View Full Version : Anyone taking the DAT for the heck of it?
dantheman2007 03-02-2008, 08:14 PM Hi,
i dont think this is allowed but I thought about taking the DAT just for fun and see what it's like now that I dont have the pressure.
Would u know if this a problem? if not, anyone thinking of doing it?
good luck,
dan
Bizznet 03-02-2008, 08:16 PM go for it... shouldn't be a problem at all.
SHC1984 03-02-2008, 08:30 PM It will be a problem if you do bad on it...you can't "hide" a DAT score from a school once you take it...when you report future scores your old scores will show too...
eldirty 03-02-2008, 08:46 PM it must be nice to have an extra $190 to spend on a "fun" 4 hour + test.

it's 190 now?
wow, amazing inflation
yorkiepoo 03-02-2008, 09:46 PM even if it was $100, who would spend that kind of cash and time for no reason? if you really want, go to a Kaplan center and take a FREE practice one.
darn over achievers ;)
SanOnofre2002 03-02-2008, 10:56 PM It would be fun to wing some test you haven't studied for instead. Go take the LSAT. If you get bored halfway through, you could act like you're having a nervous breakdown and make a big scene in front of everyone. Perhaps start sobbing uncontrollably and curl up in a fetal position. Have someone record this if you do it so I can see it.

If he was accepted already, it shouldn’t be a problem. He wouldn’t have to send out any new score reports.
Personally I see no better way to use ~$150. :D

Montserrat 03-03-2008, 01:06 PM At stupid is this may (likely) sound, I've been contemplating retaking the DAT because I was pissed about my QR and PAT score (still). After receiving an acceptance, the pressure is off and all I'm feeling is that competitive juice flowing. I left that exam after retaking it thinking I could have done better, and I want to see if I can get a high 20. I understand and remember the format and material well enough, so I'm thinking of throwing it in before the early summer. So to answer your question, yep, dorks unite.
FutureDentist3 03-03-2008, 01:10 PM bad idea taking the DAT for fun. admissions people have told me that they don't consider ppl who have taken it more than twice. wingin it, will leave you with only one chance at the exam once you're ready. on top of that all ur DAT scores get sent out to schools. taking an LSAT does sound like the way to go, especially if you can cause a scene in the middle of it. lol.
1992Corolla 03-03-2008, 01:25 PM why don't you go and do something else for fun instead?
:thumbdown

I think most of the people saying this have already been accepted. Hence the doing it for fun now that is doesn’t matter at all.
on top of that all ur DAT scores get sent out to schools.
Only if the schools are selected when registering for the test.
rose786 03-03-2008, 04:23 PM This is sadistic. And a waste of money. Give it to me instead. :D

You're kidding right?
I have a better idea: go to the bank and withdraw that $150 that you would've spent on the DAT, making sure you request it in ones. Then go to Mons Venus.
jb!:)
tinman831 03-03-2008, 05:23 PM Moving to DAT. Oh and yeah, waste of time and money to take it "for fun".

Nope, not kidding. I've lived frugally enough for the past two years, so it's not that much of a hit.
I don't expect you or anyone else to understand. But then again, after I take the DAT (third time), and set out on a two-three month rock climbing trip to France, I'll still be having a better time than most. Mons Venus ? Not my style.
Peace.

Well, what you decide to do is ultimately your own perogative and right, but I gotta say taking the DAT for "fun" is one of the most masochistic ideas I have heard in a while. I suppose I can understand if you think you can do better; after coming out of my test, in which I did alright, I also too did feel that I could have done better as well, particularly in math and reading. But there is no way I'd spend that money and time just to take it again, when the crux of the issue (acceptance) has already been decided. But then again, to each his own.

How could you have done much better than 25 in QR and 24 in RC?

I actually consider myself a very strong math person (I took calculus as a high school freshman and college differential/vector calculus as a high school junior), so I think I can probably squeeze out a couple of more points in math. Reading is also probable as well. Since I got a 26.4, any point increase would give me one more AA point. But then again, there no guarantee that I can maintain the scores in the other sections.
But back to the main point--this is a weird notion of "fun."
eldirty 03-04-2008, 09:33 AM Shunwei ... quite possibly the most amazing predents profile ever in existence. Let me guess, you got close to a 1600 on the SAT as well? How did you prepare for the DAT?

I'm not the smartest guy out there, but my memory retention is fairly decent. Took a online Kaplan diagnostic exam, and it turned out pretty well. I don't feel more text preparation will help my score, but understanding the format better is what I think will put me over the top. Your average was higher than mine - I pulled a 25.8, but my OC and QR scores could have been much, much better, as I have improved on those old rusty math skills for the past few months. Depending on the type of exam offered, I may well do worse (assuming 27's as the penultimate high score for certain sections). However, it would be a mistake to call if fun - it's just something that I want to do, for myself.
dantheman2007 03-04-2008, 12:40 PM i decided against taking the test again.
will spend the money for better use

Good call.
It must be the male ego that causes one to consider such things, no offense.

Well heck, if you want to drag gender into it - not retaking it could be the female conceptualization of accepting mediocrity, no offense.

You forgot the modern day social faux pas:
If a woman calls a man bullheaded and egotistical, she's a strong, confident modern day woman. If a man calls a woman the same, he's being sexist. duh.

Wow, I guess I hit a nerve there. I actually have just finished psychology research on competitiveness in relation to gender. I have the topic fresh in my mind, that's the only reason I brought it up.
rose786 03-04-2008, 05:37 PM Well heck, if you want to drag gender into it - not retaking it could be the female conceptualization of accepting mediocrity, no offense.
How is it accepting mediocrity if you've already been accepted?
Montserrat 03-04-2008, 06:41 PM Don't worry about it. I spent a good ten seconds reading your post - sadly, ten seconds I can never have back. Therefore, I decided to post something equally as foolish (if not more) to waste an equivalent amount of your time if you read it. Parity = good.
But about mediocrity ... you assume the exam exists exclusively as a means of gaining entrance to dental school. While this is in part true, I also see it as a way to bring out the best in what I can offer. See the difference ?
rose786 03-04-2008, 07:30 PM I don't see what you are getting so worked up about. It was just an opinion, jeez. Add to that, my comment wasn't even directed at you. Get over yourself. /silliness
Montserrat 03-05-2008, 09:47 AM I'm not getting worked up over it, just responding to your silly comment with a silly comment of my own. Perhaps it would have been better if I responded:
LOLOLOLZZ. You so right. I = ego larger than everest. lulz.
Now that, is /sillyness.
