sc1085 04-08-2009, 10:50 PM I'm not sure what you will be interviewing for. What I can tell you is I interviewed March 10th, and they told me they had about 30 spots remaining. I know they have done a lot more interviewing since, and I'm not sure how many positions have been filled. Hope this helps a little.
Premed Worrier 04-09-2009, 08:36 AM In my humble opinion, these are the books I'd get (regardless of the book list)
MGA- sign up with SOMA for the free Netters, then buy Lange's Roadmap for the USMLE by White and the BRS anatomy by Won Chung
FMHC- Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics by Hebel and McCarter
MFM I- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry, Lippencott's Illustrated reviews: Biochemistry
And yes, the med school apartments have wireless internet
This would be your all inclusive book list?
How many other students agree with this?
This is an attractive alternative to the school's list and would be nice to know that it can get me through just fine.

You're right. By looking at the booklist which DCOM posted yesterday, I wonder if these books are sufficient for first semester. Do we need to have all books in the list? I don't know if we have time just to read all of them. Real game is just about to start.
Any comment from upperclassmen are welcome and appreciated.
Thanks

It's really going to depend on what kind of studier you are. I found myself with little time to read books and preferred to just re-watch lectures on Mediasite, but everyone is different. I can tell you the books that I used:
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS
Course: Medical Gross Anatomy (DO SYS 701)
• Atlas of Human Anatomy, 4th Edition, F. Netter, Elsevier, ISBN: 1-4160-3385-8 Yes, used it all the time - sign up with SOMA and get a free one during orientation
• Gray's Dissection Guide for Human Anatomy, 2nd edition, D. Morton, et al, Elsevier, ISBN:0-4430-6951-4 I used this somewhat during lab sessions
• Langman's Medical Embryology, 11th ed., T. Sadler, March 2006, Lippincott Williams &
Wilkins, ISBN: 0-7817-9069-7 Still in plastic wrap
• Basic Histology, 11th edition, L.C. Junqueira, J. Carneiro, The McGraw-Hill Co., Inc.,2005, ISBN: 0-0714-4091-7 I did use this book to supplement lab and lecture, but you could probably go without
*I used the Gray's Anatomy text book quite a lot also, which I see has been taken off the booklist
Course: Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine I (DO SYS 711)
• Marks’ Basic Medical Biochemistry, 3rd edition, M. Lieberman & A. Marks, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, ISBN 0-7817-7022-X Read a few chapters in this book to help me understand some lectures
See also RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS
Course: Osteopathic Principles and Practice I and II (DO SYS 731 & 732)
• An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment, 3rd Edition, ISBN: 0-7817-4293-5 Still in plastic wrap on my bookshelf
• Atlas of Osteopathic Techniques, A.S. Nicholas, E.A. Nicholas, ISBN: 0-7817-6371-1Still in plastic wrap
See also RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOK
Course: Foundations of Modern Healthcare I (DO SYS 781)
• Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics, 6th Edition, J. R. Hebel, R. McCarter, ISBN:0-7637-3491-8 Never opened it - I got everything I needed from lecture
Course: Essentials of Patient Care I & II (DO SYS 741 & 742)
• Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 10th Edition, L. Bickley, P.Szilagyi, ISBN: 0-7817-8058-6 Yes, you 100% need this book - your exams will come from it even if it wasn't presented in lecture
REQUIRED SUPPLIES - I got the kit sold through the school and everything has worked just fine.
o Pan Optic Diagnostic Kit
o Sphygmomanometer
o Stethoscope
o Neurological Hammer, with pin and brush
o Tuning Fork (512 Hz)
o Scrubs (for Anatomy lab) - I got two pairs, embroidered with my name and school from www.allheart.com (http://www.allheart.com) . You can also get them from the orthopedic club at school who sells them as fundraiser, but I recommend getting a second pair online in addition because you might not get them right away.
RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS
• Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine, 2nd Edition, ISBN: 0-7817-3497-5 -
Course:Osteopathic Principles and Practice I & II (DO SYS 731 & 732)
• * Molecular Biology of the Cell, 5th Edition, B. Alberts, et al, ISBN: 978-0815341055 -I may have read one chapter (looks like it's available online though)
Course: Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine I (DO SYS 711)
• Thompson and Thompson Genetics in Medicine, R. Nussbaum, et al, ISBN: 978- 1416030805 - Didn't use it
Course: Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine I (DO SYS 711)
• Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Board Review Series), T. Swanson et al, ISBN: 978-0781786249 - I read a few chapters of this book
Course: Molecular Fundamentals of Medicine I (DO SYS 711)
For the second semester I only got the required books and still haven't even looked at some of them. It looks like they cut down the list quite a bit from what was on there last year. I have about 10 additional books in plastic wrap in my office, so at least it's been updated. Hope this helps. I also found the Netter's flashards, which aren't on this list, to be a valuable resource.
futuredoc20 04-10-2009, 08:56 AM hey found out yestarday i was waitlisted :-( not cool. so does anyone know how the waitlist works and if theres any hope on getting off the waitlist.
bsteven2 04-10-2009, 12:37 PM I would also be interested in any advice from the waitlisted people who have gotten off?? It appears there are many of us from these most recent interview days....
sailorgal 04-11-2009, 06:20 AM hey found out yestarday i was waitlisted :-( not cool. so does anyone know how the waitlist works and if theres any hope on getting off the waitlist.
I was recently waitlisted as well, so I understand your misery : ( I emailed Janette and she said the waitlist is not ranked but they continually review files as seats open up, beginning in mid-april (pretty much now). She said most of the movement seems to occur in May and June, but can happen up until the July 28 orientation week. As far as moving off the waitlist, we can only hope for the best...good luck!
Premed Worrier 04-12-2009, 03:48 AM For those who care I received some financial aid info. in the mail either Friday or Saturday.
cassrae 04-12-2009, 03:53 PM To add to what Missdochopeful said, I used Mark's Basic Medical Biochemistry just to go over all the questions they have at the back of each chapter- which was helpful because some questions were taken straight from the book (actually I didn't buy this one myself, I just borrowed it from a 2nd year friend). Also really helpful for me was BRS (Board Review Series) Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, which I used more than the required text, and it's good for when you have to study boards!
I used the Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics a lot, because it was shorter for me to read through the chapters and do all the practice questions than to go through the lengthy lectures (in my opinion). It's also a fairly inexpensive book, so I would get it.
I got the BRS Gross Anatomy book as well, which was most useful in going over practice questions, which I would do the night before all the exams as a final prep.
ThePiratesse 04-13-2009, 05:29 PM I do! Hey class of 2013! I'm a 2011er who's going to be in the Anatomy/OMM fellowship program that will keep me around on campus during your 1st year... Well, half of your first year anyways. I've got a place in Middlesboro. Its super cheap (350$ per mo total , 175$ per mo per person), and even has a covered parking spot. I'll only be living there for the second half of the year when I come back from my core rotations to do 6 mo of my fellowship. I will pay 200$ toward the rent while I'm gone, and then split bills and rent 50/50 with you when I come back. My previous roommate and i never payed more than $300 per person for total rent and bills, so its a pretty sweet deal. You only have to put up with my cats for 6 months. Message me if you're interested. I've got pics of the place I can send you. I'll take a guy or a girl.
... and yes, I DID just post this exact same message on the 2013 Facebook page, lol. :D
FutureDR09 04-13-2009, 08:55 PM For all the current DCOM students, where does everyone get their internet access from? I'm having difficulty finding it online. Also, what speed is required and how much does it cost a month? Thanks!

Hi, since you are an upperclassmen, I wanted to ask you where the clinical rotation sites are for LMU-DCOM students. Is there a link that has the list?
Other upperclassmen that know this info, would you please let me know. Thanks!

Hi guys,
Question for upperclassmen or anyone who can answer this: Certified BLS for Healthcare Provider is mandatory right? What if I am already certified? Do I have to retake it?
Thanks.
hahha, you made me laugh.
I was just kidding, don't take this seriously. I had hard time to find information on the web too. We are newbies, so it's nothing to feel bad.
Looking forward to meet you in the fall.
Regard.:)

If I'm not mistaken, you become ACLS certified in the fall of your second year through the EPC course
missdochopeful 04-16-2009, 09:40 AM I just wanted to amend the book list that I posted above. You should go ahead and purchase Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy. Unfortunately none of the schools will be receiving them free through SOMA this year due to lack of funds :( Of course there are many other awesome reasons you should join SOMA, but I didn't want you to miss out on getting this book because it was really helpful for me.

The AHA CPR & AED for Healthcare Providers certification lasts two years. A medical school ought to put you through it right at the beginning to cover you for the two academic years and then again at the end of your second year so that you're certified for your entire series of clinical rotations without having to take time away from them to renew. It's not just having it, but the expiration date that counts. A lapsed certification is a liability if anything were to go wrong. Plus it's required for taking ACLS, though I'm surprised that's in the fall at DCOM rather than at the end of the second year, since I think that certification lasts two years too.
Does DCOM do PALS too?
Hello upperclassmen,
I just wanna know if Netter Atlas is " must have" for Anatomy. Personally, I refer to Color Atlas of Anatomy: A Photographic Study of the Human Body (Color Atlas of Anatomy (Rohen)). It has real pictures of cadaver and so easy to locate the structure. Since Netter Atlas is in the booklist, so I am not sure if I need to get both Netter atlas and this atlas.
Any suggestion is welcome.
Thanks.

Whatever you prefer. I think an atlas is a must-have, but if you think another one is better, then get that. I only used Netters and I also got the Netter's flashcards which turned out to be a valuable study aid.

lemonslices 04-18-2009, 10:08 AM So this might seem like a weird question, but I was wondering if there were any health food stores near the school? I eat a lot of weird things since I have some food allergies and just enjoy health foods in general. It's no big deal if not I was just hoping there might be!

Very interesting question. I want to know too. Eating too much fast food makes me :scared: and

I think this might depend on what you consider health food.
I don't know if there's any organic markets up there, but there are in Knoxville.
To many in TN, I think "health food" means getting their Hardee's or McDonald's with small fries instead of "biggie size". Wait until you get a load of the lines at those two places every morning, noon, and night, and you'll know very quickly how secure your job is going to be as a healthcare provider.
If you need some help looking for places to shop, let me know, and I can look around. I know there's a Fresh Market down here in Knoxville...it's awesome. World Market as well....but I haven't seen much of what I would call "health food" there.
Kroger in Middlesboro may have an organic section. In my experience, Food City has never heard of lowfat products.

I used and have both. I didn't use Rohen nearly as much during Anatomy as I thought I might, but look forward to having it around for my surgery rotation.
While I am a "book person" and have bought the majority of the books, I would have to concur with others when it comes to many of the Histo and OPP books. The fact I bought the Histo books really kind of makes me mad, but Junquiera is AWESOME if you're like me and have to read to "get" our Histo lectures.
The Foundations of OPP book I like having as a reference....not so sure about my "An Osteopathic Approach to Dx. and Tx". I've NEVER used it.
Oh, and you're gonna need the Psych book unless something drastic happens. Just my .02.
FOUR MORE WEEKS!!!!!!
Thanks for all answers from all of you.
I am just curious about the 3rd year- rotation. How are students assigned to hospital? Can each student do all rotation courses at same place or they have to jump around? Finally how many weeks are there for Electives courses?
A newbie who is excited for med school.

We had a "lottery" to assign us to spots for 3rd/4th year.
You can do a lot of your rotations within a fairly small geographical area if you choose to.
I believe the count is 4 electives/selectives in 3rd year with more during 4th year.
For instance...my 3rd year is shaping up like this. I have core in the first block (first 6 months).
Peds (core)
OB/GYN (core)
IM for 2 months (core)
Surgery (Core)
Behavioral Health (core)
Cardiology (medical selective)
FP (core)
Ortho (surg. selective)
Vacation
(OPEN) (looking for Anes. for my surg. elective)
Gastroenterology (medical elective)

Thanks

Not exactly sure yet. We have a meeting in a couple weeks to go over most of that stuff. We'll be assigned preceptors at our hospital. I know who my electives and FP will be with, but that's about it.
No idea on grades...I suspect an eval from our preceptor will be sent to the school, and we will have some sort of test after each one, but not sure.
And yes, I'm loving my schedule thus far. I cannot wait.
futuredoc20 04-20-2009, 01:00 PM so ive been waitlisted and 2 weeks ago i gave them my letter of intent by email. so now, i am wondering, is it appropriate to call/email the school and ask them about my status and remind them how badly i want to go there (cuz i really truly am dying to go here...)
sunset02451 04-20-2009, 01:51 PM I got my loan offers for LMU in Harragot, Tn. recently. They also included a list of places to apply but are not allowed ( or chose not to) give any indication if one is better than the other. Does anyone have a grip on this loan issue so those of us who are not familiar with these loans will not get taken to the cleaners by someone.
Thanks in advance and would look forward to communicating with others who are accepted to the Class of 2013!!!

I would just go with the list they gave if you don't have any other loans. I myself will probably try to use the same lender as undergraduate for sake of ease. But, if they suggested them I would assume they have a good reputation. Just compare the rates and repayment terms to see what fits best. That is all I can say about it. Good Luck and I'll see you in the fall.
godsfshrmn 04-20-2009, 02:23 PM The main difference in lenders used to be the incentives offered. Before the economy went to dirt, they would offer different ways to make students want to choose them over another lender. They would deduct 1% of the fee if you paid back with direct debit, no origination fee, etc. According to Pat, there are not going to be very many incentive offers this year. I would go with what was previously stated and choose the same lender you had in undergrad. AFAIK outside that, it doesn't make a difference.
bsteven2 04-20-2009, 08:16 PM Futuredoc20, I too was waitlisted and have not finished my LOI but I spoke with janette today and was informed that there has been no movement from the waitlist. That was basically the extent of the information I got from her. I asked about my status and she did not respond about my specific status just the overall status of the list...Ahh sitting and waiting, no fun

I concur.
I've done both Discover and EdAmerica's applications. Neither were too painful. I have used EdAmerica for about everything thus far, and hope they can be a good provider as they are a local company.
prisonmedtech 04-21-2009, 08:33 AM Has anyone heard from the April 6th interview??????????????
Zinger09 04-21-2009, 09:03 AM For the current students, do you recommend living in Mars apt, university inn, or off campus. What are the pros and cons of each.
wait4me 04-21-2009, 09:23 AM Has anyone heard from the April 6th interview??????????????
nope....still waiting. let me know if you hear anything!
NPEMTIV 04-21-2009, 08:48 PM so ive been waitlisted and 2 weeks ago i gave them my letter of intent by email. so now, i am wondering, is it appropriate to call/email the school and ask them about my status and remind them how badly i want to go there (cuz i really truly am dying to go here...)
No. I would advise not calling right now. As stated above waitlist movement hasn't started yet so a call probably wouldn't help any more than the LOI you've already sent. Give it a few weeks and once the waitlist starts moving (closer to June) then give them a call.
JagerDO 04-21-2009, 10:33 PM How are the bookstore prices on campus? Did the current students purchase their books there or did you use amazon, etc.? Also, do you recommend buying books before moving to Harrogate or would it be okay to wait until class starts?

I did a price comparison last year (you *might* be able to find it if you search my other posts) and for every book the book store came out more expensive than Amazon, so I got all mine online, but the bookstore has its perks too. They are convenient and you can also put your books on a "tab" that is automatically taken out of your loan money, since you won't have the money in time. I got all of my books over the summer, but I guess you could wait too. I would just go ahead and get the ones mentioned previously on this thread as being useful and wait on the others. You don't want to find out a book is on backorder when you have a test quickly approaching.
malisa 04-22-2009, 06:06 AM How are the bookstore prices on campus? Did the current students purchase their books there or did you use amazon, etc.? Also, do you recommend buying books before moving to Harrogate or would it be okay to wait until class starts?
This is what I use http://www.gettextbooks.com/
You put in the ISBN and it shows you which website has the book for the lowest price including shipping. I buy some of my books used if the price is drastically less but if the price is pritty similar I just buy them new. It says me a good bit of money so I love the site. The only annoyance I guess would be that I order books from a couple different sites. This doesnt really bother me because I'd rather save some money but I could see how some people wouldn't like that.
rockchalkjdoc 04-22-2009, 06:37 AM Or if you have an iPhone you can take a picture of the cover and find out what the lowest price is. That is, if the commercials are true
FutureDR09 04-22-2009, 10:12 AM The commercials are true. I have an iphone and got that application and it is amazing! Seriously, all you have to do is take a picture and it shows you the lowest price! Incredible!

You buy them. There's no reimbursement. In essence you'll get the money back as long as you took out that out in loans, but the school won't reimburse you.

wait4me 04-23-2009, 12:52 AM how many interview groups/days does DCOM usually have each week?

I went with hardcover whenever it was available, but not many on the first semester list are sold in hardcover. I think I maybe found 3, but 2 of them aren't even on your list anymore this year.
how many interview groups/days does DCOM usually have each week?
2 groups per week, but there aren't any more interviews this year.
missdochopeful 04-23-2009, 07:04 AM has anyone that interviewed in the past 2 weeks gotten an acceptance call today or heard anything yet? Does Dr. Stowers generally call people on Wednesdays only?
I don't think so.... he'll probably make calls when he gets back. Hang in there! :xf:

I have heard some "locals" say that before...
histobob 04-23-2009, 11:56 AM Was interviewed on the 7th and got a letter today saying I am on the alternate list. Is that the same as the waitlist?

uh-oh, letters are out! anyone get a call yet?
yep, im pretty sure alternate list=waiting list.... do people also get rejected or is everyone automatically put on the waitlist??

No, not everyone is waitlisted.
Hope you get some good news! :luck:

Yes, that's the same as the waitlist. If LMU-DCOM is your top choice, definitely send a letter of intent!

Will do, thanks for the advice!

The only time I've ever noticed your accent is when you actually say Wisconsin. And then it's pretty obvious. So, I think you are pretty much an adopted Southerner by now.
TLRDO 04-24-2009, 09:48 AM Hey everyone. I got my letter of acceptance yesterday and I have send the deposit within 14 days. Does anyone know if they are at all flexible about this. Money is very very very very very very tight right now, and I am having trouble figuring out how I am gonna come up with it!! Did I mention that money was kinda tight? Ha!
I have to figure it out though. I LOVE LMU-DCOM!!
Just a random question. What is Health Science Center? for example University of Tennessee Health Science Center. If a university has a component of various health colleges, then would it be Health Science Center? Since Lincoln Memorial University has College of Nursing, College of Osteopathic Medicine and recently, College of Physician Assistant Studies, then why it cannot be Lincoln Memorial University Health Science Center?
Thank you

Congratulation on your acceptance, Yes, I believe they do extend your deposit day, call the admission office and ask about that.
See you in July.:D
lemonslices 04-24-2009, 11:54 AM congrats!! Also I was wondering when did you interview?

Since Mr. DeBusk funded the whole thing, his name probably has to be in the name, and I like the sound of DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine a whole lot better than Health Science Center, but that's just me. :)
TLRDO 04-24-2009, 01:46 PM congrats!! Also I was wondering when did you interview?
I interviewed on Apr. 7 and got the call from Dean Stowers on Apr. 20 and the letter arrived yesterday (Apr. 23). I applied pretty late!

want2beadoc1 04-25-2009, 08:53 AM Does anyone know how the exam system is like? Is it weekly exams specific to the course or is it a block exam that includes most subjects?
rockchalkjdoc 04-26-2009, 07:07 AM Does anyone know how the exam system is like? Is it weekly exams specific to the course or is it a block exam that includes most subjects?
We have block exams, so you'll have an exam every 2-3 weeks that encompasses everything covered in all your classes over that period. It sounds like a lot, but usually averages out to 35-50 lectures (which is what you'd be responsible for in 2-3 different tests if they were weekly exams). I find it works much better this way because you get a little bit of a breather after an exam before getting back to the grind instead of constantly worrying about the next test coming up.
We also take group exams in the afternoon after our individual exam in the morning (instead of lectures in the afternoon). This serves as a formative experience to reinforce the concepts you might not have nailed on your own, and it helps the faculty gauge how well written the test was.
malisa 04-27-2009, 06:58 AM Another great thing about the group exams is you get to see what all the answers are. So you can almost know how to did on your exam the day of instead of having to wait the couple of days for them to be graded.
And for the block exams Essential of Patient Care and OMM are seperate tests than the other subjects.

I'm confused. I thought they either accepted or waitlisted. They do actually send out rejections too?
NPEMTIV 04-27-2009, 09:30 PM I'm confused. I thought they either accepted or waitlisted. They do actually send out rejections too?
Rarely, but the reserve the right.
GraceEuphoria 04-29-2009, 02:50 PM Just wondering if anyone knows how DCOM notifies people when they get pulled off of the waitlist- is it by letter or do they try to call, given the late notice of it all? Thanks!
CoachPutMeIn 04-29-2009, 04:41 PM I sent a deposit for the single studio housing dorms back in January. How do we know if we got a room? I'm getting e-mails about some other apartment with 3 bedrooms now...so I'm not sure if that means "our regular apartments are full, try these."

There is nothing to worry about. Call the housing office to find out. I was in the same situation and I called them, they told me that I got a room and even let me choose the floor to stay.
Hope this helps.

Simple enough, here are 101 things you wish you knew before starting medical school.
1. If I had known what it was going to be like, I would never have done it.
2. You’ll study more than you ever have in your life.
3. Only half of your class will be in the top 50%. You have a 50% chance of being in the top half of your class. Get used to it now.
4. You don’t need to know anatomy before school starts. Or pathology. Or physiology.
5. Third year rotations will suck the life out you.
6. Several people from your class will have sex with each other. You might be one of the lucky participants.
7. You may discover early on that medicine isn’t for you.
8. You don’t have to be AOA or have impeccable board scores to match somewhere - only if you’re matching into radiology.
9. Your social life may suffer some.
10. Pelvic exams are teh suck.
11. You won’t be a medical student on the surgery service. You’ll be the retractor bitch.
12. Residents will probably ask you to retrieve some type of nourishment for them.
13. Most of your time on rotations will be wasted. Thrown away. Down the drain.
14. You’ll work with at least one attending physician who you’ll want to beat the **** out of.
15. You’ll work with at least three residents who you’ll want to beat the **** out of.
16. You’ll ask a stranger about the quality of their stools.
17. You’ll ask post-op patients if they’ve farted within the last 24 hours.
18. At some point during your stay, a stranger’s bodily fluids will most likely come into contact with your exposed skin.
19. Somebody in your class will flunk out of medical school.
20. You’ll work 14 days straight without a single day off. Probably multiple times.
21. A student in your class will have sex with an attending or resident.
22. After the first two years are over, your summer breaks will no longer exist. Enjoy them as much as you can.
23. You’ll be sleep deprived.
24. There will be times on certain rotations where you won’t be allowed to eat.
25. You will be pimped.
26. You’ll wake up one day and ask yourself is this really what you want out of life.
27. You’ll party a lot during the first two years, but then that pretty much ends at the beginning of your junior year.
28. You’ll probably change your specialty of choice at least 4 times.
29. You’ll spend a good deal of your time playing social worker.
30. You’ll learn that medical insurance reimbursement is a huge problem, particularly for primary care physicians.
31. Nurses will treat you badly, simply because you are a medical student.
32. There will be times when you’ll be ignored by your attending or resident.
33. You will develop a thick skin. If you fail to do this, you’ll cry often.
34. Public humiliation is very commonplace in medical training.
35. Surgeons are *******s. Take my word for it now.
36. OB/GYN residents are treated like ****, and that **** runs downhill. Be ready to pick it up and sleep with it.
37. It’s always the medical student’s fault.
38. Gunner is a derogatory word. It’s almost as bad as racial slurs.
39. You’ll look forward to the weekend, not so you can relax and have a good time but so you can catch up on studying for the week.
40. Your house might go uncleaned for two weeks during an intensive exam block.
41. As a medical student on rotations, you don’t matter. In fact, you get in the way and impede productivity.
42. There’s a fair chance that you will be physically struck by a nurse, resident, or attending physician. This may include slapped on the hand or kicked on the shin in order to instruct you to “move” or “get out of the way.”
43. Any really bad procedures will be done by you. The residents don’t want to do them, and you’re the low man on the totem pole. This includes rectal examinations and digital disimpactions.
44. You’ll be competing against the best of the best, the cream of the crop. This isn’t college where half of your classmates are idiots. Everybody in medical school is smart.
45. Don’t think that you own the world because you just got accepted into medical school. That kind of attitude will humble you faster than anything else.
46. If you’re in it for the money, there are much better, more efficient ways to make a living. Medicine is not one of them.
47. Anatomy sucks. All of the bone names sound the same.
48. If there is anything at all that you’d rather do in life, do not go into medicine.
49. The competition doesn’t end after getting accepted to medical school. You’ll have to compete for class rank, awards, and residency. If you want to do a fellowship, you’ll have to compete for that too.
50. You’ll never look at weekends the same again.
51. VA hospitals suck. Most of them are old, but the medical records system is good.
52. Your fourth year in medical school will be like a vacation compared to the first three years. It’s a good thing too, because you’ll need one.
53. Somebody in your class will be known as the “highlighter whore.” Most often a female, she’ll carry around a backpack full of every highlighter color known to man. She’ll actually use them, too.
54. Rumors surrounding members of your class will spread faster than they did in high school.
55. You’ll meet a lot of cool people, many new friends, and maybe your husband or wife.
56. No matter how bad your medical school experience was at times, you’ll still be able to think about the good times. Kind of like how I am doing right now.
57. Your first class get-together will be the most memorable. Cherish those times.
58. Long after medical school is over, you’ll still keep in contact with the friends you made. I do nearly every day.
59. Gunners always sit in the front row. This rule never fails. However, not everyone who sits in the front row is a gunner.
60. There will be one person in your class who’s the coolest, most laid back person you’ve ever met. This guy will sit in the back row and throw paper airplanes during class, and then blow up with 260+ Step I’s after second year. True story.
61. At the beginning of first year, everyone will talk about how cool it’s going to be to help patients. At the end of third year, everybody will talk about how cool it’s going to be to make a lot of money.
62. Students who start medical school wanting to do primary care end up in dermatology. Those students who start medical school wanting to do dermatology end up in family medicine.
63. Telling local girls at the bar that you’re a medical student doesn’t mean ****. They’ve been hearing that for years. Be more unique.
64. The money isn’t really that good in medicine. Not if you look at it in terms of hours worked.
65. Don’t wear your white coat into the gas station, or any other business that has nothing to do with you wearing a white coat. You look like an ass, and people do make fun of you.
66. Don’t round on patients that aren’t yours. If you round on another student’s patients, that will spread around your class like fire after a 10 year drought. Your team will think you’re an idiot too.
67. If you are on a rotation with other students, don’t bring in journal articles to share with the team “on the fly” without letting the other students know. This makes you look like a gunner, and nobody likes a gunner. Do it once, and you might as well bring in a new topic daily. Rest assured that your fellow students will just to show you up.
68. If you piss off your intern, he or she can make your life hell.
69. If your intern pisses you off, you can make his or her life hell.
70. Don’t try to work during medical school. Live life and enjoy the first two years.
71. Not participating in tons of ECs doesn’t hurt your chances for residency. Forget the weekend free clinic and play some Frisbee golf instead.
72. Don’t rent an apartment. If you can afford to, buy a small home instead. I saved $200 per month and had roughly $30,000 in equity by choosing to buy versus rent.
73. Your family members will ask you for medical advice, even after your first week of first year.
74. Many of your friends will go onto great jobs and fantastic lifestyles. You’ll be faced with 4 more years of debt and then at least 3 years of residency before you’ll see any real earning potential.
75. Pick a specialty based around what you like to do.
76. At least once during your 4 year stay, you’ll wonder if you should quit.
77. It’s amazing how fast time flies on your days off. It’s equally amazing at how slow the days are on a rotation you hate.
78. You’ll learn to be scared of asking for time off.
79. No matter what specialty you want to do, somebody on an unrelated rotation will hold it against you.
80. A great way to piss of attendings and residents are to tell them that you don’t plan to complete a residency.
81. Many of your rotations will require you to be the “vitals bitch.” On surgery, you’ll be the “retractor bitch.”
82. Sitting around in a group and talking about ethical issues involving patients is not fun.
83. If an attending or resident treats you badly, call them out on it. You can get away with far more than you think.
84. Going to class is generally a waste of time. Make your own schedule and enjoy the added free time.
85. Find new ways to study. The methods you used in college may or may not work. If something doesn’t work, adapt.
86. Hospitals smell bad.
87. Subjective evaluations are just that - subjective. They aren’t your end all, be all so don’t dwell on a poor evaluation. The person giving it was probably an *******, anyway.
88. Some physicians will tell you it’s better than it really is. Take what you hear (both positive and negative) with a grain of salt.
89. 90% of surgeons are *******s, and 63% of statistics are made up. The former falls in the lucky 37%.
90. The best time of your entire medical school career is between the times when you first get your acceptance letter and when you start school.
91. During the summer before medical school starts, do not attempt to study or read anything remotely related to medicine. Take this time to travel and do things for you.
92. The residents and faculty in OB/GYN will be some of the most malignant personalities you’ve ever come into contact with.
93. Vaginal deliveries are messy. So are c-sections. It’s just an all-around blood fest if you like that sort of thing.
94. Despite what the faculty tell you, you don’t need all of the fancy equipment that they suggest for you to buy. All you need is a stethoscope. The other equipment they say you “need” is standard in all clinic and hospital exam rooms. If it’s not standard, your training hospital and clinics suck.
95. If your school has a note taking service, it’s a good idea to pony up the cash for it. It saves time and gives you the option of not attending lecture.
96. Medicine is better than being a janitor, but there were times when I envied the people cleaning the hospital trash cans.
97. Avoid surgery like the plague.
98. See above and then apply it to OB/GYN as well.
99. The money is good in medicine, but it’s not all that great especially considering the amount of time that you’ll have to work.
100. One time an HIV+ patient ripped out his IV and then “slung” his blood at the staff in the room. Go, go infectious disease.
101. Read Med School Hell now, throughout medical school, and then after you’re done. Then come back and tell me how right I am.
Kelleyfu 05-02-2009, 07:32 PM Baahaahaa! That is the funniest, scariest, and best post I've seen here in a while.
Does T-Mobile work in harrogate?
1 more question: Has anyone used FA or Kaplan Medessentials to supplement courseworks during the first 2 years (prior Step1 prep)?
Thank guys
malisa 05-04-2009, 05:57 AM Does T-Mobile work in harrogate?
No... I had to switch. Where are you living in Harrogate? Because some areas ATT works better and in some places Verizon works the best. But when I came up here with Tmobile it roamed to ATT the whole time and I had to switch.

It's really funny how many of those I have already found true after my first year! Looks like it will just keep getting better:laugh:
malisa 05-04-2009, 06:30 AM What areas does Verizon work best in?
It really depends I think... I think both work at the student apartments but I've talked to different people renting houses and in some of the cases only one of them works.

I'll live in school apartment. BTW, which one did you switch to? Since my phone is family plan. It's really sucks if I change it now.
Hi guys,
Does anyone know that if summer externship rotation (Summer between M1 and M2) count for Elective Away-Rotation in the M3 or at least something? It sounds kindda silly, doesn't it? Matter of fact, a Cardiology PD at a XYZ medical school is a best friend of my dad, he allows me to do rotations in Cardio at his dept. at anytime So I wondered if I could do it early even though I know I have not toughed the ground of clinical medicine yet.
If anyone knows, please tell me.
Thank you very much.
:D

I tried switching to Verizon at first but it didnt work out my house so then I switched again to ATT. I think at the apartments both work equally well.
(Sucks I always thought Tmobile had better deals)

So definitely no T-Mobile at school apartment? where can I go to switch the phone? Don't tell me it's in Knoxville:eek:. just k/d

Well I got my phones on letstalk.com because they always have better deals than the actual ATT or verizon stores have. But there are ATT and Verizon stores around if you don't want to do it online.

Jager: Med school sticker shock?! Are you serious?? Paying on student loans until I'm 60 doesn't scare me AT ALL (*shudders*). I don't even know if I'll get a return on my investment. Just the interest alone is going to break the bank, especially the last two years.
Yippee!
cassrae 05-06-2009, 03:29 PM Is anyone else flipping out about taking out these enormous loans?
I have mini panic attacks whenever I think about it for too long.. so I try not to think about it often.. repress repress repress.
Also, we had a fun financial aid lecture to tell us how much interest we would be earning, how much that meant we would be paying back by the time we were done, etc... boy was that fun.

I'm not sure if they have Guinness at the "Loose Caboose" down in Cumberland Gap, but they do have several beers on tap, at least it's something :)

soccerchicoc 05-07-2009, 09:08 AM I emailed Janette today to find out how the waitlist is being handled this year ie ranked or whatnot. I have about 7 days before I have to make my final choice and I'm praying that someone decides to go elsewhere and I get that call. I know in the end we all will be doctors but I believe LMU is the place I should get my degree from.... As so as I hear from her I will post and let you all know.

I read it earlier and was going to come back and respond, but no need I guess haha.
I noticed that too  ;)

:D Yeah, you're right. Sorry for the edit. What I wrote earlier about beer was a bit inappropriate, therefore I thought it was better if I took it off.
Anyway, thanks for reading it.;)
Uberjaded 05-08-2009, 10:39 AM TXDO, no offense meant, but I would be less concerned about the way your purported EtOH consumption is perceived, but rather how your inability to master the mechanics of the English language (e.g., simple subject/verb agreement) is perceived.
However, if your grammatical ineptitude was a result of EtOH, then please accept my apologies. ;)

soccerchicoc 05-08-2009, 03:27 PM Good luck! By the way, after seven days, would a lease be your only obstacle to taking DCOM if it opened up?
i wish that was the obstacle but i have to be moved to where I am going to school by the 1st of June because of my military training this summer. So after the 15th ( which my next deposit for my seat is due at Touro) I need to start looking either in vegas or TN( :xf:). I would love to be able to wait till middle of June for Tn but only way that is going to happen is if Army decides I'm not training this summer ( which is possible very unlikely though).... SO fingers crossed.....
BTW thanks for everyone keeping their fingers crossed for me!!!
cbtk18 05-08-2009, 05:22 PM FWIW---heard today that Mr. Debusk put a bid on the Hospital in Middlesboro. Apparently he was trying to find a way build one for a while and this sort of made more sense.
Was told that the theory behind it was, "well he's trainin' all these damn doctors, he needs a place to work em!!"

CoachPutMeIn 05-12-2009, 01:30 PM I got my financial forms in April, I'm sending in all the stuff now. I'm not too late am I, to my knowledge there wasn't a deadline for it. I just needed to think hard with family about how much I needed, choosing a lender, etc.

Just FYI, but I enjoyed me a nice Guinness just the other evening overlooking the city of Knoxville from the bar in the Sunsphere.
It cost me 3 bucks.
Yes, you read that correctly. I about fell over.
Oh, and Downtown Grill and Brewery (again, in Knoxville) has some pretty good brews...2 dollar pints...all the time.
One more thing, there's a Brewer's Festival in Knoxville every fall in World's Fair Park. Unfortunately, I've not been able to participate yet due to me 1. not knowing about it 1st year and 2. Having a freaking test the following Monday this year.
I hope to go sometime before heading out of the area.
Too bad there's not a residency in "beerology". I'd be pretty well set I think.

brenster99 05-22-2009, 03:55 PM So I'll be starting this fall and I recently tore my Ulnar Collateral Ligament and might need Tommy John surgery this summer (sucks... there goes golf, motorcycle, fishing, anything that involves not being lazy). Will I miss out on a lot of OMM if I do this surgery this summer? I will have limited range of mobility and wont be able to lift much weight at all for about 2-3 months. I hear that it shouldn't be a (large) prob since a lot of the first OMM stuff is muscle energy and I could use my other arm. Any opinions?

Nah, you'll be fine as long as you have 1 hand...some people went through knee surgery in the middle of the year....and they had no issues

I wouldn't worry about it. The instructors will accomodate you with your injury and, honestly, I can't think of any techniques that you learn in first semester that would require lifting much weight. We didn't get very deep into balanced ligamentous until second semester. I'm sure Dr. Cross would like to hear how you tore it though! Ouch! From avascular necrosis of the femoral head?
soccerchicoc 05-27-2009, 08:43 AM I called admissions office and talked to Amy she said all paperwork was due by friday if students wanted to keep their seat and she said we should see more waitlist movement in the next couple weeks.....:xf:
Hi yall,
I am sure the school year already ended, right? How do you feel about the first 2 semesters? Anyway, as an incoming OMS-1, I am so anxious and nervous about how to survive the first year at DCOM.
Therefore, it would be great if any OMS-1ers can give some thoughts on the first year. I would like to know how hard it is when it's compared to undergrad. How did you manage time to do everything? Can you give some tips on how to study for exams? Does DCOM has old exams from previous classes for students to use as reference?
Lastly, speaking of survival at DCOM, I would like to know the attrition rate in the first year too.
Thanks guys,
See you in Fall
Styria 05-27-2009, 10:13 AM I called admissions office and talked to Amy she said all paperwork was due by friday if students wanted to keep their seat and she said we should see more waitlist movement in the next couple weeks.....:xf:
Admissions had to wait until May to start going through the paperwork, or at least transcripts, because colleges wouldn't be able to send final ones until then. I've only been told that they will E-mail me if anything is missing. I completed their checklist back in March (transcripts too), so if anything is missing and I'm not told before the deadline, I'd expect time to fix it.
The clinic is handling our health records. They went through mine when I called and verified that I'm complete. So that part is a relief. =)
Good luck! Though I want you in of your own accord and hate feeling like I'm wishing ill on someone else to say that here. ;)
cbtk18 05-27-2009, 11:25 AM Ouch! From avascular necrosis of the femoral head?
Yeah---I had a mid-shaft femur fracture when I was 14 (sledding) that was treated with an IM femoral nail---nail came out a year later with no problem. When I was 22-23, I developed some joint pain that was diagnosed as AVN. Laid off impact exersize for a few years and just dealt with the pain----but got really bad the last couple of years.
A guy doing resurfacing came and did grand round orthopedics (my dad is an ortho) and we listened to his talk and got his info. Ended up flying out to L.A. and got it done Feb 18th.
It has been a dream----so much better. Been running a little already!!

Problem solved. So relieved
Styria 05-27-2009, 06:28 PM You're right. I submitted all paperworks very early in March and I thought that everything is ok. However, today after I read someone's post, I decided to give DCOM a call to check (just double check). Turned out that I have been missing some titers and I did not hear anything from school in 2 months. What's the deal, man? What would happen if I did not call the school today? My missing paperworks are not done until next week. Hope school will give me an extra week to get it done since it's not my fault.
Part of the deal is that it's also our responsibility to make sure everything has been received by the school. Though that requires the school to provide the answer when you ask.
As for our health info, it looks like our files have changed hands a few times and the clinic got backed up. But Mary K. checked what was needed for me and does call back.

I did not say who's right or who's wrong. I am just shock and I want an extra week to get it done. Small thing can become a disaster.

Don't get your panties in a bunch over the innoculations, folks :p. The school understands that things happen - just get them done as soon as possible. I know people in my class were still completing their vaccines well into the first few months of school to finish up with titers, so just be upfront with your circumstances and they will try to accomodate you. It's just important to have it all in order before you start seeing patients. Some of the vaccine series take a few months to complete, so they need to make sure you've started the process. They aren't going to not let you start school because you're behind ;)

You're absolutely correct:D. I thought that if I don't have everything by the deadline then I'm screwed. I was panic:laugh: for nothing. I am so so... Anyway, school already explained it to me. So relieved. :)

Is there anything in particular that you want to know about? You don't need to be nervous - just stay organized and you'll be fine  I guess my biggest piece of advice would be to have an outlet outside of school, some sort of hobby you enjoy doing. I remember when I started that I was under the impression that I would have to say goodbye to everything I enjoyed doing, but it's actually very important to relax and take breaks in between studying to help you refocus when you return to the books. That's not to say you should go overboard and not spend enough time studying, but it just doesn't do you any good to study 24/7. I would also recommend simplifying your life outside of school. Make sure you have a peaceful living environment (make *sure* you get references from landlords if you are not living in the student apartments - I had to deal with a miserable situation that distracted from my studies and caused more stress than school itself), don't overcommit, and make sure your family/significant other understands what kind of commitment you are undertaking so they don't take it personally when you have to spend Friday night with your Netter book instead of him/her.
I don't necessarily think subject matter of med school has been a lot more difficult than undergrad, but it's a lot more information at a quicker pace, so that's why it's important to stay on top of it and not save all your studying for the weekend. Something else I had to accept is that it's just not possible to know everything, so you do what you can and hope there are questions on the stuff you know! You might have a lousy test grade every once in a while (the first block exam is usually very humbling ) but it's not going to break you, so don't stress over it. It takes some time to figure out your study style and once you find your groove, things are smoother from there. I think that's why in general people say the second year is easier - there's more info and tougher content than the first year, but you finally have figured out how to study and what to expect.
Let me know if you have any specific questions - I can at least give you my two cents!

missdochopeful 06-02-2009, 12:23 PM Is there a dress code at LMU for guys? So I know what clothes to buy.
It's pretty lenient. No T-shirts, sweatshirts, torn/tattered jeans, or flip-flops for most days. You will need to dress up for certain days, like OSCEs or any time you will interact with a patient, however.
NPEMTIV 06-02-2009, 01:09 PM Is there a dress code at LMU for guys? So I know what clothes to buy.
Collard shirts, jeans, nice shorts are ok. Here's the 2008 - 2009 Student Handbook. It probably won't change much next year. It should answer most questions you'll have. LMU-DCOM Student Handbook (http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/lmudcom_handbook_08_vers2.pdf)
CoachPutMeIn 06-02-2009, 04:12 PM so I'm assuming most guys probably just wear a polo and jeans? or do most wear like dress pants and a dress shirt? (idk if thats too formal)
lol That's a shame, I have a plethora of shirts.
And what counts as nice shorts? If I buy non ripped shorts at like American Eagle, is that ok? lol Sorry to ask too many questions, but I want to spend my money right. I know though for sure no flip flops, holes in jeans, t shirts, jorts (not that I ever wear the wretched jean shorts anyway), etc.

Thanks

I am doing absolutely nothing.. just chilling in WI, relaxing, reading books for fun, going on vacations, that sort of thing. This is what one of my teachers and some friends in the now 3rd year class advised me to do, as it is the "last summer of our lives" ha. But seriously they just didn't want us to get burned out, as 2nd year is going to be really busy. I know there are several people though that are doing medically related things, whether that is research or shadowing or a summer program of some sort, it's entirely up to you. We were told to read a few books this summer that will help us with cardio and respiratory next year, so I might be reading those, but that's the only school related things I will be doing :).

Fantastic question. I've been wondering the same thing.
I've contacted everyone I know to contact in admissions and get told the same thing-there's been virtually no movement on the waitlist. My plan ahead self won't let me wait until school starts to submit my 2010 app so I'm waiting on a fee waiver to come back and then plan to submit my 2010 app. I figure by that point it will be end of June, early July. If AACOMAS takes 2 weeks (being optimistic there), the school would have my app by mid-late July. At that point, the '09 class is pretty much set. Having my 2010 app in shouldn't hurt my chances, at least from my POV.

You should ask admissions about that, specifically about whether there would be a conflict if they kept two files on you. But it takes AACOMAS six weeks to process primaries this early in the cycle, so DCOM wouldn't have to start anything until a week before orientation anyway. They can see a list of who has checked the DCOM box on school designations even before you submit the primary (or at least schools could through AACOMAS' older online application), though not your other data. It probably would just demonstrate interest in the school.
At least do the time-constraining steps now. Have your school(s) send transcripts to AACOMAS; it might take a week or two for them to be mailed, but AACOMAS will start your file even before you submit the application.
Also, six weeks is plenty of time to find some things that can strengthen a secondary application. Ask admissions if there's anything you can do to improve your chances if you have to apply again.

There is one stretch of paved greenway from campus to Cumberland Gap that is fairly flat. Well, flat for around here anyway. I think it's about 1-1.5miles long.

CoachPutMeIn 06-12-2009, 12:25 AM So for other people who have been accepted....I've sent in all my loan information, health forms, transcripts, that background check thing, etc. So what now? Are we supposed to do anything else or just wait now until July 31st?
Anyone get anything new in the mail?

Well, make sure that July 28th is the date stuck in your head, since you have to be there at 8 AM for orientation or you lose your seat.

They are Lenovos. I like them, but I don't think there's a way to opt-out of buying one even if you're not particularly interested in them.
soccerchicoc 06-17-2009, 10:01 AM I haven't gotten in to LMU yet, I am on the waitlist but the school I am accepted at wants us to pick out our own computers. When I interviewed I really liked the ones you all have. Do you know the model number?

The incoming class will get the Lenovo X200 tablets. '11 got their Gateways? replaced by that model too a month ago too. The school couldn't repair their old ones anymore because Gateway went out of business.

x61t to be exact :)(the only difference being t for tablet..the x61 is a regular notebook. ;)
The incoming class got x200's or x300 tablets, which I like better
Edit: I guess its x200 (thanks Styria)
CoachPutMeIn 06-17-2009, 07:56 PM Is the Orientation on the 28th for Students only? Or do parents/family attend too? I ask because at one of my siblings it was family also. Just wanted to know so I don't have someone fly in for no reason.

Orientation is just for students, unless you have a spouse or significant other in which case I believe the Student Advocate Association has an orientation for them as well on the first day if they are interested.

123880 06-23-2009, 10:02 PM Does anyone know anything about the waitlist? Last I heard, about 3 weeks ago, they were anticipating more movement throughout this month, yet it appears no SDNers have gotten recently. And no noobies have come in, saying they've gotten in.
For those of you who went through this last year, was there a point at which the class was pretty much full?
I'm so stressed about this because my apartment lease is almost up, I can't stay month-to-month, and every complex I've talked to won't include this as a contingency for me signing a lease. On top of that, I'd prefer to give notice at my job even if I'll never have to come back there. You never know when you need a reference for something. Plus, it kinda goes against my personal work ethic to walk away from a job without notice. Gah. I'm rambling.
All that said to repeat my question, does anyone know anything about the status of the incoming class and the alternate list?

Hi guys,
Has anyone moved in the school apartment yet? I am moving in next week, can't wait to meet you guys.
rockchalkjdoc 07-01-2009, 09:33 AM The status won't change to full accreditation until the first class graduates....please correct me if I am wrong someone
My understanding is that the status changes from provisional to full accreditation right before graduation, that way the class of 2011 graduates from a "fully accredited" school.
Either way, it's just a matter of time- no other school has been as highly decorated going through the accreditation process.
Hi,
Out of curiosity, does DCOM use NBME Subject Exams in addition to the school exams?
Thanks
Knockout Mice 07-01-2009, 02:14 PM Hi,
Out of curiosity, does DCOM use NBME Subject Exams in addition to the school exams?
Thanks
As of right now, I don't think DCOM has implemented any NBME or NBOME shelf exams for clinical rotations. Perhaps a current rotating MS-3 can comment on if they are giving you guys any exams for your rotations? Then again, they may be too busy to be on SDN. :meanie: There definitely aren't any NBME subject exams for the first 2 years. But we do have a mega cumulative exam at the end of 1st year (not apart of your grade, so don't panic) to measure how you'd do on the comlex on the subjects taken first year.
TeeTime Doctor 07-03-2009, 08:54 AM hey guys I turned down my seat at DCOM yesterday. so to you waitlisters there is still a spot to be filled.

She won't stay there...she lives close by, so what she does is just drive from home..give you keys, etc..and goes back home...she is very, very friendly and accommodating :). Just shoot her an email and see what she says.
I am staying at the inn this year as well
I hope I get off the waitlist soon. I have to start moving to PA if not and sign my lease :scared: I'd REALLY rather go to LMU
ERfan 07-06-2009, 05:24 AM hi DCOMers, I'm moving to Harrogate in a few weeks to join y'all for the class of 2013! For the older students, I was wondering if DCOM had any regulations on hair color...do we have to have natural looking color or can we have blue tips or something? Just want to make sure I adhere to the professional attire regulations. Thanks! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

I would seriously get a headstart on changing your appearance. Regardless of what the school policy, most patients are going to be scared if their doctor walked in with blue hair.
And don't give me the, "Modern doctors are unique...blah blah blah"
If you want to be a professional, you're going to have to act like one.

LOL I think there are things much scarier than having blue tips. The student handbook doesn't specifically address hair issues, but it does say you should use your best judgment when dressing yourself. I wouldn't do anything too extreme, or anything you couldn't remedy quickly because Dr. Leo would have the last say on whether you look professional or not. I would definitely make sure you had "normal" hair when you start rotations though, don't want any docs that are grading you or that you are trying to impress to get a residency spot thinking you look unprofessional. :)

Like cbtk and Cass said, I don't think there's anything about it in the school handbook, but you will be seeing standardized patients in your first year and they are responsible for evaluating you on 10 points per exercise during your encounters with them. One area on which you are graded is "professional dress/appearance." I would hate for you to lose points because you picked this particular way of expressing your individuality. You will learn a lot about understanding the way your patients perceive you regardless of your competence - you just don't need to make it any harder on yourself!
Congrats on your acceptance!

No problem, chica. That's the same position I've been in. I need all the $$$ I can spare so even though LMU is still my top choice going into Round 2, and even though I wanted to be one of the first ones applying, I needed to wait until I knew more definitively that the door was pretty much closed to give all my info back to them. :o

I don't know. I hadn't thought about that. I got the call this afternoon about 5:30, while I was still at work. About 5 minutes before I texted you, kristen, and ryan. :D
I'm sure I made quite the site, leaned over my desk trying to be incognito while listening to my voicemail. I was quietly going 'OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OHMYGOD!' as I listened to Dr. Stowers. I cannot believe I missed his call. I wanted that call so badly!.
Oh my Gosh! Congratulations. Can I ask wat was ur stat and how late did u turn in ur app?

Pat Peace will probably tell you about it at orientation. You would need log-in info to do it at this point.

I don't know what you are planning on doing for housing, but I think that there are still some rooms available in the house I just moved into. It's in Middlesboro, about 10 min from campus and across from a town park. It's a nice house and everything is in good condition. Each bedroom has got it's own bathroom. There is a dog in the house, as well as my cat, but both are very sweet tempered. If you (or anyone else still looking, FYI) are interested, contact dshir61@gmail.com and discuss it with him.
GraceEuphoria 07-17-2009, 12:57 PM Congrats vols! You definitely deserve it! Guess some seats finally opened up...maybe I need to give them a call and bug them a little bit huh? :)

Good luck in NV! I couldn't survive in school there. I'd never leave the casinos!
rockchalkjdoc 07-20-2009, 12:25 PM Hi all,
If you're still looking for a place PM me- my landlords had a house open up in Middlesboro
123880 07-21-2009, 09:32 PM Yesterday was BUSY!
Gave my very short 5 day notice at work. Most people were very happy. 1 person, not so much.
Drove across the state. Became a couple grand poorer.
Looked at what seemed like a gazillion apartments. In reality, it was 7. Found several I liked, none that totally caught me but I finally settled for 1 at 6am this morning and made the call. I didn't want to be homeless!
and finally, best for last, I got my acceptance letter! In person. It's a lovely little thing. All unwrinkled and crisp. Gah. Love it!

Thanks, chica. The first part sounds like every guy's fantasy.
I'll be happy to see Toby again. 5 more days 'til I'm there. A little over a week until I see mah girls. w00h00.
CoachPutMeIn 07-22-2009, 10:31 PM I put this in the DO Class Thread too..
On the required books, I know some students said that not all were necessary. Are the OMM Books on the Required list useful? Or should I not even bother?
I know one student on here said hers were still in the wrapper. Is that the general consensus for the whole class? Or was it just a personal thing?
And as far as recommended text goes, I know students on here said the BRS stuff was good. Anything else? Is the other texts they recommend useful?
Does anyone know the COMLEX-level 1 passing rate for DCOM?
Thanks

At the recommendation of an OMS2, I did not purchase 3 books on the list: Embryology, Molecular Bio of the Cell, and Genetics in medicine.
However, on top of that, I ordered USMLE road map: general anatomy
http://www.gettextbooks.com/search/?isbn=0071445161
And Lippincott's illustrated reviews: biochem
http://www.gettextbooks.com/search/?isbn=0781769604
(http://www.gettextbooks.com/search/?isbn=0781769604)
I'd recommend anatomy flash cards, too. I haven't bought mine yet (darnit, i totally just reminded myself).
But it's entirely up to you, I guess.. what your strong points are and what you feel you need to brush up on.
Hope this helps :)

No, they have not all been scored yet.
ShredThatPow 07-24-2009, 06:40 PM Nevermind.
HopefulDoc1984 07-27-2009, 01:24 PM when do you find out class rank status.

Here are the books I would recommend (from a previous post) for your first year:
First Aid for the USMLE, 2009
Biochem: Lippincotts Illustrated Review: Biochemistry (MUCH better than the BRS biochem book IMO)
Anatomy: Road Map to Anatomy and Netters
Pathology: Rapid Review Pathology by Goljan (more of a 2nd semester book) -- there is a new one out (yay!!!!!)
Physio: BRS Physio (more of a 2nd semester book)
Pharm: Lippincotts Illustrated Review: Pharmacology OR Katzung & Trevor Review of Pharmacology (2nd semester) -- do NOT buy the behemoth POS they require
Micro: Clinical Micro Made Ridiculously Simple (2nd semester)
OMM: Review of OMT by Saverese, Atlas of OMM by Nicholas and Nicholas (required)
EPC: Bates Guide to Physical Examination (have the 2012ers tell you their horror stories :))
Stats: Guide to Epidemiology and Biostats
Your required anatomy texts are different from what we had, so I would defer to a member of the 2012 class.
DO NOT buy the embryo book...it sucks
Does anyone know the COMLEX-level 1 passing rate for DCOM?
Thanks
We are still in the process of finding out grades. There may even be a student or two who have yet to take it. I don't knowif and when stats (and what stats for that matter) will be released, but scores are wrapping up fairly quickly, so stay tuned.
when do you find out class rank status.
Shortly after 2nd year starts.
