etc.) because of the literacy problem in the area. Not only could donations go toward that, but also, if we get hole sponsors, we could have them donate 10 kids books in addition to some cash. I think this would be a great way to give back to the community. What do y'all think?

This is true, but all counties did not participate until recently. It was started by Dolly Parton and then the Governor promoted the program. It's called Imagination Library and here are two websites

I've never had dental insurance so would someone explain to me what coinsurance is? I see it's 100% for preventative. I'm confused? I've always just had to pay out of pocket.

Coinsurance is your wallet or another insurance policy if you have one. So if something is paid 80%, the coinsurance would be 20%. But in this dental preventive is covered 100% -so you can get your teeth cleaned plus small cavities filled and the insurance will pay for it.

That list cracks me up. I didn't think it was that difficult to tell who got in and who didn't or hasn't applied yet before the list was made.

I guess it must be difficult looking from the outside in.

I know 11 bucks a month isn't much, but the policy we have already costs me like 120/month (for both of us)..so I'd prefer to just keep it.

I figured you were young enough that life insurance wouldn't be necessary. Ours is overdone.

Everyone needs life insurance. That is like saying: "You're young enough to not have to worry about debt." Not only is that ridiculous, but it is also naive. One must always be aware of their personal finances.

I personally hate this insurance crap. Hardly am I ever sick or hurt enough to need health insurance, and when I do use it, it's still an @$$-raping experience.

I didn't worry about life insurance until I had a house loan, car loan, etc...I guess that was about 25.

Used to feel about the same as you about health insurance....then I got diagnosed with Hodgkin's...now I'm very glad I had it or I'd be dead or likely homeless or living with family trying to pay off over 100K of bills.

Insurance is for big things, I figured you already knew that since you have everything else figured out.

Welcome back, by the way. How you got silenced and your sidekick trekkie didn't is amazing.

Thanks. Actually do you know of the best paper to look in to find realty listings?

I went to the Wal-Mart in Middlesboro, KY and bought several papers that had listings for properties in the area. It would kinda depend on where you're looking. For the Halls area then the Knox News Sentinel.

Yea. Fortunately for us coming from PA to harrogate everything is like, $200,000 cheaper here than the same thing would be back home. So it feels like the prices are really good and it'd be stupid not to buy. Plus with everyone that's going to be coming in to the area in the next few years market prices are only going to go up, so why not make some money when it comes time to sell a few years down the road.

I got my physical today btw...

I hadn't seen a PCP since my pediatrician. I almost forgot about the whole turn left and cough bit.

I have a positive Mantoux test...but fortunately my chest x-ray looked clear. It's amazing how quickly all of that can be taken care of when your dad is a specialist who is friends with tons of PCPs through referrals.

 That is true, but I needed the room because of my kids and animals. Plus, I plan on staying in the area long term. My hope is to go to UT for the FM residency, then do the OB fellowship there, and then stay in the area to practice medicine. So, it was definitely the right decision for us.:D

Yeah, the taxes in TN are awesome. We were talking to some friends last week about the less than $700 per year taxes when they told us that they were paying almost $9000 per year. Also, since it is a new house, the taxes sky rocket after the first year living there, and at that point, their escrow didn't factor that big jump and they were paying over $1000 per month on taxes alone    I about passed out.

Oh...but I have anywhere from 20-45 children scattered throughout the greater Dallas metroplex.

Are you driving or flying to TN? Maybe you should try to get a line of kids from TX to TN!! :D

I don't know if there's any cracker barrels in the DCOM area. You might want to check out some other med schools!

This question is directed toward those living in TN and familiar with the LaFollette/Jacksboro/Maynardville/Halls areas. I noticed on 63 that there are, what I call garbage depots, where residents dump their garbage, since there is no way on God's green earth on of those trucks could drive on some of those roads. Is this the case with the above areas or do they have curbside garbage pickup?

Yes, an odd question, but it will make a difference as to what vehicle I will be buying in the next couple of months.

Interesting.

Yeah. If you go onto some of the smaller roads, you will find signs advertising someone who will come to your house once a week to pick up your garbage for $6/week. There are depots on 63 (about 10-15 minutes from DCOM) and on 25/33 - they each have about 10-15 dumpsters on concrete pads you can drive up to and throw out your trash.

I was wondering what I was going to do with my garbage. LOL! Well, I guess that answers that question. Thanks! :D

Hey the preferred lenders list is up... everybody should do a credit check on themselves before applying for the grad plus loans just to make sure your elligible...from the fed web site.....What is considered to be an adverse credit history?
You are considered to have an adverse credit history if you are 90 or more
days delinquent on any debt or if, within 5 years of the date of the credit
report, you have been the subject of a default determination, bankruptcy
discharge, foreclosure, repossession, tax lien, wage garnishment, or writeoff
of a Federal Student Aid debt (for example, a Direct Loan or Federal

Did you get the email today? :D I am gonna wait and send it all together, I will be down there on May 12th so I thought I would try and have it done then and just drop it off to make sure it gets there.

But if some parts may take a while you may want to send it in parts. just a thought

I'm sure they tell you the exact number of spots available if you call and ask, but I doubt they are going to fill up anytime soon. I assume they will only be half full this year, and then be completely full after the second class comes in.

Maybe we need to start a med student apartment list...

When I talked to Dr. Leo today he said he figured about half the class would be living in the apartments. Also, you can now do the two room units as a single person, you don't need anyone to live with you.

On a side note, I made an offer on a house today!!!! It's AMAZING and located in Middlesboro. There are 5 bedrooms so I'll be able to rent out 4 of them if anyone is looking. It's a huge place and I'm hoping they'll accept the offer so we'll see how it goes.

That is if I even cared about who got in and who hasn't. Sounds like a hint of envy in that post, it's okay, your wish may come true ... someday.

All that matters to me is that I got in. Period. I win.

Nope, don't watch ER.

You missed it then. Some Star Trek dude dressed in a Klingon outfit and got a beat down. Broken forearm and dislocated shoulder. I thought maybe you found Riker and, well, you know the rest :meanie: :beat:

When I talked to Dr. Leo today he said he figured about half the class would be living in the apartments. Also, you can now do the two room units as a single person, you don't need anyone to live with you.

On a side note, I made an offer on a house today!!!! It's AMAZING and located in Middlesboro. There are 5 bedrooms so I'll be able to rent out 4 of them if anyone is looking. It's a huge place and I'm hoping they'll accept the offer so we'll see how it goes.

Congrats!! Good luck on getting the home! :luck: :) :luck:

This question is directed toward those living in TN and familiar with the LaFollette/Jacksboro/Maynardville/Halls areas. I noticed on 63 that there are, what I call garbage depots, where residents dump their garbage, since there is no way on God's green earth on of those trucks could drive on some of those roads. Is this the case with the above areas or do they have curbside garbage pickup?

Yes, an odd question, but it will make a difference as to what vehicle I will be buying in the next couple of months.

Are you serious. I know Halls has garbage pick up because it is Knox Co. I'm am sure Jacksboro, Maynardville and La Follete have service too. As for the extent into the country side, I am not sure. There are garbage depots to drop larger items. Come on, were not all rednecks!

 :p I know. Like I said, while driving thru the back roads, etc. I know that a garbage truck couldn't get thru, so I was just checking. Granted, I was more in the backwoods at times (that is where I saw the garbage pickup signs), but I just wanted to make sure. But thank you for answering my question, even though it is a weird one.

Okay, so looking at the preferred lenders list and I'm trying to decide between Chase and EdAmerica. With Ed you end up getting a total of 1.25% Interest rate reduction and 2% off principle -after all is said and done.

With Chase your looking at a total of 2.60% interest rate reduction.

For all you finance savy people, which is the better deal? Also, my understanding is that if you have all one lender you can't consolidate. Is that true? I had EdA for ug.

I am so pissed off right now, for the past year Ive been cleaning up my credit and up until this month its been nearly perfect.... I took my own advice and did a three bureau credit report which I do every 3 months or so and when I checked there was a fraudulent account on my report for 46 bucks from some pissant collection agency for a verizon wireless account in san diego which I never opened....number one I live in chicago and do not nor have I ever lived san diego.. number two it took me almost 2 hours to find a phone number and contact info the collection agency number three all of the info online about this collection agency are blogs about people having fraudulent accounts added to their credit report. So I just got back from filing a fraud report at the police station and now Im wondering what the hell to do because you cant have any delinquent accounts on your credit report when you apply for the grad plus loans. I am so pissed off Im tempted to find out the address of the collection agency and pay them a personal visit.....

First and foremost, report it to each bureau immediately. They should put something in the report showing is under a dispute and what the dispute is. I would both call each bureau and send them each a letter. Also, when you are applying for the loan, show the police report and letters to the loan company (via fax or whatever) and I would imagine you would be OK. BUT REPORT THIS TO THE BUREAUS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh man, that sucks. Is it only the one account that they opened? The same thing happened to my roommate but they opened a few credit cards, a cell phone plan and something else. She went through a whole **** load of trouble and once it was said and done they only closed one of the credit cards. So now she has to do it all over again to try and get them to close the others. Hopefully things go more smoothly for you! :luck: :luck:

We have had this happen before and we had to get a letter from the collection agency saying that it was incorrect. We then took it to the local credit bureau and filed it on our report. We also took the fraud report and gave that to the credit bureau.

Sounds like a hint of envy in that post, it's okay, your wish may come true ... someday.

Envious? Hardly.
Jealous of everyone who has already been accepted? No doubt.
Anxious to move to Tennessee? You bet.

Have you been accepted yet? Or will we be seeing you stalking us as you watch from the outside of DCOM through the glass windows ...?

Why do you have such an obsession for updates on my status? I'm pretty sure you think about it even more than I do. The good news is that, because someone with a bit of concern for making things easier on his classmates posted a list, you can see the status of everyone associated with DCOM. Check it regularly for updates.

And you'll see me around next year one way or the other. I have a hunch we'll either wind up good friends, or you'll wish you never met me.

Well I contacted the three bureaus and disputed the account. I also put a fraud alert on my report. The big question is whether I should pay the damn 46 bucks so I can get it removed quickly AND then keep fighting it with the police, collection agency, and credit bureau. Luckily I took my blood pressure pill this morning otherwise my head would pop from being pissed off.

Even if you pay it, it will still be on your credit report. They will just update it as "paid", so you need to fight it out with everyone to actually have it removed. Good luck with that!:luck:

I associate envy with resenting someone & bitterness/wishing nobody else to have something if I can't have it too; and jealousy as simply wishing I had something that someone else already has. If my semantical perspective on the words does not suit your usual high standards, I apologize...but I hope that cleared up where I was coming from a bit.

EXACTLY! I agree with DoctorMom78's reply. DO NOT pay the debt unless you have a WRITTEN and signed agreement with the CA stating that the CA will remove all records/listings of the said account from all major credit reports. This is extremely important because, as DoctorMom78 said, if you pay the debt without such an agreement, the CA will just update your account to "paid," (or a worse sounding TL) which has no impact towards changing your credit for the better. Not only that, it could actually make your credit score worse, because certain activity dates might be updated in the process. The only thing that will fix your credit, for the most part, is if the CA/OC/CRA's deletes the account from all the credit reports.

I paid off a very old debt from VZ that a CA just bought in a failed attempt to fix my credit. It updated to "paid collection" and the listing is still very much present on my credit reports. Now I'm out of options. Do not make the same mistake I made. Don't give them any money without a removal agreement.

Check out this forum for more information on how to proceed:

An ode to DKM!

Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the tune they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a love
She doesn't know the meaning of her sight
She's got a comment full of love
And sometimes when the game is on the line
Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from "Third Base" to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters showed up at the grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevey led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from "Third Base" to Huntington
They'd sing another victory song

Two! Three! Four!

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only
