View Full Version : Shenandoah C/O 2012
jasonargos 03-12-2008, 01:21 PM Now we've got a central thread to discuss everything for students starting this Fall. Housing, Loans, Roommates, Paperwork, and whatever else comes up.
I'll amend this post as people add information regarding housing.
Let's all introduce ourselves. Where are you from? Looking for a roommate? Undergrad school/degree?
I'm coming from Florida, looking for a roommate or two to split an apartment or, even better, a townhouse/house for rent that we'll have to find. I hear the housing market opens up in May/June so I'm shooting to find a place around then and sign to move in late June-early July. Just graduated from USF in Tampa, Fl with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences, the generic pre-health degree everyone there gets.
Congratulations to all who are accepted and good luck to everyone waiting on an interview.
Most of this is from previous Shenandoah threads and just searching online. I can't answer questions about any of the places, but hopefully someone who is a current student, or lives nearby can.
Your best bet is to call about prices and questions. I sent off some emails that never received replies. If you find anything out about one of these places, or a new place, do add it to the thread and I'll update this post.
Pemberton and Stuart Hill. Right next to each other and many students live at these two places.
Pemberton (http://www.rentalpropertiesmonthly.com/winchester/aikensgroup.html) is 540-678-4100
Stuart Hill Apartments (http://www.stuart-hill.com) 540-542-1940
Peppertree (http://www.rentalpropertiesmonthly.com/winchester/peppertree.html), some students say it is a cheaper option but the area/building reflects that. 540-667-5167
Shenandoah's Site for Off-Campus Housing (http://su.edu/parents/pp6.asp)
Autumn Wind Apartments (http://www.rentalpropertiesmonthly.com/winchester/autumnwind.html) 866-516-0685
Preston Place Apartments, 540-662-2292
Rental Properties Monthly (http://www.rentalpropertiesmonthly.com/winchester.html)Good resource for rental information
Winchester Rentals (http://www.winchesterrentals.com/) Blank right now, but might be useful towards summer.
Pagebrooke Developments (http://www.pagebrooke.com/apartment.html)- Lists several apartments/complexes with spaces for rent.
Feel free to add/correct anything you find out.
Shprot 03-13-2008, 07:22 PM Congrats to all who got accepted!
I am from Orlando, Florida myself and I am also interested in finding a roomate as well. I think I would probably prefer to have just 1 roomate with similar interests in apt complex by the school, but I am pretty flexible. Do you guys know for sure which campus are you going to be at, because they haven't told me anything about that so far.
Well, I guess, welcome to the "family" everyone!!!
bekman 03-14-2008, 12:59 AM I've been in for a while, but waited until I had seen my three higher picks before I ultimately decided that Shenandoah was actually the best of all four. I hope everyone else liked it as much as I did.
I'm from Columbia, Missouri, am about to graduate with a BA in Biology, am 26 years old and have a wife of three years. We are visiting Winchester in April to get some things nailed down. We are kind of iffy about housing, but are leaning towards buying a lot and dropping a double-wide. Anything has to be better than $1300/month.
Congrats to all who are coming with me to Winchester. I'm looking forward to meeting you!
Kyle
elr0019 03-17-2008, 08:13 PM I'm currently living in Dallas, TX and i'm pretty nervous about leaving and going so far from here. I'll probably be making another trip up early this summer to look into an apt but I'm considering a roommate so any females need one let me know
elr0019 03-17-2008, 08:17 PM So are any of you planning on working while going to school??? I've had a job since the age of 15 and i'm kinda stressing about the financial situation. Not having an income is freaking me out! I've already applied for financial aid, so i guess we'll see how that works out :/ Man, I'm really gonna miss mexican food...
jasonargos 03-17-2008, 09:46 PM I hope to have a job, but only one or two shifts a week depending on how it goes with school and studying. Work during the summers too.
Why would you have to miss mexican food? Granted there won't be as many places as there probably are in texas, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't somewhere with decent food of any type in the area. It's a small town, but it's not an island!
Tiger12k5 03-18-2008, 10:37 PM I'll be coming from Fort Worth, TX and I know what you mean about missing mexican food elr0019. I'm not sure about the campus situation, but I'm also a female considering a roommate. I look forward to meeting everyone!
bekman 03-21-2008, 11:03 AM For anybody interested in joining the Facebook group
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=11848531337
And I don't know if there will be many mexican restaurants or not, but there is a large hispanic population that will likely have one or two entrepreneurs.

Oh wow, that's pretty cool you're coming from Fort Worth. When are you planning on moving up or visiting next? I was thinking about going up in May or June to look at some places to live. If you decide to go the roommate route, let me know and maybe we can exchange emails or something.
bekman 03-28-2008, 02:07 AM I'm looking at building a house and a carriage house. I'm hoping to rent out 2 bedroom 2 bath with a 2 car garage for the totally separate carriage house. It likely won't be built until late July.
ANXIOUSnSCARED 03-29-2008, 11:12 PM hey guys, i just got my acceptance email last thursday!! IHaven't gotten more info about anything except the email saying im accepted, but yea, i should get it soon
elr0019 03-31-2008, 07:53 PM hey guys, i just got my acceptance email last thursday!! I am also looking for a roommate to share an apt near campus. Haven't gotten more info about anything except the email saying im accepted, but yea, if anyone's interested in living with a 22 year old guy from California pm me...haha
Hey congratulations!
WVUkeyser 04-02-2008, 08:40 AM Congrats to everyone that got in! I'm also looking for a roommate. I'm 21 and from west virginia. i'm looking for another guy to room with who has similar interests like sports (big soccer fan) and complaining about how hard classes are...you know the usual college guy stuff. anybody interested PM me.
floating Tech 04-02-2008, 11:29 AM I have also been accepted to Shenandoah University, and will be subscribed to this thread. I don't know what my housing situation will be, but I will actively begin looking for housing after I graduate this semester.
I guess I will put it out right now in case anyone wants to contact me. I will be looking to get a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom (condo/apartment) with a male roommate. Must be clean and organized, and no smoking and preferably no alcohol. Specific, but my ideal candidate. Let me know if you fit the criteria and want to exchange further information.
Congrats to all, and I will see all of you August 18 (or is it 15?). Also, in case anyone is wondering about the laptops they will be IBM thinkpad (unless something has changed within the past year).
jasonargos 04-06-2008, 12:08 PM Bump for adding the housing information I forgot to do earlier.
Also, has everyone joined the facebook group for our class?
MIpharmstudent 04-06-2008, 04:48 PM just wanted to let everyone know that I will be attending also. I am 26 and obviuosly from michigan. I will be looking for a place to stay in late july, hopefully, for my wife and I. If anyone knows of any decent and cheap palces let me know. see you soon.

Pharm4 04-15-2008, 08:57 AM I recently was accepted as well. I am from Michigan, and looking for a roommate who is relatively clean and a non-smoker. Preferably looking for a girl roommate, but I would consider living with a guy as well. Let me know if you are interested.
spackle 04-17-2008, 11:31 PM I am also looking for a female roommate for this coming school year. A non-smoker who likes to study for the most part. Hahaha. :D Please contact me if interested.
jasonargos 04-18-2008, 09:47 PM I just got my financial aid paperwork today, as they mailed it to my previous address and well, my old roommate was an idiot about forwarding things to me. What range for cost of living is everyone coming up with?
ANXIOUSnSCARED 04-19-2008, 12:15 AM It depends on how many ppl i will live with...seems like 2 bedroom, 2 bath places are around $800-1000, but i havent looked alot; did u guys get those mass emails from Elayne today...haha seems like 3-4 ppl in a house would be best...like i said it all depends on who wants to live with me...haha
Anyone interested? PM if you are...thanks
elr0019 04-28-2008, 08:52 PM ok speaking of financial aid, I submitted my FAFSA well over a month ago and got my acknowledgement report from them and everything, but haven't heard anything about rewards from the school yet. Anyone else have this issue or have any feedback? I know this process can take awhile but I'm thinking about giving them a call...
jasonargos 04-28-2008, 09:10 PM Do call. I got a big packet of financial aid info from them over a month ago, so I would imagine that everyone else should have gotten it too. Returned it last week, waiting on more paperwork back from them for the Grad Plus loans, I think...

I called them last week, and they said they have my FAFSA and that they haven't sent my packet yet....I called today, and left a msg, and no one called me back...
I guess I have to call again tomorrow...Does everyone get the same amount for loans?
elr0019 04-30-2008, 09:34 PM I called them last week, and they said they have my FAFSA and that they haven't sent my packet yet....I called today, and left a msg, and no one called me back...

Ok, well I called today and they also had all my info and the lady told me that they'll be sending out a whole other group of packets within the next 2 weeks so it could come pretty soon. As long as they have your stuff with no problems I wouldn't worry. It's just a waiting game now... As far as the amount you get, I think it varies from person to person depending on your financial situation/income etc. I'm pretty sure that most of us will have at least our tuition covered.
jasonargos 05-02-2008, 10:32 AM Regarding the loan amount: Depending on your FASFA, most students should get the full amount of stafford loans, subsidized and unsubsidized. That came to a total of 33k a year, I believe, but I don't have the papers in front of me. Tuition came to something like 26 or 27k a year.
What's recommended is to take out a Grad PLUS loan for the rest of the money you will need to cover your cost of living. Shenandoah apparently does not estimate your cost of living, they just ask you to submit a number on the Grad PLUS form and they approve it, I guess. I was told by the financial aid office to do a budget and decide my own cost of living. So to answer your question about how much we're awarded in loans: The full amount for stafford, which barely covers tuition, and then you can take out pretty much whatever you want in Grad PLUS loans. There's a limit, but it's something so high I didn't bother remembering it.
While on the topic, I'm curious to see if our award amounts will change in the next month or so. Supposedly they're expecting a new bill to be signed in the next couple of weeks that would raise how much we get in stafford loans.
at2395 05-02-2008, 07:10 PM What's up guys, just got off the alternate list and I'm ready to go.
Some basic info on me:
21 years old, Wayne State University, Detroit, English major
I have no idea what's going on with living arrangements and things of that nature. I wouldn't mind a roommate so if you're looking for one then send me a message with the information on the place.

Another nice apartment complex you might want to look into is Summerfield Apartments. http://www.melval.com/summerfield.htm
Also, www.winchesterstar.com has a classified section which has independent apartments and townhouses for rent.
jasonargos 05-03-2008, 10:01 PM Funny how many people from florida end up at Shenandoah. Care to share any opinions on the housing up there? Where do people love and hate this year? I can't wait to head up there, probably first weekend in june to have a look around and decide where to live.

Glycerin 05-14-2008, 09:14 AM Hey guys...quick question, what is the dress code during school? Professional, casual? I hope its not professional...lol
The dress code on most days during school is just every day casual wear, meaning don't come looking like you're still clubbing from the night before or like you just rolled out of bed. There will be days that you'll have to dress professionally, but every school has that.
You're at a point in your education where dressing professionally shouldn't be an issue.
RxStudent 05-14-2008, 08:47 PM Hey guys, can you please help me decide between two of my last choices... I can't decide.. so they are both in Virginia. UACP is an accelerated 3 yr program (Candidate status, aka, same as full status)
Shenandoah is really well known, and it ends up closer to my home...(that is not a real deciding factor of course)... but it's a regular 4 yr with full status. Both schools seem really good.. anyone have any suggestions or any advice on which one to go for?!? Does one school focus more on a particular side of pharm or have better residency programs or help regarding that stuff after graduation ...also, which school in general is considered to have a better overall pharmacy education and experience and worth the money and loans... haha tuition is approximately the same... UACP slightly higher tuition rate... also, NAPLEX rates for the two schools ??
Thank you soo much guys...all ur input and help will truly be appreciated. Please help me decide... :/

I'm currently on the UACP alternate list. I think 3 year programs will be hard, but you get out a year earlier. Plus it's block scheduling, so one class at a time may be easier than 6-7 classes for 4 months. Your question about the NAPLEX rates will be easy to answer. Shenandoah beats UACP only because nobody yet has taken the NAPLEX for UACP lol. (their first class just graduated May 17th)

mmafan 05-28-2008, 10:44 PM Hi everyone,
I have some questions for students who have lived at Stuart Hill apartments.
1) Did you sign a 1-year lease or something different?
2) How would you describe your neighbors?
3) What do you like about Stuart Hill?
4) What can be improved at Stuart Hill?
5) Would you recommend Stuart Hill to new students?
Thank you kindly for any feedback.

I can't answer most of these since I don't live in Stuart Hill, but many, many students live there and the complex next to SH, which is Pemberton, so you'd always have people you know near you.
Both complexes are nice and relatively new and in a nice part of town.

I'm gonna be living there next year! I just know its a one-year lease and its one of the nicer apartments in the area. There is a washer & dyer inside which is very nice, especially during the winter time. Pemberton (apartment complex next to it ) has a community washer & dryer out of the apartment which sucks, but I think the rent is slightly cheaper.

Hi Everyone,
I visited Winchester this past weekend to look for housing. I first went to a few local apartment complexes including Peppertree, Pemberton, and Stuart Hill. Stuart Hill was definetly the nicest one out of all of the above (a little pricey but worth it in comparison). I also met with two different realtors while in the area. All of the apartments and houses I saw located downtown are older(over a 100 years). The Faculty at the pharmacy school suggested checking out nearby Stephen's City for housing. I found a couple new townhouses(2 bedroom, 1 & 1/2 bath) that were very nice and only 10 minutes away from the school. These townhouses run between $850 and $1000(with den) for rent. I think that sharing a townhome with another person would be the best bet; It seemed to be a better value than renting an apartment. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in being roomates or have any questions on what I saw in Winchester and I will try to help.

mmafan 06-16-2008, 03:40 PM I cannot recommend a moving company because I have no experience with any of them. However, movingscam.com has positive reviews (http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1470&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=450) for Coast to Coast Auto Transport and Golden Key Express. Both companies provide free quotes on their websites.

I am most likely going to be going with Dependable auto movers. It is a decent price compared to alot of others that i have looked at, and the reviews are almost all 5 stars. I think u can pack up to 100 lbs but its at ur own risk....so the only things i would be putting there are my pillows and blankets, stuff thats really light but bulky, and maybe some other really light cheap stuff that no one would want to steal...haha

Any suggestions are appreciated. :)

I use Sprint and did not have any problems while I was in Winchester for the interview. However, I would not say Sprint is the best. It is notorious for bad customer service.

US Cellular?? I've never heard of that. Is it a local company?

Cingular works well.
(Verizon has no reception in the lower level of the pharmacy building)
mmafan 06-30-2008, 05:53 PM Hi !
How are you guys getting from the airport to your new home?
Taxis charge ~$100 to go to Winchester. What are some cheaper alternatives?

Are you over 25? A one-way car rental might be cheaper.
rosestar 07-17-2008, 02:02 PM Hi Classmates-
I know it is kind of early to start thinking about what you'll be doing on Saturday, October 18, but I am an active member of the American Diabetes Association and am working on the Planning Committee for Prince William's Step Out to Fight Diabetes walk this year.
So I'd thought I'd reach out to my fellow classmates and see if you'd be interested in forming a team. Apparently a couple of years ago, our pharmacy school sent a couple of big teams. Anyway, if you're interested, let me know. If you want more information go to www.diabetes.org/stepout (http://www.diabetes.org/stepout)
Also, if you don't want to walk, you can also volunteer on the day of the walk :)
jasonargos 07-27-2008, 08:43 AM So, when is everyone moving?
I just made the Ft. Lauderdale to Winchester trip this week (by means of the auto train) and already love the area.
Anyone else already here?
mmafan 07-27-2008, 02:14 PM I'll join you in Winchester on Aug 6th. May the next 4 years be pleasant and memorable!
ANXIOUSnSCARED 07-27-2008, 11:50 PM I'll be there around the 12th...see ya guys soon!
anyone know about DMV/insurance stuff for VA? Do we have to get a virginia license plate/ license?
jasonargos 07-28-2008, 03:05 AM Well, legally speaking, we're supposed to switch over our licenses, get insurance for this state, and get our cars inspected and then registered here. I've yet to talk to any 2nd year+ Pharmacy students to see if any of them did NOT do that, and why/how. I don't imagine that everyone with an out of state plate gets pulled over much, but I suppose you could be ticketed for not having a valid registration/insurance/etc ifyou've been here for more than 30?45? days. Virginia law makes no exception about residency for students, so the whole "I'm just going to school here" argument that some other states let slide wouldn't hold up. Besides it's beautiful here and who wouldn't want to make this their new home? You'll be here at least four years now.
Tiger12k5 07-29-2008, 03:44 PM I was wondering what to do myself about the license plates and all that, so I took a look at the VA DMV website to see what they had to say:
Out-of-State Students
If you are enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited school in Virginia and not employed, you may drive in Virginia with a valid out-of-state (or another country) driver's license and valid out-of-state license plates on your vehicle. If you are a full-time student and employed, you are considered a resident of Virginia for the purposes of motor vehicle laws only. This does not necessarily qualify you for in-state tuition rates. Therefore, you must apply for a Virginia driver's license and register your vehicle in Virginia. You must register the vehicle in Virginia even if it is owned by someone else.
https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/citizen/drivers/eligibility.asp
I just had my truck registration changed to Texas a year ago and it cost me a few hundred dollars between the title, plates, inspection, license, blah blah blah...so i don't think i'm going to change it for now. Hope this helps!
jasonargos 07-29-2008, 04:02 PM Excellent find Tiger. I was given some references by family that lives in Virginia about this and actually read a page that pointed out students as still needing to register their cars here and emissions and whatnot. I can't find it now, but your dmv link sure was nice to read. Sorry about the misinformation, I should have looked for my source before passing that around.
mmafan 07-29-2008, 04:54 PM Thanks for sharing the info, Tiger!
ANXIOUSnSCARED 07-30-2008, 01:27 PM Hey did everyone get the email from Elayne?
I was wondering if anyone knows what the meyers briggs testing is?
Anywho...man, I can't believe our summer is almost gone...2-3 weeks before school starts, can't believe we are starting pharm school...haha
mmafan 07-30-2008, 02:10 PM The Meyers-Briggs Test is a critical exam that requires written responses to materials we have covered in undergrad, including calculus, physics, microbiology, general and organic chemistry. A 70% is usually necessary to pass this exam.
 I believe it's just a personality test. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myers-Briggs_Type_Indicator
rosestar 07-31-2008, 06:37 PM I head to Winchester tomorrow afternoon to sign my lease. This summer has definitely flown by.
Since I live only an hour and some change away, I won't be officially moving in until orientation gets closer though. See everyone soon!:D
ndearwater 08-05-2008, 11:43 AM Why do people think there isn't Mexican food in Winchester? :D We have like 42 Mexican restaurants here! The Rancho is really good and has awesome margaritas and they're like $2. And Chipotle is sooooooooooo yummerz! :hardy:Like hello!
Congrats on getting in :) See you in a few weeks... :D
Glycerin 08-05-2008, 12:55 PM The Rancho is really good and has awesome margaritas and they're like $2. And Chipotle is sooooooooooo yummerz! :hardy:Like hello!
Blasphemy. :) The Rancho is crap imo, and I can't speak for their margaritas, because the 2 times in the last 3 years I've been there, their liquor license had been suspended.
And Chipotle is okay, but to me it's just a more expensive version of Toxic Hell, er...I mean, Taco Bell.
I say for good Mexican food, go to Perlitas on Weems.:thumbup::thumbup:
mmafan 08-08-2008, 12:28 PM Is there anyone near Stuart Hill who want to shoot marbles and play crickets??
mmafan 08-08-2008, 07:13 PM Hi!
Do you guys have any advice on where to buy a reliable rice cooker? I've checked Walmart and Costco near Jubal Early and Pleasant Valley (lovely name), but they seemed to carry only 1 brand. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

mmafan 09-02-2008, 09:00 PM I recommend Tammy at Utopia in Sunnyside Plaza. :)
much appreciation. i will check it out as soon as my hair grows back. now i look like Dr. Richard Jr.
Glycerin 09-14-2008, 08:55 AM Unrelated to pharmacy...
I recommend you all apply for the Global Citizenship Project that you've been getting e-mails about lately from main campus. There are usually ~6 or so people from the pharmacy school that get selected, and it's a great way to go out of the country for ~10 days with very little personal expenses. I went last year and am so glad I did.
If you have any questions about GCP, just PM me. :)
Congratulations to all who have been accepted. I applied back in July and I have not heard anything yet. Is it better to contact the school frequently or just wait. I saw where SU has begun some interviews.
Any help is appreciated..
I got called for an interview... Thanks....
Jammerdez1 11-07-2008, 11:37 AM Some questions for current students as I try to figure out my future as a pharmacy student:
1) Ashburn vs. Winchester.
Obviously most P1's are attending in Winchester. The person who led us around and gave us a tour of the Ashburn facility seemed to rag on the Winchester campus a lot. Do any of you have any insight on some more Pros/Cons on the two facilities besides the location (bigger city vs. middle of nowhere)?
2) Extracurriculars
Are there/is there time for extracurriculars outside of school? Ie- if i wanted to get an organized afternoon for sports once or twice a week, would that be feasible?
3) Living arrangements
I'm married and will be looking to get into either a house (preferred) or townhome once I get out there. However, I'd like to keep our location pretty close to where most pharm students are living so that spontaneous study sessions and get togethers don't become a chore for me. Do most students live in the same couple of apartment complexes? Assuming so, are there houses close by too or is it all just apartments around there and I'd have to go further away to get into something like that?
4) Video telecommunications
So I saw this in action and thought it was pretty cool, but could definitely see it as a PITA at times as well. What are your guys' thoughts on it? Help/hinderence/indifferent?
Thanks ahead of time for your help and insights.

The bad thing about ashburn is that you are far away from the rest of your classmates. It will definitely be harder once you switch from ashburn to winchester after your first year since everyone already makes their friends/cliques.
As for extracurriculars, there is definitely time. A bunch of us hang out every week, we play basketball and soccer and some of us play tennis. Also, we just made a P1 intramural soccer team and we have a full roster. So there is definitely time to play sports and do other things. Honestly, I play a crap load of video games everyday too...lol
For housing: Most students live in Stuart-Hill and Pemberton, but I live in a townhouse with 3 other P1s. Winchester is fairly small, and I can get to anyone within 5-10mins.
The video conferencing is cool, but i find it harder to concentrate because the professor is not actually there. You get powerpoint presentations before the lectures are given so it is easier to go along in the lecture.
Any questions just PM me, and congrats on getting in!
