Why was this thread started in 2007 for the 2008-2009 application session.

Anyone know if they have cutoffs for MCAT? That's really screwing my application.:(

I applied and my MCAT has me concerned.

applying to nycom as well. the do i shadowed for 3+ years went here. i was also admitted into their bs/do program straight out of high school, but being stupid and immature declined. here i am three years later, hating myself for it. hope it doesn't count against me!

you won't receive anything from nycom from a while. don't worry. they start interviewing really really late in the cycle (November last year) so don't be surprised if you don't hear a peep from nycom for the next 2-3 months.

I completely understand your concerns, and honestly, there are plenty of people applying to the same school who are in your position! So take heart in the fact that MCATs aren't the only thing they look at. Just make yourself the best candidate possible. As for your specific question, they were telling me that the cut off was a 19! However, having a score of at least a 24 makes you competitive. I hope this helps. Good luck and maybe I'll get to see you at orientation! I'm definitely applying as well to NYCOM.

I was OOS and interviewed and was accepted. Looking at my classmates for this year, they are heavily Northeast-oriented, but that shouldn't discourage you from applying. I came from California

Thanks for the reply. May I ask how your stats were? I'm trying to gauge which OOS schools I should apply to. No need to reply if you feel uncomfortable divulging that info. All the best with your med school career.

thanks! good luck w the applications. i would say for OOS, look at schools that you can see yourself living/studying in for the next 4-8 years (i say 8 bc many students end up in residency in the same area as their medical school training). there's also some subjective component to the schools as well, hopefully you'll be able to feel this out by doing some research on them and interviewing when the time comes.

Now I am aware that it depends on 100,000 factors like:

Planetary Orientation
Earth's magnetic field direction
Adcom having gotten laid last night
Little irish guys in green suits with a rainbow behind them
Vietnamese witch doctors
Stop and Shop having coco pebbles in stock
Tidal currents
Weather patterns
OMFG ATP

But does anyone know approximately what stats are needed to get the secondary/interview at nycom? Just a ballpark?

Rent isn't too bad if you live with a roommate or two in glen cove (10-15 mins from school). I have classmates who pay something like $500-600 in rent per month. That's not bad at all for NY living :)

If the apartmetns are 600$/month then it isn't really that bad.... I've had to pay that much sharing a two bed apartment right here in boring old Michigan.

Most everyone has a car and drives (a few commute by bus and train but it can take them hours). Living in walking distance to NYCOM would pretty much mean living in a very pricey mansion.

i share a 4 br house w three other people and our rent is 500/month per person. we are close to school as well... where it really hurts is if you live on your own. a 1 br studio or apt is quite pricey in the area, so the most economical option is always to share a house w some other students. this will really help keep your living costs down, esp if you can carpool w some of your classmates.

So NYCOM is a top choice for me and it scares me to think they only give you the secondary if you are interviewing. Right now I am involved in research that has been great for my clinical exposure because basically the majority of what I do is talk/deal with patients and families all day and obtain consent forms. I started this after I submitted my primary so is there a way to update my current information through the school to show them how much clinical exposure I have experienced since and will be experiencing all year (because it's what I'm doing on my year off). Any input would be great. Thanks guys!

Write a letter and include your duties and why it's been an important experience for you, and say that you wish for them to consider it as part of your application, as it began after submitting AACOMAS.

So I've been working on something that I mentioned in my AACOMAS but now it's completed. I'm wondering if i should send the finished product now or if I should just hope to get invited and send it then?

Is it something that you'd physically send to them? Like a thesis or something? If so, I'd just let them assume that you finished it and talk about it during an interview.

I'd only update them if something has changed since AACOMAS, and you'd really like for them to know about it.

Anyone else find it odd how late NYCOM gets going with the process? I mean, I wouldn't mind seeing NY in the winter time--if that's the case--but it seems counterproductive. Many good applicants will be committed before NYCOM even considers them.

Yeah NYCOM has a history of starting late, but on the flip side, it also interviews until late in the season as well. Last year, I think we stopped interviews around beginning of May. So, some people get to see NYCOM when the weather gets better! :)

Good luck to all the applicants!

It's hard to compare them head to head because Touro is still brand new. As it stands now, NYCOM has been around for 30 yrs so we have a proven curriculum and reputation. However, since the vast majority of schools teach the same basic sciences material I don't think your education will lack at either. It really does matter on the student. NYCOM has a systems based curriculum and Touro has a subjects based curriculum.

NYCOM is located in Long Island which is about 40 mins by car to NYC. We have most of our clinicals on LI with quite a few spots in Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island. I don't know if Touro has secured all of their clinical rotation sites yet so you may want to clarify it with some current touro students.

Touro is located in Harlem which is in upper manhattan. Rent would probably be a lot more expensive if you decide to live in the city.

Sorry if this is so vague but it's hard to compare the two schools until Touro becomes more established. Good luck!

Touro-NV is located in a pretty good area. However, there is no campus, it is just one building.

I don't know about this school, but in general, a high MCAT isn't really needed if you have experience. I got a 22 on the MCAT and got accepted to a med school for next year, but I have a lot of experience since I am a medic in the Army. The statistics say retaking is shaky at best, and tends to decrease your score. HOWEVER, (that's a big contrast keyword!!! I teach kaplan too much) if you weren't prepared or had a psychological issue, you can definitely improve.

Just an FYI, I retook and went +5 on the MCAT. I felt horrible afterwards and thought I did worse. So don't go on your gut feeling. Just relax and wait! Too late to cancel now ;)

Dear Applicant for the Entering Class of 2009:

We are pleased to acknowledge receipt of your AACOMAS application. The Admissions Committee will be reviewing applications on a rolling basis, with interviews beginning in November. Selection for interviews will be based upon the AACOMAS primary application. Please note this valuable information:

* Supplemental applications will only be sent to candidates who are chosen to be interviewed.

* You may have your letters of recommendation forwarded directly to NYCOM Admissions at this time. We require either Pre-Professional Committee Recommendations or three individual Letters of Recommendation from faculty members (two must be from science faculty). Please forward them to:

New York College of Osteopathic Medicine/NYIT
Attn: NYCOM Admissions Office
Northern Boulevard
PO Box 8000
Old Westbury, NY 11568-8000

Please note that we do not participate in VirtualEvals.

* Since all future notifications will be sent by mail, it is important that you notify AACOMAS directly of any changes in your address and contact information.

* Due to the large volume of applications received by NYCOM it will not be possible to conduct individual status checks. We will be contacting you regarding the completion of your application as the Admissions Committee conducts reviews.

We look forward to reviewing your application and wish you success in your academic pursuit.

I called NYCOM about a week ago as part of my weekly check up on my schools, anxiety ritual haha Anddd i was gettnig worried because I couldnt remember if I sent my LORs to NYCOM (although im positive i did and im just being ridiculousss). I immediately called back (haha) and she reassured me that you don't need the LORs to get the secondary. Once they invite you to fill it out/interview you can check if your LORs are out...

Wow!!! That's what I'm scared to death of...doing worse; then I shouldn't have retaken and delayed my application process. And this time I was getting 30 or even 31 on all my practices. I can't understand why I haven't heard from any school yet; other than my MCAT score, what is wrong with my app? Good luck to you. Are you a NY resident?

yes I'm from NY - long island actually. what is your MCAT score? i'm sure you will hear from places, especially if the rest of your application is strong. and don't be discouraged because of my story .. i feel like my going down from an already poor score is a true exception. i was devasted but hopefully something will work out.

you delayed your application process? i actually did the same thing, to study and retake the test (didn't go as i planned) so I am doing reasearch during the year between college and med school (hopefully). what are you doing? have you applied to schools in your area? -- that may help

Your score CAN go up after a retake. Two points though:

1) Make sure you are qualitatively MORE prepared. Don't be a statistic. The most common result is +/- 2 points around your score. Check the published data.

2) Don't gauge your performance on how you feel. I felt worse the second time, but did better. Attack the test. Make sure you are scoring 1-2 points OVER your goal score on practice tests.

Good luck.

2. ive heard that NYCOM is one of the most competitive do schools in the sense that even though it doesnt have the highest average stats soooo many apply there (making it harder to get into)..is this true?

I have no idea about your second question, but as far as the first, NYCOM doesn't typically send rejections (if at all). That's one of the biggest complaints that I've seen on SDN over the past few years. They'll let everyone hang during and even beyond the interview season. Don't panic if you haven't heard from them yet. Their interview season starts later and therefore ends later. There is plenty of time left for NYCOM!

Which sucks, because most other schools start their interviews earlier, and if you get accepted at one of them, you'll most likely have to put a deposit down by 12/15.

I have received two emails from NYCOM saying basically the same thing: "we got your primary, now send your recommendations." However, the emails were not identical, I was just wondering if anyone has received the same two emails?
yes i got two of them.. so i called to make sure they received the letters from the first time i sent them.. they said not to worry, those e-mails are automated.. so as long as you sent your letters, you should be fine.

Yup. I paid a deposit at another school - tons of people in my class did. In the long run a couple thousand dollars isn't that big of a deal.

To quote an email we got from our Dean...

"The class of 2012 accepted 297 students which brings our total enrollment to 1,176 students. Of the 4,849 applicants, 6% were accepted (1 of 18 students)."

To those of you who are worried because you didn't get an interview invite yet, don't be. NYCOM usually interviews from November to April and there are plenty of students in our class with great scores that didn't interview until the Spring. NYCOM doesn't send out rejection letters so if you didn't hear anything from them it can be a bit worrisome but don't give up on them until late April/early May.

ah, i see my mental estimate of that figure was a little off. thanks for the specifics.

and to the applicants for this cycle -- hang in there! the NYCOM admissions office is a very busy place but it doesn't mean they are ignoring you, even if you are concerned that you haven't gotten invites at this point. it's still early in the game, try to be patient! i know thats hard, i remember being in your shoes, but hopefully doors will open for all of you intent on going into medicine.

What are you complaining about: in state, 29 MCAT, 3.9 sci, 3.7 overall, reasonable med experience, research, unusual EC, etc...?!!

In all fairness its not always THAT easy - so just because someone has good stats does not mean they are guaranteed acceptance . I was one of the few on the wait list last year (no doubt one of the worst experiences ever), and didn't have much different marks - but I was out of state. Even with that said I still think you have a great chance at getting in!

Good luck to everyone, it seems like I'm gonna try and stick it out once more with you all.

I don't have the money to pursue both schools at the same time.Depending on how I feel about the school after the interview, I may choose to withdraw from Touro-NY and use that $2000 towards NYCOM in the event I get accepted....vice-versa.

Don't really have a first choice. My stats are pretty good for NYCOM and the fact that I'm in-state may help. Also I'm one of first group to be interviewed. So these factors may favor my chance for an acceptance. But I'll make the decision after the interview on thursday.

I understand your position. I am in a similar boat regarding my out of state applications, and am thinking of taking out another 5k "student" loan for winter quarter, which begins 12/1, in order to fund the rest of the interview/deposit process so I can apply more broadly.

I understand your confidence and I also understand money may be a big issue, but in this process, and I'm sure others will agree with me, you NEVER give up a sure thing for a maybe like that... strange things happen and would you want to end up not going to any school for 2k in your pocket that you now have to spend reapplying next year (or the better scenario is getting in somewhere else that you don't like as much as touro, for example)...

can't agree with you enough. it's a hard enough process, you shouldn't close any doors before they're even made available to you. hedge your bets on where you know you got in, not where you THINK you'll get it.

Your MCAT is above the average at NYCOM (27) but your GPA is lower (3.5-3.6). In my personal opinion it's going to depend on your other application items such as personal statement, EC's, LORs, etc.

If you don't hear back from NYCOM in a month or so, send an update letter or a letter of intent. It was very very competitive last year and hardly anyone got off the waitlist. This year it's expected to be even more competitive due to a spike in applications. Good luck!

The funny thing is that I came away from the NYCOM interview leaning more towards Touro-NY. I waited a couple of days before I wrote my review to see if the feeling I came away from the school with remains. NYCOM is a great school but I wasn't really impressed with it. The students seem nice and warm but one can easily get lost in such a large class size. The lecture hall was a massive auditorium and I don't think I can sit there all day without getting drowned by the crowd or pay attention to the lecture.

Secondly, the administrative staff weren't really as friendly as Touro-NY in my opinion. The Phd interviewers were very nice though.Thirdly, the technology was nice but needs a tard improvement. The anatomy lab was ok but I've seen better. If I'm gonna be hanging around with a corpse all day, I might as well be in a comfortable environment.

Finally, I didn't think the tuition was worth what they were providing. They have good rotation sites but they also share some of these with Ross and SGU students. So I don't think it's a great edge.
NYCOM's strength comes from its students. They produce great match list each year but I think these students will do fine in any school they are in.

One caveat: The guy I interviewed with came away with the opposite feeling. He was impressed with NYCOM and didn't like Touro-NY. Different strokes I guess!

I will be sending my deposit to Touro-NY. Goodluck everyone !

They produce great match list each year but I think these students will do fine in any school they are in.

i was initially concerned about the class size as well. funny things happen though when you start medical school... we spend so much time together during the first block, it's pretty easy to make friends and meet new people. there are a ton of clubs and the second years do an excellent job of promoting them and recruiting us into getting involved. if you're not a more outgoing person, this could potentially be a problem -- but i think this would be a problem at ANY school, not just NYCOM.

the lecture halls are large, yes, but the first 6 weeks of school is lecture heavy and you do spend a lot of time in lecture, there is no way around it. you'd be surprised how quickly you get used to it, and in fact, the vast majority of students are focusing and it is not the case that students talk and disrupt.

i personally think the anatomy is set up well. there are 7-8 students per cadaver, and are laid out such that at any given time, you are not dissecting next to another group. furthermore, the groups are split so that only half the groups are dissecting on a given day. during the first half of the lab, one half of your group (you + 2-3 other people) will do the dissection, then the rest of your group members (3-4 more people) come in and you finish dissecting and teach them what you've found. for the next lab, the roles are reversed. the anatomy labs are also open late at night, especially during the week leading up to exams so you have time to review. i personally don't think anything is lacking and think the anatomy faculty is very helpful, more than enough bodies, equipment, sinks, lockers downstairs, etc.

the rotation sites you spoke about -- its not just NYCOM students sharing those sites w Ross or SGU, but nearly every other medical school in the NYC metro area as well. bottom line is that there are a lot of medical schools in the area, and to some degree there is competition for rotations. that's simply the nature of NYC.

but if you have any specific questions about the school, feel free to ask. good luck everyone!

i must agree with my friend here... i don't want to sound like a nycom fanboy, but i remember last year around the same time there were a few threads about students frustrated with nycom so i don't think it's uncalled for to state how i think the school is great and as long as you work hard you will succeed and get a lot out of it. most of our faculty are great and approachable.

i personally have almost no issues with nycom and am very happy with my choice.

My primary was submitted 3 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything. My stats are pretty average for the school (27, 3.7+). Is this normal?

I heard they don't necessarily need LOR's to send secondary/interview invite, so I haven't sent them yet. Someone please correct me if I mistaken.

Thank you.

rennykim,

I did send the LORs, I thought their email said to send them in. The emai came after I submitted the primary and basically told me I won't have to do a secondary unless I get an interview.

I also had Leheste, he was very nice and we had a pretty cool discussion about the conflict between the US and Russia. He is very knowledgable and I believe he heads up the neuroscience research at NYCOM.

Hi, just wondering did you choose the morning or the afternoon interview session to get Dr Leheste? Thank you!

There was no choice on the day I went. All interviews that day were conducted in the afternoon. There are certain days that you can choose which part of the day to interview. If you are asking because you want to interview with him specifically and are wondering which session to choose, I can't help ya, sorry. I am sure you can call the school and find out.

Anybody know the name of the male D.O. interviewer the morning of 11/11? I know he specializes in OMM and this was his first year interviewing, if that helps at all. I never wrote his name down and it's completely slipped my mind. Thanks.

if it's his first year interviewing, it's not Saggio.

It could be: Gilliar, Van Arsdale, Yao, Terzella, Flaum. That more or less covers every male "OMM specialized" doctor we have in the department that I've seen so far. Any of those ring a bell?

Just got a call from Admissions. They sent me an interview invite and it came back to them, because they accidentally merged my permanent and mailing addresses into one incorrect address. I checked my AACOMAS app to make sure this wasnt my mistake but everything was right. I guess they just typed it incorrectly into my file. I dont know how long ago the letter was sent, but now I will be interviewing in late January. Im thrilled to have an interview, but wish I could have done it sooner, just because I will probably have to make a deposit for another school before then! They received my aacomas app in late august so it had been a long time. If anyone is anxious, maybe check to make sure the address they have on file for you is correct?

I was just reading last year's NYCOM thread and someone wrote that "rumor has it that anyone who interviews during the first two weeks of November were already accepted pre-interview, and the interview is just a formality."

Yep I heard that rumor too! I hope we all get in hhahahah. I just found out I got wait listed to Bradenton, so im very anxious for some good news haha. hopefully we will hear back from NYCOM soon!!

I went to interview at VCOM last monday and im supposed to hear back from them tomorrow! The interview was pretty casual but long! Three separate people interview you for like 15-20 minutes. If were accepted, we're supposed to be receiving a call after 3pm tomorrow :scared:

Ohhhhhhhhh wow that's awesome!! You said their program over at VCOM is pretty great so that would be good to hear some good news from them tomorrow. I still haven't gotten my DO letter to them, but they should be receiving it around Monday or Tuesday so hopefully I'll be complete there soon so they can review my file.

I was waitlisted at Bradenton, too! I was so disappointed. I loved that school. However, I wrote on my secondary that I wasn't sure yet if PBL was right for me (just trying to be honest) so I think that may have hurt my chances, since they ONLY do PBL. Then I sat in on the session and was so impressed by PBL. Ughhh very frustrating to be honest sometimes!! lol

Oh man I hope we get into NYCOM, too. NYCOM is pretty high up on my list, so hearing some good news would be a great relief. I hope it isn't actually going to be "around the holidays" that we hear, because it would suck to have to wait that long.

I called wednesday. The receptionist in the admissions office was not very intimidating...so don't worry about that. She did tell me that adcom was planning on meeting shortly after the Thanksgiving break. Monday??? It is impossible to tell and the anticipation is pretty unbearable. If anyone hears anything back from them, please post, as will I.

I've called them in the past and they were less than friendly  Hmmm shortly after Thanksgiving?? I wish soooo badly I could find out ON Monday because I wuld rather not go on my TOUROCOM interview on Tuesday... :thumbdown I prefer NYCOM.
