So in evaluating programs, the fellowship match list is certainly an important aspect. However, I don't know if I have a good idea of what qualities a "good" fellowship match list has. Do you look at how many people are matching in Cards and GI? Do you look at how many people at matching at programs like the Brigham, or Duke, or UCSF? A lot of match lists at programs I interviewed at have a good portion of the residents staying at their home program, but I don't know what to make of that. I can understand that a lot of residents have spouses and families so not moving is a priority for them, and that some residents have ongoing research projects that they want to continue. However, what does one take from a match list where 50% of the residents stay at their home program? Is it because the program is good, or because they can't match elsewhere? Any thoughts on this matter?

first of all, find out how many people out of each class matched into their fellowship of choice. find out if anybody has had trouble matching. as far as people staying at their home program, i think that's a good thing- it shows the fellowship takes their own, and that the fellowship program directors value the education their home program residents get. also look at people who match into top programs.
