some ppl say on campus housing isnt very good, so i'm looking for off campus housing...

It would prolly be best to get a house for 2-3 ppl...

I'm looking for one or 2 roommates to live with so if anyones looking we can exchange info and stuff

That seems like a good idea. How much does the rent go in HI? Seems that it may be expensive and far. Then you'd have to get a car or something. I'm from L.A and I'm planning on selling my car. So while I go to school out there, I was hoping to walk/bike/bus.

Waikaiea Lagoon or however you spell it is supposedly not bad according to some ppl...
If more ppl were interested in housing on this thread and more ppl talked on this thread then we can actually help each other and possibly find roommates too!!!!!:D

Will you be really going to UHH? Why pick the school that have not been fully accredited? I am also wait listed there at UHH.... I will only go there if I don't get accepted any where else... do you by any chance know how many seats are filled at UHH? hope it works out well for you.

hello everyone,

i am also going to uh hilo this fall and am a hawaii resident from oahu. just wanted to share something that my interview person told me - she said it was a GOOD idea to have your own car in hilo because some of the sites that you have to go to (for work) are far from campus and the bus system is very unreliable there. i am also looking into off-campus housing...anyone know of any apartment complexes close to campus?

I'm staying at University Palms for Fall 08 semester, then not sure after that. I was hoping to find roommates to share a house with after the 1st semester, ya know after meeting people and getting familiar with the area...it's hard looking for housing when you all the way in Michigan...lol :) If anyone needs a roommate for 2nd semester on I'm definitely interested.

Do you already have roomates for the U Palms? Or do you have a one bedroom. Would be interested for housing, I'm sure it will be cheaper than the U Palms. I'm scared I won't find a place..

It is a 2 bedroom appt. I'm assuming they pair you up w/ someone, I have no clue who I'm sharing it with but I already put a deposit down b/c I'm moving there in june to finish my pre-requisites at UH during the summer term. I wish I would have waited to put the deposit down but I was worried too about finding a place...also it is close to the university (looks that way on the map anyway) b/c I'm not going to have a car. But I am hoping to find something else after 1st semester.

i realize searching for housing in hilo can be a daunting task and although i'm not a student at uhh anymore, i was born here and did my undergrad at uhh. since i haven't lived on campus, i can't offer first-hand info on that. but, i have heard a lot of stories regarding several of the options out there. my advice, take it as you wish, would be to buddy up and get a rental house. i'm including a link to a property management company that handles a lot of rentals in hilo. hope it helps...

http://www.ginozarealty.com/

oh, and i agree with the recommendation of getting a car. our weather is very unreliable!

Hey Hilo people....

I'm not a part of your class, but I'll drop a few tips/words of wisdom from my end. I was interviewed and accepted, and I declined the offer, but not before visiting the school and area.

1) I heard to avoid University Palms, this from my taxi driver for the weekend. Reasons being: noise problems and lots of rowdy undergrads.

2) On campus housing is not very nice, your best bet is off campus (I left my list of recommended places on another computer).

3) Shipping your car will cost about $1000 if you ship it from Long Beach/San Diego to Hilo. Add in more if you need to get your car to this west coast port. Some residents recommend getting an "island beater" since whatever car you will be shipping will be exposed to the constant humidity/rain. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to arrive.

4) http://www.city-data.com/forum/hawaii/ is a good source for information, just dig around for a few hours.

5) 7-11 by campus has good breakfasts. There aren't many food options around campus for some reason that I forgot...except maybe a Subway and some chinese food place.

6) If you want a cool taxi driver who is full of knowledge (and won't rip you off)...call Kirby at (808) 557-0879. Depending on his load that day, he can probably get to you within 15-20 minutes, so call once you land. He has his own one-man taxi company ("Hot Lava Taxi") with his minivan and is an all around nice guy.

Tell him his "two favorite mainlanders from San Diego who walked halfway across town because they got lost" sent you, see if he remembers us. Tip him well.

7) Order the "Loco Moco" from L&L. Trust me.

8) I personally think a car is necessary as Hilo isn't really a "walkable" town (like San Francisco or other dense urban area), someone else told me they bought a motorbike to scoot around town (sounds like fun). Others said, if you're social, you can probably bum a ride off of someone.

9) For those that still have a choice in schools...VISIT HILO FIRST. General comments for everyone: The city and campus are small/quaint and EVERYONE I met was very friendly. At the same time, the area didn't suit what I was looking for. I'm sure many of you will love it...and at the same time, I'm sure many of you will be going "wtf what did i do?!?!" when you land the first time.

If you're expecting another Honolulu (which, I'm sure most of you have been to for vacation), DON'T. You will just be disappointed. This is not to disparage Hilo in any way, this is just the way things are. Take Hilo for what it is and make the most of it, and don't compare it to any other place on the island. Some of you will enjoy those differences, some of you won't.

Anyway...just thought I'd inject some knowledge in here. Congrats to you all and I wish your class well!

I'll probably be looking for housing over there sometime soon too. Off-campus housing from what I hear is the best bet and I heard the same things about University Palms (loud & rowdy). I just want a decent, relatively quiet, and affordable place to stay at! :p And a kitchen too-- even though I can't really cook but I want to attempt. Haha.

Looks like a lot of you are coming from the west coast. I'll be island hopping from Oahu to Big Island.

As for the question about what is needed to work as a Pharmacy Technician.. Some hospitals require 1-2 years of experience and certification is a plus (but not necessary in order to be hired). Other places, nothing really.. just the will and desire to be in the pharmacy field!

well said confettiflyer....i think your post was both honest and accurate. most people who relocate to hilo have a high and unrealistic expectation of hilo. hilo is SO different than honolulu but the people who connect with it... stay...like you said, "take hilo for what it is...make the most of it..." there are some really special places on this island...take a break from your studies and go explore...

nah the best loco mocos i think is either
freddy's drive in (best deal, 2.86 for one single, fills u up)
kens house of pancakes (for the sumo loco)
or cafe 100 (for the variety of types of locos)

i kind of favor L&L for the orange chicken and the katsu and curry katsu

Good observations.

Yes, you and your books will drench in the rain without a car. The map of Hilo may look small but I wouldn't try walking/riding a bike to school everyday. Did that for the first week of school and found the hills to be more than I could manage. Also because students have labs and IPPE on different days, you might not want to risk not having your own ride. What some people did was buy used cars here or on Oahu (honolulu) and ship it over.

There are lots of apartments here...ofcourse some of it seems a bit shady. There are also lots of houses for rent here as well and that may end up costing a lot less than apartments. Look in the classified section of local newspapers or on craigslist.

Just enjoy the rest of your vacation and stop fretting out so much.

i think cockroaches and mold are pretty much all over hawaii

where i live im always finding cockroaches in my room, best way to deal w/ it is to buy raid or use dish soap and puts lots of cockroach traps all around

for mold i think its best to get a dehumidifier, whenever i leave anything in my room for too long it always gets moldy

its just something u gotta learn to deal with

and not to scare anyone or anything but there are some friggen big centipedes

University Palms is not glamorous like you see on their website. Very filthy, bad management, and has undergraduates making noise. I almost lived their last semester and I'm so glad I didn't. Many of my pharmacy classmates live in the Lagoon, but it's really hot there because it's downhill from campus. As you go up the hills in Hilo, the temperature changes drastically. Cockroaches are everywhere though. You just have to vacuum them up or use bug spray.

Welcome UH CoP class of 2012!

University Palms is, indeed, noisy. I pass it daily. A Wednesday night there can sometimes turn into a rowdy Friday night. But besides the noise and the constant commotion it's pretty safe I would say; it's a gated "community". Quite a bit of pharmacy students lived there during the Fall '07 semester, however, everyone of them has moved out for the Spring '08 semester . I haven't lived there but have visited several of their "units". The units I've been in had 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 small common areas with a couch and a TV, and a tiny kitchen. Interior design is symmetric. Some are 2 bedroom units I think.

UP does have its perks, though:
- It's literally right across the campus. A 5 min walk will take you right into the lecture room.
- This might partially solve the transportation problem for some.
- Once again, due to the short distance from campus you can always study in the UH library if it's too noisy. The library is pretty nice, comfy, and air-conditioned.
- If you can't find anything and getting desperate for housing UP can be your last resort.

Random info about Hilo:
As far as restaurants/fast food places go, there are many local Asian/Hawaiian joints. Like others have mentioned Cafe 100 (very short walk from WLV apartments), L & L, Ken's are some examples of good local places. For Mainland type fast food places, there's McDs, BK, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Dominos, Jack-in-the-box, Ihop, Subway, Quiznos. There's more, of course. You can always cook yourself too :D

I lived here since last August and I managed without a car (including rotation visits). There's a neat taxi-discount service available here in Hilo, where you can buy taxi coupons from the University for 2 bucks a piece. One coupon per ride, so $4 will get you a round trip from multiple taxi companies. Not bad of a deal at all.

It will be hard finding a completely quiet place around the campus. We have these coqui frogs in Hilo which fill the night with their own unique noises :D

Last item for those interested in a housing solution:
My roommate and I will no longer be staying in our current house during our 2nd year. It's a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house. $1200 per month with all utilities included. If you find a roommate to split rent it's a pretty good deal. If anyone is interested PM me and I will give you our realtor info. Oh, and it's only about a 10 min walk to the campus.

Hope this helps!

LOL, more than once I have been on the phone with someone and have them ask if there is a bird in my ear just to have it be the coqui's.

On the restaurants, I like Don's..but it's a tad out of the way.

Cafe 100 is good too, the Loco Moco is good!

A word to people thinking of going to Hilo for school. It rains A LOT, but if you drive no more than 50 miles around the island it becomes a desert, so if you get bored you can make the (long?) drive from Hilo to the beaches on the other side of the island (It's about a 3 hr drive). My favorite and IMO, best, beach is Hapuna, it's the biggest beach on the island, it has good waves, and nice white sand.

About the Choqui frogs, bring ear plugs! They're the size of your thumbnail but they're loud enough to give you a headache from a quartermile away!

On this page on the right hand side there is a small clip of a Coqui in action: A cautionary tale to your ears. http://www.hawaiiancoqui.org/

im pretty sure you can make it to hapuna in 2 hours (from hilo at least)

i dont know y people like hapuna so much. its always windy and crowded and the current sucks you out. and the stupid jelly fish sometimes

i think all the beaches by keaukaha is way better. richardsons is the best for like new people and touristy people. theres turtles, seals, fishys, eels, and last time i went there a bunch of dolphins swam by. i've lived here my whole life and i've never seen wild dolphins

I would think you would definitely need a computer of some sort rather it be a labtop or desktop. You will have to type up lab reports or other papers I'm sure. There will also most definitely be computers to use at libraries and such, but nothing really beats the convenience of having your own. I personally could not get by without mine.

i think u quoted the wrong thing

but its a fujifilm finepix A360, i just checked and they are pretty cheap on ebay, but its only 4 megapixels, not like i really need more anywayz

but the way i usually take pictures like this is use the macro mode and then take maybe 5 shots hoping one will come out not blurry. i think pretty much any camera can take decent shots, just play around w/ the settings and take a bunch of pictures so you will have at least one good clear shot

Hello! I have a brand-new pharmacy consultation coat (short pharmacy student lab coat) I'm not using. It is sized XS in women. The lab coat is needed for pharmaceutics lab and rotations (both are once a week in the morning). The College of Pharmacy won't be handing out coats until the White Coat Ceremony so you need to have one ready for the start of classes. Personally, the consultation coats at the bookstore are not great quality and the sizes are huge. (If you want to buy a regular long lab coat for lab, the bookstore has good quality coats which are cheaper than consultation coats.) Fortunately my mom got me this at a medical outfitters store for professionals. I'm asking $25 so please contact me if you're interested. I will have access to it when I'm back in Hilo for orientation.

I highly recommend you wait out for the new apartments instead of U. Palms. It is a decision for an entire semester you are talking about. Yes, it won't be ready until August 15th and won't have Internet yet, but you can always go to the school library for that. It is just orientation week which isn't a hassle. U. Palms is dirty and can get really noisy with all the undergrads' music. You will encounter smoking in certain areas too. It is quite stuffy there so beware of mosquitoes (if you are sensitive to bug bites).

I just got found out I got accepted to UHH yesterday  (not kidding) so I have about 2 weeks to find a place and get everything squared away. Anybody looking for a room-mate or have tips/suggestions for making living arrangements?
I'd call University Palms right away - their website is universitypalmshawaii.com. Also be sure not to forget to have all of your vaccines, and CPR training done as its necessary for the medical center experience.

Congrats! FYI, mandatory orientation is on August 18, 2008. You should contact Ann for more information. See you this Fall!

I actually just arrived at the Waikea Lagoon Apts and they are really nice... I was a little nervous when I saw the outside but my apartment is super clean and I haven't seen any mold or bugs? As far as that goes... just keep your place clean and buy some raid.. i'm sure the people that get huge cockroaches all the time probably leave food out! If anyone is staying at WLA now let me know.. it's definately kind of boring here!

I also choose to stay at University Palms for this semester because it's the closest place to campus. I just got to Hilo a couple days ago, and found out that the apartment is so horrible, dirty and noisy. It seems like students here party every night. Everything inside the apartment is old, dirty, smelly, some equiptments didn't even work properly. And yes, those small insects, mosquito, and roaches, HATE them!! I already knew that Uni Palms has a bad reputation but I didn't expect it's this bad until I'm actually here to check in. Well, the only good thing is that it's right across campus - convenient for students without a car like me. I'm also from CA, and I know it's very hard moving to a place so far away from home. Don't worry, you'll be able to survive Uni. Palms, just need to do some clean up!

I know but im coming August 17th and need a guaranteed place to stay.
So i settle for U .Palms.

Subject: CoP labcoats

Hello all,

As most of you know, you will begin either your clinical or retail rotations immediately in the Fall. As our Whitecoat Ceremony does not take place at the start of school, you will need to purchase a labcoat from the bookstore to be used for a couple months. If you already have a short white (and clean) labcoat, you are welcome to use that. However, EVERYONE must email me with your labcoat size by this coming Monday, 6/9, so we can get our orders for both the bookstore and the ceremony started. If you have any questions, please feel free to email at any time.

Thanks,
Ann

I brought one just in case.

arent the lab coats only for the lab? they sell em in the bookstore for 25 bucks. they have normal lab coats and pharmacy consultation jackets (whatever that is). lab coats sell out fast, last semester for microbiology i didnt even get one because they never ordered any. and for some retarded reason theres no other place in hilo that you can buy a lab coat

when i volunteered at Hilo Medical Center all i wore was long pants and a T shirt. the only person in the pharmacy that wears a lab coat is Nelson, the head pharmacist or whatever its called.

I hope I will even get my white coat since I wasnt aware we had to order one! I am not CPR certified either. Is anyone else in my situation? Can anyone tell me if there is a class offering CPR close to campus that is not full (according to Ann). It really sucks if I cant do my rotations bc I had such litttttle time to prepare :scared:

pretty boring but i guess we gotta do it, and dont be late cuz the guy locks you out

phone number is 935-8305"

older post by me in case you missed it

also maybe pick up a copy of the sunday tribune herald. theres this guy that does CPR training, Lloyd Narimatsu, its usually somewhere in there. Someone said it was free but idk.

also for places to live. try the newspaper, or craigslist, or go to UHH and check the bulletin boards (i know theres always alot of housing stuff on the one in front of the library, the one going up the side of the library, and one right by the housing place, PB something I think, right next to PB-14 where Ann works)

and im not sure you even need CPR training to do your rotations, because when i went to HMC to check if they had everything and they only went over my immunizations. I was still missing my varicella titer and they said everything was good already. The titer stuff is only for the school. I think the titer is stupid and Kaiser does too since they won't give me a blood test. I'm probably gonna have to get one this week hopefully. Yeah so if you need a ride up to HMC I'm probably gonna go up there sometime this week. Yeah and if you need a ride anywhere i'm totally willing to help as long as its nothing really out of my way. can email me or if you have msn messenger add me: habeansha@gmail.com

good luck getting everything done

It's a 1200 sq. ft. apartment (2 story) with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths for 1000$ a month. So it'd be good for 3 people and a pretty easy rent, seems to be very cheap...

Says to Call 808-934-7014 for information. (Oh and no pets.)

I have a stupid question (or not), but since the CPR certification is required for hospital rotations and since I received a retail rotation (and I'm assuming that rotation sites are set for each semester), it should be okay to get the training done in say, December or something, right?

i would probably think its good to get it done now or asap. i dont even know why you need cpr training. if you are gonna be in the pharmacy there is probably gonna be someone better trained then you. it just seems like they want you to have it just to seem important or something.

i am in a similar situation w/ my blood titers. i didnt get a positive for varicella so i got the 2 shots to be immunized for it. i told kaiser i wanted a blood titer done but they told me i dont need it and i need the doctor to get it for me. so im just not gonna do it. if someone tells me to do it then i'll do it but if not then whatevers. the hospital doesnt even require that you have a positive titer, its just for the pharmacy school

i think everyone should just learn how to deal with it. hawaii is a very diverse place and there are many people that are probably harder to understand then her.

i personally have no problem understanding her, but my moms side of the family is from singapore and everyone there kinda talks w/ that accent.

and there are way worse teachers in hawaii, just so you know. One of them i had was dr li. he was my calc 2 teacher and had a crazy chinese accent, also he talked really soft and there was no microphone in the class like we have. he was a nice guy and everything but no one in the class could hear or understand what he was saying. but everyone just learned to deal with it. also in high school there was an GT ENGLISH teacher that had a heavy chinese accent. I think she now also teaches AP english.

and just curious but by "American born speaker" do you mean haole?

habeansha-you have obviously been around asian accents before, so I can see why you have no problem. I'm from the mainland, have only dealt with white english speaking instructors with an American accent.

When I was accepted here I had no idea there would be an "accent" at the pulpit. Lectures are very cruical, and I would appreciate it if we didn't have to listen to such a difficult accent.

I am not racist, just thinking how much easier it would be for myself to not have to "translate", if you know what I mean. As time goes on, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

The literal translation of "Ha'ole" means "no breath" and now its a derogatory term for a Caucasian. Natives that call you that are insulting you.

I am under the impression that a Haole is simply a native Hawaiian's term for a non-native Hawaiian visiting/living in Hawaii (often white tourists, though). I don't think it is necessarily a negative term- just a word they use. My Grandfather lived here for 4 years back in the 60's and told me with a smile that I would be a "Haole" when I came here :)

SDN is a HUGE place, there are plenty of threads where posters are new and have only one or two posts! Just look around. There is nothing wrong with participating in any controversial issue as long as you stay within the guidelines of the TOS.

To actually ban someone over this is totally ridiculous. Their post is FAR from racist-my guess is a touchy professor that cannot handle "good critisism" hit the "abuse" button and the mod got excited.

I've been told that "haole" originally meant foreigner but it's become a phrase for caucasian. It's not deragatory unless you take it to be so. I'm half haole and it doesn't mean a thing to me. People always used to ask if I was half asian, half haole.. and I am. So what.

Hawaii's population is incredibly diverse.. I love it. It's the only place I've ever lived where everyone can make fun of everyone and have a good laugh over it. Haole isn't a derogatory term, just as "white" isn't a deragatory term.

Anyways.. So jealous of you guys in Hawaii right now. I am totally missing the beaches!

Sorry, what I meant was that in its original form it is derogatory. It was what the natives called Cook when he landed way back when... As I said the literal translation is "No breath" but it meant "soulless". Now it usually isn't, but I've had occasions where that's exactly what it is... They're not fun.

weird im the exact same thing, half chinese and half white.

to me haole is just the mainlander peoplez that come here and complain about fricken everything. Like the kind of people that write editorials to the newspaper and complain about stupid stuff. yeah but apparantly the haoles always know where all the parties are.

Right now my books are closed, will be logging off soon. I'm ALL studied out!
Good luck on the test tomorrow-I am ready finally. I wonder if the great Dr "tanned" one will be checking for crib notes. lol

what did everyone think of the test today? i thought it was okay and straight-forward other than the fact that it was cold as h*ll in there.

Yep-I was freezing my _ _ _ _ _'s off. Hell, we pay a kings ransom for tuition and they hold back on the heat. Unless this cheapo joint makes some changes, my next year will be somewhere else. Dr Chang will be at the lecture helm soon again-she doesn't know the material, not that Tan is much of an improvement. Shoulda taken Jefferson when I had the chance! Hilo is a huge let down-boring as heck on this rock for activity.

But please-do check out HYC-you won't be disappointed. ;)

When you guys mentioned the classroom being cold and freezing, are you referring to the weather or the air conditioning?

I'm assuming it's the weather and if it is, how cold has it been?

Is there a gym nearby housing facility?

thanks:)

It was the air conditioning in that particular classroom that day which was very cold.

The weather here is not cold at all, it varies during the week though. Like one day it will be cloudy and gray (and perhaps raining) and the next it could be bright and sunny. It usually only will get cold at night or in the early morning.

Yes there is a new student life center (gym) on campus as well as both on-campus and off-campus housing facilities. But I'd recommend living off-campus.
