Hello all..

I am a lazy medical student who wants to have vacation time when she grows up!! but I really like the feel of teaching hospitals and would like to work in one. Does any one out there have experience to offer me about how much vacation time hospitals give per year (in IM or particularly, CCM). I really hope it's more than 3 weeks! I'm hoping more like 9. What about working part of the year at a time?

thank you!

9 weeks, that's funny :p

If you look around, you can find some programs that give 4 weeks of vacation, plus they give 5 days off at Christmas or new years. If you make it through 3 years of IM residency, you can become a hospitalist which has a 7 days on / 7 days off schedule.

I heard traveling carnivals give up to 12 weeks vacation. You should look into that.

:laugh:awesome! I am participating in one and taking applications. You may forward your ERAS one if you are that lazy.

When you say "when she grows up" do you mean when you're a faculty member, or resident?

I generally don't think people in IM are "lazy" if that's what you want to call it. Perhaps you should think about another specialty, or even profession if lifestyle is a huge driver for you. On the other hand, I doubt most academic faculty members work 80-hours/week for 40+ weeks/year.

You should check out radiology. Some of the lesser academic places will offer a bit of vacation to keep up with the 12-16 weeks of vacation/yr you hear about in private practice.

Looking back at the OP's question, it seems she was trying to gauge how much time faculty at academic places generally have for vacation. I think this is a reasonable question regardless of one's enthusiasm for the profession. I'm also curious to know the answer . . .
