When I started the applying to med schools I told myself I wanted to stay in CA and would only go out of state if I had to, but I fell in love with DCOM  and choose this school even though I did get into a "more established" CA school. I think the dedication and experiance of the faculty and staff, as well as the awesome technology and the friendliness/helpfulness of the students were all key factors. Also, the area as beautiful, some days when I wake up and go outside I am just amazed that I live here! I also like that the school is in a small/rural town and that DCOM is dedicated to serving underserved areas like the one we are in.

I really hope you enjoy the school and good luck on your interview!!:luck:

This is basically what you hear from all the students on your interview day. I didn't hear any hesitation in their opinions, nor did any tell us something bad about the school. Obviously, we didn't talk to every student, but you just get a great feeling about the school.

thank you both...

after reading about LMU-DCOM i was really excited about it (i lived in tn before & loved it)... i was just a little hesitant because ive already been accepted at a "more established" place as well. hopefully I will fall in love as you have when I go visit next week!
Do you know how long you have to wait before they let you know if youre accepted? I have to put a deposit down by dec 14th so hold a spot at one of the other schools. id hate to lose the $

Monkey I think sometimes if you let them know that DCOM is your top choice and you have another school waiting for a deposit they will let you know about your decision a little bit quicker. I don't know if this always works but I would definitely call them right before your deposit is due if you haven't heard anything and ask.

thanks everyone for the well wishes. I don't believe that I made a sufficient attempt to relay the level of my excitement in my original post. I am truly happy to have this opportunity. Last night was the first night I was able to sleep well. I feel as if a large weight has been taken off of my shoulders. I am that much closer to fulfilling my dream of being a doctor and having the opportunity to receive that training at a great facility is one of the greatest feelings in the world.

That's pretty common - my app was on hold at a few schools last year. It's definitely not a rejection, so don't worry. They may offer you an interview later in the cycle. :xf:

At first, I was disappointed b/c we didn't have more sites in Knoxville, but I am over it now. The sites we have seem to be really good and the docs are very eager and excited to have us. I am really looking forward to getting on rotations and applying all of this knowledge that is trapped somewhere in my brain. But so far, these sites seem to be pretty solid.

I know this is a little off topic but was wondering if some current students had any advice.

I am currently engaged (my fiance attends Vanderbilt and is in school year round) We are trying to determine a date to get married (we were planning Aug 8 2009, but now that I got accepted I saw where school starts July 28)

What I am wanting to know is what the schedule of finals during fall semester is like as far as if you can schedule your finals how you want or what. (we are looking at Dec. 19 of next year)

I know this is off topic, but I was just curious about the school schedule

Docman-

Congratulations on the engagement... School does start at the very end of July, and next year will most likely be a replica of this year... We don't have finals, per se, but we do have an exam that is the last one we take... it is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th. I would assume that it will be the same next year, and that would make that "final" on December 16th of next year, leaving you Thursday and Friday before the Saturday of the wedding. HOWEVER... I don't want to be repsonsible for you not showing up to your wedding, so if I were you, I would e-mail Dr. Leo (Associate Dean of Students) or Dr. Kiick (Associate Dean of Pre-Clinical Sciences... basically in charge of the classwork portion of med school) and ask him to give you a more definitive schedule. The other option is that you get married a few weeks before school starts, take your honeymoon, then have a week to prepare for classes. It would be nice to have a honeymoon to look forward to after your first semester of med school, but it would also be nice to married earlier... I hope that helps

Hyper truth...

there are numerous options for you. First (and easiest) is Student housing at the University Inn/Student Apartments (I don't exactly know what they call it). They normally show it on a tour, but maybe they didn;t for you. It is a converted hotel... pictures should be online (DCOM's site) and other people on SDN should be able to give a better description. I know a lot of people who live on their own. They rented an apartment, a room from someone with a house, etc. That's what I do. I live in Knoxville, and my wife lives there to run her business, but I rent a room from a guy in a house up here, live up here during the week, and go home on the weekends. I know some people who live on the Northeast side of Knoxville and commute (it's pretty tough the first semester, but is more doable thereafter)... MJB on Student Doctor network can provide the details. I know a few people who live in Caryville/LaFollette, TN, most of whom have spouses who work in Knoxville or down near there. others rent in Tazeweel, Middlesboro or even into Virginia. Bottom line, there are places to rent, places to buy (if that is your fancy and you have a little extra cash... the market is pretty good if you're a buyer)

I hope that helps... start looking and you'll be surprised how much you find

Hi everyone!

I'm new to SDN, and I will be interviewing with LMU on Dec 16th. Is anyone else interviewing on Dec 16th? I'll be flying in from FL on monday morning and I'm planning to attend the pizza social at the Oasis on Dec 15. Will anyone else be there? I also had a quick question for those who have already interviewed...About how many people are interviewed on any given day? Thanks and good luck to everyone!!! :D

Have fun at the Oasis, it is a good chance to meet fellow interviewees and of course ask the students questions. I think we were supposed to have 12 interviewees our day, but only 11 showed up, something like that. good luck to you.

I would just add this. There are going to be a BUNCH of people in the Class of 2011 leaving in May/June to go to Rotations. I would guess there will be more than enough rental properties for the Class of 2013.

I definitely agree - if you have the option, have the wedding next spring or summer before school starts. I had a whole semester off the spring of my wedding and still was running around like a crazy lady trying to get stuff done! You could do it over Christmas break provided your fiancee doesn't require any help of you, because you'll have your face in the books - especially for our last exams which are typically worth the most points. That would just be sad though if you didn't even have time to get excited about your wedding!

Totally check out the interview feedback page like missdochopeful suggested, being prepared for the questions on there definitely eased my nerves. And you should not feel that you are late in the game at all, I still consider this early! I didn't interview until late Feb and it was my 1st interview too. Also, dont think that not being from this area is a set-back, their are people from both classes from all over, I came from Ca and had never even be anywhere close to this part of the country before. I do think a desire to give back to smaller, underserved communities like this one though is a plus. You just let them know your strong interest in the school and you'll be fine! Good Luck :xf:

With the recent posts talking about expensive plane tickets, let me suggest a way to help out. For future interviewees, look at flying into either Louisville or Nashville and driving the 3 hours to LMU-DCOM. Tyson-McGee airport in Knoxville is outrageously expensive and these 2 other options are much cheaper. Southwest flies into both cities, as does every other airline, so you can definitely find some great deals. Just thought I would help out the wallet b/c God knows mine is super-duper thin right now......*sigh*

OK....I feel like I am obligated to reply to this being a Chicagoian. Yeah, Oasis is good, but it is nowhere close to Giordano's or any other pizza joint in Chicago. Yes, I think its better than Pizza Hut, but it is way behind Giorodano's, Gino's East, Aurelio's, etc....you can't get better than those.....and Gino's East is the BEST!!!

And being someone who is well not from Chicago, but has been there many a time, pretty much any Chicago pizza is going to be better than Oasis. It's just a fact.

Oasis is yummy though, just don't go in there expecting some Chicago-esque pizza :D

I feel like im a little late in the game and im not from the appalachian region, so i know that doesnt help either. does anyone have any advice/tips for this nervous wreck? this is my first interview (hopefully the first of many!) and LMU is definitely at the top of my list. Thanks for the help! :o

First of all, relax! I interviewed on 12/2 and it was nothing to worry about. Going to the pizza night really helps to break the ice, since you get to meet the students and other interviewees. The interview itself is very conversation-like. They are not out to probe and interrogate you, they just want to make sure you have a personality and can communicate with others.

Best of luck!

Yeah, Gino's East is pretty awesome (the hub had some ordered on dry ice for an anniversary, swoon)! But, imho, out of the pizzas *I* have had, Oasis is #3 (ok, forgot about Gino's East) on my list. But maybe I was just really hungry? Or I'm not very pizza-ly cultured? Guess I'll have to give it another shot to confirm. ;)

I was wondering if any current students could comment on the need to take anatomy before starting at DCOM. I was never able to take anatomy at my university (budget cuts) and am considering taking a class at a community college this spring. Unfortunately they broke it up into 2 levels but I got the approval to take both at the same time. Oh and I work full-time with a second part-time job so time is short but I'll do it if necessary. Any thoughts?

I know my wife was really glad to already have had anatomy in undergrad. The work load is fierce, so anything you can do to free up brain space would appear to be worth it to me.

I would say if you have the time and want to it doesn't hurt, but its definitely not necessary. I had never had it before and did fine. I know several others in the same situation. The level of detail for anatomy in medical school will trump any undergraduate course. Personally, I would just work, save some money and worry about the anatomy once you got here.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about taking it now. I didn't take it in undergrad, and I'm doing just fine. It definitely would have helped to have had it in undergrad, but I really wouldn't bother picking up an extra course between now and then, especially if your time is already pretty tight. Spend you time between now and July relaxing as much as possible. You'll be learning all you need to know about Anatomy in no time.

Questions for students: How well do you all think the faculty have done with integrating different types of learning? I guess what I'm asking is how much time you all spend doing things other than just didactic lectures? For instance, do you all spend a lot of time on clinical case correlations, working with MEDMEN and standardized patients, and doing computer simulations? Are those experiences integrated well into the topics you are going over in lecture at that time?

I think we do as good a job as any school really. We aren't a PBL school so there is a large quantity of our day spent in didactic lectures, however we do utilize computer simulations and standardized patients starting early in the first year. By medmen I'm assuming you mean something like a Simman from Laerdal? If so then we use them as well, about every month to 1.5 mo. We don't use it extensively but then again most wouldn't know what to do anyhow so it works out well. Simulations in my opinion are best handled in internship/residency when the student has a more complete knowledge base to work with. Often in the simulations you are just messing up hoping to fall somewhere close to right. That in mind I think we utilize our simulation equipment very well.

Heads up to anyone interviewing Monday - you probably won't be able to get into the anatomy lab to check it out. We have our last lab practical exam that day :scared: But if you're staying overnight, you might be able to make arrangements to check it out later that evening if it's really important to you. it will most likely be chilly (in the 40's)... I'd wear your suit, and bring a rain jacket or something in case. It's not really cold here, but it has been chilly lately... You're not outside a ton, unless they changed it a lot from last year.

I hadn't planned on applying to a DO program but DCOM has definitely changed my mind. You all seem genuinely happy with the school. Couple of questions now that I am officially a member of the LMU-DCOM c/o 2013!!!!!!

How often do you have tests? Theyre graded traditionally as I recall, correct?

Any decent restaurants to recommend in reference to taking family/girlfriend out to eat when visiting in town?

Any idea when next year's white coat ceremony will be?

Assuming it is like this year, you'll have tests approximately every 3-4 weeks (usually 3). They are tested as follows. Anatomy, Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine (Biochem, etc), and Foundations of Modern Healthcare are all tested together in a block test every 3 weeks. Our osteopathic tests (lab and written) are three times a semester, and our EPC (Essentials of Patient Care) class (written) is tested twice in the semester. By traditionally, I assume you mean A, B,C, F (passing is above 70). You get individual grades of course, as well as a couple of points at the end of the semester if you show up to all our group tests. (Ask for more info).

I am not a good person to ask on places to eat out, because I try to save money as much as possible, as well as I go to Knoxville a lot to see my wife (I live up here duirng the week, and go home on the weekends to see her... at least right now)

White coat is typically the third weekend in October, but the best idea would be to call the Admissions office and ask... they'll have the academic calendar more or less made by now (I think)

Congratulations on your acceptance... enjoy your last 8 months of freedom (I'm kidding... not really)

Congratulations!

You can look at our class schedule on the school's website under "academics," it says when we've had all our tests... usually we have had our block exams every 3-4 weeks. Our white coat ceremony this year was October 18th, so I would think it would probably be around the same time next year. As far as restaurants go, the selection is limited, but one that most people really like and have to go to at least once is a local one, Webb's down in Cumberland Gap, across from the post office. They have your typical southern foods. A lot of people also like Old Town Grille in Tazewell, which has a nicer atmosphere, you can actually get a beer there, and bring some wine and they will serve it to you if you so desire.

Hope that helps :)

Well, in my totally unbiased opinion, I think you should pick DCOM :D

You've interviewed there, you know how awesome our facilities and faculty are.

Are you from IL? If so, DCOM is closer to home, you can drive there (I am from WI, and the drive home really isn't bad) I suppose you could drive to NSU too, but that would take a hella long time. Also, NSU is in FL, FL is humid and sticky and hot way too long. Here at DCOM, we have all 4 seasons! Ok, you probably will base your decision on more than the weather, so if you have any specific questions or concerns, just ask and I'll try to answer them best I can!

I need to decide on LMU-DCOM or NSU this week... any input?

I just interviewed at LMU and am accepted at NSU. Honestly, I'm still sticking with NSU.

I thought it was a nice school and everyone was very nice and helpful but the stories they told were exactly the same as everywhere else. I don't mean that in a bad way, but it was just the same stuff I heard everywhere else. The facilities were nice, but they weren't awe inspiring to me. Nearly every school I've been to works with sim labs and integrates early clinical exposure. Everything was shiny and new, but it isn't like the stuff at nova is bad by any means.

I find the required laptop a fairly trivial negative. No matter what way you spin it, I simply HATE being told what computer to buy. You can cite all the reasons but I was actually on the committee for my own program in undergrad to decide, so I have probably have a more detailed understanding of the programs than many people.

Faculty: Both are great and will get you where you want. I've heard pros and cons with each. I really don't know what else to say about that. It is one of those things that you really don't know until you experience it for yourself.

Location: I like rural areas but aside from the nature, the area just did not click with me. I thought the little mini apartment things were more depressing than anything else, especially for over 500. I lived in a place that was only a little more per year, in a busy area and walking distance from my current campus with a full kitchen and a ton more space....and yes electric, internet, cable, etc. was including in the bill.

Rotations: I feel like NSU wins this one for me. You have the opportunity to go to small hospitals if you want, but you don't have to. I like the structure and organization of DCOMs, but I just wasn't that wowed by the options.

Tuition: NSU is cheaper for me, but I'm instate.

I think I reached LMU-DCOM with such ungodly high expectations from all the talk on here. In the end, nearly every anatomy and OMM lab has had cameras and tons of flat screen tvs at every school I've been to. They all have had wireless. They all have sim labs, and some were actually a little nicer. I did like the one to practice scrubbing in, but heck, I've done it at real ones a few times already. I felt the flow of the building was kind of odd and would've liked to see more than 15 little conference/study rooms. Another huge turnoff for me was that lack of a big gym. For most it isn't much of an issue, but as a person that is pretty hardcore into lifting the little thing with less plates total than I can already benchpress was a turnoff. I'm also a little biased because my brother lives near nova and I have a ton of friends that are going there for a variety of things. Everyone that chose DCOM loves the school and are extremely proud of it. I have no doubts that you will get a solid education there. I did feel like I was getting thrown a sales pitch a lot of the day.

In the end, you just need to do a gut check and look at your goals/what feels right. I know I won't get distracted in either location because I'm simply not the type to randomly go to a concert on a whim. I schedule my time and study accordingly to do it. Something like TV is my greatest enemy, and those are present at both locations!

It is hilarious....and yours truly is in it, along with NPEMTIV (he is giving me an EKG). There is a whole mess of other ones on youtube, so watch them and laugh. So, this does prove that we have time to do other things besides study......enjoy!!!!!!

Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And congratulations on all the acceptances!

I need to decide on LMU-DCOM or NSU this week... any input?

Go to the school where you feel more at home, because that's what it's going to be for a while! I remember falling in love with the DCOM when I visited - the staff and faculty are so generous and welcoming - if you get to be around them every day, you see that it's genuine and not a "sales pitch". Heck, Dean Stowers invited us all over for Thanksgiving dinner! They take care of us like family and that's really comforting when your nearest family member is 8 hours away in Michigan. As for NSU, I remember being unimpressed when I couldn't even get anyone in the admissions office to answer the phone or return my calls! I'm still convinced the phone sits on a desk in an empty room

People pick schools for different reasons and fortunately we don't all like the same school or it would make this process even tougher. Obviously we all picked this school because we liked it the best or it made sense for us, so you aren't going to get much unbiased feedback here. It's best that way though - I'd much rather have classmates that are equally passionate about DCOM as I am, then have classmates that don't really see what's so special about DCOM and take away seats from those who do.

Good luck with your decision :luck: And now that I am done with my first semester of medical school I'm going to do something other than stare at a computer screen all day :soexcited: Merry Christmas, y'all!

Love the videos haha! Nascardoc... can you comment on TN winters? We're having terrible weather in IL right now and I need to choose between NSU and DCOM this week. I know you understand when I say terrible weather ha.

This is based strictly on my experience of living in TN for the last 18 months, and the new definitions I've learned for these terms (I'm from KS/MO):
"Cold" is anything below 50 or so.
"REALLY COLD" is anything below about 35-40.
"Windy" is anything over a slight breeze.
"Snow" is flurries that, IF THEY STICK, are gone by noon in almost all cases.
I've actually seen schools closed due to the THREAT of snow. (granted, there are a LOT of back roads that do get slick pretty easily)

The most treacherous weather I've experienced here is a really heavy rain which causes the water to pool on the roads (the roads are not really sloped much to allow for runoff)

Any other questions, feel free to ask. Those are just my impressions.

Congrats to 2012'ers on finishing 1st semester.

LOL!!! TN winters are nothing like Chicago. Last year, we had a total accumulation (for all season) of maybe 5 inches of snow...and like MJB said, its melts right away. Its about 45 degrees in TN this week and 15 in Chicago.....nuff said. TN doesn't have the cold weather like Chicago, and there is never a ton of wind. The biggest threat is ice, espcially after it rains during the day and gets below freezing at night. But as for comparing what we are used to, TN winters are very mild.

As for your decision, the best advice I can give is to go with your gut.....the "feeling." I had it when I interviewed at DCOM and we didn't have a building to tour or anything, just promises (most of which they fulfilled). I don't know much about NSU, so a direct comparison, at least from my eyes, would be difficult. What I would ask of you, is to either post or PM me any questions, concerns, etc. about DCOM and I will be more than happy to answer them for you. I would prefer for someone to make an informed decision and be happy where they go rather than forcing someone to go somewhere. Obviously, I am biased towards DCOM and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone, but I want you to make the decision thats best for you. Let me know how I can help in anyway.

Got into Chicago today and I can say I don't miss the cold weather. And with the 10-inches of snow and 1/2-inch of ice on the way tomorrow, and crappy ass traffic that accompanies all of it, it should be a fun "reunion." I still love this city, but damn.....its crazy.

So many helpful comments, thanks! Honestly I def had the "feeling" at DCOM last year and then again this year. I went to my interview at NSU to reassure my DCOM decision but did find some info on NSU that caught my attention in a positive way. The winter question may have seemed a little silly to most of you but I seriously cannot handle another intense winter. I get SADD every year and look forward to summer all year long. So after coming back from FL earlier this week with a temp change of 70 degrees (no joke), I became pretty curious of TN's winter. Def sounds much better!!

Just to make you all laugh, and learn how ridiculous chicago winter is if you are unaware...
Went to get my car out of O'Hare's lot this week after being parked for 5 days outside and it was frozen to the ground. Trunk was frozen shut, had to put luggage in back seat. Windows frozen shut, had to get out of car to pay tolls (lots in the area too), had to break apart the ice chunks on my wipers, and even scrape some ice on the INSIDE of a window. Oh yes and then my normally 15-20 min drive home from work last night took an hour. I'm so ready to get out of here! And welcome home Nascardoc, ha! Tomorrow will be terrible...

I don't miss that stuff AT ALL. I don't THINK I've scraped a windshield since moving here. The weather here cannot be beat in my opinion. It's not as hot in the summer as back home and it's nowhere near as cold in the winter.

Heck, I'm strongly considering going golfing this afternoon. I'm gonna guess it's a bit chilly to do that back in KC, or in Chicago. Actually, just looked and my hometown is under an Ice Storm Warning. Don't miss those suckers at all.

There are sincere sales pitches. ;) I didn't mean to sound so negative. I'm sure if I wound up there I'd be perfectly content and champion the school as much as anyone else. I'm just stubborn. When I got done with NSU I had all sorts of the same weird feelings. I def. believe Dean Stauers is a genuinely kind and caring person. I had no doubt about that when I met him, or the rest of the staff. I talked to him for a while. Every person I met there was happy, regardless of just finishing an exam. For such a revolutionary and supposedly technologically advanced school, they really didn't show much of that, which was what I expected. They simply used the same statements that every other school made. The sim labs are cool, but my research involved those things and making nursing/medical students and doctors freak out, so it wasn't anything new to me. The lecture halls were very nice, but I don't think I've been to a place yet that didn't have nice lecture halls with big projection/screens of some sort. The only thing I could ever imagine truly expanding on would be the breakout room type things. There are what? Like 15 there. For 280 med students or however many are there total during the 2 years, it just seems a little scant. Not a deal breaker by any means...just inconvenient.

And yes, the admissions office is a pain in the arse at NSU. Thankfully, you don't deal with them afterwards. I now just go straight to people via email and get instant responses.

Again, I don't want to make it seem like I'm against the school or hated it by any means. I also probably went up there with the wrong goal in mind. I kind of viewed it a pitstop to see my sister and nephew rather than an interview and real opportunity. (I hadn't seen her for a long long time) It is also good to note that I have never fallen in love with any school or location until I'm removed from it. Its just my nature. I'm a stubborn pain in the arse like that. I supposedly have a letter at my house from LMU now. I'm going to assume it is a rejection. It sounded pretty small and I didn't interview well. :p

nobody can tell you besides the admissions committee. being this late with a 20Q seems pretty unlikely in my opinion. have you filled out an aacomas? if you have see if you can get a secondary in asap. if not, i'd say probably not going to happen. of course, stranger things have happened. if you can spend the money you might as well try.

Avg is a 24 or 25.

If you are from the tri-state area, AL, Ga, Miss., you stand a decent shot at an interview (who knows, but tha's a guess). 20 MCAT hurts, I'd just keep in touch with the school and see if you can make head-way by expressing continual interest.

Nothing is gonna happen with the DO/PhD degree for a few years....they still need to get the research building built. From my point of view, I see nothing happening with that for a minimum of 5 years, closer to 10. They are going to wait for at least a few classes to graduate before putting it into place. As for the DO/MBA program, I know they are close to it, but I don't know how close. I would email Dr. Leo to find out what the status is on that since I have not asked about it in awhile.

Everyone lives in harrogate for the first two years of basic science at DCOM. Then you move to the city where your core hospital is. During your third year you will do 7 months of rotations there. 2 more months will be done at different selective hospitals within a 60 mile radius from your core hospital. There is one month vacation time. The final 2 months of the year you can do electives anywhere you want. I plan to do "audition rotations" with these two months at away locations where residency programs I am interested are at.

I am pretty sure most of your 4th year rotations are near the 3rd year core hospital so you wont have to move again.

Let me throw my two cents in here for you. I am a mom from the class about to jump into rotations and my two kids are in school so I know your concerns. There are options available to you that would allow you to keep your kids in one school for the entire 4 years as long as you don't mind driving some. I live and will stay in Middlesboro and will be commuting to my core rotations in Morristown (along with a few of my classmates). I also know a few people who live in Tazewell and will be commuting to Morristown (this would be the best option to not have to move in my opinion). There are also those who live in Knoxville and have commuted to school this entire time. This option is good if you have a spouse who can't find work in Harrogate, you already live in Knoxville and want to stay or just plain ole love Knoxville and don't mind commuting for 2 years. As for selectives and electives (which make up the majority of the last 2 years) you can do those pretty much anywhere. The school has a bunch set up around the core hospitals but you can also set up some on your own. I know some people are planning on doing most of those in a different state completely. Should you choose to you will be able to do all of those w/in 60 miles of your core site though and more than likely w/in 60 miles of where you are living (ie: Tazewell or Middlesboro). Just keep in mind there are 3 months your 4th year that you have to do near your core site. All else is up to you.

Hopefully I haven't clouded the situation for you. Bottom line is if you plan ahead and don't mind comutting some you will be able to keep your kids in the same school the entire 4 years

The student apartments are great. Its close to the school, there is a pool, outside grills, volleyball court, basketball court and a gym. By the time you move in the fall they will have completed the renovations downstairs. They are adding a big lounge with a big screen tv (I assume it will be a plasma since everything else is), bar (which we stock with whatever we want), bike storage, expanding the gym and possibly adding a mini putting green. The only downside to the apartments is the fire alarm going off quite frequently but it seems to go off less and less.

So me and my wife will be moving out for the class of '13 and we're trying to figure out where to bank. We use Bank of America right now and will probably keep an account there but the closest one is in Knoxville. Is there a local bank that is decent in or around Harrogate/Middlesboro?

Commercial Bank is pretty good too. They've got lots of branches in the area, but not much further than 60 miles out (i don't think), but they've got a pretty good deal going on right now:
Hometown Rewards--free checking that earns you interest, ATM surcharge reimbursements, online banking/bill pay
Plus, the school's Balance of Aid checks are drafted thru them, so you get access to your money immediately instead of having to wait for it to clear.

Hi guys,
I have a quesiton about deposit at DCOM. I got accepted on Dec 4, 2008 and I sent a check of 2000 to DCOM on Dec 16, 2008 but still haven't heard anything from school. Is this normal or what? Do I need to call school for this?

Thanks
When shipping/receiving to/from up here, add a day to any delivery estimate.

In your case, there's a good chance everyone hit the road after the last exams on the 17th. I'd call Monday the 5th and double check.

I interviewed 11/17 and I remember nascardoc and a few others plugging the hiking/mountain biking/ outdoorsy type stuff in the area. I read online that the dorms become available July 1st, so I was considering coming up a few weeks early and having some fun before the insanity begins. Could I trouble anyone for some specifics on trails in the area/cool places to hike/mountain bike in the area and how to get there?

Hey squad, I'm not really big into outdoorsy stuff, but you could check out the Visitor Center here at the National Park. If you are in Middlesboro heading toward Harrogate, it's the exit right before the tunnel. We just got back from Christmas break, so other students will probably start trickling back onto SDN when they don't want to pay attention to lecture  They can probably give you better leads.

That is for dental insurance, not health insurance.

For health insurance, per semester it is $864 for student only, $1965 for student + spouse, $1685 for student + child(ren), and $2808 for famly. For dental, going in the same order, it is $135, $306, $371, and $541, respectively.

The insurance policy is really good, for everything. Plus, with the health insurance, there is no copay when you use the clinic on the 2nd floor of the school.

I just wanted to say that I got an interview on January 20th!! I'm so exited because this school is my top choice!!

My main question is does anyone happen to know the ratios of acceptance to interviewed? I know some schools interview a whole lot more than they accept. I am not from the surrounding area of the school (I live in FL) and was surprised the school called me for an interview.

Can anyone fill me in with some sort of stress releasing information

Just got the call from Amy today to schedule my interview, woohoo! I was happy to get the call b/c I'm from FL as well. I'm looking forward to some good pizza the night before too!

Anyone else interviewing on January 27th?

P.S. Let's GO GATORS! Show 'em what the SEC is made of!

Uh, the SEC actually lost the bowl challenge this year. PAC-10 won every bowl game they were in.

The SEC has a pretty run of the mill average against the big-10, just the games like Ohio State that are highly televised. I do find it funny how SEC folks are oblivious to this stuff though. The perceived weakness of the PAC-10 killed USC. They lost one game AWAY and didn't get to go to the national title because oregon state was perceived to be a weaker team. All of the PAC-10 teams then went off and won their games (5/5) and SEC I believe lost 2..maybe 3.

My interview is in...8 days and I am so pumped to get an interview from this school. I cannot wait to see the rural part of the US again. Tampa has so much traffic and congestion, which is nothing compared to where LMU is.

I hope to see all of the students on this "pizza night" that I am hearing about. From reading the posts, it seems that the pizza is really good!!

I everyone had a relaxing break and I can't wait for this interview so that I may show someone how passionate I am about medicine!!

it looks like someone may have answered this, but i'd also recommend commercial bank. since they have the LMU account, your financial aid clears the same day (which is helpful when you start running low!). also, the CLOSEST bank of america is in lake city, tn. i know this b/c that's where i drive if i HAVE to use a BoA....yesterday, in fact. it's 37 miles from harrogate, so not too bad... much better than drivig all the way to knoxville.

the other option would be to keep your BoA account(s), and just have someone (that you trust) deposit your check. there are several people in our class that live in knoxville, as well as several people in the class ahead of us... who will be gone when you get here, but you get the idea.

hope that helps! can't wait to meet you all!:D

Alright, another Californian! So-Cal just north of L.A. here and you?

I do have another question. What should I expect for weather in February? Note: it's currently about 85 degrees here today in middle of January so I'm a little bit spoiled—my cold weather and rain gear is limited but I have a few weeks yet to prepare. ;)

Also, since the interview day wraps up around 13:30, do you think I could make a 16:15 flight out of TYS?

Thanks for the replies.

No-Cal here, or at least I think thats how they classify Fresno, even though it is like right in the middle of Cali!

It's pretty cold here, definately has taken me some time to get used to it, but it's not nearly as bad as other places! I think today was like a high of 37 F and yesterday there was a little bit of a "snow flurry" (new term for me)! So be prepared for it to be cold and you might have to scrape some ice of your windsheild in the morning, but you'll be inside most of the time so I wouldn't go out of your way to get a big jacket or anything.

I would reccommend getting a later flight to be on the safe side, because even though they say 1:30 it could end up being more like 2-3, especially if you want to do all the tours and see the pinnicle (you can skip this stuff). Then, it takes 1.5 hrs to get to the airport (longer prob if its raining that day) and you gotta check in your rental, etc... But it is a small airport so check-in is usually fairly quick. So it is possible, but I always err on the side of caution. Sorry for the elaborate explaination!

First off, sincere congradulations to all who have either been accepted, interviewed/ing. Second, although I already have my own answer I guess I am looking for a little assurance or positive feedback that I didnt just nail the lid of the coffin on for my chances at LMU this season...My primary was submitted to LMU via aacomas 1/6/09. All of my other primaries were submitted and complete by 10/10/08 however, I guess out of pure unknowning how great this school was I did not submit my primary until just recently. I have not had interviews yet because I am taking my MCAT for the second time 1/31. My stats are average in regards to GPA however, my experience in my opinion is extensive; I worked in a vet clinic assisting in surgery, giving i.v meds, rads etc. I have been an EMT for 2 years now working in both ems and in the ER. Any opinions appreciated greatly...so stressed only 14~ days until Mcat (I dont think its possible to study anymore hours in the day when youre also taking 19 cr. hrs).

Yeah...weather.com said "snow showers," which I guess is better than "blizzard."

Does LMU-DCOM cancel class if a little snow falls? Here in Georgia, one snowflake will shut down the schools, county offices, banks, you name it. It is possibly the worst overreaction to a weather event in the South.

I must say, this is the first time I've seen snow more than once a year (from cali as well). We haven't had any classes cancel yet due to snow. Now that I look back and I see the other people in my position, I wish you all the best of luck and hope you all get in as well and join me next year.

When I applied to LMU back in August and got my interview notice in late October, I thought of it as a great opportunity to interview with a standard DO school. But when I went there, honestly, I was BLOWN away by that school and their program. I never felt that way about another DO school. The facilities LMU has, the whole school campus feeling, the housing, students, and everything else really made the school go from any other school to my #1 choice. Oh yeah and I'm sending in my housing deposit right now for a single studio. Is it too late to send it in? They're not sold out yet are they?

I really liked the housing...nice and cozy, gym is right downstairs (A HUGE REASON WHY I LOVE THE HOUSING...CONVENIENCE IS RIDICULOUS), study room, everything.

I receive my acceptance call last month. I interview on DEC 9th (does anyone remember me? I am from Georgia).

Does anyone know when we should start buying books or any supply? I would love to start some reading now

For current students: What books do you recommend to get a head start for MS1? Anatomy I figured would be a must, but anything else to help better prepare?

Also, on a side note, does everyone have a laptop? I thought I heard/read something about tablet laptops...?

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to study ahead or get a head start, because:
A) you might study the wrong thing and resent yourself for it later on
B) even if you get "acquainted" with the material, you can't fully appreciate the speed with which it moves until you're in school

That being said, if you feel like you absolutely must do something to prepare, pick up a copy of First Aid for the USMLE. It'll be a big help later on and can give you a general idea of what's going on coming in. As for now (speaking if I could do this period over again) enjoy your free time. Spend time with family and friends, take an afternoon or two off work and do something for yourself because free time will come at a premium in 8 months.

To your side note, yes they provide a laptop (ours is a lenovo thinkpad x61 tablet). I'm not sure whether your class will get the same model.

Yes, DO NOT study before you get to class.. it would be a waste of time.. just enjoy all the free time you have, enjoy the bliss of not studying... you don't want to burn yourself out before you even get to school! And yes, we have laptops, I'm not sure if y'all are going to have the same ones we have this year (we have different ones from the 2nd years.. but I like ours so much better, way smaller and lighter)

Any opinions appreciated greatly...so stressed only 14~ days until Mcat (I dont think its possible to study anymore hours in the day when youre also taking 19 cr. hrs).

bsteven2- for what it's worth my primary wasn't in until February 2 of last year. I got a call for an interview March 16, interviewed April 4, was accepted June 16. What's the worst they say... No? Vs. not knowing, I'd definitely apply. I bet my stats were a little below yours. True, stats will get better this year, but you've got to apply. If not you lost out on 50 bucks. If you think your stuff is good with your extracurricular, the only way they will really hear about that is if you apply and get an interview, then you can brag on yourself some and show how that will help you. If you don't try you'll never know. I hope that encourages you. If you don't apply, I'd say that's the final nail in the coffin. Apply and come to DCOm. It's great!

Yes, there shall be no studying prior to medical school. It's just stupid and a waste of time. You don't know what to study and will spend your summer days behind a book rather than on a golf course, picnic, family vacation, etc. Use the rest of your time wisely and RELAX!!!! Besides, studying anatomy in a book is nothing compared to seeing it on a cadaver.

And yes, you will get a tablet laptop, so no need to get one. We 2nd years have a Gateway and the 1st years have a Lenovo. Yes, ours is heavier, but the screen is bigger and I don't hold my computer often, so weight doesn't really matter to me. I would imagine the next class will have the Lenovo, I definitely know it will not be the Gateway.

Congrats to all the new acceptees!!!

Thanks Alabamacub5, I have applied and my primary has been received (1/12/09). I have called 3 times trying to get a hold of Robin in admissions and it seems we keep missing each other's call, so as I can get my secondary in the mail asap. I would be absolutely speechless if I were to get accepted let alone an interview (obviously). Crossing my fingers

it looks like someone may have answered this, but i'd also recommend commercial bank. since they have the LMU account, your financial aid clears the same day (which is helpful when you start running low!). also, the CLOSEST bank of america is in lake city, tn. i know this b/c that's where i drive if i HAVE to use a BoA....yesterday, in fact. it's 37 miles from harrogate, so not too bad... much better than drivig all the way to knoxville.

the other option would be to keep your BoA account(s), and just have someone (that you trust) deposit your check. there are several people in our class that live in knoxville, as well as several people in the class ahead of us... who will be gone when you get here, but you get the idea.

hope that helps! can't wait to meet you all!:D

Thanks for the info (thanks everyone else who I neglected to thank before as well)! I think I'll probably keep the BoA acct and open a Commerce one as well. It sounds like the best option.

To try to milk some more helpful info out of everyone on here, does anyone have cell phone service with a particular company that is good there. I currently have Alltel and they don't get coverage in Harrogate so we'd be roaming the whole time (Verizon is same deal I would assume since they are the same company now). Anyone with experience of cell phone service in the area, please let me know what I should switch to for good coverage.

Thanks!

We have AT&T and it's just "ok" but seems to be improving. Wishful thinking? I really don't think anyone has great cell service in this area. But it can only get better as more people move in. We live on text messages, as they seem to get through with little trouble but holding a connection long enough to have a conversation can be a bit trying,

We switched from Nextel to AT&T when we moved here from Michigan because we heard it was the best coverage, but turned out we didn't get service at our house so we had to switch yet again to Verizon. I get good service everywhere, as far as I've noticed. They apparently put a Verizon tower up in Middlesboro last year.

I don't have children, nor do I spend a ton of time in the cities around school, but I wouldn't expect that you would have that problem. Yes, the area is fairly rural, but I think people have kind of moved on from that.

If you really wanted to be sure, you could live around the Knoxville area (like on the Northeast side (Powell/Halls/Clinton). At least those schools are part of a larger system with more diversity. That means that you'd be driving a good 45 minutes every day, which could be more than you want

If I were you I wouldn't worry about it.

Quite honestly I would not switch until you get here and know where you are going to live. I had heard verizon was the best with so I went ahead and ordered verizon phones. They had no service at my house which is ten minutes away from the school. I had to return them and order ATT. It was kind of a hassle. Your best bet would be to find where you are live first and maybe have a couple of SDN "friends" over to see which company works at your house. Haha I don't know how else you could test it without buying the phones first.

I have ATT and it works great everywhere I have been except down in the Gap and in VA. I don't really go to either of those places very often so it fits my needs perfectly.

Just to clarify...this is LMU-DCOM, not UNECOM, but no I never took that class from UNECOM. I did find Biochemistry very helpful for first year however. I would have to recommend not studying anything prior to starting. First, you won't know what points the school will want to stress so you may end up studying the wrong stuff. Secondly, the vast majority of your medical school life will be devoted to studying so relax before you get here. I can almost guarantee it will not help you much, if at all, and you'll be more inclined to burn out quickly. Hang out by the beach, spend time with your SO, work and save some money, but don't study.

I definitely didn't.... basically all the preparation that would have been helpful to you should have been done in undergrad. Anything short of taking a complete course really isn't going to help you at this point. I opened one of my books a couple of weeks before school started and realized right away that I didn't know what was going to be important and what wasn't. The few things that I did read about hadn't even stuck with me by the time we got to that unit in school, so seriously... take a break  It's the last good one you'll get for a while!

I plan on getting the Netter's Anatomy application for the iTouch/Phone and playing with that a couple of weeks before classes start (that is...if accepted... *fingers crossed* ). No serious studying, just a little preparation. I plan on just reading/skimming books like 'The DOs: Osteopathic Medicine in America' by Norman Gevitz, and 'Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine' by Robert Ward. The last mentioned is quite big, so I just read the chapters that interest me the most, like behavioral sciences.
Other than that I plan on reading as many novels as possible, like the ones I always wanted to read but never had the time to. Now I do :).

The Gevitz one is pretty good. I found it very useful for a light overview of the history of osteopathic medicine in America. I don't know about the other one. As far as the Anatomy application, I was thinking of doing the same thing (although for a different phone). I just like to play with those kinds of things. When school rolled around I probably wouldn't even use it though. Good luck on the admissions process.
