Hi All,
I have finished my interview trail for Ophtho, having gone to a good number of interviews (10+). However, I'm starting to worry as I only received 3 interviews for PGY-1 year. Granted, I did restrict my ERAS application on where I wanted to live for 1 year, but I did apply to about 15 programs, mostly prelim, some transitional.

I know it's too late to submit more applications now, but do more Prelim interview invites continue into Jan? But I suppose people do scramble for Prelim-- anyone care to share their experience with the Scramble?

Thanks in Advance!!!

yes, many prelim interviews continue into january, maybe even february. you are obviously a very strong candidate if you got 10+ ophthalmology interviews. Don't delay. Get on the phone with these prelim programs you have applied to and follow up on your application status. Let them know you are an ophtho applicant (they will realize this means you probably have good numbers) and this may speed things up for you. I applied for intern year relatively late and have called intern progs to get things moving. Good luck:)

don't worry, worst case scenario is you have to scramble into a painful pgy1 program. But that won't affect your career, it'll just be a sucky year. Thats happened to a couple of my friends. One worked out a deal for another prelim med spot at her own medical school's hospital (connections help). Another scrambled into a pretty bad program (he was one of the very few US grads). But it was only one year, and now he's fine doing ophtho.

Although the video tape he made of his internship's morning rounds where the attending and residents were all speaking hindi was pretty funny.

Once I matched into ophtho, I then called the program where I matched and asked for an interview. Once I got the interview, I let them know that this is where I wanted to do my internship, I called them before rank list submission, and re-expressed my enthusiasm and let them know that I was ranking them first. Most medicine places love ophtho prelims b/c we are so smart and motivated:thumbup:. Good luck, happy holidays
