If any of you first and second years have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for a house 15-30 mins outside Harrogate toward Knoxville so that my wife can commute. If any of you know of landlords in the area, realty companies that manage rental properties, or just any information of a place that I could start my search, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Feel free to post here or just send me a PM. Hex311 02-06-2009, 04:07 PM I was wondering if anyone could help me? I have shadowed 3 DO's, played 4 yrs of lacrosse, volunteer lacrosse coach, worked in a lab for 8months...Im just fearing that its not enough :-( It's difficult to assess the validity of someone's experiences, but as a general rule shadowing three DOs can be good if it was for more than a day or two. One day a week for a year is nice. Three days a week for six months is good too. One day each is no good. Lacrosse volunteering doesn't really count (albeit more fun). Here's what you need to do to assess yourself. Imagine you're the admissions committee and you have 3,500 applications for ~160 spots. You want to pick people who are academically capable, pleasant to work with, want to be a doctor, and KNOW what it's going to be like to be a doctor (as best they can). The only way you can have any understanding of what the medical profession is like will be through meaningful time spent working/volunteering in the medical profession along side physicians. When you feel as though your application shows enough relevant exposure that an admissions committee would feel comfortable that you know what you're getting into you've done enough. CoachPutMeIn 02-08-2009, 01:12 PM Hey can anyone that goes to LMU tell me how schedule is like your first year? Like Monday-Friday what is the daily schedule like? ie 8 am to 4 pm? On top of that, is there a student run website / blog where there are a ton of LMU pictures and dorm pictures? Thanks! missdochopeful 02-08-2009, 01:42 PM Hey can anyone that goes to LMU tell me how schedule is like your first year? Like Monday-Friday what is the daily schedule like? ie 8 am to 4 pm? All of the class schedules are available on the school website. Here's ours this semester: http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/oms1_spring_schedule_09.pdf CoachPutMeIn 02-08-2009, 01:46 PM So pretty much everyday its like 8-4 then? Yeah I've seen that schedule lol but sometimes that thing looks confusing. missdochopeful 02-08-2009, 02:08 PM So pretty much everyday its like 8-4 then? Yeah I've seen that schedule lol but sometimes that thing looks confusing. We have lectures starting at 8:30AM everyday for 3 hours. Then we break for lunch. Depending on what courses you're in, you'll have lab a couple of days a week (more when you're in anatomy) and those are in the afternoon. The class is split into A and B group, so if you see those on the schedule, you only have to be present during your block of time. It varies from week to week, but on lab days, you either get a long lunch (11:30AM - 2:30PM) or you get out of class early that day (2:30PM). Does that help? cassrae 02-08-2009, 03:03 PM So pretty much everyday its like 8-4 then? Yeah I've seen that schedule lol but sometimes that thing looks confusing. During first semester you are guaranteed to be in class 8:30-11:30 Mon-Fri. We had anatomy lab or OPP lab Mon, Wed, and Thurs, which would be from 12:30-2:30 or 2:30-4:30 depending on whether you were an A or B (we switched each week so that the same group didn't always have first lab) Tuesdays we had EPC in the afternoon (essentials of patient care), which normally resulted in a lecture from 12:30-1:30 and then lab time to learn how to do the exams (cardio exam, lung exam, abdominal exam, etc) It seems like we had a lot of friday afternooons off, and if we didn't, we would occasionally have lectures, or have case studies for one of the classes. Now this semester, we don't have anatomy lab twice a week, so we have a lot less non-class time. We have OPP on wednesday afternoons still, and EPC on tuesday afternoons, but Mon, Thurs, and Fri afternoons now have classes. So far, we have usually been having 2 lectures after lunch, so here from 12:30-2:30 on Mon, Thurs, and Fri. (still have lectures every morning from 8:30-11:30) But I think as the semester goes on and we get into the systems, our schedules are going to get a bit more full. Hope that helps some! I know the schedule online is kind of confusing! CoachPutMeIn 02-09-2009, 05:51 PM Thanks for the clarification. Can't wait till I start in August/late July! What should I expect? missdochopeful 02-12-2009, 12:00 PM Congratulations to all who have been accepted!!! :hardy: You will love LMU-DCOM  I just wanted to express to all those starting the rental housing search that if you find a house you like, ask the landlord for a list of references of current/past renters that you can contact. While the majority of landlords in the area are cooperative, friendly people who have been renting properties for years and are excited that you are pursuing your medical education here, some have jumped on the rental house bandwagon to make a quick buck with the recent influx of students and are less than interested in the reason you came here (and the importance of a peaceful living & studying environment.) Also, be sure to look over your contract (if your landlord is offering one) thoroughly before signing. The last thing you want to be dealing with mid-semester is finding a new place to live because your landlord won't fix the air conditioning, water, driveway, is planning to sell the house (or starts construction on the property ), etc. Just a word to the wise, since it has happened enough to students that I found it worth mentioning! You may want to begin your search with houses for rent by current students. There are some OMS-II students who purchased houses here and will be renting them out when they leave for rotations. Just be able to answer the forementioned questions in a clear and concise manner, and possibly elaborate with some personal experience or knowledge and you will be fine. Good Luck. missdochopeful 02-12-2009, 05:35 PM Hi you guys I just wanna ask if anyone know the booklist for the first semester of M1. Since I already graduated in Dec and have been taking vacation for more than 2 months. Have enough fun and now it's time to hit the books just for fun also. I would appreciate it. Thanks Steven D.:D Hey Steven, They probably won't post your booklist for a while, but they will likely be close to the same books, if not exactly the same, that were on our list... which I now see has been replaced with our Spring booklist, so the link won't be any help to you! Let's see... you'd be safe getting Gray's Anatomy for Students , Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking (9th ed.), and Gray's Dissection Guide for Human Anatomy (2nd ed.). Other than that, I used Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach (3rd ed.), BRS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (4th ed.) and also Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy (4th ed.) *but* I would wait on Netter's because you get a free one for joining SOMA (which basically everyone joins) so don't waste money on a combo pack like I did and end up with 2 copies! That should get you started until they release a book list for your class. And keep in mind that if there is a different text that covers the same material, you can get that instead. The only thing that I found I needed the exact edition for to follow along was the Dissector. To be honest, I didn't find there was much time for reading, but it all depends on your learning style. For me, if it comes down to crunch time, I get more out of re-watching lectures than reading a chapter, but it's different for everyone. Hope this helps  CK7218 02-12-2009, 06:10 PM Damn, just firing off those questions. kidding...the interview is very relaxed. There are more people at the interview day with you, but you interview with the two interviewers by yourself. Definitely go to the pizza place if you have the chance, makes the next day much more relaxing. If you have average statistics it is not too late, a few posts earlier someone mentioned interviewing at this time and still getting in in June. It has been taking an average of around 10 days to get a response. Hope this helps. Good Luck at your interview. Definately go to the Oasis. We were asked numerous times if we went. I was also asked specifically during my interview. CK7218 02-12-2009, 06:14 PM Hello all LMU-DCOM. I interviewed on Feb 10th. I had a great experience. The faculty I met seemed to be very friendly and helpful. Is this true for the most part?? Friendly and helpful faculty? This is true for the entire part! Do you find it hard to find time to study the cadavers since there are only 8? As for anatomy lab, there are only 8 cadavers but this isn't a problem for learning. You're in a lab group of 5, and within that group you have 2 hours per week with your body. In lab, it can get a little crowded when you're on head and neck, but this is because the structures are so much smaller- from the neck down there's no problem with being able to see everything necessary. However, I learned the most on my own outside of lab time, and for that purpose the lab is open from when Dr. Cross arrives in the morning until about midnight each night (longer hours approaching practicals) Granted, the lab can get busier as you approach an exam, so plan accordingly. Long story short, 8 bodies means there are fewer structures to be tagged during practicals (although there are a couple "reserve bodies" we don't see until then). To make up the difference they integrate imaging and models ultraprevention 02-12-2009, 09:16 PM Friendly and helpful faculty? This is true for the entire part! Is it a medication you are just taking temporarily? It sounds like he's assuming it is and, therefore, since you currently have a prescription for the drug, it won't be a problem at this point. However, if it's not a temporary situation, you should definitely call back and explain that because if it's medication that can alter your state of awareness, they will not let you go on rotations and potentially endanger your patients. Styria 02-27-2009, 08:58 AM I would wait to hear from one of the second year students about rotations. As a first year, I know nothing but rumors, and those stink. I know this isn't for sure (so I guess this is technically a rumor, but it is fairly solid info...) I'm pretty sure that UTMC - Knoxville made an offer to our school for us to be able to do CORE rotations there, but the offer had to be refused because it was unfair to our students (it cost way more per student than should normally be charged, they would require our students to take the USMLE boards as well as the COMLEX (which you are required to take as an osteopathic student, etc.) UTMC - Knoxville is also looking down the road when the med school in Memphis is going to have to enlarge their classes, so they can't take a whole bunch of students from DCOM now just to say no later. It's kind of a catch 22 for them. HOWEVER... as a third and fourth year student, you can do as many elective and selective roations as you want there, and those are good times to get to know some of the program directors and residents if you wanted to do a residency there. Plus, they might change their minds... you never know. As to core rotation sites, Knoxville is hospital-saturated. There are 4-5 hospitals for sure that are great hospitals, places I would go to if I needed something done (in fact, I get to test that out here after 1st semester when I have my ACL reconstructed). The doctors are great at each of them, and they will be great teachers. I'm not sure about Erlanger in Chattanooga. I know they have a relationship with UT - Memphis, but I'm pretty sure they have signed onto our students coming for both CORE and selectives, electives. Don't worry about the third and fourth year rotations. Our Associate Clinical Dean, Dr. Lenz, is doing a great job and will make sure everybody has a great place to go. Focus on getting in for now... that's the hardest part. Also what is my chance of getting off the wait-list considering that I'm out of state? ultraprevention 02-28-2009, 07:16 PM Is anyone interviewing on March 10? Do any of the current students know if the lectures are enabled as podcasts, so students can re-listen to them on their ipod, or other mp3 device? I know mediasite has the capability, just wondering if it is used at LMU-DCOM. Thanks rockchalkjdoc 03-01-2009, 05:12 PM In our most recent dean's hour, it was explained that podcasting has been approved. However, at this point it's a matter of implementation. futuredoc20 03-01-2009, 08:51 PM so i am interviewing march...anyone else? also, any general advice? does interview invite mean strong consideration? ScotFoo 03-01-2009, 10:31 PM In our most recent dean's hour, it was explained that podcasting has been approved. However, at this point it's a matter of implementation. Thanks for the information. Styria 03-02-2009, 11:35 AM so i am interviewing march...anyone else? also, any general advice? does interview invite mean strong consideration? The students at the pizza party the night before mine said that if you're invited to interview at DCOM, it's because they want you. Though you're still up against the class size and the timing in the cycle. It's very worth going to. Just relax and be yourself. Although every school is said to be friendly and 'they just want to get to know you' in the interviews, I have never seen the level of kindness and encouragement that I was shown at DCOM. That includes the interviewers themselves. I'm a quiet person and still overcoming some shyness. They told me they'd rather go to a quiet, shy doctor who cares for his patients any day than an arrogant, overconfident a-hole. Check the DCOM admissions welcome page. Everything they say they're looking for on that is pertinent. Be prepared to answer any questions about weaknesses, and to be specific if they ask for it, but don't obsess about it: growing and learning in life means you already answered the question for yourself in the past and you're just telling them what you know. This will take care of all sorts of questions (what will you do differently next time/what will you do if you don't understand material or are in trouble/have you seen something unethical and what did you do about it, etc.) and let you move on to being friendly and interesting and showing your humanity. GraceEuphoria 03-02-2009, 09:44 PM Gah, all this news of waitlisting has me nervous about the outcome of my interview already. It makes me wonder how many are actually going to be pulled from it in the long run and how late they wait to notify you... JasonI 03-03-2009, 05:13 AM hi guys, I just wonder if it's possible to bike from school apartment to school everyday since I am trying to save some gas $:D Thanks There is a paved hiking/biking trail that goes from the student apartments to campus through an OLD train tunnel. It's well lit and fairly flat. Well, flat for around here. Edit: Just a piece of news I heard this week, if you have seen the recent construction on LMU campus, it's a new cell phone tower going in. nysheth 03-04-2009, 10:21 AM I recently interviewed at DCOM and really liked it. Its so strange seeing such state of the art facilities in the middle of a rural area. My secondary was in on either Feb 11 or 12. I got called on the 16th for an interview on Mar 2nd. Hope that helps give you an idea of the time frame you might be working with. GraceEuphoria 03-04-2009, 08:28 PM Just thought of this though- responses might slowed a little here lately. Dean Stowers has been out of town some and the school has several things going on right now, including an AOA conference and trip to DC for DO on the Hill Day, or something like that. They told us March 2nd interviewees to give it at least 2 weeks before calling and that we should have responses in 2-4 weeks. She said she anticipated award letters being sent in April. Hope this helps... I am wait-listed too and I interviewed on the 17th....I'm just wondering if anyone interviewed on that date got in....it seems so many people are wait-listed on that date of interview. But I just emailed Janette a letter of interest (which includes an attachment of the letter) and she said that was fine and that she's going to put it in my profile so you can always do that and send in a hard copy if you want. This is my first interview so I'm both nervous and excited:) How exciting. You'll definitely enjoy the interview experience. LMU is probably one of the most accommodating and hospitable schools I've interviewed so far and it's pretty out there. It's pretty laid back but don't slack off and still maintain professionalism during the interview process. Have fun definitely and make sure you talk to Bob, he's the nicest and informative tour guide ever. He'll make your nervousness go away. Did any of you that have also been put on the wait list receive any type of confirmation from the school when you emailed within the 14 days your interest in remaining on the list? I hope that makes sense... Anyway, I sent a message within a few days of receiving the letter my interest in remaining on the wait list. I realized last night that I never heard back from the school (I'm such an IDIOT for not checking up on it...I've never had a problem like this before though)....so I get to checking my email and I check my Sent folder....and there is no such email there. So now I'm freaking out that they didn't get the email. And now it is past the 14 day requirement! I just sent another email explaining the situation, but I'm just really afraid that it won't matter. I plan on sending an update of what I've been doing this semester, since I am out of school. What advice does anyone have on what to say? And how should I go about sending it (ie email, mail typed letter,...)? I would write what is generally referred to as a letter of intent. Basically, address it to the Director of Admissions, cc: to your interviewers, that states your intent. FOR ME, this was the only school that I interviewed at, so I told them that. If accepted I would come without a doubt, so I told them that. Basically it is something else that you can send them to express your interest in the school so when they pull out your file again, they'll see that you haven't given up. Obviously, don't write that stuff if it's not true, but you get the picture. Keep it up... don't get discouraged. It's out of your hands now! Alabamacub5 03-09-2009, 07:14 AM Is ANYONE getting accepted that has interviewed recently?? From what I understood while I was there, the class was not even close to full, so what's the story? Is it just a matter of having to wait on students who have been accepted to respond with a yes or no so they know how many seats they are working with? Also, sorry if it's been covered, but does anyone know how their waitlist works- is it ranked or done by order of interview? And will they tell you what spot you hold on the list if you do end up on it? People are getting accepted but then again, people are getting on the wait-list too. Wait-list is not bad, ya'll... think of it (because it really is) a sign of "not yet. I'll say this again for those who didn't read a previous post. I submitted my primary February 2 of last year. I got a call inviting me for an interview March 16. I interviewed April 4, got a wait-list letter May 5, and then practically nothing until June. June 16th was kind of the date when AACOMAS schools start moving a lot from their wait-list - so i got a call then. All that to say, keep your head up. In a sense, it is a matter of how many acceptances are "accepted" by the student, but at this stage, they don't give out a ton of acceptances unless they are just certain they want that individual. I bet that 1/3 our class was on the wait-list at some point of the year, even if it was earlier in the cycle. The wait-list, as I understand it, is ranked in tiers (at the least), but also by numbers within those tiers. The tiers are determined by "top choice", not by interview date, so even if you're like me and got a late start on things, if they like you well enough and interviewed the last day possible, you can still get in... (although rmeember, it is always better to apply/interview early. The admissions offices can't tell you where you are on the list, unfortunately Alabamacub5 03-09-2009, 07:16 AM Things just keep getting worse. I also plan on sending in 1 or 2 additional LoR's regarding my work for the past 2 semesters, so hopefully that will help too. I would write a letter to your interviewers and mail it. Tell them about what you've been doing since your interview, like working, more shadowing, etc. Clearly state your interest in LMU and that it is your top choice among the other schools you've applied to. Hopefully there will be enough movement on the waitlist for you to get in! BTW, we interviewed on the same day. I hope you get good news at some point in this cycle. Although I won't be attending LMU, I was very impressed by it and I think it has great potential. Bioman: Congrats on your acceptances, I'm glad things worked out for you. Falling Gator 03-10-2009, 10:23 AM Regarding my leter of intent, should I mention that I've applied to some post baccalaureate programs (Plan B lol)? CoachPutMeIn 03-10-2009, 11:55 AM Idk about mentioning the Plan B thing, I'm not sure, maybe someone else can give better input. gobluegirl 03-10-2009, 04:27 PM I wouldn't recommend mentioning anything about plan b in your letter of intent. Instead, focus on explaining how you stand out from the other people on the waitlist. Explain why you deserve to be accepted. Think about how the school would benefit from you, and vice versa. Also, write about your accomplishments and activities since the interview, and update them on your GPA (if it's changed). Good luck to those of you waiting to hear from LMU-DCOM :D hoss22 03-10-2009, 05:35 PM you got it... plus, I haven't figured out how to reply to multiple people in one post... plus Iwant to be like you and have more posts so people will take me seriously:laugh: My post count means I am your superior MD ;). It's very important while you sit there for however long twiddling your thumbs waiting to get called right?? Well congrats on the acceptances- you just call them in with that decline though and tell them I will happily take that spot :D brenster99 03-11-2009, 09:24 PM And by the way for anyone who is looking for time frames... I interviewed 2/23 and the admissions committee didn't meet 2/26 like normal they met 3/4 a week late and I got accepted today. JasonI 03-12-2009, 05:19 AM Congrats to everyone getting in and hang in there to everyone still waiting. Looking forward to seeing all the new faces this summer/fall. peachate 03-12-2009, 09:38 AM What did you like about AZCOM vs LMU-DCOM I just got accepted to LMU and i have an int at AZCOM on the 27th or so... I really liked LMU but i gotta give AZ a fair shake. I think both schools are pretty even. For me it came down to the fact that I prefer being closer to a city. What if I really need to have Vietnamese food one night? I don't think there are any Vietnamese restaurants in Harrogate. LMU is an amazing school and if it were somewhere bigger, it would be my top choice due to the faculty, labs, creepy talking patient dummies, group testing stuff, etc... Definitely check out AZCOM though. It has a great campus, great faculty, and the interview was actually fun. Like a lot of people say on this SDN thing, med school is what you make of it. I don't think there are any bad schools out there, it just comes down to where you think you fit in. nysheth 03-12-2009, 12:55 PM Peachgate, I know exactly who you are too! Just some info: I asked Dr. Stowers if there were any seats open when he called me and he said they keep seats open for good candidates that apply close to the deadline. Also, Vols I think you were sitting beside me in the conference room and I was the UT fan. I wish you all the best luck, I'm sure he doesn't call all people on the acceptance list. Makati2008 03-12-2009, 05:31 PM I will be attending your school next fall and I was wondering if you could tell me just a small description about the typical first semester of medical school there. Also how is the studying going along for the COMLEX with the second years? Does DCOM prep us for the Boards? Thanks so much in advance guys! eric. nascardoc 03-12-2009, 05:47 PM I will be attending your school next fall and I was wondering if you could tell me just a small description about the typical first semester of medical school there. Also how is the studying going along for the COMLEX with the second years? Does DCOM prep us for the Boards? Thanks so much in advance guys! eric. First off....congrats on your acceptance!!! Check out this link (http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/oms1_fall_schedule_08.pdf) as it shows you the schedule for the first semester. The schedule starts when the last schedule update occured, so you just need to move a couple pages....just use the arrows in acrobat reader. That is the best way to understand the schedule. But in a nutshell....you will be busy. As for boards, they do teach board material very well. We have a couple profs who do Kaplan COMLEX review, so the experience is there. Also, DCOM provides the 2nd year students Kaplan review materials/classes at no cost. We have access to qbanks, lectures, practice exams, etc. So your boards will be more than covered. But remember, board study begins with your classes ;). 123880 03-12-2009, 06:17 PM Peachgate, I know exactly who you are too! As sad as I am over it, it just means I'll have to send more papers telling them all about how LMU and me would go so well together. :) nascardoc 03-12-2009, 07:40 PM First off, congrats to everyone on their acceptances!!! You all will love LMU-DCOM :highfive: So I was waitlisted here at LMU in February, and after seeing other schools (also being waitlisted), I've really decided that LMU is my first choice. I plan on sending an update of what I've been doing this semester, since I am out of school. What advice does anyone have on what to say? And how should I go about sending it (ie email, mail typed letter,...)? I am using the quoted post above as a reference in which to answer all questions regarding waitlist stuff, so the advice is for anyone in that situation. Words of advice: - Keep the school updated on any activites you are involved in, albeit grades, clinical experience/shadowing, volunteering, teaching, etc. It shows the school you are still interested in them and you are continuing to improve your application. Please don't send them something everyday. Every 2 weeks or so, if you have a VALID update (not going to your doctor who's a DO and getting a check-up). If more than one, send it in a group. This late in the cycle, make yourself stand out, but don't be annoying. - Send a Letter of Inent (LOI). Basically, its a letter stating you will forego any other acceptance should LMU-DCOM take you off the waitlist and accept you. Personally, I would type it, print it out on nice paper and send it to the school, but emailing or faxing works too. - Be patient. The wait-list sucks b/c all you do is sit and wonder....its hurry and wait. But trust the process. The number of seats changes b/c you have people who have been accepted, but are still deciding on whether to go or not (and the school has to assume they will take the seat), you still have more interviews in the upcoming weeks, etc. Trust me (and the other DCOMers here on SDN), people are taken off the waitlist, and sometimes a week before school starts. Remember, keep the school updated and let know you WANT to go there. Regarding my leter of intent, should I mention that I've applied to some post baccalaureate programs (Plan B lol)? Or should I just mention the work I've done the past two semesters, as well as what I plan to do in the upcoming weeks/months? Um...don't talk about plan B...doesn't look good. Talk about the stuff you've done to show have you've improved. In the background, still apply to those programs, but there is no need to let the school know. Should this application cycle end and you aren't offered a seat, then you can send a letter stating you've applied and been accepted to a post-bach program in order to improve your application for next year. Don't be afraid to keep in touch either. The best thing ANYONE can do who is applying next year is to attend the OMAC conferences DCOM has. One is in September and the other in December. All the big wigs in admissions are there, so stop by and talk to them. Also, talk to current students and get advice from them. Things just keep getting worse. I'll be heartbroken if this is what completely knocks me out. If I were you, I would call Janette and talk to her. Finally, just some other words of wisdom, coming from a 2nd year at LMU-DCOM about med school. First and foremost, remember to take time for yourself, your family and friends...loosen up, laugh, and enjoy the little things in life. There is always time to study (and there never seems to be enough of it), so remember those around you. Hand out with classmates...shoot the breeze with faculty, get to know them, and talk more than medicine. Get involved with clubs and leadership positions. Don't be afraid to try something new or break out of your shell a bit. Look to the 2nd year students (next year's 2nd year students) for advice...they know what you'll be going thru, more than you. Advice from people who have gone thru it is invaluable. We 2nd year students are leaving the school in great hands with the current first year students, they are great people and a great class. They will do a great job at continuing, evolving, and creating the legacy we've left behind. That's one of coolest parts about going to a new school. You have a great opportunity at now only leaving your mark or footprint on a school, but your legacy. Take advantage of that. Your voice and ideas will never be heard louder, so act on them. Make the school yours. But remember, you'll also take some crap from the class above you. It comes with the territory with being the new kids on the block. Don't worry, its not malicious, its fun. Best of all, you get to do it to the class after you. If you do all of these things, I guarantee you will have some of the best years of your life in medical school. Oh....one last thing....don't be a gunner.....they are a**holes. :slap: dominate 03-12-2009, 07:56 PM The best thing ANYONE can do who is applying next year is to attend the OMAC conferences DCOM has. I went to an OMAC conference in December and since I am from alabama and came to visit the school at a time other than the interview... they could tell I was very interested...LMU-DCOM was always my number one choice and my visit cemented it, and I made sure to let them know that. I was on the lower end of the MCAT scale and I truly believe that my attending the OMAC conference helped get me an intervie.... I honestly think I would not have had the chance if I had not met faculty, admissions, and taken advice from current students. My dream came true and I was accepted. It's too late for people this cycle to attend an OMAC, but if any future applicants are lurking take my advice. Good luck to those still waiting.:xf: Styria 03-13-2009, 06:52 PM Have any of you current students taken the speed reading course that will be offered April 4th and 5th? Here's the basic gist of the day... -check-in with light breakfast snacks and drinks (Bob will bring you over on the shuttle but if you want to drive, that's fine too) -presentations on curriculum, financial aid, etc by various admistrative faculty and professors -3 30min interview sessions (you only participate in one though) -building tour with students -lunch with students -housing tour with Bob Throughout all of this, your stuff is safe and sound in the conference room that you sit in during presentations and while waiting for your interview slot, so no need to worry about that. Regardless, I wouldn't bring anything personal in with you besides the bare necessities. Other advice: don't sweat the small stuff. :) tatstyl 03-16-2009, 02:41 PM Need for some info please Those of you at LMU-DCOM 1- how are the stats of test for the first and second year students? 2- are many students taking the USMLE? Yes. GPS and Sat radio, yes. FM radio and cell phones, sometimes. Your GPS will tell you to come up Hwy33 from Knoxville. It lies. Take I75 from Knoxville up to Hwy63 and come across that way. Much easier drive. Much less chance of getting stuck behind a tractor or school bus. MJB 03-17-2009, 06:26 AM sorry I can't even understand myself what I was asking What is the percentage of students who take and pass the USMLE or COMLEX in the first and second year. I heard that in some schools, about 80 to 90 percent of students pass it at their first time. How about LMU-DCOM? The class of 2011 will be the first class to take Step 1. So, no stats on that yet. I'd put the time of airport to LMU at closer to 1.5 hours, especially if you stay off that Hwy 63. That way takes forever. (I'll just add that I hadn't seen Jason's edited comment before I posted this. That being said, I stand by what I said. The 75 to 63 route adds at least 30 minutes to your drive in my experience...and, it's boring.) GPS, pretty sure it works. Haven't needed one. missdochopeful 03-17-2009, 07:13 AM While allopathic residencies will "take" the COMLEX alone, it is not directly comparable to the USMLE, so I'm considering taking both to show that I'm an equally strong candidate as an allopathic student, should I decide to apply to an MD program (to clear any doubt from their mind). Also, at the National Spring SOMA Meeting a few weeks ago, we were asked to report allopathic residency programs who are discriminating against DO applicants (by doing things like asking for tuition), which makes me believe that it has been a problem for some students. Not that I would want to end up in a program that doesn't think I'm a worthy candidate, but doing well on the USMLE if you plan to apply to MD residencies may prevent this. That being said, if you have good grades, good COMLEX scores and have a strong application otherwise, iand you do poorly on the USMLE you are shooting yourself in the foot. I'm only going to take it if I'm confident I will do well and am fully prepared. But you have PLENTY of time to worry about that. I really think taking both USMLE and COMLEX depend on which residency you are looking at, in terms of specialty. Things like IM, FP, Peds, Ob/Gyn, etc, then I would only take COMLEX, things like Surg, EM, Ortho, Rads, etc. I would think about taking both, only b/c they are more competitive and you give yourself the best chances. I have found some programs that take only USMLE, even in cities that have osteopathic schools. Yes, any specialty has its own osteopathic residency, and as I do more research on them, the osteopathic programs are very strong. But if you want to do residency in a city that has a lot of allopathic programs, then you are best off taking both, unless its one of the specialties mentioned above. In our class, it seems as if EM is the most popular, with IM, FP, Ortho, and Surg (if I remember correctly...i know EM is right). In terms of one being easier than the other, its hard to say. People will say osteo is easier b/c there are less people competing for the spot since its only osteo students, but there are less total osteo spots, so the competition is even among all of them. I personally don't think osteo rads is easier than allo rads and I wouldn't assume that either. You definitely have to approach both with the same vigor. Now both allo and osteo will have easier or harder residency programs to get into, so you will have to do research to find those within the field you are interested. tatstyl 03-18-2009, 02:40 PM we all become doctors. some patients don't even know the difference. who cares kcopp 03-19-2009, 11:18 AM is LMU-DCOM still interviewing? forks4spoons 03-21-2009, 09:13 PM Hello my fellow LMU-DCOMers. There's nothing in it for them. missdochopeful 03-23-2009, 05:19 PM I figured that an agent could help with both purchasing and renting? Don't know which one I want to do yet. Actually, it seems strange, but the real estate agents really do seem to handle rentals down here in addition to sales (way different than where I'm from!) and they get some sort of commission out of it. You may want to friend "dcom houses" on Facebook to check out listings there to cut out the middle men. There's also some listed at SGA's new website: www.dcomdo.com (http://www.dcomdo.com) . There should be a lot more available for your class than there was for ours since the OMS-IIs are moving out. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, though, be sure to get references from your potential landlord so you can contact current renters. Find out if he or she has rented to DCOM students in the past. It's important that you end up in an environment that's conducive to studying. The last thing you want to be dealing with mid-semester is an uncooperative landlord and having to move. malisa 03-24-2009, 02:02 PM Just to say missdochopeful had some excellent advice! Just wondering... sc1085 03-24-2009, 09:12 PM I received an e-mail from Janette today saying Dean Stowers signed the letters and they would be mailing them out tomorrow. I heard he sometimes calls accepted students, but I haven't received a phone call. I hope that's not a bad thing. Anyway, good luck. Let me know if you hear something. forks4spoons 03-25-2009, 07:34 AM May I ask where you found your apartment? I'm having a really hard time finding apartments or townhouses close to the campus. I can't live in the DCOM apartments because I own a dog. Sorry, just now seeing this post. I really lucked up with my apartment. It's quaint and livable - nothing fancy. But he was the first to allow me to bring my dog, so I jumped at the opportunity. I, too, found mine on dcomdo.com. All I can say is keep watching that and the DCOM houses profile on facebook. Contact realtors. Heartland Real Estate called me yesterday to see if I'd found a place, so maybe he has some openings. And good luck. I know exactly how hard it is to find a place with a dog in tow. sc1085 03-25-2009, 12:50 PM I just got a call from the Dean and I'm IN! LMU-DCOM here I come. After you pay that, they'll send you a matriculation packet with things to sign and directions/forms for a physical, as well as a separate financial aid packet. We're in the same boat on housing. That's not the situation. There is a program that is more difficult to obtain monies from but since I cannot remember exactly which one it is, I'm not going to make any guesses. That being said, yes, you can go the military route or take out federal loans. I know those two for a fact. tatstyl 03-27-2009, 08:27 AM Does any one knows what is the maximum loan a student can take? does this includes Grad plus? cassrae 03-27-2009, 09:15 AM Does any one knows what is the maximum loan a student can take? does this includes Grad plus? The maximum loans you can take out is the cost of education, which is listed somewhere on the DCOM site. I think it's around $55,000? Don't quote me on that. This included Grad PLUS, as there is a limit to how much in federal loans you can take out (around $42,000) When you get your financial aid information, it will have the maximum amount you can take out in federal loans per year on there, and then the difference between that and the cost of education will be how much you can take out in Grad PLUS loans. JagerDO 03-27-2009, 02:09 PM Yes, I think you contact DCOM and let them know your situation. Perhaps they'll take an extra look at your file which would def be a positive thing. Also, don't be afraid to lose some money either by securing a med school spot at Touro, but then decide to go to DCOM. It's absolutely a positive thing because you let them see that DCOM is your first choice even you already got accepted in the other one. I used to intern at UTMB- Galveston, and a medical student who just finish his first year, stayed over summer and did the research as it counted for elective courses, Iguess in 3rd or 4th year. That's pretty much for a MD school since they care about research, I don't know about DO school, particularly our school. It can take anywhere between 1 week and 4 weeks to hear something depending on Doc's schedule and how your interview falls around holidays. I think it takes a little longer this time of year especially, because there are fewer spots and and need to decide carefully to whom those spots should be offered. Personally, I would advise against calling. If the adcom hasn't met yet, you don't want their last impression to you of calling and being impatient if they told you they would contact you. You'll be about an hour away from Knoxville.. which is a big-ish city. There are TONS of car dealerships in the area. Pretty much anything you could ask for, save a lambo (and you might get lucky and find one of those) , would be there somewhere in the immediate area. Shouldn't be too bad. Getting the license plate and DL should be fairly easy. You have to do a little bit of driving to get there but they don't have long lines if a line at all. Compared to getting that stuff done in a big city it takes forever because the lines are so long. You could easily buy a car in Knoxville since you can probably find every type of car there. Thanks missdochopeful 04-06-2009, 09:32 AM Dose anyone know if they have stopped interviewing? Nope, there's a group here this morning. rockchalkjdoc 04-06-2009, 10:33 AM When's the booklist gonna be available on school website? BTW, do you know if school apartment has wireless internet? Thanks In my humble opinion, these are the books I'd get (regardless of the book list) MGA- sign up with SOMA for the free Netters, then buy Lange's Roadmap for the USMLE by White and the BRS anatomy by Won Chung FMHC- Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics by Hebel and McCarter MFM I- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry, Lippencott's Illustrated reviews: Biochemistry And yes, the med school apartments have wireless internet futuredoc20 04-07-2009, 08:43 AM oh ok...that makes me feel kind of better reading thru this page that im not the only one that hasnt heard...i interviewed the 23rd, tho i dont want to ask about my admissions status or anything..i really dont want it to look bad...im nervous... TXDO 04-07-2009, 10:12 AM Hi guys, Booklist is available. There is like a ton of books. I want to ask if we need to buy all of them (except recommended ones). Moreover, can I use some older edition ones since my brother toook them couple years ago? Thanks nysheth 04-07-2009, 10:54 AM Definitely give Janette a call...it won't hurt. Also, don't be afraid to lose some money either by securing a med school spot at Touro, but then decide to go to DCOM. I lost a $1500 deposit at LECOM-E when I decided to come here and it was the best $1500 I've ever lost due to coming to DCOM instead....so don't be afraid of that money aspect either. Why did you reject LECOM-E? I have recently been accepted to LMU-DCOM but have another interview at LECOM-E in one week. I also have another interview at A.T. Still SOMA but I don't like their PBL cirriculum. Any advice on LECOM-E would really help me make my decision! gina617 04-08-2009, 10:26 AM I live in Dallas! you might as well call me a city girl! lemonslices 04-08-2009, 05:14 PM So I got an interview for April 13th! Anyone else? Also does anyone know if I will be interviewing for a spot or for the wait list? |
