Hello all- First off, I am not a UNECOM student, but am a undergrad (senior) at UNE who has worked closely with UNECOM MSI and II students over the years. Just wanted to let you all know that if you have any general questions about housing, etc., I would be happy to point you in the right direction if you PM me. Congrats to all with acceptances/interviews...UNECOM is an awesome school:)

i was just wondering, does UNECOM send out rejection letters throughout the cycle to applicants who have not interviewed or does it get sent out all at once at the end of the cycle?

i took pietachok's advice and called this morning to see the status of my application. i was complete 10/28 and haven't heard anything since. the very nice lady on the phone told me i should hear something within a few weeks because the admissions committee will be meeting again soon. she was totally close-mouthed (understandably) when i tried to get her to be more specific about my application (i.e. if i was put on hold or something). anyway, do any of you have any idea what this could mean?

btw, congrats on your decision pietachok! i bet you feel a lot more relieved. i'm sure UNECOM will not disappoint you

Anyone else interviewing next Thursday?? I'm getting pretty excited over here, and am loving this "contact with a current student" deal. Every school should be so kind!

I'm wondering if anyone has a sense of how many interview spots remain? I just finalized my secondary today (I know, late!) Not sure how my chances are at this stage.

I'm from New England, 3.36 cum GPA, 3.56 science GPA, 35N MCAT. Pretty standard volunteer, research, shadowing etc.

I was wondering if I could get any input from current UNECOM students. I just received a letter from the school talking about an event named Osteoblast. What is this event/what does it entail? Thanks for the help!

Osteoblast is a chance to meet other accepted students and current first and second years. The clubs and organizations on campus also set-up booths and provide some info about their groups or have activities set up such as casting and use of surgical instruments. Last year there was a chance to win multiple prizes and we received t-shirts and other goodies! I highly recommend going to the event as it was a great opportunity to meet some future classmates in a fun and relaxing environment.

Not to sound co-dependent, but can I bring my boyfriend? :p Meaning, is it something people bring parents/sig others to or would that be awkward?

Thanks!!

I'm going to an interview on Feb 12th and I'm feeling MUCH better about it after reading all your replies on here. Thank you!! :)

I think my biggest worry is that from an academic standpoint I'm pretty weak (let's not go into my sci. GPA...) but it seems that if they invite you for an interview they're looking much more into personality than anything else. Seems they saw past the grades to the fact that I was doing 60-80hrs of extracurrics while being a biochem major doing 19 credits eh? :)

Question: Does anyone know more information about the MMEL program? On certain pages on the website it looks like a concurrent program like the MPH program while in many locations it lists the MPH program as the only concurrent program. Has it even had a full semester yet or is it kicking off for 2009-2010? I really love UNECOM but have always wanted a DO/MBA or something with an administration slant... it seems one of the certificate programs related to the MMEL program might be close...?

The class may be full. UNECOM routinely has enough acceptances to fill the class by this time in the year. People accepted after the class is full are put on the, "accepted-space available list" basically- the wait list. Don't lose hope however- people are accepted off the wait list as offers from other schools come in and people change their minds. Your best bet at getting a firm acceptance is to have a strong application and apply early. Application timing is key!

Just wondering if anyone knows the makeup of each entering class (ie/ online it says that the average entering class is 27 years old.) It also mentions that many of the matriculants have a master's degree. Does this mean that it is uncommon for an applicant to matriculate after 4th year university (who is only 22-23)? I appreciate any input.

The average age varies year to year but I had quite a number of people in their early and mid 20's in my class. They kept the party going!

I just got my acceptance to UNECOM. I also have an acceptance to NOVA. I liked UNECOM a lot when I was up there...the community, people, small, New England feeling, and the scenery...but I've been in Manhattan for years now, and I was originally from California (although I lived in New England long enough to have my cold winters), I'm finding it hard to go with my gut and take UNECOM over NOVA, and I think it's just based on the warmth and sunlight. I'm 28, and I think that's kind of embarrassing as far as ways to pick a med school. NOVA felt like an infomercial, but so many people on SDN seem excited about it.

Is there anybody at UNECOM who can really help me outline the big differences *in the education/school* that helped them choose? Or anybody else making the same decision?

1) NOVA does prosection only...UNECOM does full dissection, correct?
2) UNECOM is system based, and NOVA isn't, but it's interdisciplinary and being changed.
3)UNECOM has really good matches, and they seem to be at better institutions, but maybe the names just sound "better" to me because they are in a region I am more familiar with...
4)the patient population lacks diversity at UNECOM
5)Neither has much research, but I think UNECOM has less...
argh...
any help would be sooo very appreciated, my non-refundable NOVA deposit is due on december 28th.

1. UNECOM Anatomy does full dissection (4 students per cadaver) and also has pro-sections for students to use - amazing anatomy lab- lots of natural light and good air circulation

2. Systems based for the most part during 2nd year.

3. UNECOM has good matches although it's generally harder to match at competative MD residencies such as ortho, optho, derm, ENT, rads, etc. coming from a DO background- one should be aware of this if they plan to pursue MD residencies in those fields. NOVA grads run into the same biases.

4. Diversity in patient population really doesn't matter much during the first 2 years as your interactions with patients will be limited until your clinical years- year 3 and 4. However, Maine does have a large underserved patient population that you will be exposed to during your training. 3rd year training opportunities include places like Newark, NJ and Providence, RI where one can get more than enough experience with diverse patient loads (if you mean racial diversity).

5. There are ample opportunities for both clinical and basic science research at UNECOM. The basic research is limited to a number of fields but anyone who wants the opportunity to participate may- and get published too!

This might be a stupid question, but can you do rotations anywhere? I have family in Hanover, NH that I could stay with so could I do a few rotations at Dartmouth or not?

You can do 4th year rotations pretty much anywhere they will take you...Dartmouth, St.Vincents, etc.

Good luck to everyone applying to UNECOM this year and congratulation to those with acceptances!!

ShyRem

And as for interviewing if the "class is full".... UNE is NOT like places such as VCU, who only have exactly as many acceptances given out as they have seats. UNE typically will have more acceptances than seats as many people have more than one acceptance and choose later (or get another acceptance later and ditch their previous ones). We have a guy in my class who got in literally the first day of classes... threw his stuff in his car and came up for the afternoon without a place to live yet.

I'd say a good 30% of the class gets in off the "waitlist". Don't count UNE out just because you think the class may be full.

I would like to know if any current UNCECOM student or acceptee can tell me about the FinAid process @ UNECOM. i.e. when can I expect to hear about any scholarships or award packages if I choose to matriculate there?

I have paid the initial deposit, so they know I am partly committed to the school. Would letting the school know I am fielding multiple offers be of any use to me in this process? I really enjoyed UNECOM but the price is a factor in where I decide to go.

Thank you for the assistance.

I just got a UNECOM rejection letter today(?). I was fairly surprised by this because by stats are solid (3.6/31, and I lived in NH for 11 years before going to college).

I guess I was expecting at least an interview invite...

ShyRem
01-21-2009, 03:05 AM
They tend to look for more than stats. And whether you have ties to NE doesn't really matter. You have a better statistical chance of getting in as a non-NE person than as a NE person.

What - really? Wasn't this the school that had a whole seperate essay devoted to detailing your ties to New England? On top of that, I'm currently an Ohio resident anyway, so I figure I would have had that "out-of-region" edge too...hmmm.

I guess I'm just a bit perturbed because this is the DO school closest to my parents and I figured I had a decent shot at getting into it. It's also the only DO school I've applied to thus far that has rejected me outright, which surprises me a bit. Perhaps it was because I applied too late, but then again they sure took their time getting me their secondary - I cleared AACOMAS in late August and I didn't even get their secondary till late October. They also gave me the whole "you can't apply until you've finished biochem" line...and I was taking biochem last semester, so maybe that played into it. Bah.

At least I have other acceptances, but it sure would have been nice to be closer to my family.

So sorry to hear about your bad news doz. You're still way better off than me (sans acceptances anywhere), so be glad you're definitely on your way to becoming a doctor.

Anyone else get letters today?

ShyRem
01-21-2009, 03:51 PM
Sorry, doz. Sometimes med school admissions seem like it's just a monkey standing at the top of a staircase throwing files towards a bulls-eye target... whatever makes it in the middle gets accepted. At least that's what I thought when I was applying everywhere.

Give 'em a call and ask why you got rejected. You have nothing to lose.

marvolush
01-21-2009, 04:36 PM
sorry to hear about that, doz. but, it's true, at least you have an acceptance so it lightens the load. you're going to be a doctor no matter what! (more than i can say for myself right now) do you mind if i ask when your file was complete there?

i called beginning of this month and asked them about my file (i was complete 10/28) and they said i should hear something in a few weeks since the adcom will be meeting. i haven't heard anything yet...but i live in Texas so maybe that fateful letter is still on its way :scared:

Hey Everyone,

I'm a current fourth year at UNECOM. I'm selling my OMT table and I hope one of you can make great use of it. It is a StrongLite OMT version. This is not a massage table but a table specifically designed for OMT(thinner, firm foam for high velocity, low amplitude techniques). It is in perfect condition. It includes a carrying case and folds for easy transport. It will make your life so much easier when studying for OMT tests. I initially paid over $500.00 for it, but I am selling it for $275.00. Please email me at akarpman@mail.une.edu if you would like to see pictures or have any questions.

Feel free to email me any other UNECOM questions as well.

Thanks!

Clinical rotations are great! So much better than sitting in a classroom everyday. Setting up 4th year stuff is easy as long as you do it early. I've been all over the place, in some huge hospitals and I always felt prepared and up to par with all the other medical students, including some from some big name allopathic schools.

I am doing IM next year. I have prematched(awesome thing to do if you can) at a great program. PM me if you want the details.

Good luck next year!

They do say 2-4, you didn't make it up, but mine took more like 6 weeks to get here. Maybe they have the system going more smoothly now and you'll get your letter tomorrow, BUT if a few more weeks go by with no letter that is not evidence that they don't like you. :)

Hello, all:

Thanks, all, for the time you spend posting here! This is my first post, and I look forward to the conversation!

I'm a recent graduate with an undergrad degree in journalism. Various events have led to a change of focus, and my return to school part-time taking the necessary pre-med courses.

Currently I live near Portland, Maine, and hope to enroll at UNECOM in the next year or two.

As such, since I'm nearby, I'd love to meet up with a current UNECOM student for coffee. My treat, of course! I'm just looking to talk with someone about the process, and about their experiences.

If you happen to be a current student, PM me!

Thank you!

Agreed. You can easily find research if your motivated and interested. I did research into balance training devices during my third year of medical school. The person I worked with told me she was always looking for people to do research with her. In fact, she told me when I was done with residency that I should look her up, as we may be able to collaborate on some additional stuff.

Wook, how did you go about finding a research project?

I spoke to the person in charge of the Dean's Fellowship Scholarship (they provide funds for research). She gave me a list of name of people involved in research on site, and I spoke with several of them to find out what they currenlty had going and if they wanted any assistance. I chose to work with Dr. Quick, as she was working on research that was interesting to me (and that I had some experience with).

I can't recall the person's name right now with whom I spoke, but you could probably speak to the RSAS (I think that's their name now) or the academic dean to find out who the point of contact is for the Dean's Fellowship Scholarship (or some name like that)...that person should be able to hook you up with some of the research there.

If you are not successful, please let me know. I'll contact some of the folks that I know over there and get you a name.

Hello,

Good luck to all those waiting to hear! :luck:

Tuckermans

Congrats on the interview invite! I don't think UNECOM has a wait list specifically. Rather, they have a catagory called "Accepted pending space" or something like that. What that translates too is that you are accepted to the class if there is space for you (ie someone who was accepted before you decides not to go there). If no spot opens up, you are gaurenteed a spot in the next years class. At least that is the impression I got. Good luck and congrats again!:)

To those of you who are asking about interviewing in March and if it's "accepted pending space" etc.

I wouldn't cancel your spot, even though one person said the class is traditionally "full" at this point in the year. I am holding one of those UNECOM seats, but might give it up shortly, and have met several people who might do the same. I bet the class fills up but then sees a lot of movement. When I interviewed at NYCOM, I met others with a deposit at UNECOM to whom NYCOM just took much longer to respond.

Personally, I've received 5 interview invitations in the last 2 weeks, so, if I'm any indicator...you should keep your hopes up that spaces will open up in the "full" class due to such offers.

...Now i have to figure out if I want to pay my deposit at NYCOM or not, ARGH.

I was holding a UNECOM seat and I just withdrew, so for those of you worrying about there not being a space, you should still interview! As people are accepted elsewhere, some will relinquish their seats, so the "full" class is actually a pretty dynamic thing, right up until classes start. Then there will be additional movement after May 15th when the wait-lists begin moving.

At the beginning of the process it took them a while (6-7 weeks) to get back to all of us, but I think the process is moving smoother now. They told us within 4 weeks (so usually that means exactly 4 weeks). They send acceptances in these tiny envelopes that look exactly like the rejection letters! I called them and bothered the admissions office until they told me I got in. While they probably would prefer anyone to wait, I would suggest you call them if it is really killing you. Good luck!:)

Just wondering if there is a break between the end of second year and the beginning of third year? I think we are supposed to take the boards in June, but do rotations start right after or do we have some time?

ShyRem
03-01-2009, 06:14 PM
Last year classes ended the end of May. You MUST take boards no later than June 30 (and last year when we signed up the last date offered was June 20 - they ended up adding dates through the end of June later, but changing dates is a game of Russian roulette as you have to cancel your original date first and then you can see if the date you want is available). Rotations start Aug 1 or so.

Basically you get about a month to either relax or stress about board scores.

They have a lot of waitlist movement typically. Don't go off the deep end just 'cuz you think there's only 30 spots left.

ambermay
03-11-2009, 08:02 PM
Do you know how many people got on the wait list in the past, approximately? I know some of the DO's have tons of movement past 5/15 like Touro NV, so just trying to get an idea.

Also on the web page it said that a couple of years ago they had 2700 completed secondaries, and this year when I asked they stated that they had a little over 1200. So hopefully that's a good sign for those of us still waiting to be reviewed.

Tuckermans
03-12-2009, 12:28 PM
Im sure there is wait list movement every year. As for the completed secondaries for this year, I think I remember them saying that last year they issued 2,700 secondary applications and received around 1,200 completed secondary applications (I think that was on an admissions during the interview presentation). If that is the case, it sounds like they are pretty much on track with last year in terms of application numbers.

Have you interviewed yet? If not, then I'd probably call them and see the status of your app.

Does anyone know how long after an interview does it take to hear from the school and how they notify the applicant?

I called last week and they still have not reviewed my app which was complete on Jan 5th. They said it should be done near the end of March so I'm getting optimistic and hoping they get it done sooner ;) I have not interviewed and hope to get the opportunity during April.

Did you interview and when?

They say that it should take around 4 weeks to hear back from them. The decision comes by snail mail and is just one sheet of paper (no big packet or anything). If 4 weeks passes and there is no news then give them a call. I was told about my acceptance over the phone. Good luck:D

random question: does anyone happen to have a class/curriculum schedule for years 1 and 2 at UNECOM? i cant seem to find anything like this on the website - only the classes you take each year, course descriptions and how many credits they're worth.

Tuckermans

Congratulations to everybody who has already been accepted and good luck to all of you who are in the application process. I was in your shoes last year and I feel your pain. UNECOM is a great school and I don’t say that just because I decided to go there. The faculty and staff are super nice and supportive. I would choose UNECOM any day over any other school but it fits me and it may not fit you.

Typical schedule for this year’s first year class (class of 2012):

Mondays:
8-12: Anatomy (Mandatory attendance for lab)
1-3: Physiology
3-5: Biochemistry

Tuesdays:
9-12: OMM*
1-3: Histology
3-5: Embryology

Wednesdays:
9-12: EOM* (Essentials of Osteopathic Medicine (intro. To physical examinations & medical humanities))
1-5: Histology Lab (students are split into groups for 1.5 hour long lab period (3-groups total))

Thursdays:
10-12: Biochemistry
1-5: Clinical Site Experience* (i.e. shadowing, frequency: approx. once a month; If you are not scheduled for that week it's “free” time).

Fridays:
8-12: Anatomy (Mandatory attendance for lab)
1-3: Physiology

Please note that this is a TYPICAL week for OUR class and may or may not change for the future incoming classes. Near the exam week everything changes and we have more "free" time to study in the afternoons.

One interesting thing about our schedule is that every 6th or 7th week we have all of our exams in one week (practical exams Tuesday-Thursday and written for all classes on Friday). The upside is that during the first couple of weeks after the exams you have more “free” time and need to study less, the downside is that during the last couple of weeks before the exams you have NO free time and is all studying.

Study time varies on individual basis, I typically study about 2 hours/day on weekdays and 4-5 hours/day on the weekends. Others do more and some do less!

You have 24/7 access to all labs (Histology, Anatomy and OMM) so it’s totally up to you how much, when and where you want to study.

* Indicates Mandatory Attendance, although I personally attend all classes, there are some folks who do not.

This is from earlier in this thread. I think this is about first year only, but I hope this helps!

Not completely sure, but from what I hear the ASA waitlist is high priority. Students who were on the ASA from last year were offered spots in this year's class...so it's pretty hopeful for you..and with May 15 still far off...I would say good chance!

You'll get it. I think the third years are keeping the admin staff busy right now -- we're innundating them with paperwork for away rotations, LORs, MSPEs, problems scheduling our PE exams, etc. We're in high gear right now.

As for the HIPPA and OSHA training, I think we had to do that in June or July before our MSI year. It's all online, and it sucks away a few hours of your life that you'll never get back. But pay attention and read every screen - the questions are detail oriented and you have to pass. You'll get to do an abbreviated course every year from here on out. That reminds me - I have to recert those two courses next month.

I've submitted the paperwork for rotations up to New Year's. Got a couple set in stone, waiting on the rest. I'll set the ones for next year depending on what I get for my aways. Not too much trouble - the worst is figuring out what you want to get, where you want to go, and of the places you really want to get to before/during interview season what they offer for clerkships. And of course you have to schedule your second step boards in there too. Most clerkship applications these days are online.

Hi everyone. I was recently accepted to UNECOM and want to go there so much. The problem I have is that it turns out that I won't be able to attend this year because of a private matter. I know that in the AACOM book, it says that UNECOM does not defer acceptances to the following year. Does anyone know if that policy is set in stone? Have they ever allowed deferments in the past?

ShyRem

Call them, explain the situation, and ask. They have deferred in the past - for things like spouse dying, parents with terminal illness, etc. Getting married isn't a good excuse.

Congratulations to those attending UNE!!

Question from someone about to start the application process. The tuition at UNE is about 41K a year for in-state and out of state, right? What is the cost of attendance? I know the cost of living in New England is expensive so that concerns me. Is it more than 60 a year? I'm trying to keep my list of schools somewhat rational and cost is the deciding factor.

Asystole

Congrats on being accepted! Did you find out via email, regular mail, or calling admissions? I'm also on the ASA list and I'm dying over here!?!

Thanks! :) They sent me an e-mail that offered my acceptance and asked me to call the Admissions office by Wednesday (yeah, thanks for the leeway but I did it in the next 2 minutes--when I could stop reading and re-reading the e-mail while listening to a dial tone). The phone call is just to make sure that you'll still accept the position and then they'll send you an actual letter via certified mail. Within 14 days of receiving the hard copy letter you need to send in your $500 deposit on the seat.

I have also heard from people (DOs) who have spoken to the Admissions Committee that they commonly go 20-30 deep in the ASA list before filling the class. That being said, I don't know how "deep" the list is. I do know I was in the top 10.

JJ-As someone who currently lives in Portland I can say that there is affordable housing to be found in ME/New England, especially if you don't have to live in the city or on the waterfront. Check out craigslist to get an idea.

SarahJ

My financial award total eligibility, which is basically what you're looking for here, is $71,000 for the first year. Its 46 total for tuition fees and insurance, and around 24 for living expenses. I don't think all four years cost the same amount, but thats probably a good general estimate (60-80 per year?)

Hey guys,

Wanted to make sure everyone knows there is another thread on sdn for accepted students- unecom class of 2013. We aren't as exciting over there but some of the questions you're asking have already been asked and answered on that thread so it may be worth checking out.

Congrats to all the recent acceptances!

and J515- is that your dog? Are you taking him/her with you to school? Looks like my dog, who I want to take to school with me but people I talk to are scolding me saying I won't have time...

but Shyrem, aren't you're doing well with children at home?! (and clearly you have time to cook amazing meals as well...) How could a dog be anywhere near as hard as that?

ShyRem
06-04-2009, 06:05 PM
A dog doesn't go to the bathroom in the toilet. And never learns to. They need someone to be home to play with them, take care of them, feed them, bathe them. Unless you want to take them to doggie day care (and I think most of those places require at least intermediate dog training completed).

I did fairly well with two children at home. However, for third year I was away from Portland. So I spent every weekend I had free at home. But not everyone does so well with children at home. Many take more than the normal four years for med school as they find parenting and med school together to be a bit much. (Personally, I did without sleep.)

Haha, all interesting points, although I think I could create a much more persuasive list on why caring for a person is more time consuming. I have a much younger brother and even though I have two parents to help, I still find him to be 100 times more work than my dog. I mean, geeze, his homework help takes forever, I have to cook his meals (I can't just throw kibble in his bowl once a day), I have to clean his dishes, and his laundry- so glad dogs don't wear clothes! Then there is all the time it takes for me to talk to him about his day, drive him to visit friends, deal with conflicts that arise with his school work and offer general education on how to become a well rounded human being. I'm really getting exhausted just thinking about it... :)

The ranking email had said that I was in the first quartile. When I called last week they had told me that I was in the bottom half of the top of the waitlist. So it looks like they were chugging through that list just fine :-)

i think unecom will go very deep into its wait-list. the school is likely to be considered prohibitively expensive for many pre-meds and as a result student who have a chance to save about 20-30k a year will go for cheaper, if not really greener, pastures.

I would definitely encourage people to go for cheaper pastures. Especially given the political agenda of "health care reform" -- aka decrease in reimbursement rates.

UNE is very expensive, and the tuition increases every year whether the university needs it or not.

 I thought UNE was on par with other DO schools. Is it not? The tution is around 40 K a year. The cheapest DO school is LECOM but after that, most are in the upper 30's or higher, right?

the 2008-2009 tuition is $46k, plus an additional 15-20k for fees and living expenses. Current students say the tuition goes up about 6% a year, every year. expect to pay over 50k/yr by 2010. Ridiculous yes but if its really what you want....

UNECOM's students have one of the highest debt loads in the country of ANY school. There are few scholarships or grants available. Not saying anythig good or bad about the school, but you should know the debt you're getting into. The loans are definitely there to be had, but be aware you're going to be in a heap of debt at the end of the journey. Stafford loans don't even come close to covering the COA (they don't even cover the tuition anymore).

With the possibility of health care reform looming around the corner, everyone should be aware of the cost of their health care education.

haha! This comment really quieted the forum. We currently have a sytem where there are built in incentives for all the wrong things. Doctors are compensated for procedures, running expensive tests with expensive technology and completing emergency surgery while preventative measures, such as taking the time to educate the patient about nutrition and excercise before the heart attack, are not well compenated if at all. Changing the way the system rewards/ compensates physicians to one that values prevention is not necessarily going to lead to decreasing salaries, although it may for some of the higher paid specialties- but come on, should those specialists really be making that much anyway? Like most of Obama's reform ideas, the majority of doctors will probably see no change in salary, or increase, while the wealthiest few may see a decrease. Personally, I think its a great idea.

I'm with you, Sarah :). We've been needing an overhaul for a long time, and even if this one's not perfect, at least we're going in the right direction.

Just to throw my hat into the ring here, I both agree and disagree. While health care is in need of some pretty fantastic reform, I am forced to consider aspects of this program that have not yet been discussed on this forum. Primarily, the cost of this new health care reform. The sources that I found put the cost at around 55-65 billion dollars a year. That is a lot of money, and in the end who knows exactly how much it will end up costing (Government programs/ideas are known for many things, but saving money is not one of them). Obama recently gave almost a trillion dollars to "jump start" the economy. Between his plans for health care reform, education overall and an increased presence in Afghanistan and the "elephant in the room" that is social security, I am very skeptical on how he intends to pay for this. We as a nation are also in 11 trillion dollars of debt and that just does not pay itself off.
So, I am once again drawn to how he intends to pay for this plan. The answer is simple. He is going to (and has already started) to tax the pants off the upper middle class and the upper class. So, while your salary might not go down a dramatic amount as a primary care doctor, your tax burden is going to go through the roof. In my opinion now is not the time to be inacting new and far reaching programs, now is the time to save money and pay for the obligations we have inherited from previous poor leadership. I wish the issue were as simple as just reforming health care, but in my mind it is far more complicated.

If we don't do something now about the wasteful spending in the health care system it is literally going to blow up in our faces over the next few decades. Its not a possibility, its like 100% yes, when the baby boomers become geriatric patients if we have not changed something there is not going to be enough money to pay for all of the care that we'll need to offer. There is not enough money anywhere to pay for it- and the cost is going to keep going up every year. Health care reform is the only option, its unfortunate but thats where we are right now. The only argument thats really worth having is what kind. :)

I absolutely agree that health care needs some serious work. As it stands now we have a system that is bankrupting people while managing to leave some of its most in need populations without the basic essentials. I could not agree more.

However, my problem arises from the current administrations demonstrated philosophy towards problem solving. The Government seems very much willing to try to fix everything by spending large amounts of money on it (the economy, Detroit automakers, social security, the war in afganistan, education and now health care). I feel that the more prudent solution when the nation is in 11 trillion dollars of debt would be to identify the things we must spend money on and things we can save money on. Your point that health care should be one in the spend category is well taken, however there must also be things in the save column as well. Thats all:D.

Look forward to meeting everyone!

Well, had not the previous administration gotten us into this giant debt hole, who knows what could have been done if the current administration was able to start at ground level, (not the 20,000 leagues under the sea that Bush left us in).

Agreed, but at some point you have to acknowledge how crappy it is that they did that and move on. Its not fair, but that is the way that it is. Is it fair that Obama gets hampered from his agenda by a 11 trillion dollar debt accrued by previous presidents? No. However, is it responsible to send the country into even more debt? Absolutely not.

True but considering the condition Obama inherited, how and where would he get the funds? The money has to come from somewhere...so where?

Can't wait to go rafting with all you SDNers!!!

Is anyone still looking for a roomate? I found an amazing house 1/2 mile past UNECOM on Hills Beach Road. It's on the ocean, has a huge deck, new kitchen, amazing back yard, and two extra rooms for offices. It would be $600 per month between two people.

I'm a really laid back and easy to live with. If you're interested let me know ASAP

Hi everyone,

My roommate just found out that she has to defer for a year, so I am suddenly caught without someone. I have a cute 2 BR apartment, nice and spacious, FULLY furnished (including the second bedroom) with a really nice in ground pool in the back. The place is on pool street in Biddeford, so right down the street from school. Rent is $460 a month including heat and hot water. Cable/internet is $35 a month. I would prefer to live with a girl- if you are interested please email me! I'll be up there from thursday through sunday so if you would like to come see the place you can stop by anytime.

Thanks!!
