for those that want to live off-campus, why? Is it because its cheaper or you just want to live by yourself and not in a "dorm-like" environment?

Thats actually a really good point, I didnt even think of it that way. I think the dorms end up being somewhere around $1000 a month, and you share bathrooms and kitchens. Isnt it possible to find like a nice one bedroom for around the same price in the nearby area? The only thing is traveling...

Hey Guys,

I am sorry to ask you again. I am from out of state and got accepted.
Can you guys tell me more about where MCPHS-worcester ranks relative to the other new-england Pharmacy schools?

I don't know much about east schools.

Thank You

Interesting that you have your current location as Buffalo, intending to go to MCP-Worcester. I, on the other hand moved from Worcester to go to Buffalo for pharmacy school!

Westborough will be quite a drive, probably 30min. There is plenty of places to rent for off campus housing, with the general rule of thumb: the further you move away from downtown, the cheaper it gets. Good luck!

I sent my deposit in October and still haven't received anything for housing...I think I'd want to live on campus because Worcester does not have good winters, plus my commute from home would be 1.5 hours. The singles looked good too when I saw them at the interview...I have a feeling I'll need a lot of space/quiet for 3 years of stress!

hi there,

i recently got accepted to MCPHS-Worcester, and was wondering if you could give me some feedback about the pharmacy school. How do you like the 3 year program? Do you live in the dorms or off campus? If off campus, where do you recommend?

I've been researching Bancroft Commons Apts, and I see a lot of bad reviews.

thanks for your time!

Hey!! First off, congrats for your acceptance.

feedback about the school... well, like any other school, we have some bad professors and some you just want to hug them. You have to keep in mind that it is a non-traditional program, it's 3 years accelerated, therefore, there is a lot of pressure and stress from having a heavier class-load than a regular 4-year school... since this school is for transfer students only, they expect us to be mature students, and some professors don't believe in spoonfeeding you, meaning they are not going to tell you "you have to know this, know that, this is a, this is b", they will teach you the information, but you will have to sort what is important that you need to know, but we also have some professors that will teach just like in undergraduate school.

I live in the dorms, which I find very convenient. I know a lot of people who live on 600 Main street, I don't know if that's bancrofts commons though, but 600 Main Street is the address. We have some others who live in the next town over, for cheaper living.

Good luck!

thanks for the quick reply greatdeals225.

So what year are you in pharmacy?

since you live in dorms, do they make students leave during holidays? Where is the laundry facility for students?

What is the typical time schedule for pharm students? like is there a usual time when classes are over?

are you involved with any school activities at MCPHS-W?

I'm a current P1

For worcester, they do not make students leave for the holidays, the dorms are open all year-round, which is good. The only time they make you free-up your room for the holidays is if you plan to change room or move off-campus the following semester.

The laundry facility is in the basement, they have a few washing machines and a few dryers, they are quarters operated but you can also buy a card and load money in it if you want to.

For schedules, it all depends, last semester, my latest class was until 3pm, and fridays we were over at 12:30, this semester, my latest class is until 4:20, but no classes on tuesdays except if you happened to be scheduled for a tuesday lab... it all depend on the semesters.

activities: i'm a member of APha as well as the CSA (Christian students association), i am not an officer, but I do attend meetings and other activities.. was that your question? Being an officer and being involved in activities is definitely doable if you know how to juggle your time and be organized. I know a few students who are officers in more than 1 club/association and I'm sure other SDN-ers from MCP-W will tell you the same

Problems at the dorms: do you mean noise-level? usually not really, if it bothers you and it's after quiet-hours, you can always call the security guard.

Since we are next to the DCU-center which hosts various events such as local sports games, conventions, concerts, you might be able to hear some noise depending on where your room looks out of, but it's only once a week, if that, and it's not that audible you can make out what's going on in there. Since we are next to a hospital, you will always hear siren sounds but i think we all learnt to tune that out after a few days or so....

Safety-wise, we have an escort to and from the garage to the school if you choose to use it, I wouldn't recommend going out by yourself at night, we have plenty of people going out in groups and walking to the nearby bars with no problem. Downtown is downtown.

There's a bank of american with ATm right across from the school, so you don't have to worry about that. There are also other banks nearby.

Grocery-store wise, we have honey-farms convenient store (similar to 7/11) right downstairs for quick solutions, if not, most grocery stores are within 2-4 miles from the school depending on which one you want to go to, we have local supermarkets as well as chains.

how does the visitor system work for the dorms? are there certain hours that we can have visitors come by and a certain time that they have to leave?

is there always a security guard around? I would feel more comfortable...safety first

I'm glad I can help.

For the visitor system, i think it's a max of 2 visitors for 2 nights every 10 days, basically, you should be fine. I don't think there are certain hours for visitors, there's a security guard 24 hours / 7 days so you can sign them in anytime and sign out anytime. There isn't a security guard at 19 Foster all the time (after the library closes for the night), but when they leave, the building is closed and no one has access to it.... so i would say, it's pretty secure inside the building. Commuters cannot access the resident floors, not even from the stairs, and commuters ID cannot open the doors to the buildings on weekends and nights, so the security guard has to let them in, making it even one step more secure for residents.... name tag and lanyard always has to be worn everywhere in the 2 buildings, and your lab coat has to be worn at the academic building (19 foster) during business hours...so you can easily spot out intruders :p

well, everyone's reasons are different, but I came here because it is an accelerated program coming from a quite famous school and it is quite close to my house as I come from Boston. I do like a school that is mainly focused on healthcare and this school fits my criteria.

Hey babygirl, dang I thought I had a lot of questions! I would try to answer all of them but I am in your shoes right now too. I think I can answer this one though:

i know at one pharm school, PDAs are being give to P1 students, does MCPHS-W do the same? Are they provided? or do you have to get one yourself?

Based on all the MCPHS threads I've read (and that is like ALL of them on SDN including the ones from years ago), I don't think students are given a PDA in their first year. It would probably help if you decide to work during your first year though. Of course greatdeals225 or someone else could verify this for you.

I would also like to know the answers to your other questions as well! I NEED rice. In fact I just ate four bowls of fried rice an hour ago...:p!

I am Asian and from out-of-state too! Where are you from?

greatdeals225
02-04-2008, 07:51 AM
o wow.... so many questions...

to confirm, PDAs are not given to us, you have to buy your own, but I wouldn't recommend buying one until at least your 2nd year, coz you really don't need one first year.

Rice, are you planning to drive or walk? i think i know 3 vietnamese stores total that are not far from here, but I wouldn't walk, there would be like at least 20 mns walking distance... i guess you can walk if you have to.

I don't know if they allow you to move in before move-in day, you will have to call registrar and check on that, they might charge you a bit extra to do that...

i think i answered all of them, if not, ask me again :p

well.. the new incoming students get to pick their selections after current students finish their selections. The priority is first come first served basis as to the forms they have you fill out. So basically, if you want to absolutely secure this dorm-style, you might want to overnight your form over. If you are choosing a 6-people, i don't think u'd have a problem, but if there are any 2 or 3 ppl styles left, then it all depends on how fast ur mailman delivers it over :p

Just to make sure again, the rooms are still singles regardless of whether they are in 2, 3, or 6-people style right?

Also, do the 2 and 3-people styles have just one bathroom and one kitchen? Is there maid service / housekeepers or is the cleaning completely up to the suitemates?

hmm... yea, the bedrooms are still single. Any apart 3ppl or greater have 2 bathrooms and every suite has 1 kitchen. There is no maid service... cleaning is up to the suitemates. They only have cleaning ppl for the public hallways.

School will send you guys a sketch of the suites and their styles when the time comes, so don't worry.

Thanks greatdeals. I have another question if you don't mind.

What do you know about the community pharmacy entrepreneurship program offered at MCPHS-Worcester? It seems like not many people talk about it even though I think it is a pretty unique aspect of MCPHS. All I know is pretty much what is said on the website, and also from a post DrugDealer once wrote:

"At my interview, I was told there were a few classes you take if you are interested in that pathway (they would be electives), and then you can partner with Amerisource Bergen to open your own pharmacy. I think you would have to get all your generics from them, but I don’t know if they help fund the start-up costs or loan money or anything. At orientation, the professor in charge briefly mentioned the program, just adding that you write a business plan in one of the classes. That’s about all I know."

Do you know anyone right now who is thinking of pursuing this option?

I asked about the option during orientation as well, my interviewer just introduced me to Dr. Kelly, and said that I would just have to take a couple more classes and said that there was a time we have to sign up by, but that there was a waiting list. I'm not really sure. You can always email the professor and ask him about it. His name is Edward Kelly

It is allowed outside of Worcester with conditions:

1. MCPHS need to have connections there (preceptors that will accept MCPHS students, as some preceptors are not 'registered' with MCPHS)

2. It is a lottery system, those students wishing to do rotations elsewhere need to be entered in a lottery system. I think you have to do at least 2 rotations in MA because that's where the school is located, therefore, i think half of the students wishing to do rotations elsewhere will do first half outside MA then last half in MA, the other 50% will do the opposite. I think that's how I understood it, if anyone thinks another way, please rectify.

That is how I understood it too, but this does bring up several new questions.

MCPHS has prepared more men and women for professional careers in pharmacy than any other academic institution in the world (http://www.mcphs.edu/about_mcphs/), but how much does this actually help? Since I'm from CA I really don't know anything about the East Coast or the New England area. Does MCPHS's huge alumni base actually help in terms of getting a job/residency position/etc. there? How are the students and the school viewed in the East in terms of prestige and stuff?

One factor I need to take into consideration later is how difficult it would be if I wanted to get a job in CA. CA is already filled with 7 and soon maybe 8 pharmacy schools. I am wondering if MCPHS alumni are all clumped in the NE area or if many are in CA too .

MCPHS is the 2nd oldest pharmacy school, it has networks all over the country. I don't know how easy/hard it would be for you to find a job in CA, you would have to ask your CA peers for that, but all I know is that pharmacy is still in demand.. so you shouldn't worry about that too much. I know at least a handful people, if not more in my class who are from CA...

and also since there aren't that many pharmacy schools in the new england area, MCPHS is well known.

i heard that no shorts were allowed. you will need to wear your white coat at all times when you are on campus. jeans, sneakers, and collar shirt should be fine.

you will recieve two letters. the first one saying that the admissions office has recieved your deposit and that you need to complete all your pre-reqs and turn in your official transcript before the semester starts (if you have not completed all your courses already). the second letter is going to inform you that you need certain immunizations/physicals before you attend. It will also tell you in brief form about a student orientation and you will get more info later in the future.

hope that helps and congrats!

do you all who have been p1's think that it would be doable to work weekends during the first semester? I know there are some holiday breaks and possibly the first 3 weeks of January? My hours would be sat and sun from 330p-1130p. (I have enough vacation time to take every weekday off till Jan and still get full time pay and a big holiday bonus if I make it till Jan.) Do you think I'm dreaming? (I have worked full time during undergrad maintaining 3.9)

Biochem professor is one of the BEST professors... You don't want to miss him. Plus, just get them A's since you will need those high grades for 2nd year. Usually, grades go down significantly in 2nd year and you don't advance to rotation if you don't meet the minimum GPA. So try to get as high gradge as you can in 1st year.

Good luck!

You need at least a 2.2 each semester to move on to the next. D's are okay but an F means you have to wait a whole year to repeat. From the current students I've spoken with, the first year = ridiculously easy/doable, while the second year = ridiculously hard/insane. The third year is when you are thankful for all the torture/preparation .

is that 2.2 min for each semester itself, or the overall gpa combined with each semester? so if u got a 2.0 in one semester but overall gpa was say 2.5, can u move on? thx

It's overall. So, if you have a BS/MS in biochem, get As from Biochem I & II.

Some more advices for in-coming students...
Try to maintain 3.0 in first year. If you can get 3.0 at the end of first year, then you are almost 100% safe to advance to rotation unless you do something seriously stupid(copying literature, cheating... or something). If 3.0 would be a bit challenging for you, then try to aim 2.7 at least. If you end up around 2.5 or below at the end of first year, your life would be difficult!! Also remember the summer in first year is hard so do your best in first and second semester.

First semester: every class is very easy BUT it goes very fast, there are a lot of materials and sooo many tests! The key is time management. Final is cumulative, so grades usually go down after final.

Second semester: easiest semester ever... get as high GPA as you can get! Lab is fun...

Good luck guys...

Hi, I know I already asked this and got an answer. But I was wondering if any current students can tell me what the dress code is? Specifically, can we wear capri/crop pants in the summer? Open toed shoes? I know jeans are pretty much acceptable, and that we have to wear the white coat. Is there a collared shirt requirement? All the school tells me is that professional attire is required. I need to go spend money now while I have it! :-)
Thanks

Hey Christine!

I had my interview back in November so it's been a while, but I can try to answer some of your questions.

This is what my schedule looked like (I don't know where in CA you are at, but either way you'll probably be flying to Logan Airport in Boston anyway):

Wednesday-Thursday, Nov. 28-29 (San Jose International to Logan Airport, Boston; and then to Worcester)
08:32pm - 06:48am :: Fly from San Jose, CA to Boston, MA
06:48am - 07:10am :: Bus from the airport to South Station via the Silver Line
08:00am - 08:55am :: Bus from South Station to Union Station, Worcester
08:55am - 09:05am :: Taxi to Crowne Plaza Hotel, Worcester

Friday, Nov. 30 (Worcester)
06:00am - 06:15am :: Wake up
06:15am - 08:20am :: Eat breakfast + get ready
08:20am - 08:40am :: Walk to MCPHS-Worcester
08:40am - 08:50am :: Wait in lobby
08:50am - 10:50am :: Interview day
10:50am - 11:10am :: Walk back to Crowne Plaza Worcester

When I went there, it was my first time too so I was nervous. The people there are all REALLY nice though! I asked for where to buy tickets and everything like a million times hehe.

The city is big, but you won't need to worry about it because the Union Station is close to MCPHS and Crowne Plaza (if you decide to stay there). That is all for now I really need to start studying for physio. PM me if you have any more questions. I'll try to respond in a timely manner :). GOOD LUCK!!

Every year the professors change something based on the previous year's feedbacks.. and I heard from my P3 roomate that therapeutics changed so much (for the better) this year for the P2s compared to her year... which is good!

They don't really care about sandals and open toes.. try not to wear flip flops though.. altho I see some people who wear them.. just don't run into the Dean i guess... :P

for ceutics lab, there's definitely no open-toe allowed (same dress code as for your organic chem labs with googles and stuff)... but for PPP lab in P1 summer, dress code is professional dress... tshirt, slacks.. coz you play the pharmacist there.. so have to dress as if you were going to work, right? :p

babygirl
03-16-2008, 08:26 PM
I know that some pharmacists wear scrubs to work (esp. those that work in the hospital)...is that okay for the PPP lab in the P1 summer?

I understand that you say that the PPP lab requires a professional dress code but Tshirts wouldn't be considered right? or is that okay with the professors? I was thinking more of like black pants, khakis, and long sleeve button up shirts.

so how is pharmacy school for you greatdeals?

we will wear our school lab coats for PPP lab on top of our dress code, i believe..so u dont' need to especially buy scrubs... I don't think khakis would do...

I didn't. If you are concerned about a class, the W is probably fine if the class isn't a prereq. Maybe you should call the admissions office to confirm though.

I had a few W's, one for chem I, soc I, and a few for classes that weren't prereqs. They were from about 7+ years ago though. I didnt retake them until last year.

Do any of you know when the book list comes out? And also, do we wait to apply for loans and such until after we receive our award package from the school? Thank you ;)

so far, all my exams have been cumulative

thick packets of notes.. yes.. but the exam is usually divided 50% new material and 50% old material, so in the 50% old material, basically it averages to about 2-3 questions per chapter, depending on the subject and professor.. so when we study for the final exam, basically we just study the new material as we would for any other exam, then we just study the general concepts or what we know the professor emphasized on the old chapters. Usually they will not ask anything that is written in micro-fonts.. if you know what i mean.. but usually the professors will tell you what you should focus on in the final exam (general things usually)

one thing that greatly helps is to study very well for your other exams.. so when the final comes, you kinda remember some of the material from the old exams....

I am sure that not every school is 100% perfect. We do provide feedback of the course and the professor teaching it at the end of the semesters, and every year the upperclassmen are telling us how this class has been changed this way, that professor changed this way...

as a p1, we have some professors we love, and some we don't really like, that goes true, i'm sure, with every school/major you have taken/will be taking. I think what I enjoyed most is being able to go to lecture everyday and seeing my friends..... :p

I will be attending MCPHS in the fall as well. Can you tell me if there is a MCPHS bookstore? ie a place to buy apparel and all that jazz. If I can buy textbooks through the site it'll definately be worth the membership fee.

We don't have a bookstore in Worcester, but you can always go to the Boston campus to buy any apparels. I believe there is a website to buy some of those things, but I don't know what it is. You can ask around when you get here, or maybe someone else on SDN can shed the light?!

For worcester, several student organizations will sell tshirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts outside your classrooms... usually for a week or so during fall ... so don't worry, they will be making announcements in class if that happens, or you can just see them sitting there with tons of apparels for you to choose from!..

I get my books at amazon.com or half.com, I don't do barnes and noble.. I don't know if they have better prices... or best yet, I buy the books from upperclassmen (hint hint!!) those are usually cheapest, if not, they should be comparable to amazon or half.com prices and you save on shipping time and the uncertainty of getting ur books in a bad condition...

Hey,

our testing blocks are tuesday/thursday 2 hours after classes end. some professors (biochem) have exams on testing blocks because it gives us more time (biochem class is only 50 minutes), the other classes usually have exams during class time. Last semester we ended class at 12:20 on fridays.. so if u guys have the same schedule, u can go home after that :D

Manchester has a total of about 40 students in your class.

Advantage: smaller class size, you end up knowing everyone
For electives starting summer P1, you guys dont' have as much of a selection as Worcester because your class size is smaller
Disadvantage: Most of the professors teach in Worcester, so you'd have to look at them through distance ed (that TV they showed you during orientation) and when you talk, you talk thru microphones... altho some professors are based in manchester, they teach in manchester as well. Depends if you are a student who needs to go see professors during office hours or can you just be satisfied with emails.

Worcester: classes are bigger, you have more electives to choose from, but that means you have more students fighting for that elective as well. You won't know everyone, but you will get to know who is and isn't P1.

Both places have different "life-styles". Worcester and manchester are diff cities, different things to do.

I'm sure there are other threads going over the comparisons. Try to go into older threads.. i'm sure there are comparisons... coz we were asking those last year too when we were applying!

Thank you very much for your help, but am still a little bit nervous about starting my first year at MCPHS. I am an international student, and this is my first time living alone in the states.

If you don’t mind I have some questions.

What are the most difficulties you faced in your first year? And from the 150 students the school accepts every year, how many finish the program in three.

And again thanks for the help, and sorry if am asking a lot of questions:):).

I dont' know how many people do finish iin 3 years exactly tho.. maybe someone else can shed the light on this.

Hahaha, I'm right there with you kryptonite, but I think opportunities for partying are going to be limited wherever you live. I don't anticipate having much free time for that, but I'm glad you're optimistic...

MCP-W rules: no alcohol on campus, anywhere including residence halls.

what you do behind closed doors is not anyone's problem, except if you have people complaining, and public safety has to come to your door, and sees/suspects alcohol, you can get in trouble, if you know what i mean.

Resident students here all like to party, i'm sure, but there isn't much time. However, when there is, they usually walk to Irish Times Pub (5 minutes away, not even), or they drive to other bars which are very close by as well.

Greatdeals,
I was wondering if anyone ever moves out of the on-campus apartments mid-year, or if they only do year-long leases. I'm really not digging the idea of the alcohol and visitor limits, however I do want to get myself settled in the area before I look at off-campus apartments.

I am not sure, sorry. You'll be better off calling the Resident Director directly or Financial aid office, i'm sure they'll know to direct you if it's the wrong office, but let me know how it goes!

I wanted to add to it that anything that you do, it is courtesy to respect quiet times/study times first, meaning if you think that you can have parties in between exams, it is fine, but make sure that your roomates are okay too, which is kind of a limitation for on-campus.

Hold the phone: no alcohol in the dorms, at all? Aren't most of us going to be over 21 anyway because we're all technically "transfer" students?

I'm not a lush, or anything, but that just doesn't make sense to me

It's probably just the policy to respect everyone's space/time. Its obviously a really intense program and your roomate's might not want you partying while they're trying to study. I highly doubt if you're over 21 an RA is gonna give you a hard time about having some beer or wine with dinner, but partying is probably out of the question. Yet another reason I will be living off-campus. Dorm life is for the birds.

I was also accepted to Manchester and starting this fall. I am originally from Maine, so I know the area a tad... The way things were explained to me is that at Manchester almost all the classes are ITV from Worcester, so the teachers are there and we just watch them. The campus at Manchester is just one building, so they don't have dorms and all that Jazz, but they do have communter lounges, computer lab, etc. I am not certain if I am going to get a roomate or an efficency somewhere. It would be more cost efective to get a roomate but I dont want to end up with some yahoo that is going to bother my studies for the next 2 years and 9 months. Anyway, to all the people accepted congrats.. I will see you on campus or by TV in the fall!

Can anyone tell me how much it costs to live in MCP-W campus?

Costs of the dorms depends on what style you want.

The cheapest is the 6-person reduced rate: basically you get a twin (single) bed as opposed to a full bed that all other people get. your room is smaller, but it's also cheapest. I believe it's around $6200 as opposed to ~$8600 for the other 6-people rooms.

2 people can range anywhere from ~$8600 to ~$10,200 depending on the style. Some 2-people apartments have bigger kitchen, bigger living room... etc... and others have very small living area in general.

3-4 people apartments are ~$9600

Studios (single person apart.) are the highest, ~$10,200 I believe.

Yea those figures are for the whole year.

Greatdeals do you know which of the styles are already unavailable? I got my housing packet (omg kinda exciting! :D) but am kind of confused as to how many of the choices I can pick. I mean, do I check one and only one, or do I do a number system 1, 2, 3, ..., with 1 being the style most preferred?

Hello everyone!!!!
Wish I could reply to all the alcohol comments earlier.

OK before I start I'm not trying to offend anyone in any way or trying to scare you guys so don't get mad at me for being honest.

You have to realize you are coming into an accelerated program.
You will have 2 (and sometimes 3) exams every week in the Fall semester. The work piles up fast if you don't keep up, partying every weekend will make it hard for you to do well. HOWEVER, if you party on Friday nights once a week thats not going to affect your grades if you manage your time well. If you finished studying for your 2 (or 3) exams the coming week no one can stop you from getting wasted I promise. Ive been to a few dorm parties and there has been TONS of alcohol, so like greatdeals said as long as your suite mates are cool with it and you don't make too much noise it wont be a big issue to throw a party here and there.

Again I am not trying offend anyone butbasing where you live on the fact that you wont be throw parties or have alcohol in your apartment is not a good idea. Yes I know its hard (I'm 22 and all I want to do is go out and party) but you should be willing sacrifice your weekends so you can catchup on the weeks material that you didn't pay attention to since you were studying for the 2 (or 3) exams you had.

The good news is the spring semester is slightly easier. Fewer exams (same amount of work) allow you to have more free time. Today we took our last exam for the semester so we have 2 whole weeks without EXAMS!!!!

Arite future P1s I'm going to go pay more attention to my drink now, Its not going to finish itself on its own (YES WE ARE ALL GOING OUT TONIGHT TO PARTY OUR B**TS OFF!!! and YEP I was tipsy while I was writing out this reply).

greatdeals225

Thanks for the added comments. As I mentioned earlier, just be courteous to your roomates.

To reply the dorm comment, the figures are for the whole year. I do not know which ones are not available because I am not part of ResLife staff, so I can't really tell you. HOwever, last year, I only got the sketches of the apartments that were available to us. Sometimes there's 1 room available, sometimes there's 1 unit, we don't know.

What I suggest is, fill it out and overnight it if you are looking for anything more than a 6-person, because I don't think there's many of the smaller apartments left (just my guess).

I believe you can put down your preference and rank it 1,2,3 and the res director will try to accomodate that as much as he can. You may also put preferences for roomates according to your lifestyle, but that's a little bit stretching the limitations... just my guess

Good luck everyone~

Hey Greatdeals,

Should I buy 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch binders?? :-) or bigger!? yikes..

1 inch is definitely too small... altho I have some 1 inches.. it all depend on the class. Some classes, the course packet they give you is pretty thick, so you'd need at least a 2 inch for those. some of them are okay size, using a 1 inch is like very tight, using 1 1/2 might be better. but some ppl use 1 inch coz we don't take the whole course packet to class (too heavy), we just take the lecture for the day and maybe the next class (in case the prof goes fast and wants to start the next lecture ahead)... u will need a 2 1/2 - 3 inch for the spring for your portfolio tho.. so 1 of those might not be a bad idea if u see one on sale... altho we do have target/walmart/staples around here u can buy those instead of bringing them over.

will we get our packets at oriention? should I wait to see what class has what size packets?

The packets are for one semester only, even for the two part classes. I think we got our packets the second day of orientation.

From what I had at the end of the semester Patho/Physio and US health end up needing bigger binders than any other class. For US Health you get half the packet when the semester starts and the other half during the course of the semester. I would get a 2 inch binder for those two classes. However, like greatdeals said you don't need to take the whole packet to class anyway so its not necessary to get a big binder for class but it would be a good idea just so you can keep things organized.

Yes you will definitely need a 2½ - 3 inch binder for the spring
They ask us to keep a portfolio in our Intro to pharmaceutical care 2 (IPC 2) class.
This is a 2 semester hour class that meets once a week and requires you to do 3 hours of shadowing at an allocated location (community pharmacy or institutional pharmacy) every other week. The class is structured in such a way that the first hour you will have a guest speaker come in and talk about different fields of pharmacy, their personal experiences, and how they got to where they are now. The second hour you will discuss either your shadowing experiences or something random the professors want to talk about. You write reflective entries for every speaker and place it in your portfolio. You also write reflections for the shadowing portion of the course.

The portfolio consists of several other sections but the main portion consists of an OTC drug digest. Basically you have to look up generic names, brand names, manufacture, mechanism of action, indication, dosage form, dosage, and much more for all OTC drugs. They ask you to do one or two therapeutic classes per week (for example, Week 1 - Pain and Fever, Week 2&3 Gastrointestinal) and you have to maintain it over the course of the semester. This digest will serve as a reference for us when we take "nonprescription medications" in the summer.

Its pretty simple so don't stress too much about the portfolio because they will teach you how to use tertiary resources to look up all the information you need to include in the digest.

Which room-style did you choose? if you're choosing a 6-person, you shouldn't have a problem. Sometimes, the 2 or 3-ppl are the last chosen because they are more expensive, on the other hand, they are the fewest.

I ended up doing a # system, so I numbered them each from 1-6 lol. Looks like I might end up with a 6-person unit since most of the rooms are probably filled already (the 6-person reduced rate was my very last option though).

Yea I hope I can live on-campus too for at least my first year. It'd help me a lot in adjusting to a new place and all. LALALA :)

hey everyone,
I was just wondering when we will find out what books we need to buy. Hopefully it is soon so I can buy them online! In addition, when do we get to get our lones after they send us what we can get in the mail?

for the books, I think you will find out either june or beginning july, i don't really remember.. but i remember you had at least a whole month if you wanted to get ur books online.. etc..

for the loans, i believe you have to fill out the loan initiation interview (online).. there should be directions that came in with ur financial letter, once u do that 'interview' then your bill will be taken care of, the loan dpt doesn't send u a check to pay off ur bill, it goes directly to school..
i hope that answered ur question

Thanks greatdeals for being so resourceful...:D

Do P1 students there study off of the required text books or do most of them use the summary books to study instead? If yes, what were some of the titles and authors for the first semester (fall p1)?

The reason I ask is because I know med students use summary books instead of the text books since they don't have time.

Also, were there anything you wished you had studied or reviewed before you went into the program?

We study off the course packet (aka: powerpoint slides) :p basically none of the professors (so far) have had exam questions based on textbooks (except for healthcare, which puts emphasis on the two books she requires, but they are very cheap and easy to read, i forgot the names),

Textbooks are just supplemental to topics you don't understand.

I hope this helped.

this is probably a stupid question, but is this all going to be cleared up during orientation? like what textbooks we need, etc?? :)

hey greatdeals, whenever you have time would you be able to tell us the books that you actually use/dont use at all for fall semester?

okay.. let me see.. the books you use or don't use is really up to you, depending on how you study. I like to read books because the powerpoint from the professors are just bullet points.. I memorize better when it's in paragraphs... I understand better that way. However:

IPC: the professor makes you read 1-2 (don't remember) chapters of this little book, it is actually good book for those with no pharmacy experience, for those that do have experience, you don't have to get it if you don't want to... she doesn't test on those readings, but it's for understanding, if you don't have experience, the whole book will make pharmacy clearer for you, + it's not expensive at all.

Biochemistry: The book is supplement only, sometimes I like the book because you can see the pictures much bigger than on the slides. You can also buy the study guide, which I found really really helpful for summarizing important points of the chapters and explaining to you in a simplier language than the book itself does. The book and study guide will also be used during spring, so you're basically buying 2 books for the price of one since it's used for 2 semesters.

Healthcare: you have to buy those 2 books. She stresses that her powerpoints are supplemental to the book, and she does test you on things never said in class but that the book mentioned. They are not expensive either, so just to save yourself some hassle, get the books. +, the class is 4 cr, and it's one of the hardest classes for fall (imo)

Pharmaceutics: I don't know which professor you'll be having, we had a new one different from the P2s, but if you have the one that I had, dr Mididdoddi, I would get the book to supplement what he teaches, because it's a little bit hard to get his point sometimes, and the book is a good reference for Spring when you are doing pharmaceutics lab

Pharmacy Law: no book required for the class

Physio: the book required is actually used in the summer as well. She requires 1 of them, and recommends 2 others. I personally don't like the one required, I like the one that's recommended better, but I read the book for all those chapters.. hey, what can I say, physio/pathophys is not my strong subject :p

Service Learning: no book

I hope i didn't forget anything. If you guys need books, i'm sure that some of the P1s this year (my class) have books they probably want to see back because we won't be using them, myself included. Look for flyers when u guys get here!

Greatdeals,

Do you live on campus? Do you recommend having a car for people living on campus? and where do students on campus park their cars? Are there fees/permits required?

Do you recommend having a car that is 4 wheel drive since there will be lots of snow?

:D

I do live on campus. Almost every semester you will be committed to travelling off campus for either service learning (once a week), for shadowing (once every other week) or rotations. I would recommend a car. Those that don't have a car have gotten very lucky and got sites assigned very close to campus or bus-accessible. Worcester is not like London, it's doesn't have that much public-transportation, altho better than california... (except SF) lol...

We park our car at the garage across from the hospital, which is 2 blocks from here, it's directly behind the garage right next door. THe parking fees are subsidized thru school and are $120 per semester for us. It's a first come first serve basis.

If you have a four-wheel drive, bring it, if not, you can do with a front wheel drive. I personally drive a civic, so it's not four-wheel drive. If you have a rear-wheel drive, don't bring it, it will skid in the snow, altho you can always park it at the garage during winter times, but you will have to pay for the spot with ur fees... lol..

For the service learning, how many students are scheduled at the same site and time? or is only like one student scheduled at a specific time and other students with different hours.

about when are we able to buy permits for parking?

also, what was the hardest class for fall p1 in your opinion and majority of students?

students assigned at service learning sites depend on the site. Some sites need more students and some others only have that much allowed.

hardest class really depends on what your strengths are. 4 credit classes to me seem harder (and majority) but some people Ace the class and find others hard.. hard to tell...

i'll have to hold off answering questions until after 1st week of May.. finals are only 10 days away! and we have to study for 6 finals.. taken in 5 days.. nuts!

Hi to all my soon-to-be P1 peers,

I'm trying to get a consensus how many of you filled out your FAFSA's already?

Also, how and when is a good time to apply for scholarships? I heard that you apply for them automatically if you fill out a FAFSA.

Also, what's the interest rate on the MCPHS student loans? I wonder if Sallie Mae has cheaper rates if you go through them, albeit more paperwork.

Thanks guys for answering my questions

Hi. I know I've asked this before, but I figured we prob have more admitted students by now. Is anyone else commuting from CT?? I'm sure nobody is, but if so I would be interested in car pooling thanks to the almost $4 bucks a gallon I am paying! I am figuring about 5K/year for gas alone (50 miles one way). Eeew. P.S. Are all you P1/P2's done with finals yet?
