TCNJ 10-02-2007, 07:37 PM i haven't been home yet, but my mom said that i got something in the mail yesterday from them. she mentioned something about a 5 week program that starts the end of june though...so i'm gonna have to check that out! did u get anything back yet? EMT2ER-DOC 10-02-2007, 08:37 PM i haven't been home yet, but my mom said that i got something in the mail yesterday from them. she mentioned something about a 5 week program that starts the end of june though...so i'm gonna have to check that out! did u get anything back yet? The 5 week program is a pre-matriculation program. You will be given a shortened version of your first year in 5 weeks. You will have classes including Biochemistry, Histology, Physiology, and OMM. You will have exams but they count for absolutely nothing than just giving you the feel of what it may be like in medical school in addition to getting people who have been out of school for a little while a chance to get back into the groove before school starts. Keep in mind though that the Pre-Matriculation program ends about 1 week before Orientation so you can kiss your summer goodbye. If you guys have any questions, let me know. I will answer them as best as I can. ComplexGal 10-03-2007, 09:18 PM heyy.. yea i got my packt last week on saturday with all the forms that i have to send back to them.. but i didnt get anything about a 5 wk program... is this something thats available to everyone or only selected students? EMT2ER-DOC 10-04-2007, 12:15 PM heyy.. yea i got my packt last week on saturday with all the forms that i have to send back to them.. but i didnt get anything about a 5 wk program... is this something thats available to everyone or only selected students? Everyone. You get this info a lot later. I think after Admitted Students Day in April. TCNJ 10-04-2007, 12:31 PM i already got a lot of information about the 5 week program, but it does say its geared toward non-traditional students and those that weren't science majors (which is me), so maybe they send it to everyone else later...? ComplexGal 10-05-2007, 11:18 AM yea that would make sense cuz i was a bio major... also tcnj, r u goin to be commuting or would u have to move to sth jersey? maybe we could like room together or something... im starting to look at places and costs now before its too late... lemme know. TCNJ 10-05-2007, 12:00 PM hey...i am going to have to move to south jersey, but my bf and i are actually moving in together (we've been dating for like 6 years). sorry i won't be able to be your roommate but we def. should exchange info and what not because i'm def. gonna need someone to talk to about the 50 billion questions i'm gonna have...lol.. DocInProgress 10-07-2007, 08:53 AM hey guys, im thinking about applying to umdnj for osteopathic medicine and i was wondering if i can pay in-state tuition if i live in new jersey (as in I rent a place in new jersey). do i have to change my driver's license and stuff as well in order to pay for in-state tuition? or will it not matter? please, someone let me know what qualifies as an 'in-stater'. also, hows umdnj in terms of board pass rates and % of students going into specialties (both do/md residency)? is it possible for me to go in a residency in texas after my 4 yrs of medical school? there are some people that i know that live there and i would like to have my residency there. thanks for the answers.. :) DOctorJay 10-07-2007, 01:08 PM NJ license needed for instate tuition plus proof of housing. everything else you don't have to worry about. lackoftalent 10-23-2007, 01:39 PM hi everybody! got my acceptance last friday. i'm pretty excited! yay c/o 2012!!! (just thought I'd say hi) EMT2ER-DOC 10-23-2007, 09:31 PM NJ license needed for instate tuition plus proof of housing. everything else you don't have to worry about. As per Paula this is on a case by case basis and may change in the future. garfpa 11-09-2007, 08:47 AM did you guys get a phone call or mail acceptance? i interviewed about a wk ago and i am want to know now:D!! i really liked it there.:) FutureDrO 11-09-2007, 05:05 PM Hey you guys! I got my acceptance back in October so I am a part of the 2012 crew too!! :) As for how they informed me of my acceptance, I got a phone call from Paula. But, I'm not sure if they call each and every person. So there is a chance that some people just get the letter in the mail. They meet every third friday of the month and then start letting people as early as that day. Good luck!! eichetotheizzo 11-12-2007, 10:50 AM to all those that got in and plan to go to UMDNJ, Age/sex/where are you guys from? I had to get a new letter sent since the original was lost somehow in transit. Garfpa, as FutureDrO said, they meet only once on month (third Friday of the month) so looks like they haven't met to discuss your file yet. They may notify you that day, but it may take longer. eichetotheizzo 11-15-2007, 05:43 AM Yeah I am excited to start next year too! I think it'll be fun to finally meet in person with all of you after months of SDN haha. garfpa 11-15-2007, 06:31 AM Thank you all for the responses....tomorrow is the big day. I hope i get good news!:D EEL08 11-15-2007, 08:45 AM Does anyone know how far UMDNJ is from PCOM? My husband just got a call from UMDNJ that they are very interested in him as an applicant but they need his secondary and LORs first. I don't imagine I have a great chance there but if he submits his secondary I will too. He can't apply to PCOM because he can't fulfill one of the LOR requirements but I can. I'm trying to get an idea of the distance between the two schools should the very slim chance of this situation arise. Tourterm 11-16-2007, 03:29 AM Does anyone know how far UMDNJ is from PCOM? I don't know if there is a train station near PCOM, but that may be an option as well. Fill out the secondary, what have you got to lose? Fill out the secondary, what have you got to lose? Thanks! I think I will go ahead and fill it out this weekend and send it in Monday. I'm trying to get my husband to harrass his school one more time to see if the guy he thinks was his advisor will write him a letter. I still have to ask my Dean for one. You're right it doesn't hurt to try. :) DOctorJay 11-22-2007, 08:54 PM there are students at UMDNJ-SOM who live in Philly so you guys should be able to make it work even if you're at different schools, check out the PATCO and SEPTA stations for trains in the area. DocInProgress 11-23-2007, 07:05 PM Is it true that I'll have a better shot at placing into a specialty residency such as dermatology if I went to PCOM over UMDNJ? EMT2ER-DOC 11-24-2007, 02:17 PM Is it true that I'll have a better shot at placing into a specialty residency such as dermatology if I went to PCOM over UMDNJ? No. It is all dependent on your COMLEX/USMLE scores and how well you interview. The secret to getting into the residency that you want is to network. If you start going to conferences and meeting the residency directors there and getting into a good conversation with them try to get information from them and so on and so on. sandman513 11-24-2007, 06:40 PM 24/male/Howell, NJ Hey guys, I just was recently accepted and plan on attending, congrats to everyone! Phone call? Email? Letter? How long did they take to send your official letter? I was notified by phone, but my actual acceptance letter took a few weeks to arrive because it got lost in transit somewhere, and I had to ask for a replacement. sandman513 11-29-2007, 01:25 PM I was notified by phone, but still waiting for the official mailed documents FutureDrO 12-05-2007, 01:50 PM 22/f/Cheverly, MD I'm not sure if I will be attending SOM for sure yet since I don't know if i'll have to decide between SOM and two other schools that I will be hearing from in the next few weeks. However, I do like UMDNJ alot!! Can any current students give us any advice as to what we should work on getting, the best housing locations in the areas, and your experiences? OH! And does anyone know what the status or any information regarding the new curriculum that is supposed to start next year? Christluvu 12-08-2007, 06:59 PM Hey...I'm still waiting to hear for an acceptance from UMDNJ-SOM...could those of you that were accepted post your stats, ECs, etc? It would really help put into perspective how the accepted student profile looks this year...thanks! Tourterm 12-08-2007, 09:54 PM ...could those of you that were accepted post your stats, ECs, etc? It would really help put into perspective how the accepted student profile looks this year...thanks! The best estimate of what the accepted class profile will be for for this year is whatever it was last year. I don't know what those numbers are, but they are not likely to deviate much in only one year's time. Those numbers may be posted on their site someplace, or maybe floating around on the boards here (I seem to recall a chart of average MCAT scores for each school, but not sure how up to date it was). AACOMAS has average GPA and MCAT scores listed, but not school specific. SDN is not a representative sample of either those students applying/accepted to UMDNJ-SOM or medical school in general. I could post my stats, but they would not offer any sort of insight or perspective on the issue. The only "helpful" perspective I could put this in is that they liked you enough to interview you, it appears that most people who interview get accepted, and hopefully if the interview went well they will accept you. It takes time, they only meet once a month. lackoftalent 12-11-2007, 01:15 PM my turn: i'm 27 (which i think qualifies me as the oldest new student to date?...actually, I'll be 28 when we start...eep!)/male/currently living in nyc, but i'm "from" rochester, ny and i did a 2 year stint in northern california after graduation. looking forward to meeting everyone!!! FutureDrO 12-17-2007, 06:32 PM BUMP....Come on you guys. We need more action in this thread! How is everyone spending their last few months before school? Has anyone started thinking of housing or anything else. I know I have been. sandman513 12-19-2007, 09:51 AM SKI...mountain bike, travel, and trying to pay off some credit card debt from applications. Any outdoor enthusists out there?:D FutureDrO 12-20-2007, 06:15 PM I'm not much of an outdoor enthusiast, sorry!! But my plans for the rest of the year is to do just what you're doing....making money to pay some bills! I wish I had money to travel though.... sandman513 12-21-2007, 07:02 AM Yeah I don't have any money either, but somehow I am going to find a way to travel ViolinCello 12-21-2007, 05:49 PM Finally getting a chance to join this group. I'm very excited to meet everyone and to attend UMDNJ SOM! I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about the housing nearby? I live in north Jersey (about 1 1/2 hours away) and want to get a 1BR apartment near campus. I'm especially concerned with safety, so does anyone know which nearby towns are the safest? Thanks! Porco Rosso 01-27-2008, 09:52 PM Housing situation in south jersey is very good. you can practically find good apts/houses/condos within 5/10/15mins of the campus. The nicer areas around here are: voorhees, cherry hill, haddonfield, and collingswood. However, the stratford area itself is very safe with plenty of housing options. I was in the grad program and walked to school everyday including late nights and no problems. No car break-ins. It is pretty much a quite family residential area. Overall, you will be very safe in south jersey as long as you dont live in Camden. Porco Rosso 01-28-2008, 12:30 PM good luck... MissPriss4 01-28-2008, 02:57 PM Thanks for the info, Porco! We're putting together an apt guide for you all that will go out periodically as it is updated w/ students volunteering to answer your Qs on their complexes and even give you tours if you wish so watch for it soon from the Admissions Office. The guide also gives approx rents + utilities. Also I believe some ppl will be subletting to pre-matrickies. Overall, you will be very safe in south jersey as long as you dont live in Camden. past note... Porco Rosso 04-05-2008, 06:11 PM That housing guide that came with the admission packet had many good housing options. I highly suggest that on top of craigslist. anthroguy 04-05-2008, 07:18 PM hey, i'm starting here in the fall...and do most people live with roommates? or do most people mean 'apartment mates', not necessarily roommates. i haven't had a roommate that since sophomore year of college, and not that having a roommate is a terrible thing, but it'd take some readjusting? thanks. Hey Im a first year who chose to live by myself because i hadnt had a roommate since sophmore year of college. Im not too big a fan of it right now because unlike college im not surrounded by people to hang out with. If anything if you want to have your own apartment live at echelon glenn, stratford court or the village where you'll be surrounded by students. Of those three stratford court is the cheapest and the village most expensive. If you have a roommate, I recommend echelon glen. The village is nice, but all electric and the rent is a little high to begin with. Hope this helps. ThaiBoxerBriefs 04-06-2008, 03:53 AM anyone know if umdnj offers any educational discounts on laptops? i'm looking to get a tablet pc, possibly and wanted to know if they could hook it up. pmukhi 04-06-2008, 08:19 AM Great! I look forward to seeing this list - I'll either need to sublet in July for the prematric program or commute. It's nice knowing that others will be spending their summers in a classroom like me! Also, I'm seriously considering having a roommate now after seeing a few places. I love the echelon glen, but the price of a one bedroom is a little steep. :( If anyone's interested, you can send me a personal message - I am female and would prefer a female roommate. DOctorJay 04-06-2008, 08:12 PM 2 answers here 1. i believe the school has a deal with Dell for pcs 2. i live in echelon glenn, if you decide to move here SCOUR your apartment for problems, particularly the carpets and make them put in writing that you are not responsible for any spots that show up on the carpet. multiple friends of mine have been screwed out of their deposits because spots just appear on the carpeting (in my old apartment they appeared in places that absolutely could not have been caused by me). in my new apartment there are spots that are appearing and there is no way to explain them, luckily I have a document that i'm not responsible for them. if you guys don't mind a bit of a drive "the club" in Deptford has gorgeous places, a bit pricier but some students live there as well as some interns and residents. Tourterm 04-07-2008, 12:44 AM (not sure if this is the best place for this, but would certainly be of interest to some UMDNJ-SOM students) If any incoming (or even current) students are interested, The Joseph E Enright Foundation offers at least 5 scholarships, twice a year, for $1000. I was awarded a scholarship from them before, back when it was only $500, and am not permitted to apply again. The only requirements are that the money be applied to tuition for students in the health care field, and that students "reside in communities served by The Enright Foundation." I'm not real sure which communities would qualify, but they are based in Summit, NJ. So, if you or your family live reasonably close, give it shot. Their website is located here: http://www.josephenrightfoundation.org/artman/publish/index.shtml The scholarship information and 2008 application can be found here: http://www.josephenrightfoundation.org/artman/publish/cat_index_30.shtml The application itself is pretty simple. Should only take a few minutes to fill out. Awards appear to be based mostly on extra circular activities, volunteer work, and an essay. I hope this helps some people, good luck :) ThaiBoxerBriefs 04-07-2008, 08:36 AM thanks, Jay. also, i wanted to ask for those students out there who are buying laptops for school next year (or who are already in school)...how useful are the tablet pc's at umdnj. like, are there a lot of people using them? are most of the lecture materials in electronic format?? oh, and is anyone looking for a male roommate :o Round2 04-07-2008, 02:35 PM What is happening with in-state tuition for OOS this year? Since usually all of our lectures are posted before the class, they have it with them and they write their notes and study right off of there. All of the lectures are either in PDF format or Powerpoint. They are usually up before the class. How you use them is a very personal thing. Some people print them out and others just write their notes on the computers. bellacnella 04-07-2008, 09:06 PM Hi, I read somewhere in the forum that you live near umdnj-som. I just got into a master's program at the stratford campus and would like to know more about that area. Would you consider that area a safe place to live in? Are there decent/not too expensive apartments near the school for lease? I'm looking for an apartment within 5 miles from the school. Thanks, Dr. X Hi Dr.X, I live in voorhees, which is less than 5 minutes from the stratford campus. Trust me when I say, this is surburbia. Its safe. But voorhees has some of the more expensive housing...i think one bedrooms will run you about 850 plus utilities. Some complexes are the villiage, labonne vie, and three pond. some of the cheaper areas are in clementon, stratford and lindenwold but i dont know the specific complexes (though there are many). Will you have a car? If so, also consider collingswood. I would try craigslist, the south jersey section. Around the school there are lots of shopping places, strip malls, etc. There are restaurants and supermarkets in eagle plaza (about 10 minutes down white horse road). The echelon mall is a pretty modest mall, but its there and there is a target close by as well. -Bella drtaytay 04-12-2008, 09:12 PM I have a two bedroom apartment. I live 5 minutes from school. I was hoping I would have more than 3 weeks off between graduation and med school to find an apartment, furnish it, and hopefully get away for a weekend :/ :scared: From what I was told, those required to attend the pre-matric program are at least one of the following: - those that took significant time off between college and med school - those that had a non-science major in undergrad - those that are minority/disadvantaged students - those with gpa/mcat on the lower end of the matriculated class If you fall into any of these categories, you are required to attend. On the positive, however, I heard they're using the same lecture notes that will be redistributed to the class in august. I initially joined the program because it would give me a chance to bond with fellow classmates earlier and get to know some of the faculty (since they have preceptorship assignments for the pre-matric student). You can also have time to become familiar with the area as well. Plus, it is a great time for you to see what study methods work for you and test it out. (I just decided not to go for it in the end because I've been working for a year now and could really use a break.. I can't believe i'm saying this, but I'd rather be back in school than continue with this work life!) see you guys in august. comet34 05-05-2008, 12:13 PM Hey, Not accepted but crossing my fingers. I will leave it half furnished with all my first, second, and clinical year books. I have a lake in the backyard and plenty of space to have bbq's. The only thing that's missing are 2 eager med students that want to live in luxury. The place is in voorhees and is located literally 4 minutes and 15 seconds from the school (if you only hit one light). I am very reasonable with pricing just wanted to see what you guys thought. Contact me at bruskie23@gmail.com and I'll send you pictures. I leave for maryland in june but I am willing to drive back to show you the place on the weekends. There wasn't a mandatory one, but they did send us some minimum requirements. I have one I bought back in 2004 that doesn't quite meet the specs, but should hold up just fine. I'm not a mac guy (price outweighs the benefits) and I would rather have something a bit bigger that was more powerful, so I would probably get something like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8780125&type=product&id=1204332500899 It's a bit of a matter of personal preference - if you want something that ways as little as an iPod, look into a Sony Vaio, but be prepared to pay a bit more for it. From my experience I'd stay away from Dell. I've had nothing but problems with them, and my sister was a Dell rep and her college and said it was a huge headache. butterfly83 05-20-2008, 03:24 PM Hi Guys! I am a new member of SOM's 2012 class. I saw some questions a few posts up about white coats and computers. I don't know if you guys ever got a response from current students or not so I thought I'd fill you in... White coat: you will try on and get a white coat the day of the white coat ceremony. No need to worry about ordering or giving a size just yet (unless they changed the procedure, but I don't think they did). Computers: technically they are manditory. Realistically, you don't need to bring them to classes or anything. Some people use them during class, but most don't. Most people's "school use" of computers is to listen to the lectures you missed (or relisten to the ones you fell asleep during). Just get something that will hold a lot of files, play video files, and something you feel comfortable with. I know NJMS switched over to a more digital / computer based histology class at some point*, is (has?) SOM doing the same? I'd like to avoid the added cost of having to purchase a laptop if possible. I really just hope I'm reading too much into this. * "NEWARK - Microscopes are so 20th century, at least for first-year medical students at New Jersey Medical School . The microscopes normally used in histology - the study of the structure of tissue using minute samples on slides, a class generally taken in the second semester of a medical student's first year - have been replaced for the Class of 2010 by the students' own laptop computers. In recent weeks, students' laptops were networked into a national database of 3,000 sample slides from two local Web servers and five remote Web servers - replacing the traditional microscope and box of 100 slides given to each medical student for histology. The technique is known as "virtual microscopy," or VM. " anthroguy 07-13-2008, 02:31 PM Hey, Im going to be a 2nd year and in terms of Histologyo and computers, last year we were using microscopes and slides in lab. So even if Prof Fischer is requiring laptops from lab, if lab is not mandatory, it may not matter for you. I had a laptop, but rarely brought it to school, it was easier jsut to borrow a computer from the library. Hope this helps. Christluvu 07-15-2008, 01:13 PM Does anyone know when tuition is due?
