View Full Version : Just Took the DAT - May 19th
Mia305 05-19-2007, 03:38 PM It's finallyyyyyy done... here are the scores plus my opinions on each section
Bio = 19 (78.2%)... I actually thought I did much worse than this. The straightforward questions were exactly that, easy and straightforward. But then came the 6-8 out of left field questions that I had no clue what they were talking about. So as long as you know the basics you should be good to go. I don't think there is anything that can fully prepare you for the randoms, except you just happening to know it.
Gen chem = 22 (89.5%)...Almost no calculations at all. I think I did maybe 2 basic calculations the entire time. Very straightforward.
Orgo = 21 (87.6%)...Again surprisingly straightforward. I was getting 17s and 18s on topscore, but there were really no tricks on this one.
Quantitative = 20 (87.3%)...Surprisingly easy compared to all the horror stories I have heard. The calculations were fairly basic. The only problem is time! I had to guess on about 4 or so due to time running out.
Reading = 21 (80.1%)....MY SUGGESTION- DO NOT READ THE PASSAGES! I started doing this on the very first passage and found it to be a complete waste of time. I definitely recommend reading the question and then scrolling through the passage for the answer.
PAT = 17 :( (52.4%):(:(... My one real disappointment, especially since I thought I had done better than that. However, it was definitely harder than what I had practiced on. Keyhole and Top-front-end were not hard. angles were slightly difficult, just go with your gut. Hole punching was muchhh harder than the practice ones. I basically never missed a practice hole punch question. There were some crazyyyy folds on the real one though. I had quite a few guesses here. Cube counting was straightforward. Folding was mixed, harder than what I had practiced on though.
Total Science = 20 (85.8%)... Academic Average = 21 (91.5%)
Overall I am happy, it's just that one PAT section that is hurting me. And since I am sure you will be asking, I prepared using TopScore and I took the Kaplan course. I also have a 3.92 overall GPA and 3.82 sGPA, to go with all the research, shadowing, and extra curric. stuff.
So if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post and I will do my best to answer. It's good to be done!
Awuah29 05-19-2007, 03:47 PM Heh Mia,
Congratulations  :hardy:
Quantititave: Is destroyer, archiever and topscore for this part really enough to use as study tools. Also, what was your approach, did you solved the wordproblems first, because you said you had to guess on couple of them.
Great scores you are definitely in!! What schools do you plan on applying to?
apaul 05-19-2007, 03:52 PM congrats, you just earned yourself a seat in dental school. enjoy!

I have not used destroyer and achiever so I can't comment on those, but I thought TopScore was fairly equivalent in difficulty to the real thing. My approach was simple, go through each question and if I could immediately work it out, whether it was a word problem or not, I worked on it. The only ones I skipped along the way were ones that may have taken some more time or a couple random trig problems that I was not familiar with. The ones I ran out of time on I prob would have guessed on no matter what because they were trig questions and that was my worst area. But as long as you are good at setting up algebraic equations based on word problems, you should not really have a problem. I hope this helps.
laundry 05-19-2007, 03:53 PM    WAAAY TO GO, Mia.
A couple of questions if you don't mind:
1. On the QR, were the word problems geared towards finding patterns in numbers? Also, is the trig really as hard as some others were saying?
2. Do you think the Blue book and old science notes enough for Science section?
3. Any suggestions on PAT? I think we're the same level there.
Again, Congrats! :hardy:

Thanks I sure hope so. I am applying to about 16 schools. I go to UF so that is obviously on the list. But I am also applying to Nova, Maryland, Tufts, NYU, Temple, BU, Buffalo, and the Ivy league schools (although those may be a reach with the 17), along with a couple of other state schools.

1) I think its just reading the problem and setting up an algebraic equation based on that problem. None were really too difficult in my opinion. Just read, and set it up. Trig is fine is you know the basics. I think I had one or 2 that I wasn't sure of.
2) If the Blue Book is the same as the one that comes wihen you buy the course, then that is all I used. That along with TopScore I felt actually was enough. The only science questions I had problems with were the totally random Bio ones.
3) For the PAT- I was usually in the 20-21 range and finished with time to spare. I actually ran out of time on the real one. The hole punches were muchhh harder than any Kaplan practice, and the Kaplan angles are a joke. Try and find as many other sources as you can that have PAT and just PRACTICE!..I thought I would at least be able to get into the 19-20 range, but I guess not.
laundry 05-19-2007, 04:05 PM thanks a lot! that really helps!
thebluebmw 05-19-2007, 05:24 PM I really appreciate your advice, can you please post up your Topscore break down for all 3 tests. Thanks

thebluebmw 05-20-2007, 12:16 AM Thanks!!! Great Job Once Again
ddstobe 05-20-2007, 02:17 PM congrats, Mia.
IndianaAsh 05-20-2007, 05:20 PM Great job Mia! Impressive numbers. Though, it was interesting to me what percentile you were in. I found my scores from June 12, 2006, and although my numbers were lower in many cases, my percentiles were higher. Here were mine: PAT 24 (99.8%), QR 18 (78.1%), RC 22 (91.7%), BIO 18 (83.7%), Gen Ch 20 (88.1%), Orgo 21 (93.9%), TS 20 (93.1%), AA 20 (92.6%). Strange, huh? I'm glad I'm already in because it seems like even Total Science and Academic Average scores in the 20s are become more common and therefore less competitive. Regardless, your GPA is great and you shouldn't have a problem getting in. Good luck, maybe I'll see you at Temple in the future!!

I know what you mean. I actually was surprised when I saw my percentiles also as I thought they would have been higher with 20+ scores. I guess that means the competition has just gotten a little tougher.
xdianaax 05-20-2007, 09:28 PM Congrats those are some solid scores!

different versions of the test have different percentages depending on the difficulty of that version and the people taking it...i'm sure you are aware of this. competition increases every year, but you wouldn't see that large of a jump...which is why those percentages are very interesting. in the end, the percentages don't matter, as your scores are going to be compared with those whose percentages were higher but recieved the same raw score
congrats
