View Full Version : Interviews and rejections
Likar 09-07-2007, 11:22 AM Hey,
I know it's quite early, but I just got my first rejection from BU even w/o notification of receiving my application!!!! They are fast or perhaps I am that bad!!!!!! Anybody else interviews or rejection?
Just curious which schools are on the roll!!!!!
Have fun:luck:
Welcome to the forum!
Don't feel bad. BU was my first rejection as well when I applied in 2004 and now I am in the middle of my 3rd year.
Good luck.
red rose 09-07-2007, 02:37 PM Hi guys
I guess that will be the forum of our upcoming interviews. I am sorry to hear about your rejection.
On the other had I am very happy because BU sent me an invite for an interview. Yeeeeee :) I was very excited and it was totally unexpected since it is still very early.
BU 9/4 via e-mail
Northwestern postmarked 8/27. :/
indytx 09-07-2007, 06:44 PM yeah don't feel bad - BU was also my first rejection last yr and i matched at a program i'm very happy with. BU probably screens apps based on the likelihood you will actually wind up matching there (over/underqualified, geographic bias, etc)
FernandoV 09-08-2007, 09:12 AM I also recently got the axe from BU. I wasn't really expecting straight out rejections so early.
I also had a question. I have also received a few emails from programs acknowledging receipt of my app and requesting additional info from me (i.e. asking me to send a photo, hardcopy of CV, an additional short paragraph detailing my interest in the program, etc.) Does anyone know if I should take this as a sign I may get an interview (i.e. they don't ask all applicants to do this) or do these types of programs ask all applicants for this info?
Thanks guys.
Are you referring to Bascom and Irvine?
rubensan 09-08-2007, 12:09 PM I also had a question. there are a few programs that routinely ask for additional information (CV, photo, eye exam and even $35) to further "complete your file" upon receipt of your application.
FernandoV 09-08-2007, 12:15 PM Are you referring to Bascom and Irvine?
Actually, yes, Irvine was one of them. Is there an inside joke about this or something (referring to the laugh)?
indytx 09-09-2007, 07:29 AM I also recently got the axe from BU. I wasn't really expecting straight out rejections so early.

Irvine and USCD stick out in my mind as places that asked for extra money/info but never gave me an interview. Lots of programs will ask for you to send a photo and have no intention of ever interviewing you...they are likely screening based on appearance which is pretty shady if you ask me. But I guess with so few residents per program and so few interview spots they need to make sure they're not getting marilyn manson...
what do you write in those little statements about why program xyz?
DOapplicant 09-10-2007, 03:46 PM Boston University shot me down as well.
Rush sent me an email stating that my application is complete- i'm guessing they prob put me on the wait list.
Congrats to those already recieving invitations.
red rose 09-12-2007, 05:54 PM Hi guys
It has been quite here.
I got an invite today from U of Rochester. I am very excited.
Enjoy your evening :)
vtrain 09-12-2007, 09:10 PM UT San Antonio shot out an email toady and asked for an eye exam to be sent in
Mye Eye 09-18-2007, 12:30 PM got my second interview today!!!
University of Oklahoma!!! :)
also did my courtesy interview at USC - Doheny when I did a visiting medical student rotation there (they do it for all visiting med students...a really nice courtesy to be honest)
ophthoapplicant 09-18-2007, 01:26 PM Hey guys,
For those who heard about interviews, first off, congratulations.
I'd also like to ask a question- if you post an interview, could you put down how you heard (phone, email, letter) and if possible, to put in the available dates that were offered (many of which are not available online or are outdated)? Looking at last year's forum, they did this and both seemed like very helpful info.
Thanks!
Mye Eye 09-18-2007, 06:56 PM sure thing
University of Oklahoma - Nov 19, Nov 26, Dec 10 via EMAIL
FernandoV 09-20-2007, 12:34 PM I thought I would've gotten more responses from programs by now (I had my app in around August 14th!) and as of now I only have heard of 1 rejection (BU) and ZERO interviews.
I am hearing from other students in the REGULAR match that have received MULTIPLE interviews already. I thought ophtho, being early, would've been sending info already.
Does anyone have any idea when we should start hearing something (even a rejection at this point would be satisfying)?
Mye Eye 09-20-2007, 01:06 PM i heard similar stories from a lot of people in years past...they didnt start hearin til october for a lot of programs...i dont know if it's because they want to have all their information together before deciding on which ppl they want to interview, or what it is...
anyways, yeah i've only received one interview as of yet...no rejections...and 4 schools asking for supplemental information
anyone else have thoughts on this?
good luck everyone and hope to see a lot of you on the interview trail
oct and nov are when it gets busy. i had 2 interviews by the end of sept last year so it sounds like things are the same this year. good luck

UC Irvine (CV, Photo and any supplemental info you choose)

taehong81 09-20-2007, 06:19 PM On the same boat here. I also submitted my application in the middle of august. Only received one interview offer and one rejection and still waiting for the rest.

Likar 09-20-2007, 07:55 PM Hey,
Got phone call today from Loyola!!!! Interview dates are Nov 1st and 2nd
I also called several schools looking for inspiration and
Northwestern is reviewing applications currently up to their deadline Oct 1st...but if i am a "maybe", won't hear from them for a while:-(
Yale will be sending out mail offers next week.
U Wisconsin reviews 100 applications a week started this week...I am in the second batch, so I was told that will hear from them by the end of next week if rejected or interview and whenever if end up in a maybe pile.
Huve Fun:luck:
For anyone who cares- Wilmer will be sending out interviews either tonight or by Monday the latest. It will be an e-mail (I think).
For those of you who decide to come, I am in charge of hospital and satellite location tours this year. The bus has been ordered. We'll have fun.
Good luck!
FernandoV 09-21-2007, 09:16 AM What progs asked for supplemental stuff?
I also just got a request from Temple asking for a photo and CV.

Will they send outright rejections as well? Or do u just assume that if you don't hear anything?
twintiger32 09-22-2007, 12:23 AM good luck to you all...i haven't gotten any invites yet. in fact, only program i've got a decision from was BU, which was a rejection.
lizzylu 09-22-2007, 09:13 AM Hi all,
Received interviews from:
- Northwestern, email, Nov 30th was the only day offered

DOCTORSAIB 09-22-2007, 12:49 PM Hi all,

Programs are sending TEXT messages! haha.
Does the PD have a Myspace/Facebook account by any chance?
lizzylu 09-22-2007, 11:15 PM U of Florida, Gainesville has sent invites: snail-mail, dates (Dec 3,7,10,14)
rubyshoes 09-23-2007, 10:32 AM Hey guys,
Rochester's interview dates are Oct 5, Oct 19, Nov 5 and Nov 16.
I heard by email.
Best of luck!
Do majority of programs send out rejections or is silence considered a rejection esp. after they have sent out invites to other applicants?
some places flat out sent rejections early but most i would say waited until very late (dec) to send out a rejection. i think many programs wait for handing out rejections just in case applicants cancel (which occurs very often when you end up with program conflicts). so basically it's silence for most programs until the end with the exception of a few...

Thanks for the clarification. Do you recommend calling programs if they have already sent out invites and see why you haven't gotten one? Or just wait and wait..?
Mye Eye 09-24-2007, 11:26 AM University of Colorado (which has not invited me for an interview or a rejection) emailed me to say that they will interview
"Wednesday, November 28 and Sunday, December 2. If you are invited, we will ask you to pick the ½ day session (morning or afternoon) that works best in your schedule. "
the notifications will be via email in Mid-October
FernandoV 09-24-2007, 03:59 PM Another rejection.
Rejections so far:
1. BU (email)
2. Vanderbilt (snail mail)
Interviews so far: ZERO
Starting to worry....
vtrain 09-24-2007, 04:13 PM Got my first interview today - LSU Shreveport snail mail. Interview dates are Oct 27, Nov 3, Nov 17.
That's a bit of relief since I got rejected from BU and SUMMA.
red rose 09-24-2007, 04:24 PM Hi guys,
Congrats on interviews!!!
Have anybody heard anything from Wilmer so far??? Just curious because previous post said that they will let us know by Monday at the latest...and today is Monday.
Good luck ...we need some luck here :o
jj326 09-24-2007, 06:16 PM interviews so far at: UTSW and MCG, both via email. no rejections thus far but give it time and they will come.
congrats to everyone so far and look forward to meeting you guys on the interview trail.
as far as calling and asking about interviews, two PDs said they send out invites on a rolling basis. that being said, i have also heard from some residents that it is a good idea to make sure CAS distributed your app to schools you are very interested in...just in case they didn't.
If you havent heard from Wilmer today, don't get discouraged; my info is at the resident level. When exactly Dr. Miller will sit down to write those e-mails is anyones guess. Maybe tomorrow, maybe Wednesday...
red rose 09-24-2007, 07:25 PM Hi all again
JJ....when did you get invite from UTSW? And what is the other school MGH?
Thank JR for clarification :o
jj326 09-25-2007, 05:11 AM i got an email from both of them last week. and mcg is medical college of georgia.
phoria 09-25-2007, 09:40 AM I've heard from a few programs that my application has been received, and their interview dates (all via email). I have not gotten any offers or rejections (including BU), but am wondering when I should start to get anxious. Any guidelines?
FYI, the interview dates
Albert Einstein College of Medicine: Friday, 12/7, 12/14, and 12/21
Rush University Medical Center :October 17th, 22nd and 26th
Medical College of Wisconsin: November 1, 2, 15, and 16
Mye Eye 09-25-2007, 10:43 AM got my second interview at UT-Southwestern, their 2 dates
"We are currently scheduling interviews for October 12th and November 2nd. An informal reception will be held at 6:30pm the evening before to give candidates a chance to meet our residents and other staff members in a relaxed setting prior to the interviews, so you would need to be available by late afternoon on the preceding day. Friday's agenda begins with breakfast at 7:30 and finishes around 4:30 or 5:00pm. "
This was via email as well
DoubleDown82 09-25-2007, 03:34 PM Is there any value in calling programs to ask if they have my application? I have gotten several notices of a complete application, but definitely not a majority by any means...
Light 09-26-2007, 12:50 AM Hey all. I don't know that there is much utility in calling programs to verify if they have your application, as long as some said they received it, you can likely assume most have as it's a centralized process. I can't speak for other programs, but the couple in the bay area that i'm familiar with haven't even really started reviewing applications yet...still being sorted and downloaded in anticipation of sending out to faculty for review. Hope this helps some.
esodeviation 09-27-2007, 06:49 AM Anyone hear anything new from Wilmer on when interview invites will be sent? (if they haven't already?) Good luck to everyone and hope to see you on the interview trail!
red rose 09-27-2007, 10:48 AM Hi all,
No I haven't heard anything from Wilmer....I was wondering the same question as well.
I hit a dead space for the past 2 wks with no e-mail. Hopefully it will change soon.
Hope to see you all guys :) :hardy::):o:p:idea::thumbup:
Wilmer invites haven't been sent yet.
They are cutting a little close this year with first interview day coming up in a little more than 2 weeks. Those plane tickets are going to be expensive.

i have a good mind to send them a rejection letter....
"Dear BU
After a careful review of your program's features and opportunities, I am hereby notifying you that our department is unable to continue pursuing you at this time. We thank you for wasting $35 of our department's money through SFMatch, and the time it took me to click on the pdf file to select your program. Best of luck in the match!"

Haven't heard from BU either - just called this a.m., was told they already sent an interview offer by email! Only dates left 11/30, 12/7. I hope I'm not losing other emails. It was an .edu address.
jkm77 10-12-2007, 10:14 AM Anyone else get an interview at JSEI?
I thought their confirmation email said that they would be notifying people of interviews after October 29th via email ("If you are selected to interview, you will be contacted via email after October 29.").
Any thoughts?
myki2008 10-12-2007, 10:22 AM Is it bad that I haven't gotten a single interview yet? Should I start worrying?
eyescold 10-12-2007, 10:28 AM WHen a program has sent out interviews (ie Northwestern), does this mean they generally send out a ton of invites and fill most of their spots in a few days, and the only hope of interviewing there if you didn't get one is a cancellation? Or is it usually a slow trickle of invites over a month or so?
eyeguy99 10-12-2007, 02:30 PM I dont know about you guys, but I was told that the first couple weeks of october is when there's a lot of interview invite action... and it's now oct. 12th and decisions (either good or bad) aren't exactly flowing in the ol' inbox. I'm not super worried since, looking at this forum, it seems like there's not a lot of action yet, but i'm a little surprised at the slow trickle of things.
lizzylu 10-12-2007, 06:36 PM From my understanding (from talking to residents and looking on last year's SDN ophthal interview trail) --it's more late Oct that is the main 'influx' of invites.
hope that helps ease some minds for a few more days ;)
that's keeping me from worrying quite so much.

Snickaman 10-21-2007, 12:20 PM Hey everyone,
I keep reading and hearing applicants and residents discuss programs as "top" vs. "middle of the road" OR "solid" vs. "low" OR "Hey, to match is to succeed." However, despite many attempts with various keywords on google, I can't find a complete list of all the programs in the country that compares them or ranks them all. There's the top 17 list from US News & Ophthalmology Times, but is there a full list somewhere or a comparison of clinically vs. research oriented programs; or is this all just word of mouth from residents that have interviewed at these programs in the past? Obviously I know to browse each website and decide for myself at interviews, but is there some other resource or website with an at-a-glance comparison?
Congrats to everyone on interviews. I've been following the thread and will happily post updates if I ever get something that hasn't already been posted. Thanks to all for your collaboration.

No such list exists. Your best bet is talking to recent applicants and current residents to get an idea of the experience at the various programs. Most of the top "ranked" programs offer solid training although not all of them. Some of the top ranked programs have lower than average surgical numbers but you may get to work with some of the "big-wigs" of ophthalmology for what thats worth...
Also, there are many unranked programs where training may be better in terms of clinical and surgical volume, but you may not be working with as many well known or highly published faculty.
You just have to decide what is important to you. Long term, if you are considering academic medicine, or desire the "best" fellowship in competitve fields such as oculoplastic or vitreoretinal surgery, then going to a highly ranked program such as Wilmer, Wills, Bascom, UCLA, Duke, Iowa, etc.. is beneficial although certainly not necessary.
Also, my last word of advice..don't get too enthralled with cataract surgery numbers...110-150 is probably the average. There are a fair number of programs where residents may do 200 or more phacos, but only a handful of anything else.
Ask about numbers with sub-specialty surgeries such as trabs and shunts, corneal transplants, pterygia, strabismus cases, vitrectomies and buckles, lasers such as PI's, YAG Caps, ALT and SLT, PRP and retinal Focal, ptosis, ectropion, post-MOHS or post-trauma reconstructions, DCR's, floor fractures, orbitotomies, temporal a. biopsies, optic n. sheath fenestrations, etc...
Find out how much the residents actually do during the case, as opposed to the attending or fellow.

ballseye 10-23-2007, 02:57 PM This thread was a find. I was in the dark until this morning.
Hit Wilmer 10/15. They wanted to be first. The program was all that and more. Baltimore seems like a hard place to love, but the autonomy and mentorship opportunities definitely make it worth it. The residents seemed to be pretty happy with their training, despite the intensity.
As of now, going to Loyola (phone), UMinnesota, Storm/MUSC, Cullen/Baylor, UWashington, and Doheny/USC. (all email)

most, if not all residents tell me that they got interview invites well into november. people tend to accept everything and then later start canceling as they realize they can't/don't want to go on a billion interviews...thus, parting the red sea for us normal people.
Hi all,
I have: Henry ford 11/19
I want: Henry ford 12/17

ps. I agree with the above that as long as we hang in, it will be fine. That's the hope at least :)
lemedecin05 10-25-2007, 09:16 AM yay...finally something.. iwas beginning to think my application was accidently kicked under the desk and forgotten at all the programs...

anyone have any info on this program? i'm assuming that it's pathology heavy but lacking in the departments of teaching and street cred/getting fellowships?
Fuchs 10-25-2007, 04:35 PM Got an email from OHSU today. They have filled 12/8, so they're only offering 11/17 now.

ophthogirl 10-25-2007, 04:55 PM Does anyone know anything about Brown? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
there's 2 spots per year
the faculty are nice, knowledgeable and approachable
the residents run the general clinic on their own - they only consult the attending if needed (specialty clinic they almost always present to the attending)
strong clinical training, not as much research but they send most of their residents on to fellowships
surgery numbers are good - do small procedures as pgy2, most or time is pgy4 - most residents leave having done 2-3 pk's on their own (something i'm told is rather unique)
there's some sort of lecture or review most mornings (not on weekends) clinic is 9-5ish
journal club monthly
what else - providence is a fun town
the hospital is nice and big and they have an au bon pain
random i know
sorry hope this helps
good luck!
red rose 10-25-2007, 06:40 PM Hi guys,
I don't think it has been posted yet...adding University of Cincinnati via snail mail
Dates Nov 30th, Dec 4th and Dec 6th.
Anyone know when Doheny is interviewing?

Running clinic on your own is not a good thing.
Doing 2 PKPs "on your own" will not prepare you to do them in practice.

i think this is in reference to the info i put up about brown
i think you may have misunderstood some of what i meant, or i may have not expressed what i'm thinking in my head
what i meant about clinic is that i felt that they had a lot of autonomy with their general patients. the patients they know well who are fairly straight-forward do not need to be presented to the attending. i am under the impression that not all programs are like this and have residents present every patient to an attending no matter what (which can be tedious and annoying). i did not feel that the residents were floundering or providing poor patient care, it was more just knowing what you can handle on your own and knowing when to get advice (obviously no one knows in the beginning but you learn).
and as for the pkp's i meant this sort of as an experience. i get the impression that in programs with a lot of fellows its possible that you could come out having not done any on your own. obviously if you wanted to make a practice out of doing corneal transplants you'd want more experience - ie a fellowship.
anyway, my comments are really just what i thought of the program.
i am in no way the end all be all of the brown ophthalmology department.
take what you want from it.
cheers
have a great day

I think both of you are right. Having autonomy is great. As a med student I didn't realize how important this was until I became a resident. On the other hand having too much of it is a bad thing. There's a fine line between having lots of autonomy and feeling like you're stranded without being provided the proper guidance. The latter is like being thrown into the ocean with no lifeguard around.

grizzler 10-31-2007, 06:27 PM ok so here is a small list i've noticed so far of places that i havent seen with interviews:
wills (wont be til mid-november i read), George Wash, Columbia, Tulane, UC-Davis, UC-SD, Indiana, WashU in StL, LSU-New Orleans
any others y'all can think of off hand? any of these give out interviews but arent listed on the master list yet? I know alabama birmingham gave out interviews, but dont know where that post is...so i guess we could add that one to the list since it looks like i skipped that one accidentally

You can add Maryland I believe, or correct me if I am wrong.
koolkatmd 11-01-2007, 07:41 AM UCSD via email (10/30)..only offered Dec 17.

msueye 11-01-2007, 09:14 AM Does anyone know anything about University of Chicago or Northwestern? Is one program considered better than the other? Any suggestions if I have to chose between the two programs?
thanks

So how about some of the other New York programs... anyone hear anything good/bad? St. Vincent, Mount Sinai, SUNY Stony Brook, St. Luke's-Roosevelt? I see someone posted NYMC - did they mean the NYMC Brooklyn/Queens Program or St. Vincent (which is sponsored by NYMC) ?
Ophtho8 11-01-2007, 10:02 AM Anybody interested in switching a Case Western interview on Saturday for their Friday time slot?
Try the interview switch thread - great creation...

thanks

yeah but in truth...i think i prefer a rejection notice over the silent treatment...seems like a nice courtesy to know that you can cross a place off your list instead of sittin and hopin u finally hear from them (even if i did get rejected from some places i wanted to go)
p.s. where did u get that image? that's awesome

limbo has its own sucking points
fyi - when you post a message if you look at the list of smilies on the right and click the More button at the bottom theres a variety of interesting smilies that pop up in a window.......

+pity+speaking of rejections, u of minnesota sent me an email to me today abt rejecting me.... i would've believed it, but then i read it a second time round, i realized they had rejected me from their peds ophtho fellowship  ...at least they're confident that i'll be doing ophtho in the first place then!
Gotta take it all in stride, i guess! :corny:
(thanks ophthogirl, love the animation!)
BaseballFan 11-01-2007, 11:30 PM Thanks for putting the list up of interview dates It is a helpful tool.
However, readers should note that some programs on the list appear to have interview dates that are omitted from the list. Illinois-Chicago for example offered me Nov 19 and Dec 10 in an email on 10/16/07 and neither of these dates are on the list above.
I only noticed this tonight as I was trying to use the list to start to think about date changes I (may) have to try to make to avoid going broke and/or insane next month.
As much of a pain as it is to be constantly communicating with program coordinators, it may be useful to contact programs to see if there are additional dates that you (or I) don't know about and may be available before booking flights and making plans.
Happy searching!
lemedecin05 11-02-2007, 07:35 AM called emory...filled for interviews and not offering anymore.. oh well :(
