HA! I *wish* I was on top of things like you are... Transcripts are in, recs are in, MCAT scores come in June 27th,... But my personal statement is such a struggle right now. I have most of the basic ideas written down, but it sounds like 10th grade English, and I'm a perfectionist, so... it'll be a while.

Hoping to submit by June 30th and maybe give myself a July 4th extension if necessary. *maybe*

My friends, wutwinb is the model URM applicant right now. I have no idea what her stats are, but when she applies, regardless of her stats (to a certain extent) she will get a ton an interviews. This is the big secret; if you apply and are complete this early, this process is MUCH MUCH less of a crapshoot than if you are complete in October. I know its hard to get stuff done, but I encourage everyone to save their time, money, and sleepless nights by simply applying early, giving themselves a peace of mind.

Good work QTCL13. Make sure that your turn around time for the secondaries is no longer than 2 weeks. This is prevent you from procrastination, which is so easy to do with those dreadful things.

What is early??

I have submitted my application to both AMCAS and AACOMAS...AACOMAS posted that they received my transcripts...but AMCAS still has not...they were sent on the same day...how long does it take for AMCAS to acknowledge and verify transcripts...and am I still considered early??

When I applied, I submitted my AMCAS app like June 15, and it took my app 3 1/2 to get verified. My friend submitted hers on June 22, and it took her 5 weeks to get verified. It all depends on when the rush of received transcripts and submitted AMCAS apps begins. If you are caught in the middle, it can take up to 5 weeks. But if you have yours in my now and are just waiting for verification, you are certainly doing alright and are pretty early.

Might be an "auto invite" but it's an invite so congratulations! It's one step closer to your goal. Pittsburgh is an interesting town with some nice areas; hope you enjoy winters.

My guess is that none of your LORs are going to say that you are an "axe murderer" so your invite is far from automatic. Congratulations!

Congrats on Pitt! From my experience last cycle, Pitt tends to have a very fast interview turn around. Both my friend and I got the invites the day after we submitted our secondaries, which was in early Nov. I believe it says in the MSAR that Pitt pre screens, so they may narrow down who they want to send secondaries to, but in any case, congrats on the interview!

Do them as fast as you possibly can. The sooner you get them in, the sooner you can start getting invites, and the sooner you'll get accepted. It sounds like you both will be very strong applicants anyway, but still, there is no better feeling than having your first acceptance on Oct. 15 (which is the earliest day of regular acceptance). I did my secondaries in the order received, unless one came in that wasn't very labor-intensive. (Some just gouge you for a little extra money and/or just want a form filled out without tons of essays.) If either of you is applying to Duke, here's fair warning that it's a doozy.

I agree with Q. You are going in the right direction but if you get held up with your secondaries and your LORs the process can be much more stressful and disappointing. Although it is challenging I would recommend no longer than a 3 day turn around on when you receive your 2ndary and when it is mailed with the check. Like Q said, having an acceptance on Oct. 15 is GREAT. I got one on Oct. 16 last year and the rest of my senior year was care free (lol, that can be a bad thing too :) )

I really appreciate the advice; I will definitely minimize the secondary turn around time. The only thing which could hold me back are my LORS, which will all be in by late August (waiting on my research PI).

Go ahead and submit the secondaries ASAP anyway. That way your files will be complete and ready to go as soon as your LORs arrive. Plus, since you're applying to 20+ schools (which I did also), you are in real danger of drowning in a secondary avalanche unless you keep up with them. It's kind of a feast or famine thing. One week I'd get nothing, and then the next week I'd get three or four of them all within the span of two days. :p

Go ahead and turn in everything that you can at this point. Your completed application will be a bit later but definitely not "late". Be sure to keep following up on your committee letters and packet. If necessary, since you have been getting a bit of "run around" since the end of June, drop an e-mail to the Dean and make note of the deadlines that you made but the pre-med committee did not.

Again, if you get everything done by first couple of weeks in August, you will be OK; just a bit later than the "early" folks. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear that its your committee letter thats holding you up. If all the schools are waiting for is your LOR, you are still at the tail end of applying early. I say that you really hound your committee letter writers so it can get sent out quickly. I don't think that you will be at so much of a disadvantage; even if the schools get your LOR by the beginning of August.

so I sent an email to my pre-health advisor directly and he said... he thinks i am in good shape if all they are waiting for are my LORs and comittee packet...the reason they are going to go out next week is because he wont be around for a week to sign the letters...he doesn't think I have to express mail them and that they should get them all by mid august...this is still upsetting to me but I don't know what else to do... lol thanks MSTPBound :). You have the most awesome ECs of all time. I think I am going to take kung fu this semester, any advice?

Depending on which style, I can offer more specific advice, but in general try this:

The Chinese characters for the term "kung fu" or "gung fu" roughly translate into something earned with a lot of "time and effort" - you might say that Tiger Woods has "kung fu" on the golf course, or Michael Jordan had great basketball "kung fu". Keep that in mind and you'll realize that the secret to mastery is the same as it is for everything else - Work hard, practice constantly, stay focused and NEVER, EVER, EVER give up.

Thanks to kung fu, I found organic chemistry, physics and calculus all remarkably easy  - so my guess is you'll do quite well. ;)

I apologize if you've already told your story and I just missed it, but I don't understand why you're applying right now if you already know that your GPA and MCAT are too low to allow you to be a competitive applicant. There are ways to raise low numbers, and it might be worth the time and effort to do it if it would greatly increase your chances of being a successful applicant. Have you considered taking a couple of years off to take extra classes and boost your GPA, then retaking the MCAT so that you can apply with stronger numbers?

I actually did take some post bacc classes to raise my GPA....I actually did well. I also got my masters in sci education and graduated with a 3.9. The reason why I wrote that is because I just assumed Medical schools would only focus on my undergrad GPA....Hopefully they look at the whole package......

You'll probably hear from Morehosue and Meharry pretty soon though because their secondary is online, and they are pretty organized (primariliy Morehouse though).

How long did it take you to hear back from morehouse and meharry, and how did they notify you....by mail or email or website.....

im a URM (native american) resident of Missouri. I applied to University of Nebraska and got an interview invite. After the interview invite I found out that my Indian Tribe makes me eligible for residency status in the State of Nebraska

I am pretty confident about my chances here (8PS,10BS,11V=29R and 3.63GPA)

Any reason to not be, especially now that I am an in-stater?

Good luck everyone
Blake

I think that the first rule in applying to medical school is to not be overly confident about your chances of acceptance. 4.0 students with 39 MCAT scores haven't gotten accepted to Harvard and JHU before. Its about you as a "whole" applicant, with grades, MCAT, ECs, etc. factored in. With that being said, instate residency just help, because most state medical schools have to reach a certain quota of interviewed and accepted instate students. I would say that you are competitive for the school, but things can always get weird when its time to apply, so stay prayerful.

How long did it take you to hear back from morehouse and meharry, and how did they notify you....by mail or email or website.....

I can't remember exactly when I got notification of a secondary or interview from those schools, but I do remember that I interviewed at Morehouse in October and at Meharry in November.

Hey guys how's it going? I'm still waiting to be verified! :scared: I feel like I am so late in the process but I'm not going to worry anymore. I have received a secondary in my portfolio and just waiting for the others to arrive. I got one secondary and I've been trying to work on it and waiting on my MCAT score from 8/9. :( It's all good thoug!!

When did you submit? You aren't really that late, especially if you have all of your secondaries in by Sept. 15. (that date isn't really set, but the earlier the better)

sistahnik

I submitted 8/6 and all transcripts were received by early July so that isn't an issue. How will all my secondaries be in by Sept. 15 if I haven't received most of them yet? Just trying to get as much info as possible. I guess if I do them as they come in it could be done, I mean anything can be accomplished with effort.

Hey sistahnik, to how many schools are you applying? I predict that you will be verified somewhere in the week of August 27, assuming your transcripts were in before you submitted (I wouldn't put money on my prediction though, knowing how AMCAS can be...lol). Supposing you're verified by labor day, and that you've been working on some secondary essays while waiting, you can submit a lot before Sept 15th. I was verified on 8/2, and finished 10 applications by 8/15 (and I hadn't been working on any while waiting for verification).

All of my transcripts were def in and marked as received before I submitted. I'm going to start working on those 2ndaries that I can access. I tried to access Meharry's but you have to create an account. Is this ok to do now? So far I applied to 12 schools, but plan to add about 5 more.

I finished 10 of 18 secondaries (haven't received 3 of the 18), but over the past week I have barely accomplished anything... I think I'm starting to experience secondary burnout . Some of the remaining schools are top choices, so I need to get on this, for real!

On a positive note, I did receive some sort of auto-invite from Michigan. :D
I say sort of because I hadn't yet turned in my secondary or LOR's, but at the same time I received it 15 days after I got the secondary, which leads me to believe that they reviewed the rest of my AMCAS app.

Hey everybody!

Just a status update from me, as well. I submitted 10 applications and have received 5 so far. All 5 secondaries have been returned and I'm tired....

Not really tired, but this application business really brings out the true madness to this "organized system" we call medical education. I am hoping to be graced with the rest of my secondaires, but I also realize that I was only verified 13 days ago and I added schools a week after being verified. So, I am not too worried. I wish everyone the best and hope to be hearing soon about everyone's interviews!

Likewise! I have 4 more to do, and haven't received 3 others... I'm hoping my burnout doesn't lead to haphazardly done secondaries... But I really don't want to spend TOO much more time on secondaries, as I'd like to have sufficient time to prepare for my Michigan interview.

Speaking of my interview, what are you guys doing to prepare for interviews? I feel like mine came so suddenly that I'm confused because I'm still in secondary mode..

Lol, you should go ahead and applied to all the schools u applied to with your 4 LORs. For alot of schools, 3 is quite enough. As long as you have 2 science prof LORs, and 1 non-science prof LOR, u should be straight. Don't delay your app if that last LOR isn't all that important. But you truly are on track right now. you just need to return those secondaries in light speed to beat the fall app rush.

Oh ok, I have been curious about that for a while now. Thanks DoctaJay.

Anyways, quick rant session! I was all worried about my stuff being completed "late" at the schools I'm applying to because of my august mcat scores (to be released on the 19th). But the way things are going, thats the least of my troubles. I asked one of my professors from the bio dept. to write me a recommendation in MAY! She has been very hard to contact since then, and has been telling me that she sent her stuff out since last month. So far, not one of the 11 schools I am applying to has recieved a letter from her. WTF! And then when I asked her to forward one to virtualevals, she acted like she wanted to send all of the indivdual letters herself. But she finally agreed to do it and that was weeks ago. Still not sign of a letter. My other three letter writers sent theirs in a looong time ago and all the schools plus interfolio have had them for a long time.

So now I am stuck asking for another science rec. from the core lab professor. She knows me pretty well but I feel bad about asking her so last minute. Hopefully she will write it for me though. I am really worried... Is it ok to stalk a professor? Because I feel like there is a reason she is trying to sabotage me and her letter would be worthless anyways...+pissed+

Congrats on all of the interviews, everyone! If you guys haven't found it yet, there's a very nice interview feedback feature on SDN that you should check out. Just pick the school where your interview is, and you will see what previous interviewees experienced and some of the questions they got asked. This part of SDN was a huge help for me a couple of years ago when I was interviewing; I often had already had a chance to think about every single question the interviewers asked me, even the oddball ones. :luck: to everyone. :)

I stayed at the President's inn, i woudln't call it good...i got stuck in a smoking room because they gave away my reservation, the wallpaper was peeling off, there were a couple of holes in the wall in my room...but it was cheap. The only reason i had such a problem was that there was a 50,000 person convention in the area...if you look now all the best western/red roof inn type places should have openings. Although my arrangements weren't optimal, it was a place to stay and i was fine. The Howard day was great, and it is a really comfortable place to be, hopefully you will enjoy it as much as i did.

I just had my first interview on Friday and it went very well from my standpoint (what the interviewers thought of me could be a completely different story). I am starting to receive a fair amount of interviews myself - this is starting to get extremely expensive, no ? Here's to an acceptance on (or near) Oct 15th!

Should I really send thank you notes to all of my interviewers??? and how long after the interview do I send them? and what if don't know their names...do I send none at all?? or do I simply address it to the admissions office?? or do I call to find out?? but it has to look bad if I forgot their names...

Its advised that you do send to all of your interviewers. I know I started to get lazy at the end of my interview cycle with the thank you cards, but its a good thing to do. As soon as you finish your interview, you ask your interviewer for their card. Their card should have their mailing address. Sometimes its advised that you send an e-mail immediately, and then follow up with the thank-you card. I just sent the thank you card.

I agree with DoctaJay. What I have been doing is sending the thank you notes to the interviewer, care of the admissions office. I'm sure the interviewers are in and out of the office frequently during the cycle so I figure in absence of a direct address or office number, this is the best way to get the note to them. So for example:

Dr. Whoever, Faculty Interviewer
c/o Office of Admissions
so on and so forth

Really?? this is all my mom wants to hear about. She even has 10/15 marked up on her calendar. On Sunday when I woke up, she said "15 more days!" As if I didn't have enough anxiety already....

But congrats on your second acceptance! And I second what QTCL said about how she sent her thank you notes. I, on the other hand, wasted an hour and a half trying to search school websites for my interviewers addresses before realizing I should just do it c/o Office of Admissions.

Hey,
Is anyone else getting sick of hearing that they only have interviews because they are a URM? as though the rest of your application has nothing to do with it and you don't deserve it? and people saying (and i actually quote) "look at my mdapps, if i were a URM i'd be cleaning up with interviews!!" even though really they have no idea because there is no way to tell how much it actually impacts any individual decision on an interview invite??? ahhh i'm really just letting people get to me and I know i shouldn't but it's hard not to when you hear things like this your whole life. it's not enough to make me doubt myself right now, just enough to make me angry. I am trying to be proud of myself and happy because i have gotten so many interviews, and when people ask for encouragement asking if peopel with my gpa have gotten interviews i try to give them that encouragement, and i get attacked. People are so dumb, they keep asking me "if you don't think it matters that much, then why did you apply URM?" as though that was an option, to apply urm, when all i did was check the checkboxes that asked me my ethinicities. Was i supposed to lie and put white to make them happy? AHHHHHHH okay i'm sorry about my rant, i'm done now, i just needed to get it out before my biochem exam. Calming down. Thanks for any of you that actually read this.

HAH. It seems that the new month has brought in lots of angst on SDN. I definitely know what you're talking about. I've dealt with this since high school, so it's nothing new to me. I went to a nationally known high school where tons of people apply to ivies, so you KNOW I got some ish when I was accepted. (aaj, you should friend me on facebook if you're on it, I wrote a whole long note on this...)

Quite frankly, I don't care at all HOW I got my invites, as long as I HAVE invites, but it seems that I'm supposed to feel bad about 'taking these invites away from someone else.' Whatever. I don't feel bad about getting invites. I'm proud of how far I've come over the years. A few years ago, so much was going on in my life that I wasn't even sure I'd be able to apply to med school, or even be able to go to school the next semester. Given all the mysteriousness associated with med school admissions offices, there is NO point in me trying to guess what was going through the adcom's mind, and there is NO point in anyone else trying to guess either. However, if I didn't have invites, I could see how I'd be trying to analyze why so-and-so got an invite and not me. (BUT I wouldn't be focusing on one ethnic group; I'd be looking at everyone who got invites at the schools I'm interested in). So let's hope these people get invites soon... it may steer them away from focusing on ours.

I can't tell you how many times I've written the phrase "There is no such thing as a URM checkbox on AMCAS." But no one seems to get it! And people don't seem to realize that even if you don't check a race category, many secondaries still require a picture... and even if you're light skinned, it's usually pretty obvious.

So in summary, DO NOT feel bad about your invites. What I have to say next is rather unfortunate: I actually suggest that you don't try to give people encouragement about invites because, unfortunately, no good deed goes unpunished.

P.S.: You're awesome! hahaha

Your reaction is totally understandable. You should just be aware of 2 things: 1) that your race may have helped you get those interviews and 2) you shouldn't be ashamed to take advantage of everything that's offered to you in order to secure your dream. Those people's beef is with med schools and their policy of AA. They shouldn't be taking out their anger on you.

Word. People look at GPA and MCAT and assume that those are the sole criteria that determine the strength of an applicant. They completely disregard the personal statement, the secondary essays, the letters of recs, major, courseload and personal qualities that distinguish an applicant and makes them unique. And it's upsetting because they completely write off your other accomplishments and base your success solely on pigment. That's ridiculous. But whatever. I won't even trip. This is just more motivation for me to light it up in med school. Congrats on your success and keep doing what you do.

When i first joined SDN I got into alot of heated arguments over AA and how qualified we were for medical school, etc. I really encourage you all not to be drawn into these conversations. In medical school, everyone starts from square 1:

-20 people (from last year's class) had to repeat their 1st year at LLU (not common, but it happened). None of them were URMs.
- I along with most of the URMs in our class scored higher than the class average on almost every test we took our in our first test block.

I say these things not to boast but to encourage you all that if you are accepted, YOU CAN MAKE IT, and not only that, but you CAN EXCEL. Don't get into petty discussions about AA, especially on SDN.

Yeah man, I feel you. See, I'm not trying to get involved in the AA debates. I just have a problem with people that assume my success is because of my skin color when they don't know ANYTHING about me. They couldn't tell you where I grew up, how I grew up, my political views, or the most important question, why I want to be a doctor. They know nothing about me, yet the only thing they think they know is that i'm a product of AA. That's upsetting. It's pitiful how prejudice some people are on here.

I challenge anyone on this site who thinks my melanin was key to me getting interview invites to read my personal statement and/or autobiographical sketch, and then form their opinion. I'm damn sure most if not all of them will change their minds. And I'm not even mentioning my letters of rec (one from the Chair of the California State Assembly Committee on Health) research presentations/conferences, etc.

Thank you so much everyone for the replies!!! I feel much better today. It's so funny how critical people are on SDN because they are so insecure. A while ago, someone posted asking whether or not it was okay to write about their queer identity in an application and people berated them telling them that there was no need, it was never appropriate, etc. One person, who i won't name even though they drive me crazy, specifically wrote "yeah you should write about it, that way you're less competition and i get more interviews". I applied to a couple of the same schools as that person, and on those applications i was very out, writing about queer rights activism i've done over the past few years...and i got an interview at every single one of those schools, and that person still has not gotten a single one at those schools, and only one MD interview overall. I find it so strange that these are the people who are judging me, criticizing me when i try to give them encouragement, even though they clearly know so little about the admissions procedure themselves; we're all premeds, we're all in the same boat, and i hate how people assume that they know for sure what will and won't get someone else in.
Anyway back to the point of this post, thank you guys!!! i'm pretty sure the underrepresented in healthcare forum is the only one i've ever enjoyed reading in sdn. everyone here is much more down to earth and non-judgemental, and i appreciate all of you. have a nice afternoon and i'm wishing you all lots of luck.

Hon, your MCAT puts you in the top 5% of all test-takers. I don't think you need to worry about a few anonymous malcontents ranting on SDN that you're only getting invites because you're black. Just let it roll off you, and keep doing great things. :luck:

Yeah you're right. I used to be drawn in to the stuipidity, but now I realize a lot of peopl eon here are just frustrated by their own inadequacies. (It was the same with undergrad admissions.)

Its just kind of funny when you look at how many URM are in healthcare...puts it into context...there just arent that many.

I just hope that I get into a school where my future classmates are tolerant!

I just got an email that totally stressed me out from howard lol.
THIS IS TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOUR FOLDER WILL BE GOING TO THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE ON THURSDAY MORNING. (OCTOBER 11)

IF THE COMMITTEE DECIDES TO ACT ON YOUR FOLDER AT THIS TIME, YOU CAN EXPECT A LETTER TO BE GENERATED ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 15.

BEST OF LUCK,

JUDITH WALK
DIRECTOR

while i appreciate them keeping us informed, knowing the exact time they are going to be talking about me and making decisions regarding my entire future makes it the only thing i will be ablew to think about. i know that there is nothing i can do at this point to change the outcome, but that won't stop me from thinking about it. haha i love that someone tries to be nice and inform us, we all think we want to know every step an adcom takes, and then they tell us, and well i don't know about you guys, but i think it drove me crazier. good luck to anyone else who got this.
