I am talking about doing it like a business -- not getting contracted out to hospitals as in a EM "private practice."

Which specialties are most conductive to private practice and which of these types of private practices are currently the most in demand/successful? Are most practices centered around one type of specialty like neurosurgery or do they usually have several different services? How many physicians are needed to operate a practice? Are there any specialties to avoid if you want to do private practice?

Also, to start an urgent care clinic, how many physicians would you need and what should their specialties be?

Thanks

I thought you were interested in EM, regardless of whether or not it was appropriate for private practice?

If you're talking about non-hospital affiliated private practice, certainly many primary care fields can do this. Often places like urgent care centers hire people that don't have admitting privileges.

IM, FP, Peds, etc. can do this, for example.
