View Full Version : What Speciality are you Interested in?
DoctaJay 04-25-2007, 02:23 PM I was just wondering what specialty folks here are leaning towards? Of course this could definitely change over the course of time but its nice to see. I'm interested in General Surgery. If I have time, and if it will help on the mission field (probably not) I might want to do a fellowship in MIS.
MarzMD 04-25-2007, 03:20 PM Emergency Medicine. I want a job in the medical field, not a life that revolves around medicine.
voltron77 04-25-2007, 04:03 PM Family Medicine or Pediatrics;)

socooltoo 04-26-2007, 12:47 AM I always loved working with my hands and also loved skeletons and muscle attachments even at a young age. By no means am I saying that I probably won't change my mind a thousand times while going throught rotations but right now, Ortho is where its at.

FlacoFlo 05-07-2007, 10:24 AM Anesthesia all the way baby!!!! I am happy to see we finally have a subsection for Latinos and African-americans on SDN!!! Up until now many of us have had to scrape and scrap our way through medical school with little to no mentoring. We def need to set up more networking to increase the numbers of underrepresented physicians in the US. Anyone interested in medicine or anesthesiology espescially, feel free to PM me!!

UVABranch 05-08-2007, 09:41 PM I would LOVE to do ortho and be the team physician for the Eagles...but, with plastics I can make enough money to pay for my BA, MPH, BA (or psot bac), and MD and still do some "probono" work, like helping kids who can't afford care. I'm also considering EM or ped hem/onc.

WisePrincess, you should PM OldBearProfessor and ask to join his Neonatology forum, especially if you might want to work in an academic setting. He's an academic neonatologist and really supportive of students.

kimiij 01-12-2008, 03:14 PM Either Family Medicine with a fellowship in Obstetrics or OB/GYN...
I was only thinking OB/GYN but then I realized that I have no interest in doing cesareans. I'd also like to actually work with families after those babies are born and be an advocate for breastfeeding, attachment parenting, etc. So, it just might be family medicine for me...
Doula-2-OB 01-12-2008, 03:34 PM Either Family Medicine with a fellowship in Obstetrics or OB/GYN...

:love::love::thumbup::thumbup:
This is the route I'm considering as well. I was going OB (hence the moniker):thumbup: until my cesarean 3 months ago. Yowza. I won't even get into that here, but suffice it to say that I find no excitement or potential for satisfaction in the idea of cutting into pregnant women and contributing to the ridiculous cesarean rate. Being an AP parent myself, I also like the idea of following families and supporting them (I can support mainstream parents too, no problem, but AP parents find a lot less support).
I had abandoned the idea of medicine after my daughter's birth just from the sheer trauma of everything, but I'm coming back to center now and trying to assess what I really want. I'm only 31, I've got plenty of time. :meanie:
abena301 01-14-2008, 11:19 PM I am only a freshman in college but I am definitely leaning to Ophthalmology right now- to me the eye is one of the coolest organs in the body. :cool:
Too bad it is apparently one of the more competitive residencies to match into- or so I've heard.
Alyani 01-15-2008, 03:19 PM i'm shocked that there isn't many of us here but count me in for NEUROLOGY!!
I'm glad to see someone else interested in neuro. There aren't too many at my school. The bright side is that it means less competition.
nycom914 01-28-2008, 10:43 PM Orthopaedic Surgery---> Spine :)
puchi 01-28-2008, 10:52 PM I picked Emergency Medicine. I was an EMT and it was the best job ever! I love the range of medical cases that you get in EM. Additionally Im also interested in Forensic Pathology. My dream is to be the medical examiner for NYC... (sigh) hehe.
SoFlaKnight 01-29-2008, 07:15 PM I feel deciding is gonna be the hardest part of Medical School, I'd ideally like something with direct patient contact...some ideas so far...

anya1207 03-07-2008, 07:57 PM I originally wanted to be a dermatologist, but then i realized the chances of that are slim.. i'm completely counting it out, but I will just have to wait to see what medical school is like for me next year... and i guess more importantly how i do on the boards.
My love right now is adolescent medicine :)
but now i'm also looking at gastroenterology.
Three completely different fields...
centersharpie 03-18-2008, 09:09 PM I was interested in neurosurgery, but after shadowing a neurosurgeon I find it a bit boring. I won't count it out completely though. Maybe it's because I'm observing and not really doing anything which is why its boring, but I do get a kick out of seeing the patients, so I might lean more towards internal medicine rather than surgery.
c.s.
alan06 03-19-2008, 12:08 PM I'm interested in family medicine or internal medicine. With family medicine, I can reach out to many patients with variety of diseases.
