I am not sure if this is really the case but this is what I was told by some residents at my program. Would love to hear any insight into this.
I was told that there are basically two types of programs:
(1) Those that just have strict score cut offs and basic things that they look for in the applications (ie. research, publications, etc) and if you meet those they will grant an interview regardless of if you are an American student, US-IMG or FMG. Most of these programs send out mass invites to all those applicants who meet the criteria on a certain date.
(2) Those programs which do not do the whole mass email intive. They filter applications and prioritize them. They first invite their OWN students from their home program. Next they look for regional applicants. Then they look at the remaining American graduate. Next they move onto the US-IMG (citizens, green card holders) and lastly then invite the FMGs.
This being said, I'd assume the latter is the method in which the most competitive programs operate. This seems like a very time consuming effort. Would anyone know how late into the interview season most programs stop inviting applicants or even reviewing applications? Is there even any truth to the methodology described above or are some of these residents just trying to make the process sound more complicated then it really is?
