I am a DO student at Arizona college of Osteopathic Medicine in Glendale Arizona. Can anyone tell me the problems if any come up with applying to both MD and DO residencies. I want to do my residency in Indiana, but there are only allopathic residencies in Indiana. So I will also so applying to surrounding states, but will only apply to DO residencies in those states. Anyone give me any info.
Thanks

depends on what you're planning on going into. really competitive programs might be tougher. things like derm, ortho, neurosurg, radio, etc... will be really hard to get into MD programs. but if you're interested in IM, FP,... you won't have any programs. during your fourth year, do a rotation out in indiana at the hospital of your choice. that should help. if you're only a first or second year, don't even worry about that stuff yet. do well on boards (do COMLEX and USMLE) and your class. the rest might fall into place. if you are also applying to the surrounding DO programs, go ahead and apply to MD ones as well. you never know, you might get in. in general DOs don't have much problems with residencies. just know in general, DO hospitals are smaller and more often located in communities, unlike MD university-based programs. pick wisely.
