I volunteered at a community clinic as a patient educator/counselor for 3 years, and then at the hospital, and was able to talk/interact with various doctors at both places. However, I've never done the whole "follow the doc around all day like a stalker" thing. Do I really need to? I could ask my FP, he seems very nice, but I just don't wanna bother him, to be honest. Just finished my EK for the day, moving on to review blood/blood coag for a&p tues, then do some physics and genetics reading. jochi1543 06-03-2007, 01:25 PM I'm toiling on my orgo lab reports. So how's A&P so far then, not too bad, it seems? I'll be registering for it shortly...as soon as my dad's wire comes in. I don't think I'll be taking out more student loans, just ask him to pay tuition. It's pretty low around here, like $500 CAD per class, and one of mine is a retake (dropped it last year after getting too overwhelmed), so it's $150 less for that one. But I can't wait to go full-time so I can send an update to my student loan companies and tell them I won't be paying sh!t for like 10 months.:meanie: :meanie: :meanie: olemissbabydoc 06-03-2007, 02:18 PM So how's A&P so far then, not too bad, it seems? My undergrad charged $750 per credit hour. I had a 40% or so scholarship though, so that brought it down to about $400-450. That's why I graduated first and THEN went on to finish my premed coursework - I HAD to graduate in 4 years, because otherwise I'd lose my scholarship and tuition would spin out of control. Taking the upper levels at the university so the adcoms will know i'm capable, but being as non-stuped (monetarily) as possible. olemissbabydoc 06-03-2007, 03:54 PM Chicken & cheese quesadillas for dinner. yummy!! jochi1543 06-03-2007, 04:03 PM Chicken & cheese quesadillas for dinner. yummy!! Oh well, at least I've got a can of ice cold Diet Pepsi to console me.:meanie: 6 reports all done (just waiting to hear back from my instructor about some minor things), and the other 3 are halfway done, so things are looking good. After the fire drill everyone was heading back in... and they all ended up getting stuck in the elevator, for a half and hour... with like 15 people... and it was really hot... he is sort of clausterphobic (as I think anyone would be in that situation)... I applied and was accepted to UAB last year, but I'm a U of A alum and a former AL state resident, so I had really strong ties to the state. I'm considered instate for USA in some programs (not NECESSARILY med school, but they do look at us first) b/c my home county is one over from Mobile.. it's about 30 mins. USA would be my #1, but I'll probably end up at UMC. If I waited til next year, my MCAT would probably be good enough for UAB, but I just don't want to wait if I dont have to.. (long story, postbacc instead of traditional pre med, took first MCAT w/ one out of the 8 prereqs and taught myself the rest, will have half of them done in august and feel much better already about it, but of course without having all the phys and orgo there's no way my mcat will be at my highest potential). I have one more year of pre-reqs and upper levels, i'll do two if I HAVE to, but I really want to go next year, and if I can gain about 3-4 pts on my MCAT i'll feel decent about it. olemissbabydoc 06-03-2007, 08:10 PM OMG! So, is that the plan in case you don't get in, just another full year of post-bacc? I haven't decided yet. I'm prepping for reapplication this fall (think ahead! :meanie:), but I don't yet know what to do next year in case I don't get in - I'd be applying to the Caribbean in the next cycle, as well, so I will not be preparing for a 3rd cycle - would rather go to the Caribs. However, I don't know what to do for a year....a master's doesn't sound very enticing. And neither does work, especially around these parts, since it's a small town with limited opportunities, particularly because there's a university here, so tons of recent grads with little work experience, just like me. And I don't want to move. I guess an online master's is the only option. Yeah, considering I've only had one year of sciences, I'll continue taking some more upper levels (some fun things I can't fit in this year) and focus on my master's degree more heavily... i'm only taking one grad class a trimester this year. I really don't WANT a plan.. i'm "planning" on kicking some MCAT ***** in 66 days and getting in this year  (i only want 3-5 points, and I KNOW i can do that...) PBandJ 06-03-2007, 08:19 PM It depends on how math-phobic you are. If you are good at math, it's fine. Ditto for p. chem. I didn't understand a thing, but I did mad work acing the tests because I could set up the matrices and solve for the eigenvalues. I suffered through one semester of inorganic (boring) so that I could take a semester of bioinorganic. That covers how your body uses transition metals. It was awesome, worth taking the semester of inorganic. aww, man i should have totally taken that class! i LOVE that kind of linear algebra / diff eq stuff. Lower division linear algebra was easy, upper division was definitely more challenging. It uses a lot of matrices (if you've never done math with matrices, they are totally freaking cool). It has a lot to do with vectors, and vector spaces and using transformations of those vectors in those spaces. Kind of hard to explain. Then I could put "Jochi1543, BA, BS, MD" on my office door in the future. Go for it! :D I ended up getting two degrees because otherwise I would have been out in 3 years and I wanted to use all my scholarship money :meanie: Anastasis 06-04-2007, 07:43 AM  me too! :scared: What to move to the beach with me and sell hemp jewelry for a living? :meanie: DrBowtie 06-04-2007, 07:44 AM What to move to the beach with me and sell hemp jewelry for a living? :meanie: :shakes head in disapproval: Anastasis 06-04-2007, 07:54 AM :shakes head in disapproval: Watch it now - you know I *am* voting in the Republican primary this cycle... ;) Funky 06-04-2007, 08:19 AM AMCAS finally received my transcript. Funky 06-04-2007, 09:13 AM Question: For your AMCAS PS did any of you not indent - just put everything in as one big paragraph to maximize character space???? My PS wasn't that long. But I'm sure if you don't indent, it wont make that big of a deal. Dr Durden 06-04-2007, 09:36 AM Question: For your AMCAS PS did any of you not indent - just put everything in as one big paragraph to maximize character space???? I didn't indent, I just hit enter twice after a paragraph ended so there was a blank line. But this was back in the Dark Ages of AMCAS too.... My friend finally found my old advisor's e-mail address....she taught me in like 6 classes and supervised my senior thesis, so I was going to request a LOR from her, since some schools want letters from profs in your major. She left our school to go get a PhD elsewhere, so I couldn't find her contact info anywhere... Gonna shoot the e-mail in a few. "Uh, so, can you do me a favor..again!?" LOL.:laugh: oxeye 06-04-2007, 10:10 AM I didn't indent, I just hit enter twice after a paragraph ended so there was a blank line. But this was back in the Dark Ages of AMCAS too.... I did Orgo (labs and all) in less than 1.5 months! 1.5 months on the calendar, but I spent 2 of those weeks in NYC and Minneapolis, shopping and tripping balls, so those 2 weeks didn't really count - I read less than a chapter during that time. Haha, sweet. Just got into a pissing match with my stepfather....he decided to call me and offer his "advice" re: my resignation - more like, call me and scream stupid crap at me w/o knowing anything about the situation. Every single person who has listened to me rant about this job for the last 2 months has agreed with me that quitting was the best decision, I'm not just talking about those friends who've never held a full-time job - my old boss (from several jobs ago) who I'm still good friends with agreed with me completely. But of course my stepfather knows best! The best part of it is that he totally misses the fact that my monthly paycheck there has been less than $800 lately, so it's not like this job was my main source of income - he has all these visions of me starving under the bridge now. Well, I'll eat out less, that's true, and won't buy useless trinkets, but that's about it. Anyway, he wouldn't shut up and kept screaming, so I threw my cellphone at the wall. God, I've got such a short fuse these days, it's not even funny - and I KNOW that my job is to blame for all of it.:thumbdown Shoulda quit it 2 months ago! scotties123 06-04-2007, 12:18 PM i just saw some interesting videos about emos on youtube. Was up awfully late last night doing chem, so it's naptime here. Then resuming the excitement. In other news (to add to the throwing cellphone woes around here), my phone's being stupid and hoarding text messages for hours, then delivering them all at once. Suppose its time to start looking for a new one. gujuDoc 06-04-2007, 12:48 PM Hola! What's a summer plan? It's GenChemII and A&PII here...:laugh: Did you end up getting your MCAT scores back? Are you applying this year for med school? Good luck with all that. i went to India for 15 days or so. Well more like 18 if you include the flight time to and from India. It was interesting to say the least to be back after a period of 13 years. A lot has changed especally in the city of Mumbai. there was a time when I'd walk the streets of Mumbai in 1994 with my parents and be scared to go anywhere alone cuz you'd see beggers everywhere along the roads and everything was so polluted and the roads were dirt roads with no proper traffic regulation. But how all that has changed now is amazing. Now it is more like a NYC or other major American or English city like London. Better roads and traffic regulations, less beggars, and since globalization is taking stock everywhere there are tons of the bigname European stores like Lord and Taylor, Catwalk, etc. There was even a LLadro store somewhere there. Restaurants have changed too. Now you get everything instead of just indian restaurants plus some of the big chains in America are there. The other place where my family has changed a lot but yet not so much at the same time on another level. But Mumbai is the place to go if you are a westerner going to India and want to see one of the more modern and developed parts of india much less one of the more liberal areas where mixed marriages are more common and people are more career oriented rather then about fitting into traditional indian roles and so forth. I once hated mumbai with a passion but this time it grew on me. Even the airport before wasn't air conditioned or high tech but now they are going modern too and really renovating the whole place. But I'm glad to be back cuz Fl. is still home as far as I'm concerned. olemissbabydoc 06-04-2007, 12:50 PM Did you end up getting your MCAT scores back? Are you applying this year for med school? I'm studying about 4-6 hours a day, and understanding a LOT more than I did just two weeks ago, so things should be good in 65 days. I'm applying this cycle anyway, if I can get between 3-5 point increase on the MCAT i've got a great shot at my state school (and there's NO reason I can't do that). |
