Anyone?

I'm pretty excited about it... its going to be my first one. :D

Im going to try my darndest to get there! If I do go it will be my fourth(New Orleans, St. Louis, Atlanta, and hopefully New York!). Me and my classmates are trying to get our postbacc to help pay for something. We will see.

I really wanted to go (it would be my first time) but we have a test week right during the week of the conference.

I'll probably be going since I'm already in the area and wouldn't need to pay for anything (other than the registration fees). This would be my first time at the conference.

I'm pretty sure I'm going as well. I went last year in San Francisco, and the conference was extremely helpful before the application season started. I'm not sure how much I'll get out of it this year since I'm between pre-med and med, but I'm pretty much going to visit my friends I graduated with (and make new ones!)

To those who have been to one, what do you do there? how is it structured? are there any dos and don'ts that a newbie needs to be aware of?

basically you just goto short meetings/lectures during the day, and party it up at night.

I will be there as well. I am looking forward to it since it is during my spring break and this will be my first genuine time in NY (other times...just passing through the city from one airport to another).

I havent decided yet, but I'm always down for a trip to NY. It will depend on my classes, interviews (hopefully), and $$

I'm registered, got my ticket, and OH SO ready to go!!! I have never been to NY, so that will be an experience in itself...but since I am just now applying (hopefully soon I'll be able to say that I've been accepted!) to medical school...I really can't wait for a weekend surrounded by young people who look like me and have their 'stuff' together! I just love being around positive professional young minorities...can't wait!

Yea i'll be there too, coming with my school's Charles Drew Pre-Health society.. and like Optimystik said, I'm definitely looking forward to networking with my fellow minorities doing and aspiring for such big things!! :thumbup:

Please go to this conf. I have been attending every year in college (Atlanta and San Fran.) This is the huge networking opportunity, every part of this event allows you to build relationships with people who look just like you and will try their best to help you. Just from going these past two years, so many doors have been open and so many people are helping me on my way to medical school from helping w/ personal statements to visiting medical school and having a place to stay to internships....I think you really should experience this regardless of the cost! You will love it!:love: I love SNMA....

I cannot attend this year...three exams in one week....so have fun and talk to as many people as you can from students like us to doctors, professors and medical students!

Yeah, a lot of people are telling me that that's the place to be on Thurs. night, so despite the fact that I have to work on Friday, I'll probably be there.

He was kinda meh. The first thing he said was "I bet you all are wondering why I'm here." And everyone was like "yeah, we are." But he never really fully answered this question imo. He spent his time talking about how he wanted to make the role of Dr. Burke a pristine example of an African American surgeon. During his research of the role he came to admire the work that doctors do. He spent the rest of his time speaking about his work in Sri Lanka which I think is very admirable. But, as a keynote speaker for Saturday's banquet I felt he left a lot to be desired. He got half a standing ovation after his speech.

On the other hand, Hopkins' Dr. Watkins spoke for Friday's president's luncheon and he was fantastic! He got a full standing O.

I didn't go to the banquet because I didn't know it was for all attendees, and I was staying w/ my cuz in NJ so I didn't want to have to go back through the tunnel or up to 5th ave to go shopping for the event (hate being under dressed for that kind of event). The pre med speaker was very good, and put perspective on the path she took to becming a Dr. Thursday was a mess (IMHO), mainly because the registration was delayed apparently due to a storm which delayed supplies. Since I didn't print the itennary assuming there might be changes I didn't get this information until 5 PM, when I had to miss one of the sessions I wanted to attend. So in that respect I was dissapointed. Most of the sessions I attended were good, some were cancled, but I decided to take advantage of the day. I went into the residency recruitment fair and networked. I met lots of good people, and made a connection for the possibility of a mentor. I met a bunch of recent HU grads, and one person who matched to HUCM for ortho. I got impromptu advice from people about interviews which was really helpful because they made points I hadn't thought about. I went to the conference solo, so it was nice to meet people. I went to the match party...but didn't really enjoy it although the 2nd dj was much better. The party the next night went against every rule I have regarding going out, paying for events, and waiting in line. If other people I just met were not waiting for me inside than I would have gone somewhere else. I registered late, so I spent more than some, but it probably just about balanced out with parking and the tunnels/gas. All in all I was very glad I went, even if just to network and not attend any of the sessions. *If* I'm in school for the next one in NO, then I'll definitly try to go, and maybe work on raising $ w/ the local chapter, or applying for scholarships or something. I definitly want to be involved with the organization as I move through school.

For the med stuff, the only thing I remember cancelled was the post-banquet party. By this point I think a lot of people were tired from the previous couple of days and nights, and just wanted to chill. Many people went to bed early to get up to go to church in the morning (it was Easter weekend).

I didn't attend too many of the workshops because I was busy with regional meetings and House of Delegates stuff but from what I heard they were good. Mostly though, AMEC is about seeing old buddies, meeting new ones, and networking/connecting with the URM medical community. In this regard it was WELL worth the money (that my chapter paid). Where else can you get that many URM pre-meds, meds, and docs together in one hotel? That, in of itself is worth being there.

Oh yeah, and that party on Fri. was something else!

I thought it was a little disorganized compared to last year (San Francisco). All in all it was fun and it is so nice to see all those determined and professional minorities.
