Hey don't worry about, I have only got 3 responses too. I have to admit that I was getting really nervous but I think that a lot of programs are waiting until Nov 1st. I mean I know I am getting an interview at my home institution and I haven't received anything from them at the moment.

What do you mean by replies - just confirmation that they've received your application? Did you recently apply or has it been a while? If it's been a while you might want to reevaluate/talk to your Dean because at least a few of the less competitive programs should have likely offered something by now, although I'm definitely no expert (just what I've gathered from these forums). Maybe apply to some less-competitive FM programs as well?

some confirmations, others we are reviewing your application.... I put my application in on Oct 9

Linus2007
10-24-2007, 02:36 PM
That's a good point. What types of programs did you apply for. What you could do is look at the Invite thread for 2007 to gauge a rough guideline of responses. I found it helpful, by just going through the thread you can get an idea of what programs haven't sent out applications yet or the time delay between application and responses.

There is something you are not telling us (although you don't need to tell us your business).

You applied to 132 programs...why? Are you an IMG? Is there something unfavorable in your application?

I would tell another person to just be patient and relax, but there is obviously something about yourself that you know makes you unattractive to programs.

Either way, I wish you the best and think that, out of 132, 5 rejections are not bad. You've still got a looooot more to go!

Have done any away elective or are u planning to? Also because some programs will automatically interview you if u rotate with them plus this is a chance to show them that failing step 1 was just a fluke.
I wish you good luck!

when did you actually submit your apps?

are you and fmg or amg?

i wouldn't worry too much, it is still relatively early still and most offers will come after the MSPE.

my understanding is that this year the offers are coming a little later then even last year in that there are far more applicants then in previous years.

be patient, only a week or so until things really pick up..

yeah it still is really early! start worrying mid november, but until then keep your fingers crossed! you applied to many programs I'm sure you'll get at least a handful of interviews. You might want to call programs in mid-november if you havn't already heard from them!

If you are worried about getting interviews or matching, then rather than merely casting a wider net, you need to cast a different net. In other words, applying to the top programs in each state doesn't increase your odds even though you are casting a "wider net." If you feel you are not a top candidate then unfortunately you need to apply to programs that you realistically have a shot at AS WELL AS programs that are "wishful." These include programs that are small community programs and programs that are in out-of-the-way locales. As an American graduate, regardless of scores, so long as you pass you should be able to find at least one IM program that will accept you (which is all that matters). Good luck.

doc02
10-26-2007, 06:02 PM
P.S. Before anyone gets mad, I'm not busting on IM when I say anyone who passes can get a spot. I'm not disrespecting IM, just being realistic given the number of programs there are out there and the number of applicants annually and the competitiveness of the specialty.

yup..one more reject today...
I was particularly upset with this one cuz I rotated at the hospital for an elective, so I call and I was told that cuz I failed step 1 and cuz my passing score wasn't very high.. it hurt me...
but they told me once my step 2 score comes back-- it should come in a few weeks and if it is higher, they might reconsider my application... I can only pray at this point my step 2 score is better, wooooooo how bad is this situation.....
I'm hanging in there......

Linus2007
10-29-2007, 04:31 PM
Glad to hear you took your Step 2 already. A strong Step 2 score can help offset a Step 1 score. Did you request ERAS to release any updated USMLE scores? I don't know if programs re-review applicants if new information comes up if they have been rejected, but you could call them up and say "oh hey my Step 2 score is....". Again it's so easy to freak out, I am doing it now all the time which sucks...and a little funny if you think about it. I mean I check my e-mail usually once maybe twice a day tops..I'm doing that at least every 5 minutes. You still have approx. 90% of your application programs to still reply. That's a lot with 100+ programs. Sooo just relax and wait for your step 2 score. You will definitely match no problem. I also think that a residency program is what you make of it. I'm am going to be just as lazy at a community program as I am at JHU or MGH :).

This thread is pretty messed up. I smell a fish, either you have something EXTREMELY wrong with your application or you are just pulling everyone's leg for whatever reason. Lots of people get interviews with a failed Step 1. Anyway, all this whining is really unproductive. Suck it up and act like a physician. Stop keeping this running tab of unsuccess and look forward to the future with a positive outlook. :)

hey... but I am in a pretty numb situation, cuz most of my classmates are telling me where they are interviewing and blah blah blah.. but I can't speak cuz I haven't advertized my situation to them... posting on this forum is a way for me to "let it out" without actually going crazy.. kinda like write in a diary, but I really wanted advice from people and moral support most of all.... and thanks for your moral support... you really don't need to follow this thread if you don't want to.....

Hey,

If it makes you feel any better, I had a friend who went to a very well respected southern med school a few years ago. He had to take an extra year and failed Ob/Gyn + IM. His board scores were dismal, although he did pass the first time. He got a few interviews in PMR, but matched NO WHERE! he had to scramble, but found a very good family medicine position in a well respected residency program (one of the top FM programs in the country actually!). Make a long story short, he is now a Fam doc making a decent salary of $145,000.... happy with his job, but still single LOL

good luck!:luck:

Is your last name bin laden....or did you commit a felony in the past? Something isn't right.

Did you sleep with some program directors wife and now are on a black list of some kind? Have you ever been arrested for animal cruelty???

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!!! My dog with one testicle can get an interview for internal medicine in some no name town with a community hospital.

I'm actually a married female with a great hubby and beautiful son... never did an illegal thing in my life...no relation to anyone in particular "out there"... just messed up in medical school for being lazy and not taking step 1 seriously...I can only blame myself for that... but hey once I graduate (hopefully with a residency position somewhere) it won't matter after that for me failing and not doing so well the second time on step 1 (it was very low, but passing...)
anyhow.. good day people and trick or treat...

plus.. I called a few places and they are telling me that they have gotten more applications this year then previous years, so they are screening out many people that they would probably interviewed in the past.. but they claim that applications are at a "all-time" high... who knows how true this is...

I mean I probably contributed to this "all-time" high with my 100+ applications, but I only did it cuz I wasn't confident... probably others like me out there that feel not as confident, but trying to not have to scramble...
I guess I am trying to secure a spot...

Remember, many programs especially the ultra-competitive ones screen out on the basis of numbers alone initially. The good news is that you still have well over 100 app's out there! so keep your head up! were the ones you got rejected from (u don't have to name them) ultra competitive? I would guess so. Anyhow, as my dean said to us..... wait until the first two weeks of november and then if you get nothing start calling. Remember, even if you have to scramble (worst comes to worst) even tahts not the end of the world. Many great places are left over, read my post above with my friend who matched in a terrific program in fam med and is doing quite well financially now.

Good Luck, I'm routing for you :):luck:

I e-mailed a lot of programs prior to submitting the application and the truth is that most of them required passing both steps on the first try, at least that was the case for an IMG. I'm sure that's what made up the bulk of your rejections. A likely scenario is that your application is borderline for the rest and they're just waiting for replies from invites they sent out. Keep your chin up.

and I got another one today as well, twice... cuz they sent out the one for people applying for transitional year.. then the sent another one titled "correction to previous email" for people applying to categorical.... and they added "If you would like to be considered for a 2009 position, you may re-apply during the next ERAS open session and we would be happy to review your

If you guys cannot see that this is a joke, then I am frightened that you could possibly be taking care of peoples lives next year. I am new to student doctor, and after reading this blog it is obvious that "in need of friends" is in need of something far more than that. Whoever this person is needs help. Your posts are absurd and I am repulsed by the way in which everyone is giving you attention...including myself. You were asked which program you received an interview from and you gave an around about answer; you completely dodged the question. Please stop being selfish and making this blog entirely about you and start giving some feedback that is important/helpful to everyone. If I wanted to watch a soap opera I would. You are an impersonater, and if in fact I am wrong, and you are truthful, maybe you are not meant to be in the medical field. I will be disappointed if anyone else gives anymore input on this pathetic blog. Thanks, and good luck to everyone in internal medicine.

Hi. Congrats on the interviews... looks like things are looking up!
Only one thing -- the numbers don't add up. 106 + 8 + 24 + 2...

oh, whooops -- did you mean the 8 "on hold" are still left to hear from? I'm a dope.

Well, still, congratulations!

This is getting out of hand. I have never posted a reply and probably won't after this one.

Its very interesting to see the power of one person's opinion on a lot of people! by this I mean the post quoted above. This person apparently never bothered to post anything here before and the first post he did was all negative and everyone fell for it! As a MD I think its very important for us to be able to think for ourselves and not be easily swayed by other people's negative opinion- its especially important for us new physicians not to be influenced by some of the embittered attitudes of some (a few definitely not Most) older ( or even new) physicians who have lost their empathy for their patients and have resorted to making fun of their own patients.

Woohoo congrats on the second interview!! In a few weeks time your dilemma will have changed from being worried about getting no interviews to try to schedule in a ton of interviews. Hope the invites have allayed your fears a bit. Congrats, a pint to you madam! :hardy:

Well some people (aka bullies) obviously can't relate to the concept of someone struggling in this process... from what I gather, these people OBVIOUSLY are qualified for the top 10 programs out there-- at least in their dreams:sleep:...

I honestly doubt that!! I wouldn't mind to have that dilemma, honestly:)...
I scheduled (officially) the first interview this morning...still makes jitter thinking about it...it's official and I can't wait...I scheduled it in December, cuz it'll give me time to make travel plans... the secretary was so nice...

Keep the faith. 102 is a buttload left. The programs are taking a lot of time to respond I only have a 30% reply rate thus far.

I kind of enjoyed "the saga" . . .

You know, not everyone has the "perfect app". As a guy with a "complicated" history, I was rooting for her.
