Hi All,

Does anyone know of any research funding available to residents for their research projects during residency? I am nearly finished with my program and I thought it would be great to start working on a grant right now. I figure it will get rejected the first go around anyway. I looked at the NIH, but I couldn't make much of it for residency because of the time restrictions like 75% or 100% time.

I'd appreciate any help on this. Websites, grants types, whether it is even worth it.

Thanks!

The NIH K series (http://grants.nih.gov/training/careerdevelopmentawards.htm) is all I know of. Depending upon your project/research area you can check out professional societies and disease agencies. For example, if you studied gait mechanics in children with cerebral palsy, you could look at:

NINDS (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/) <- NIH center
GCMAS (http://www.gcmas.net/cms/index.php) <- gait society
POSNA (http://www.posna.org/web/home/home.html) <- peds ortho society

All of them have professional development grants of variable sizes (5k for lab supplies -> 30k career development clinic time buy-downs).

There is no such grant mechanism mainly because your job during residency is your clinical training. Some K grants are available during fellowship because you will have protected research time. Your research during residency will be funded by the grants of the faculty you will work with or departmental funds.
